Ludum Dare 48 April 24–27, 2021

Might as well give this a quick plug in case anyone finds it helpful

A simple unity project set up for quick and easy game-jamming. github link

What is this, and why does it exist?

Fed up with spending hours during game jam implementing things you know you’ve already done in every project before?

Getting close to the deadline and worrying about whether you should spend time polishing your mechanics, or implementing menu screens and audio options?

Want a better alternative?

I did, so I’ve put together a simple unity project to work as a base template for pretty much any game jam game you can think of (that isn’t networked multiplayer - but seriously don’t even think about it when you’ve got less than 72 hours!).

What's in it

  • 4 Pre-made unity scenes with animated transitions
    • Main Menu
    • Example Gameplay Scene (set up as a 2.5d platformer with placeholder models)
    • Gameover
    • Testing Scene (for when you need to check model import scale, particle effects, or other stand-alone things you plan to make a prefab of)
  • Options Menu
    • Three audio sliders (music, effects, ambient) hooked up to an Audio Mixer
    • Graphics settings
  • Highscore system
  • Healthbars
  • Clock/Timer (counts up or down - currently rigged to 'gameover' when time runs out but this can be easily adapted)
  • Interfaces for basic game objects
    • Interactables - shows a prompt when in range, and then responds to a user input (signs, doors, chests etc)
    • Collectables - triggers a function then removes itself from the scene (currently increments score) (coins, stars etc)
    • Hazards - triggers health loss to player but remains in scene (traps, enemies etc)
    • Simple prototyping assets for all of the above
  • In game pause menu
  • Minimap
  • Camera Shake
  • A handful of free models to use as placeholders while you prototype.

Everything has been designed to be as modular as possible, with prefabs you can drag and drop into your scenes, with minimal dependency between objects. Don't need something? Just delete it.

What can I do with it?

Make a game!

But seriously, don't just download this, do nothing to change or improve the project, and then pass it off as yours. See this as a foundation you can use to build off, or just as a handy reference for those basic features that the vast majority of games have in some form or another. Don't upload this to the asset store and try to make money off it.

If you have any suggestions, bug reports, or just want to say 'hey thanks for this, it helped me make my game' drop me a message and I'll make sure I read it and try to address your points. And if you did make a game with this, it would be so awesome to play it - that's what this project exists for after all. Let me know you made a game with this and I'll prioritise it for review.

Disclaimer

Everything is provided 'as is' and I won't be updating this during Ludum Dare/Global Game Jam (because I do those myself). Using this template requires you to understand the fundamentals of building games in unity engine, and basic c# programming knowledge. This project was designed and built in unity 2017 (long-term support) and I have not tested it with older or newer versions of the engine. Update at your own risk!

Good Luck, Have Fun

Excited for my first JAM

I decided to participate in this challenge, which is Ludum Dare and I mainly hope to learn from my mistakes and successes - perhaps more mistakes than successes. Good luck to all participants and may the most creative one win.

I'm in!

LD 47 was my first time participating, and now I'm back for more! Let's see how far my trusty combination of Unity/Blender/Photoshop/Reason will get me. I hope I can add some audio this time, if I'm not too busy fixing bugs :D

Good luck everyone!

Good Luck!

I'd like to wish everyone good luck before the jam starts. I hope the theme is a good one and that everyone is able to finish on time.

yo im in

another year, another ludum dare, right?

probably gonna get some stupid idea, like making a "game" in pure c#/wpf, and then not make enough content to justify downloading it

anyway, have fun and stay hydrated, peace 😘

Screenshot Bot

I was unhappy with all existing tools. So, I just created one. As warmup for this Ludum Dare. Or maybe it was just NIH-syndrome...

Anyway. I'm happy to share it with you: https://github.com/ZuBsPaCe/screenshot-bot

It features a live preview and video conversion support through a separate ffmpeg installation.

I hope, someone finds this thing useful!

We're In!

This is our first Ludum Dare. We are a team of 2 using unity, and we are super excited! Wishing everyone good luck and I can't wait to play your games!

LETS GOOOOOOOOO (and a question for you)

Four hours till lift off! Which theme is everyone rooting for and why?

Personally, I've got my eye on "Summoning" - It would allow for some pretty interesting character design imo.. Spooky dudes in cloaks? Ghosts? Sky is the limit.

First time in

Good luck everyone!

In it for 48

Going to give it a try again. Glad to be a part of the historic 48th!

Dual baguette team in!

Because making game is like the cuisine. What could go wrong? 👩🏻‍🍳

French-Eating-Habits-pic0.jpg

Team of 2 french developers, we are so excited to make the jam!

For this time, we choose to approach the gamejam with a chill mood:

✔️Unity (easy peasy lemon squeezy)

✔️Good food & many water

✔️Complete sleep cycles

❌Stress and bad cooking

Take care of yourself during this gamejame everyone, and good LD! 😉

I'm in :)

I have just finished a "LD48 Special Edition" update for LDtk, and I'm now ready to start this new anniversary jam :)

My tools:

  • Haxe + HeapsIO engine
  • GameBase 2 (https://github.com/deepnight/gameBase/tree/advancedBase)
  • LDtk level editor (https://ldtk.io)
  • Aseprite for the art
  • a few experimental tools for sfx & music :)

I'm making a game for ZX Spectrum 48

What platform is the most logical one to create a Ludum Dare 48 game for? The ZX Spectrum 48 of course! This little rubber keyboarded thing was my first computer and I have fond memories of programming games for it. Now it's time again!

I have prepared a project on Github which I hereby declare as my pre-existing code. It's not much code really. Just some initialization and the basics for rendering 16x16 sprites. But mostly build scripts to make the development smooth, I hope. I'm going to cross-develop on Linux.

Team SWI-Prolog is IN!

We're pre-par-ed for Ludum Dare! 3 programmers, 2 writers, a musician, an artist. Going to write another game in SWI-Prolog! prolog.png

I think I’m probably in.

Using my own fantasy console/engine “Freshly” along with VSCode, photoshop, Logic, maybe cfxr.

Reporting for duty

This is already my 10th consecutive Ludum Dare!

I hope to deliver at least an half baked game.

We're back in business

After skipping LD47 @sedna and I are teaming up once again for this special Ludum Dare. She will be doing the art that I'll be bringing to life with code and a little bit of fairy dust. May I'm going to stream my game development if my trusty old ThinkPad can handle all that workload efficiently.
