Ludum Dare 48 April 24–27, 2021

Count me in again!

Last participated in LD46. It didn't go to plan, but I still had fun and learned a lot!

I've decided last-minute that'll be participating in LD48. Since my weekend isn't wide open and I'm back to work on Monday, I'm aiming for the compo.

I'll focus on making something small, with a fun, polished core loop, and see where that takes me.

Not sure what I'll use this time... maybe PICO-8 again? We'll see.

Looking forward to seeing everyone's work!

We are in!

This year we will be a team of two with @kazrath, and we try to make a real fun game! We already warmed up, chatting about the possible themes and ideas this year. We agreed that no theme is bad, we can have fun with any of them! (I really hope we will thinking the same after the final theme is revealed :D )

Back again for more! Solo compo entry.

Here I am again, soloing the comp. Always a good time! However finding the energy and motivation has been a tad more difficult as of recent.

I'll be using my usual stack: - Gine - TypeScript - Aseprite - Visual Studio Code - Coffee, bananas, chicken & the occasional beer in the evenings.

Hope to see you all on the Twitch and in the compo end results!

I'm once again in :D This will be mine 7 ludum dare compo game!!!

Over the course of 3-4 years I've met a lot of different developers on this site, it was fun to make games, post what mine progress, brainstorm different juicy ideas, rate & play games from all over the world! And once again I will try to make a little but somewhat fun game (maybe 3D this year 😀). Good luck everyone!!!

I'll be using - Unity for Engine - C# as for the language - Blender for models - Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for UI/textures and a lot of cool stuff - FL studio for music (maybe idk :D )

Fresh Meat

Hello! :D I'm a 2D artist and veryvery green Godot programmer joining for the first time. I'd love to join a team if anyones still looking for extra hands. I'm down to make art, attempt any aspect of programming the game, contribute ideas or just be solid hypeman. I have some art on instagram if you'd like to see a mess of a "portfolio" @questionablil

LD Wallpaper?

Saw some others made a wallpaper, so I thought I'd give it a try myself ^^

Animated for those who want some movement: 48 (1).gif

I'm in, third time!

I wasn't very happy with the themes at first, but after the long thing today about: "What can I do with these themes?" this are my final votes.

Good luck with your games, everyone!

Comprehensive Guide on How to Date Greek Woman

Who is she - a Greek woman? An ordinary girl who will support you in everything and raise children? Or a goddess, with long beautiful hair, beautiful, beautiful, smart? Today I will try to tell you all about Greek girls, their customs, culture, how to meet them, how to date them and finally, how to marry them. Greek women ( https://womenandtravel.net/greek-girls/ ) go for Greek men. It is not using the English language in some odd way, it is the reality of the situation. It is in their culture, Greeks do not like outsiders, recent political events are not helpful at all in this regard. While many young people are, frankly, more lenient in this regard, it is still expected.

The Greeks, in many ways like the Italians, place great emphasis on family and family values. The youngest girls are brought to be mothers, housekeepers. Getting married and having children is the main priority of any Greek woman. In short, traditional family values of a conservative nature rule here. Religion is very important in the life of the Greeks. Family relationships are the same. They believe that upbringing and religion play a big role in determining who you are. They don't know how to hide emotions, and don't even try to do it. Hence the infamous Greek incontinence: if a Greek wants to cry, they will cry outside. If a Greek wants to touch the negotiator's hand - they won't even bother to think about your response. If he / she wants to sing his / her favorite song out loud - he / she will!

Greeks love to dance, not only their traditional dances but everything that is trending. The Greeks are constantly happy and thus they like to express it in every way possible, which is why they often turn to dance. The Greeks are passionate about their craft. They become deeply involved in anything in which they become involved. Even in the most basic of things, a Greek woman struggles and argues about who is better at cooking. Oh, it turns violent. You do not want to hurt the honor of a Greek woman. It is common to use facial expressions as a way of expressing facial expressions, with all the straightness and honesty of the Greeks, it is a good character.

The Greeks are generally quite superstitious. They knock on wood, they spit, and do all that kind of stuff. These superstitions pass from one generation to another, thus, there are fewer of them now, but be aware of this when you travel to Greece. The Greeks are passionate and love their culture. They believe, and they are right about it in a way, that they have invented many things and are the first of many things. They are good at dance. While we have already mentioned it, just think about it. A girl who is good at dance, for all that cultural taste and fire with her. Oh my. Greek women are generally quite good at cooking, they become quite competitive about it and they would like to prove it every single day. They like to drink loving parties, as we have said, dancing and having a good time. And looking at their culture, they are quite good at it.

Ready to rumble!

As Ludum Dare is closing in, we have almost finished preparing ourselves for the biggest task we have taken on so far: streaming our progress live and for the full 72h. And no, we are not entirely sure whether we have thought this through. To be honest, we have mixed feelings about the selected themes - I myself think a lot of them are "acceptable", while some of my teammates are already having mental breakdowns.

So far, we were always able to find some kind of game mechanic that matches the theme, so - fingers crossed - we'll manage to come up with something remotely satisfying again. We would be happy to see you on stream, starting 2h prior to theme announcement, where we will be discussing the themes in the last theme voting! Of course, since this is a competition, we politely ask you not to copy our work, but we invite you to explore approaches that didn't make it into our final vision of our game. If you do, or if you just want us to play your game after the jam, please mention me or submit your game here!

Wahoooo first time

I am in!

It's 2nd time jamming in ludum dare. Curious to see whats the theme.

I'm in with LibGDX

After years of Unity and Godot, I'm gonna use LibGDX on Linux! Will be fun ;) GLHF!

A person played my previous entry almost every day for the last 6 months

I'm still very suprised that it resonated with someone so much. I made the game in less than 12 hours. And while it's very unique and I'm very proud of it. I didn't think that it offered THAT amount of replayability. This is a reminder that once in a while these little games we make means so much to somebody. For me it was Persist (http://ludumdare.com/compo/2013/04/28/play-persist-a-tale-of-redemption/) by @adventureIslands at ludumdare 26 that really stuck with me. I had it on my phone and played it whenever I felt bored or frustrated, for years.

Also this is my previous entry, if you're curious: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/among-me

For the third time. Sharpening pencils and updating Unity versions.

And a placeholder itch page for good measure :P

I'm pretty psyched 🤩

"Game Hosting Guide" - Update Suggestion

In the hosting guide, the website Konregate is no longer accepting new games for hosting. After doing some research we came up on the following two sites that should work for Unity hosting. -https://simmer.io/ -https://gamepipe.io/

It may be worth updating this in the actual hosting guide as well, to limit confusion on Sunday.

Looking forward to Jamming with you all!

Additional tools

Hey everyone!

I've been playing around with some random tools, some of which I've written myself and others that I've come across. Some purchased and others not. But anyway, I wanted to share some of them in case others find them useful!

Pixel Fx Designer (https://codemanu.itch.io/particle-fx-designer)

This is a great tool that lets you easily create particle effect driven spritesheets. In about 1 minute I was able to define a bunch of particle effects to make a nice flame... flames.gif Then export it to a spritesheet for easy importing in a game. flame_32x32.png You can try for these kind of effects if your game engine has a particle engine built in, but I always found messing with them time consuming and difficult to get the look that I wanted. This tool lets you see the changes as you make adjustments and I like pulling the effects in as spreadsheets.

CodeManu (https://codemanu.itch.io/) has a bunch of neat tools available for sale but I find Pixel FX Designer the most useful (although Juice FX is also a lot of fun)

LDtk - Level Design Toolkit (https://ldtk.io/)

@deepnight made this great level editor (available as a pay what you want model https://ldtk.io/). I have been really happy with the autotiling rules that you are able to create. Whenever I make a 2d platformer I always create a simple collision layer and then add the graphical layers on top of that and making the changes to the level means a lot of individual tile work. This takes care of all that for me and lets me see how the level is going to look inside the editor.
makemap.gif

Depending on your engine/framework (if you use one) you might have to write your own importer. It can output as a Tiled .tmx file in a pinch, but I'm using Phaser so working with the native json file has been pretty easy. I'm about 75% of the way through an importer for Phaser and will be done before the start of the jam tomorrow.

Image Outliner (I wrote this)

I wrote a simple tool that just looks through a folder and outlines all the images that it finds with a solid color. I found that I was spending a lot of time doing this manually, so I took half an hour to write a program that does it in batch. Anything I can do to write these kind of tools before the jam is just going to save me headaches later on. outline.png

Any other fun tools people have been messing around with?

IM BACK(probably) AFTER 2 YEARS

First started joining ludum dare back in 2017 when I was in 9th grade high school (we have 6 years of hs and no middle school here). My last entry was 2 years ago and it was a bit of a failure. Now i'm in college and I have more experience. I really owe all my cramming skills to joining ld when I was still 15 years old. Was able to compete and win in hackathons because of it. Now i'm hoping I can return to ludum dare if the theme is good and also if my profs won't give us unnecessary school works in the weekend.

Here we go!

Final round of theme voting. This is where it gets real ... watching Twitch and seeing tons of people brainstorming against all themes ... thinking about the same, but I may just wait and trust in spontaneity

Worst case scenario, it's about a stuck boat same as the rest.

Going to try for the full graphics from scratch, code from scratch, sounds from scratch, so expect a lot it to just be me recorded with Voice Notes :record_button:

Good luck everyone! Only a day and a bit and we can get started!

System Programmer joins the party!

ld48_introduction.jpg

Good evening everyone!

Last year I joined Ludum Dare for the first time. I had lots of fun and made some friends along the way  The theme back then was "Stuck in a loop", I'm sure lots of you still remember that theme  The whole process felt like the image I shared here haha. The game I made had some useful feedback though, I'll share the most noteworthy ones:

  • Add some background music if you have the time
  • Add a background to side-scrolling levels (don't leave it empty)
  • Make something special. Something that is interesting in some way. Not "just a game".
  • If something could be misinterpret as a bug, make sure it very clear it is not a bug
  • People liked the score system very much

I won't use an engine, just javascript. I still don't like that language at all, but it's very fast to code and does the job well enough for me. I want the game to be playable inside almost every desktop browser. For the backend I'll use a combination of PHP and MySQL. The scoreboard in my previous game was received very well, so I'll do my best to integrate some sort of interaction between players again (e.g. a scoreboard, or some other approach).

I have an extra personal limitation for this year's game. There has to be a king in my game! As I'm from the Netherlands and the submission day happens to be Kings day (Koningsdag) in the Netherlands. I thought it would be funny :crown:

This year the theme will be revealed at 03:00AM Dutch time. Which is a bit crazy for me. My plan is to go to bed early and to wake up around 05:30AM. Then I can look at the theme and think about ideas while I eat some breakfast. Hopefully that will be enough to get the most awesome game-ideas known to mankind

You can follow my progress here on the ludum dare website, or on my website: http://wouter52.com/?page=ld48

Another go

Hi,

I have participated in Ludum Dare on and off for (10)? years. On the old LD website my username was 222464 I believe. My gimmick is that my games use some sort of AI/Machine Learning. I'm not really a game dev anymore, I research machine learning, but I like to make ML-based games here from time to time. I always find a way to make the theme work with ML. My best rated game so far was "Hero Must Die" for LD 25, where the AI plays the game and you need to make the levels impossible for it to beat.

Things I have used in the past: - SDL - SFML - C++ - OpenGL - Web Assembly - Gimp

What I will probably use this time: - SFML - C++ - OpenGL - neovim - Gimp (2D) - Blender (3D) - My AI software, AOgmaNeo

If there is an artist out there who wants to team up for this event, let me know!

I'm in!

Ludum Dare 48 will be my first game jam. Trying it out with a team of 3, hopefully we'll have a working prototype at the end!

My 2nd Ludum Dare

2nd Ludum Dare and 2nd game jam. I haven't made a game in a while so I hope this event can chip off the rust for me. Got plenty of time too, just finished my 3rd quadmester so I got no homework this weekend. Good luck everyone.

LEEEEEEEEES GOOOOO

It's time, been a while since my last entry (three years, in fact, for LD40 in fact: Vroom Vroom Kaboom) or the slightly more polished post jam version if you wish :)

Going to be using the following most likely: * Godot 3.2 (used it last time too, very successfully! it's good!) * Sonic Pi (if i get time/inspiration to make small tune, but also maybe for sfx) * Audacity (for light editing/adjustments of the above) * Aseprite

I look forward to returning to the fray, the community spirit is always lovely and seeing the incredible games that pour out of LD is nothing short of exhilirating!

I'll probably be tweeting about stuff while I make the game: _profan

Likely entering the compo this time, good luck everyone!

I'm in

The tools I will use are: - Stencyl - Libresprite - Wavebots editor - Bfxr - Audacity

Will I actually finish something? We'll find out.

Final Round Ideas 1/2

For today and tomorrow I thought I would deviate a little from the idea posts that I've done so far and try and note down the first idea and a little mock-up for each of the themes in the final round.

These are obviously very 'drafty' but I'm hoping that in the very worst case, I should have at least something (however unoriginal the idea may be) to build on.

I'm in!

Participated once before, few years ago. I considered/tried participating a few other times as well. I have this weekend fairly open, so let's go! Tool's I'll be using:

Godot 3.3 (Never used godot before, so I'll keep the scope extra small) SFXR Krita (maybe some other programs as well, such as GIMP or something more fit for pixelart, depending on the game) Emacs, of course

I'll take the first few hours to write a simple game design document, then set up a todo-list in org-mode. I'll also be using a pomodoro timer to assure my efficiency, which has the added benefit of letting me collect data about what took too long afterwards (who knows, maybe it'll even be useful before the end of the jam). Haven't yet decided if I'll be live on twitch or just on Discord hanging out with friends. I don't feel like I need twitch, but voice chat might be a distraction.

Anyway, I'm really excited. Been looking forward to this for quite a while now, especially since I haven't programmed much for school lately.

Ludum Dare 48 Poster

Unfortunately I don't have a higher resolution image, but hopefully you all enjoy anyway! Happy Jamming!

In for another!

I'm in for another time! As with previous times I'm entering the compo, but I've not got quite as much time this weekend as in previous events so I might have to scale it down a bit compared to usual  I'm planning on using Unity, Aseprite, Reaper, and Audacity, but maybe I'll try something 3D with blender this time around. Will probably depend on the theme

I'm in!

I've been a little lazy about finishing Ludum Dares lately, it's time to make up for it. This is the one and only LD48 after all ;)

I'm in

My first Ludum Dare was LD 26 back in 2013. Every time I participate I learn something new, so I'm excited to see what I learn and what cool things other people will make.

I'm going with my usual favorites that I've been using on other personal projects: Godot, Paint.NET, Audacity, and sound/music generators for audio which I am still so, so unskilled with.

Remember to keep healthy habits and of course have fun!

I'm in.

It's been a while since I last participated in a Ludum Dare event (it was still back on the old site!), but now - I'm back in, and fully prepared to create and finish a game (and for the first time I won't be going solo!)

I wish you all lots of good luck. If you participate - remember to sleep well, eat healthy, and have lots of fun during this 48th Ludum Dare!

I'm in!

This is my first ludum dare and second ever game jam. Feeling a tad nervous that I won't finish...

I'm also in

Hry there, L3mmy here, I'm happy to announce that I will take part in this Ludum Dare as an pixel artist, and I'll be teaming up with one of my friend who will take care of the coding but also with a musician so the game can have some of those sweet sweet tunes!

Cya in the jam, stay safe and healthy !

Oh, its on

Ludum dare 48 isn't something I thought I'd participate in, but guess who got unity?

First LD for me

Just wanted to say this will be my first LD ever! I'm very excited. I hope I can submit something =D.

Good luck to everyone!

i am in

literally This is my first participation in the competition "ludum dare" nd the first game jam ,hope acquisition good experience,Any advice?.. thx nd have fun

IM ALL IN

This will be my first Game Jam eer! Excited!

In Once More!

Looks like we’re doing this again, and this time there’s a bunch of us!

Will post tomorrow our tools and team, hope everyone else is as excited as we are!

In case you didn't catch it....

One unified hub for everything that you'll ever need during a game jam

Throughout my time doing 8 Ludum Dare's I've collected several pieces of software that have been helpful. Only problem is there are so many now that I've started to forget about things and then after a jam I'm like, "Darnit I wish I had remembered to use that!" even though I have it installed on my computer. To make sure I don't forget this time around I've created a handy dandy site with links to inspiration, ideas and so many different pieces of FREE software that can help you at any point in the game jam process. Check it out, it's going to become a bookmark on my main browser page throughout this jam so that I can quickly navigate to all my favourite software.

I really hope that you find this a useful tool. I created it for people who are veterans and newbies alike. I know the pain of not knowing what software to choose even though you know a million free pieces of software that do what you want must exist so hopefully this can mitigate that issue.

3 Luigis Mansion Modders, 1 Game

We have finally come down from our clutches with the GameCube masterpiece to give you mere mortals a challenge as Luigis Mansion Modding is obviously the superior art, if ye say differently shall be smited where ye stand! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Warming up a little...

So this will be my 6th Ludum Dare, and my second JAM-entry. Usually I participate in COMPO.

This time I'll be teaming up with my old friend Kaappis.

We're planning to make some kind of a parody of the classic Nintendo's handheld console Game&Watch.

Game.gif

It just so happens that I had made a grid-based menu-system a few weeks ago that seems to be easily re-purposed for this project. As you can see we've already been fooling around with it a little.

Originally we planned to stick to the original aesthetics and limitations of the Game&Watch, but we decided to be more free-form about it.

We'll see in a few days if we can come up with something cool!

I am in

This is my first Game Jam and I am so excited!

LD Hype

Final theme countdown is always controversial. For once I think I like at least half of them, so good chance I'll have an idea to run with this time and will enjoy it.

I have been practicing with Unity to avoid fumbling about with some common pitfalls. Time to grab some scripts from my archive and build a frame from which to start my game. For a lot of jams you end up writing a lot of the same code. Input controller, sound controller, movement controller, camera, menu, etc.

Took tomorrow off from work so I can get everything prepared for a weekend of coding.

One tool many uses.

Why? Like, I've got nothing but Leatherman, and Sonic Screwdriver. Neither of which sound like they could make a decent game for a game jam. Am I missing something? Does anyone have any suggestions to prod the old brain pan?

I commit myself to the fellowship

What fellowship? But the fellowship of fellows all striving independently, of course. To jam, by myself, as good fellows do in the company of other fellows also keeping to themselves. Together, we can achieve anything! But that's against the compo rules, so we'll achieve togetherness individually.

For a change of pace, I'm going to use GameMaker 2.3 instead of Unity. I've gone mad, ol' chap.

had to come back for the big four eight

haven't jammed at all since ld31 iirc, but I've gotta be back for this one. also haven't read the final themes yet; all I know is that I hate them (as is tradition).

will proooobably do this jam in ue4. ableton for sound. dunno what I'll do for modeling yet

see ya on the battlefield, gamers

I'm In!

Howdy! I’m HacksawUnit, from the ‘USA’. I love creating and thinking about all sorts of games.

So, it's the 48th LudumDare. Wow! What a cool milestone... I first started in 2012 with the Jam for LudumDare #25 and #26, but eventually settled into doing the Compo with #27 in 2013. (Big thanks to those who let me join in with them on the Jams all those years ago.) Since then, I've completed sixteen Compo entries, and took one of them all the way to a full release. I've played tons of amazing entries, discovered so many amazing creators, and learned so much...

Ah, all this reminiscing is making me wistful... let's focus on the times ahead, now. Like this weekend! I'm super excited for this LudumDare, special numbering aside. It feels like forever since last time, so I'm ready to really 'go for it'! If you're participating too, I wish you the best of luck!

Favorite tools list:

☕ Construct2: HTML5 game creation software!

☕ Aseprite: Pixel art program!

☕ GIMP: Open source image editor!

☕ LSDJ and bgb: Authentic Gameboy synthesizer and emulator!

☕ Audacity: Open source sound editor!

☕ itch.io: Storefront/games host!

*EDIT: Oh! And I have a new tool to try, too... I got an analogue synth (VOLCA Keys) I might try using. Maybe!

Does anyone know any good online game magazines

I've created one unified hub for everything that you’ll ever need during a game jam

And I want to have some retro/video game magazines under the 'inspiration' section once the theme hits but I've been hard pressed to find any. Does somebody know a good idea?

See it here!

Good luck to all!

This is my second LD and will be (hopefully) my first Compo. I'm very excited and I will be primarily competing against myself; my previous LD game (LD47) ended up in 1,445th place last time. Hopefully I can make the top 500 this time!

I wish everyone the best of luck and, most importantly, enjoy the ride!

PS also, hope that "Parasite" or "Automation" do not make it to the final theme :S

Hey guys. Real excited to get started!

Here's what I'm using...

Game Engine: Construct 3

Sound: chiptone

Sprite Design: Piskelapp

Computer: School Chromebook

lol let's have fun!

First timer

Yep, this is my first time trying something like this, properly at least. I've tried other game jams but get too intimidated to even give them a proper go and I wanna change that, at least this once. So I'm gonna sign up and try my best at this!

Wish me good luck!

Cocoa Moss in for LD48

DDRKirby(ISQ) here reporting that team Cocoa Moss will be joining Ludum Dare once again.

Last time around we made Hide and Seek, a horror game with an emphasis on atmosphere and storytelling. We ended up with a 1st place medal in the "Mood" category.

hide-and-seek-new.gif

This will be my 24th time doing LD and my 15th time working together with @xellaya, who will be helping with art and animation while I take care of implementation and audio. Concept and design will be a joint venture between both of us, of course.

My starter code is split between two repositories: This one which is the shared "library" of scripts and such and This one which is the project template itself. Neither of these two are mature projects so I would not recommend using them, but they contain a bunch of common useful stuff like screen transitions, basic audio handling, site-locking code, some basic UI effects, and that sort of thing. As you might expect, it tends to expand bit by bit with each passing LD as I find more and more things that are useful to have around.

We have been moving towards making more games with a focus on dialogue, so I have been working towards adding support in this framework/template for RPG-style text boxes so they don't have to be re-implemented from scratch every single time.

As a heads up to all Godot developers, Godot 3.3 has just recently released and is a recommended upgrade for pretty much everyone. There have been some changes to the way that HTML5 exports work, so that is worth familiarizing yourself with -- in particular the availability of threaded builds, which seems great but unfortunately is not yet supported across all browsers.

In past LDs we've had a funny thing happen where we end up having a pretty high bar for ourselves in terms of making polished and well-thought out games -- in particular trying to make very cohesive narratives. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, but perhaps not entirely well-suited to a jam timeframe. We're thinking to maybe take things a little more loosely this time and treat LD as a time for free-flowing experimentation, but, well...you know what they say about the best-laid plans of mice and men...

See you all at the starting line, where you know people are bound to be hating on the theme that's selected, no matter what it is! ;)

Advice for newcomers

I've participated a few times, so I like to share my experience and gained knowledge with new jammers.

Scope your game properly You have three days to make a game? Try to design something you can make in only one. It'll take twice as long as you think. The final day is for bug testing and polish. If you manage to finish everything WAY early, you can expand on the completed game. It's better than rushing or running out of time.

Be healthy Get sleep. Eat three meals. Spend time with your family. Staying awake for 72 hours isn't going to make your game good, and it's definitely not good for you.

Easy games are appreciated Jammers will play your game for a minute or two, vote, and move on. Make games that can be played in their entirety in a short time, or at least will show the player all it has to offer.

Small teams are okay My best games were made by myself or with one other person. Too many developers just get in each others way. If you have a large team, might want to consider splitting into smaller teams.

Accept and embrace criticism Some people get defensive, but it's really not fun or helpful. Some jammers are afraid of being critical, fearing retaliatory bad votes. Critical feedback is the most honest and most helpful. Always remember, it isn't the player that doesn't understand your game, it's that you didn't understand your player.

Get started early In the jam, you're allowed to start with any base code. So, make anything you can. I keep unity packages with basic features that have nothing to do with the theme, like pause/restart buttons. It's currently final round for theme selection, so look them over and come up with ideas for each potential theme. See if you can think of ideas that will work with more that one.

You have to play games, too You aren't even in the ranking unless at least 20 people vote on your game. The best way to get voters on your game is to play, vote, and comment on other people's games. I make it a point to play the games of everyone who comments on mine.

Im in!

Yeaaa lets do this! Theres a kind of game I never really made before, this is a great opportunity to give it a shot! Gonna shoot for a compo entry this time. Will be streaming this on twitch at https://www.twitch.tv/frankiepixelshow !

Uh uh

Planning to do the contest. No code ready. Do not know the library I am going to use. Probably raylib. Don't know it. Don't have a graphics pipeline. Have no ideas about how to handle sound.

After watching @@adamcyounis livestream of his prep for 5 minutes, I think I'm in trouble.

Would anyone like music?

Hey all, had to "create" a game to make this post, but would love to provide audio and music for anyone who's interested. It's just so much fun and my friends haven't done a game jam in years soooo yeah I'm bored and love making music for games and would love to be challenged to fit whatever weird theme you find. Just message me! <3

Anyone streaming their game making process?

We are! Twitch.tv/MABCat for narrative design, and Twitch.tv/Saradamon for coding! I (MABCat) will be starting around 8:30 EST. Come on down and hang with us! :)

In, probably, for the Compo!

Haven't done an LD since 44 so I'm excited to do it again! Hopefully I can improve my sub-50% completion rate for LD games. :D

Probably using Unity for this one. I do miss the days of doing these from almost-scratch in C++, but I can get so much more done in Unity...

First time here

This is my 1st time I'm attending any Game Jam. I'm thinking of using Unity, C#, Bosca Ceoil for the music, and Photohop for some pixel sprites. Best of luck to everyone!

LETS GO (ง'̀-'́)ง

18 hours! LETS MAKE SOME EFFIN GAMES !! Follow us on https://twitter.com/PunchingPandaGJ or here, whatever floats your boat (ᵔᴥᵔ)

I'm in for LD48!

It's been a long time since I've submitted a Ludum Dare game, mostly because life gets in the way, as it tends to do. But how can I miss LD48?? I remember looking forward to it when I first did LD28. "Twenty more jams to go!" It seemed a long ways away.

Alright, what am I'm using?

  • Rust compiled to Webassembly: I want to see how far I can push a web game. I've always liked making them, since they are so easy to distribute, but Javascript is always a bottleneck, both performance-wise and code-quality-wise. I've been learning Rust in the last year so this is a great opportunity to try it out.
  • To that end, I'll be using open source tools such as wasm-pack with rust
  • Gimp, my go-to graphics editor
  • I don't expect to need 3D assets, but if I do, then I'll use Blender
  • Undecided on whether to code from scratch or use a boilerplate/simple engine such as Quicksilver.

Let's do this!!!

I'm In LD#48

Looking forward to participating in Ludum Dare 48!

Good luck tonight everyone.

As usual I'm going to try something different and out of my comfort zone. Maybe I won't finish, maybe I will. Every time it's a blast though.

That time though!

My weekend schedule isn't ideal, but hey, I'll be fine... I think. Regardless, I'm in.

I'm in!

So it's been a few years but... definitely giving this one a try! I will probably use my trusty Java game framework "katsu" (https://github.com/berkano/katsu) which is built on top of LibGDX. Recently upgraded all its dependencies & checked it still runs OK. Watch out for some definite programmer art, bleepy bloopy music and confusing gameplay!! Best of luck everyone and HAVE FUN!

Pre-Jam jam?

As I said on my other blog post, I'm completely new to game jams and game engines, but not programming. My goal was to use the time before LD48 starts to learn as much of Godot as possible.

Well, I probably won't be winning any awards for it, but I got the hang of the engine in many aspects! I've managed to implement Pong, the only thing missing from it is an UI and actual game states (title screen, win, lose). What should have took an hour or two took almost 6 because of inexperience, and I'm still not sure if I've done 100% sound choices as sometimes, for some reason, the ball manages to push my paddles out of the X axis for some pixels, even if I actually made them all kinetic bodies and had proper layer/mask configuration.

But I can't complain, it sure works, plays like pong, and even has pluggable AI into one/both of the paddles. I'm sure 3 days will be enough to implement SOMETHING resembling a game when the jam starts (:

I'm off for a nap now... it's going to be a fantastic friday work day for me, going to sleep almost 4am in the morning.

LF artist...and good luck to everyone!

Me and @FlyingKiwi are looking for an artist - can be simple 2D (preferred tbh) for this LD48. If there's any artist out and about, or you know of one, we would love it if you/they could reach out! We are super friendly and already work cross time zones online so this would be a totally cool addition to the team!

Alternatively we might have to use img packs online and opt out of art :(

Good luck to all! I'm so hyped to get started!

LD48 -- I'm in!

Looking forward to entering Compo again this year for the first time in a while. Going to try out Godot for the first time ever and also try my hand at pixel art for basically the first time ever.

Should be fun!

Looking for a composer!

Sadly our goto composer and sound-man is burried under work this weekend. We are a developer and a designer, we can cover almost everything, UI, programming, animation etc., but we think our games need good sound design too!

Anyone interested? :)

I'm In, and ready to fail

So been doing this since #8:Swarms and I'm happy to say I'm in again, ready to fail again and enjoy it. Going to use it as an excuse to smoke out my new Vulkan/OpenXR framework.

LD48 already?!

All of a sudden, it’s the last day before Ludum Dare 48. How did this happen?!

Of course, I had such big plans to create a post mortem version of last jam’s game [https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/stuck-in-the-loop-dungeon], which was my first entry. But, as with many things you’re inexperienced with, it seems I miscalculated that just a tiny little bit…

Anyway, looking back, I also had lot’s of chances to practice game dev skills in the meantime.

So, the plan is this: I’ll take all the great feedback I received during LD47 (thank you again!), all the big plans I had for the post mortem version, as well as the stuff I worked on since then and… simply use those as a starting point for the upcoming jam. How about that, sounds ok? Yeah, at least I think it does!

Good luck everyone for LD48! LD47_lookback.png

I join LD48! (Maybe) with PICO-8.

I'm so happy to join this event again.

I plan to use PICO-8 as LD47, my first LDJam.

But, I learned to use other engines, Unity, Godot and Defold Engine. I may use Defold if my plan game not fit PICO-8.

My goals are...

〇Finish 〇Never Crunch 〇Have Fun 〇Ranked 100th...

...I use bad English, so I don't know which, 100th or more/less, means better.

We are in!

Hello everyone. Participating Ludum Dare for the 13th time! :skull:

Brainstorming

Have you also started brainstorming? I usually start, whithin the final voting round and try to come up at least with some rough ideas for the themes. Especially for that ones, I like the least.

It just usually doesn't work that well because in the end the theme wins that I had no idea for. 💩😭💩
