Ludum Dare 48 April 24–27, 2021

My 5th Dare!

Really looking forward to getting into this LD. The first game I made was, imho, pretty good. It’s been a fast spiralling free fall since then. Hoping to get my act together for this one!

Most of all I’m looking forward to seeing the amazing games everyone else creates. Good luck to all, and happy dev’ing! See you on the other side :D

Nintendo DS Homebrew for Compo

20210423_145227.jpg

As this is my first Ludum Dare event, I want to keep myself from making a game that's overly complicated or ambitious.

And oddly enough, one way of preventing myself from doing that is by making a game for a certain beloved handheld of mine, the Nintendo DS!

Thanks to DS Game Maker (basically Game Maker but for the DS) I'm able to compile a .NDS game file that can be played on PC through a Nds emulator or on an actual DS with a DS flash cart.

Since the DS has only one resolution to worry about (same for both screens) and has limited ram I'll be encouraged to keep my game simple and not overly resource intensive. Also its contraints help guide me to make certain design decisions like sprite sizes and more.

It may be a little late now for others to make Nintendo DS games for this Ludum Dare, but if you're interested in homebrew DS game development check out the DS Game Maker fansite below:

Any artists looking to team up in the jam this year?

I'm down a team member this year but would love to be able to collaborate on a game project with someone with more artistic skills than myself. I'll be working in Unity, and while I'd prefer to stick to making a 2D game this time, as you can see from my profile I'm not opposed to making something in 3D. I'm primarily a programmer and game designer with several years experience making games for both Ludum Dare and Global Game Jam events.

I'm In!

jam time hype!

Lets Do This Maybe?

Away from home in unfamiliar land. Won't have much time but I'm in!

I'm in

I'm in! This will be my 10th time. Hoping that the theme will be great and that I'll have plenty of ideas!

Warm up time

Hey everyone!

I'm trying out this blog thingy to get the old juices flowin' for this weekend's LD!

Oh yeah baby we are ready...

A Statement

Hello. I will use Unity as it is my go to standard engine for this event. I have a framework for the jam. It is here. That is all. Thank you.

I'm in!

I already said that soem days ago - but i am probably in (if i got an good idea of the theme).

ld48in.JPG

As you can see this is now the 10th time (if i made it :D). Since LD39 i am always in (and sometimes it was really hard).

The spring edition of Ludum Dare are not my best - but my winter editions gets better. Also top down games are not my super.

I just want to tell you my favorite games that i made and the worst.

Worst Ludum Dare Games

There where some but every game tells a lesson.

First Worst Game Award "Ludum Dare 42 - Escape Alienation"

This was a very special jam (it was in august 2018 and i was on vacation at the beach). However : making a game when you are on vacation is a really bad idea.

The game was low in everything: Gameplay sucks, had bugs and was too little to be a game.

Second Worst Game Award "Ludum Dare 41 - True Love Adventure"

This was the first time i had REALLY much time in the weekend. My wife was away with my kids and i had time. But the theme sucks so hard at all that i didn't had the best idea. However - i really overscoped at all. And it was my first TopDown Try.

Best Ludum Dare Games

First Best Game "Ludum Dare 45 - Claimbeer"

The theme was too open for most peoples but i thought "Starts with Nothing" is great. I made a small metroidvania like game where a drunken game tries to escape the World. I really like it until today (but i have no idea how to extend it). It was the first and only jam where i tried to "hit" the jam and then on sunday i thought "wait - i can go for compo" and i had really much fun making it.

Second Best Game "Ludum Dare 40 - Wonder Land"

When i look to the review in this game i am wondering how i got so hight scores for innovation and theme. Also when i realised that i lost some progress in the game during development and the funniest level even doesnt made it. However - the art style is not good but the idea and the charme is really great.

Last but not least "Ludum Dare 43 - Hyper Skater"

I love platforming games and i many people instantly played it when i announced it on the LD page. However the ratings where mid - but i still like the game as i made a skateboard game (which was something i wanted to do since i played "Skate or Die - Bad'n'Rad" in my childhood.

What is with the Rest?

Well the rest are games that are "ok but not special". Guntron was too short but was good in gameplay mechanic. A Guy and his princess was the try to make something funny but i realized too late : it wasn't - and i rushed to hit the compo. Risky Life was just another platformer (and it was on the weekend where "Avengers: Endgame" came out).

EnergyBoy is in some kinds special - it was my really first Ludum Dare game (and i was partically drunken when i made it lol). But this was the start to something beatiful, painful, helpless - the addiction to Ludum Dare Game Jams.

My second event

Hi guys! I will participate using:

  • Gimp 2
  • Unity 3D
  • Audacity
  • GitLab

Good event for everyone o/

=D

The hype broke my back

I've been looking forward to LD48 for the last few months and today suddenly back and neck started aching. Right before a weekend of sitting at a desk 24/7 :p

Hey, I'm in too!

And this would be my 9th Ludum Dare in a row. And it's gonna be fun! As always :) Good luck and happy jamming!

LD48 Hype!

Hecking pumped for another great Ludum Dare, looking forward to playing all of the amazing games this community makes. Best of luck and have fun!

Excited for First jam since LDJAM39!

Super excited to be back and doing another Ludum Dare after so long! Will be working with my one close friend to hopefully develop something interesting!

I'm in for LD48-LD48!

This year [2021] I've been getting more serious about my gamedev journey! But I can't wait to spit another one out in the next 48 hours! Good luck everyone! 😎

Jam it is

So, I just layed out my battle plan and it doesn't look good :-/ I'd only have 8 hours available if I wanted to do Compo... That would be insane. So I'll try to do most of the implementation during these 8 hours and than spend Monday evening finalizing the art and trying to do some sfx and music. Doing the Jam will give me additional 11 hours, providing my wife and kid will be tolerant enough to let me work the whole evening :-D

LD starts at 3 AM where I am, so I have set my alarm for 5 AM. Hopefully, I will be able to get at least 4-5 hours of sleep until then.

I'm in

I'm hoping to go uber-simple with this jam, and have already decided on a game format that should be able to fit any theme announced. Intending to really only have a few components: A single text-based selection interface, a single text area for pretty much the rest of the interface, and then the main canvas for showing any type of content (usually static images).

The Template: Oregon Trail. Not necessarily the gameplay, but the general interface and how the game is interacted with. Placing these restrictions on myself will hopefully help me control scope and get to MVP a lot sooner than I normally would in previous jams (I usually only have a matter of hours for polish and balancing, which isn't ideal).

Tools: - Unity - LMMS (if there's music) - Adobe Creative Cloud - BFXR for sound effects

New here! Have a team and also... questions.

Hello! First timer LD here!

I've made a game page in this here website, have added my teammates. When do I publish the game? After the game is done, or after the team is assembled?

Thanks!
