Ludum Dare 50 April 2–5, 2022

Well, that was fun!

Turns out focusing on a simple mechanic and polish is the best way to finish a half-decent game during a game jam. Who knew!

gameplay_short.gif

Of course there is a lot I can add. First of all I want to come up with a color blind mode. Perhaps I'll add an icon to the player character. A multiplayer mode will be fantastic! And it's not hard to do. So keep an eye on the game if interested. Than there are plenty of bugs, especially visual ones. So yeah, there is work to be done :D But I'm quite satisfied with the results!

You can rate it here if you like: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/dashfight C'mon, don't be shy! We both know you want it ;)

some cool render for our VN background done by @Griszka !

Hehe, i'm in Danger

Day 2 is done! I feel like the most difficult bit is over, namely the production and logistics system. Works all nice and tidy, although i'm sure some things will come up in testing. Tomorrow is left for battling the monsters, playtest, polish, sounds, win/lose condition, tutorials. No time to waste :D danger.gif

Beginning of decay season

End of day 2 - we have an economy!

Things are going pretty well here. I mean, it's almost too beautiful to be true. Just now, I heard Bouteille saying "hey, it works", is'nt it great?

So, our little city-builder is now something that can be played. The economic system has been implemented. It need some adjustments, but it's quite ok for the moment.

Bouteille's code works perfectly so far. Here is a part of her work, we know that's not the most beautiful code you've ever seen in your life, but hey, it's a game jam, and we're just hobbyists:

Our todo lists are ready for tomorrow. And we hope everything is going to be fine. Sorry for the blurry photo, my camera seems to be as tired as we are.

So, what's in this blurry todo-list? A lot of things. The most important things right now are the UI revamp, and adding some sounds. This little town is really too quiet.

Good luck to everyone working to finish their compo-project for the remaining 3 hours. Can't wait to play your games! For us, it's time to go to bed, we're exhausted.

Trying to make yet another NES game

Turns out making a sidescroller was harder than I expected...

No way I'll finish in time for Compo, so Jam it is (I hope I don't have to resort to Extra)

Less Than Three Hours Left....

....And since I'll be busy later, that means I have maybe about an hour and a half to make an ending screen, a title screen, and a boss battle. Looks like I'll be cutting it pretty close.

More source code help?

Ok, so I have uploaded my game to here https://tinypig.itch.io/bacterial-protection and it works for me and I have submitted that. As for the source code, I have uploaded it here https://github.com/TinyPig10/BacterialProtection2 , is that the right stuff or do I need to download more. I just don't want to get disqualified. Thank you. Sorry if this the wrong place to put this.

Last progress before Compo ends

It's now midnight and I gotta do my actual job tomorrow, so I will now got to bed...

But I'm happy what I got done by now, basically just need some actual gameplay. Now you can only watch the world slowly drown. Bild/em2022-04-04_000729.png

have fun in the last three hours of compo and we see us tomorrow to hopefully finish work for the jam :muscle:

Creating a steampunk world

After making a 2D game last year, we decided to set our goals higher and make a 3D action packed shooter with a little graphical twist. Here is a screenshot of yesterday's progress with our first enemy type.

We are out of a JAM - Rest in pizza

Well, unfortunately, our ambitions have surpassed us

It happens. I think it's part of the game jamming - sometime you just need to admit that you won't finish your game on time. And oh boy, we tried really hard that I'm writing it with my eyes only partially open and with one leg inside my bed.

Our idea

We had some ideas. But two came to the forefront. A game about a knight who really needs to take a shit - the game would be kept in the Half Minute Hero (DiarrHero!) concept, where the goal would be to get to the loo.

However, our hearts were stolen by a second idea!

A card game where you are a comedian and have to choose jokes from your deck so as not to offend someone in the audience too much (based on traits like skin color, body type, being a ginger, gender and so on). And as we know, as a comedian you won't be able to delay the inevitable forever.

And when someone gets too offended - well, Will Smith can tell you what's done to comedians who have ill-fitting jokes.

Pssst, there was a plan for a final boss to be an audience on Academy Awards. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

We will be back!

But it's not that we give up completely. We will finish the game, but in our own time. From my side - I had a great time, even if we failed in the end.

Good luck to everyone!

Day 2 of Jammmm Done

Finished all my art today- Minus a title screen (saving the fun parts for tomorrow, basically, as well as the awful parts of testing and debugging over and over). Spent about 9 hours straight just... making art... then 2 hours straight putting it into the game and adding sound effects etc I'm learning the funny thing about point and clicks, is that because I'm testing so much, I really don't know if my game is genuinely 3 minutes long or if it's just because I've absolutely optimised where I click and I know the exact process to get to the end... Hopeeefully that's it... The "main feature" of the game, rather than having something like a complex inventory or combining items, is actually being able to jump between different rooms using text related to those rooms found on the objects around you. Not gonna lie, the room transitions look whacky. Here's one of the 6 'rooms' (tiny screens lol) to explore! screen3_office.png

Oof

48 hours is a very short time. I got something working but not something I can really enter the compo with (probably). So much more to be done. So little time. My back is killing me. I got to tap out (of the compo). Here's the current iteration: https://ambi.itch.io/survivor

Cloning an existing well defined game idea (Vampire Survivors) shortens the time quite a bit, but getting stuck into weeds like autotiling and procedural level generation really eats all those gains and then some.

I learned a lot. New engine (Godot). New ideas (procedural world creation, autotiling). Doing everything with optimal, most well oiled workflow would give a better end result, but what would be the fun in that?

Wait For It is over ! First game jam ever for me, fun but pretty intense !

I'm so glad I could finish my game as I intended in good conditions, even though it was pretty stressful... I must have put something like 32 hours in total for this compo !

Looking forward to trying and rating all your games !

This is mine, "Wait For It" - a wacky and weird Wario Ware inspired game, where you try to go through as many quick challenges as possible to save and serve your beloved cake... which will eventually lay flat on the ground.

The Flower of Marasca: out now!

My LD50 entry, The Flower of Marasca, is now complete! I think this is the most polished Compo entry I've ever submitted, so I'm very proud of myself.

It's available on Newgrounds, itch.io, and the TIC-80 website. Give it a go, and see if you can earn just a little more time with your beloved...

Done and dusted!

Second LD entry - I tend to only get a few hours for these jams because I work weekend shifts. I think I scoped this one pretty well, I didn't finish all my goals but the game doesn't feel like it's obviously missing anything.

Now for a well deserved nap!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Less than 2 and a half hours left and I still haven't hooked up any of the logic for the UI. And I'm wasting time posting...

I didn't realize I was creating a juggling sim

Physics is a boatload of fun. I think I'll abandon my original idea and just make a juggling simulator!

So far very excited to very soon show what I've made! About 33 hours of development so far. Whew!
