It's not Wednesday, my dudes :'(

We're not gonna make it

Thought we had a simple idea, but realized it was harder than it initially seemed, both coding and visually wise. Maybe we will have enough time and energy to figure it out for Extra category, but no promises :pensive:

In the meantime, I'll share character and animation concepts and my futile attempts at figuring out ui

What? How?

Someone needs to rescue his tiny creatures!!

promo.png

No, my creatures!

A villain appeared in front of you and your creatures, caged them and teleported them away. You were able to just get into the portal to save your creatures.

Will you be able to survive this bullethell?

Dive in, get some weapons and mow down your enemies until all your creatures are saved. Beware the boss at the end is pretty tough, stack up on some ammo and maybe change your appearance to end him once and for all!!

Terrible name, Kanker Killer

LD56Title.png Well, I had to rush to think of a name before submission period ended, but this works well enough

I'm surprised I managed to get so much done this weekend, though still wish I could have gotten even more done :P However I stayed awake for a total of 43 hours (5 hour sleep in the middle) so I don't think it would have been healthy to push more than that :(

LD56Screenshot1.png

Either way, this time I wanted to make a nuclear throne like game, but with organs instead of mutations. Of course the theme was somewhat of a wrench in that plan, until I realised I needed a source of organs, and tiny creatures would do quite nicely

LD56Screenshot2.png

Check out my game HERE!

And it's over.

screenshot.png Not exactly proud of everything that i've made, but at least i've made something, even if it's very basic. The final product ended up having a lot of rough edges, but the important thing is that I tried. I'm really not used to working in such a short time constraint, but I guess that serves as experiences for future jams.

I barely had time to even upload, all the pages (LD and Itch.io) looks like trash LOL!

And don't even get me started on having issues with the HTML5 export... ugh

Mmmmm... Honey

2024-10-06_18-48.png

I really bit off more than I could chew this time! But I got something cohesive together and I really like the direction of it.

This is my first time building a 3D game. So I decided it would be a great idea to do a dynamically generated map, fully rigged models, and an RTS! What could possibly go wrong

At the end of the day, I had a fantastic time with this compo. Learned a massive amount. Shoutout to Imphenzia for his Blender content! Now I have the itch to build something bigger.

Had a lot of fun!

frimpf.png I couldn't include all my tiny creatures in this game in time, but I hope to follow-up on the game to make more little guys like this one!

Digging Creatures!

The procedural map is up and running, and our little creatures are digging their way through the rock walls. We also wrote a generator to add some variety to the dwarf designs, and we’re happy with how it’s coming along. Hope you’re all enjoying the jam and making good progress! Happy creating!

It's an awesome feeling to have finished something in 48 hours and see everyone's compliments (thank you all for playing btw!!).

If you haven't tried it yet, it's not too late! Play as an entire ant colony, contolling individual ants to gather food while simultaneously dodging deadly beetles, then turn the tables & fight back!

You play as an alien trying to absorb life energy of some annoying creatures. They are too pitiful for honest fight so they'll will attack you with some tasteless aircraft.

Tips: You can heal by landing energy balls (because they cause major casualties). The more HP you have at the end the better grade you'll get. Try to live longer, later you'll have more time to charge your most demolishing attack

My First Ludum Dare In 3 Years!

I've tried to enter a few of these before, but not since 2021's BugDive have I actually finished one in time! Last Rollbug is a little platformer with a bouncing bug guy experiencing the horrors of being a tiny creature and also the horrors of there being giant monsters. I'm pretty happy with how it came out, especially considering I had to work for a lot of the weekend and only had about half the time. I did find a bug that crashes the game if you're afk on the first level for like 8 seconds (so uhhh.... don't do that. Shame, but I'll fix it in a later release after the Ludum Dare. It's nice to be back!

Some progress

Doing family stuff or other obligations over weekend means I'm jammming again and finishing up most of the issues tomorrow.

So far have most of the controls, mobile support and some music, now just need to add cats, a goal, and a proper game loop.

Starting to become playable!

It's amazing what happens once you've got enough of a codebase together. The pretty picture doesn't do it justice.

2024-10-07-0149-input-and-editing.png

Anyway, features so far: - You can select and move creatures around with keyboard and/or mouse - Complete with flood-fill path detection! - You can toggle in and out of edit mode to edit the board (mouse only)

Stuff to implement next: - Actual level win condition - Loading and saving of levels - Switching between multiple levels - Editing of creature positions + counts + types - This is begging for a right-click popup menu. - Reload the level when switching to edit mode

And then: - Add buttons - Add normally-open/normally-closed doors - Implement the puzzles I have on paper (3 so far) - Add help info - Come up with more puzzles

So yeah, level file support.

EDIT: Oh right, forgot to mention, apparently I have 647 lines of code now.

C͉̞͂‍h͙̺̐‍ä̝͖‍r̀̄̊‍l̗ͨ͐‍e̛͍ͨ‍ś̕.

My Compo entry is pretty unfinished, though the (simplified) core loop is mostly there. This is not a post about "please play my game" because I don't think anyone should, but...

I've shared my silly encoding journey before, with Futhark Encoding (used in a couple previous Compo entries). This time, I used a different method, which I haven't written up yet, which uses diacritics to bake data into text. You can copy a bit of text to your clipboard, my game will read it, and then it will use that in some way! It's a cool bit of technical magic that I'm very proud of, even if the whole game wasn't everything I was hoping for this time.

Anyhow, you can summon C͉̞͂‍h͙̺̐‍ä̝͖‍r̀̄̊‍l̗ͨ͐‍e̛͍ͨ‍ś̕ if you want. image.png Just copy his name, start my game, and light the candles at the doorway at the top of the desk. I'd love to know if people want a write-up of the cursed encoding algorithm, too! The code is public here, but it can be a bit dense for people who aren't Rust-literate.

Finished the game ahead of the Jam deadline.

And of course, I'll start updating stuff on the game's itch.io page once the Jam phase formally ends.

Back into Ludum Dare after many years

I skipped the last 10 Ludum Dare, so I'm glad to be back.

And what have I done?!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tU79fNEOEFA

I don't even know what to call this. But I guess the goal is to build some kind of playground for tardigrades. The two main goals are to help tardigrades reproduce, but also keep them entertained. There's only one thing that tardigrades love, and it's to skydive from high places with no parachutes. In this game, all you can do is draw and erase terrains.

This game is weird, I don't even know how you're supposed to play it, but from what I gathered, the strategy is a balance between making holes to gather the tardigrades, and build high rise walls for them to jump from.

I pretty much setup the tardigrades logic, then try to figure out what the game is all about, which is weird. I initially was planning for the ability to add buildings, upgrades, etc... and make this some sort of city building game.

But since I didn't have enough time at the end, I decided to just have the wall drawing logic then add some logic around the "thrill" meter to provide some challenge.

So there you have it! Please let me know what you think about it!

It's actually coming together

Haven't had much time to post my progress. I spent so much time yesterday figuring stuff out with Blender and ragdolls in Unity that I was sure my game was doomed to fail and I wouldn't have anything. But today was productive and I have a game, mostly. It could use a lot more polish (audio in particular, I only have one sound effect in) and maybe expanding on the gameplay if I can.

Anyway, here is a frog. frogsmol.png

Behold... Scrubby Shrimp!

After a weekend of coding, designing, and cleaning virtual algae, we're proud to announce our Ludum Dare 56 game, Scrubby Shrimp! 🦐

In this whimsical 2D adventure, you play as a tiny shrimp navigating the aquarium, dodging obstacles, jumping for algae, and showing off shrimp acrobatics. We had a blast bringing this aquatic world to life, and we can’t wait for you to try it out!

Check it out and see if you can master the tank cleaner's life. And in the spirit of this momentous occasion... behold, shrimp! 🦐✨

48 hour update(part 1)

After two LOOOOOONG days, I sat down with my teammates and wrote a beautiful exposition about our game, PolyGone. However, I cannot find the draft. So here I am, trying to find my draft and also wanting to do my cool first ever Ludum Dare update.

Hopefully I can find it.

Enjoy a laid back cute platformer? try Cardboard Kitty, made with my 8 year old

We are done!

Cardboard Kitty is a simple and playful adventure platformer game made by myself and my daughter Alyx (She’s 8). Embark on a cute adventure in a world of cardboard and authentic drawn characters.

Cardboard Kitty was created in Unreal Engine 5.6 (UE5-Main) and makes extensive use of the new MegaLights feature set along with Lumen, Nanite etc.

Alyx Drew all the sprites and designed the quests, I did all the 3D art & logic.

I always wanted to make some tycoon-like game. So here it is! I can't beleive that in Sat morning I thought it will take 2-4 hours. Reality bites. I had to cut some features, like lonyless of animals (so I have unused heartbreaking icon). But I like how it looks like.

BTW, I made it with Godot 4. Godot is awesome.

Progress 'Sunday' - Text adventure

Well... It is quite late Monday already, I am pretty tired... But also very excited. The game itself is actually finished enough! There likely are some mistakes around, be it grammar or otherwise but there is an actual story with different choices you can follow. I decided to have 'endings' and a 'To be continued' screen. This is to not make a book out of it, 72 hours is already short, and even though I am only focused on some aspects as I have no worries about sounds and what else... All. I. Have. Been. Doing... Is write a story- I am so done with it  Now I get the despair of my SO when he made a story-game, doing the same for hours upon hours upon hours... And I don't even put more then 12 hours a day or so in it. Besides that, it won't help for the ratings people stop midway, I rather have them play twice and more if they are able to then read one full route. It made to be a story that allows you via other routes to get different information to understand the setup.

Anyhow, this is how my screen looked like when I was finished, all spoilers have been taken out. storytreeld56 feed.png

Now off to bed, I figured out how to upload it to itch. io, so tomorrow only the description page and some banner or something left... After finally putting my SO at it to play. My back, oh dear... :older_woman:

Game Dev

Okay here I am livestreaming on kick. https://kick.com/maxminmaxer

Improving my 50% finish rate probably..

First time using godot, git issues, and a fairly art heavy game, and we decided to try going for vibes more than fun... We're probably going to make it, but it might suck, lol!

edit: yeah we didn't make it. one more day and we'd have been able to put all of the pieces together, but right now we just barely managed to get it running, the game play is only half-done, some of the levels have broken/missing geometry, and our music/story elements weren't fully implemented.

At 65%!

Well, late Sunday evening and I'm certainly not going to have a complete project by 15 hours. If there's an EXTRA category I'll try to push for that, but I absolutely love the theme - I'm going to keep working on this thing.

Character controllers are evil things, especially when you have to make something new custom - that ate up 90% of my time, and it still needs tweaking. Health interrupted too last night, and I was put out with a migraine for way too many hours.

Anyone else track their time?

I am making an art heavy game for the first time in a jam. I have also been tracking my time on each task with my Timular device. Pretty crazy stats!

MondayMorningStats.jpg

Throwing in the Towel on Ludum Dare 56 (Jam)

It seemed like everything went wrong this week, from going to the ER, to having to spend time repairing blown up monitors, and finally having to move my desktop into the office and reinstall all of my gamedev software on it...

That being said, I also haven't used Unity in over a year, and instead of spending the weekend making the game I wanted to make, I spent most of that time relearning the basics (including why I hate the Cinemachine camera controllers). Instead I really should have been using a shader that culled occluding faces, instead of doing that freaking yo-yo zoom. -- Oh well. Stuff for me to play with later. 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, there's no way I'm finishing a game before tomorrow morning, so I think I'll just have to sit this one out. It was fun guys, and I can't wait to play the rest of your games. 🤘

Hey, I actually made something!

I didn't think I would get to participate in this LD but I managed to find a few hours this afternoon and made this little game.

It's super simple but a little challenging and kind of charming (in my opinion).

You can play and rate it here

Good luck to everyone who's still working away! Have fun!

I'm out. Again.

Seems I still haven't learned to build a minimal prototype.
I could have tested my concept on paper or with a simple no / low-fidelity GUI prototype. Instead - with me coming back to Godot after eight years - I spent way too much time on physics and input handling. I had a navigation system in mind that would feel just right. After 48 hours with two of my main mechanics coming together I realized: My idea doesn't work. Or at least, that I my idea depends on additional mechanics, with not enough time left to add them.
This is the first learning: Do a quick prototype. To be honest, this is not the first time I'm learning this lesson, but every Ludum Dare I get the feeling that there is not enough time for prototyping.

So I decided to end this Ludum Dare early and not submit anything. A part of me wants to see how much can be done until the deadline, but I know I wouldn't be content with the result. I will try to make better use of my time and do something, that makes me happy.
I had a lot of fun brainstorming and coming back to game development, I learned some things and refreshed my memory on others. So I end this on good terms. I'll try to come back next time, and maybe even join a team!

Best of luck to the remaining participants!

Less than 12 hours left!
