Ludum Dare 56 October 4–7, 2024

Progress; Art and gameplay mechanics!

Switched the machinegun to a cannon that you charge up! It's a lot more fun and adds more depth to the gameplay. Gonna add a few more enemies and a way to get points, and make sure you die if you get hit obviously lol. Things are coming together nicely!

I was able to run the game on HTML5 on my phone (Cant actually play but it runs) and I was getting a stable 60FPS, even with the light layer I added! Everyone should be able to play this game :)

Horror games, anyone?

I haven't seen anyone making a horror game so far (except for some scary spider models if that counts).

So if you're into that sort of thing, I hope we will have got you covered.

Screenshot_1.png *an early draft preview

My first Compo entry is done!

With still a couple of hours left before the deadline I managed to actually create a complete game in a weekend where I only had ~12 hours to make something. If you're also already done with yours why not be the first to give this game a rating and some feedback? Leave a link to your game in the comments and I'll give it a play too.

Progress by the end of second day

Cutting the scope anywhere we can, getting something that looks like a game by the end of Day 2… Hands hurt form coding, but we must press on!

DEFINITELY not a Zelda Clone

The old man in the Legend of Zelda is helpful. Dangerous.gif

This took me entirely too long. I still need the levels...

Tiny Creatures are slowely evolving

Our game is really coming together, it's the most proud we've been at this stage. We just to make sure we capture that fun now!

How it started: before_tiny.gif

How it was going: after_tiny.gif

How it is going! howemits/emgoing.gif

So... I made it?

This is the first time I publish an entry with so much time left ahead.

img02.png

I don't belong to the group of heroes that do absolutely everything on their own so I cannot participate in the compo (I used some CC-licensed models & audio) but I'm very happy I was able to finish something in such a short time by myself.

It's also the first time I use godot for this and it's worked great really. I'm quite happy such a tool exists and it's only getting better.

Good luck to everybody that is still in the middle of the jam!

I am out.

So I have decided to not finish the competition this time. I had some changes that I wanted to implement, but I do not have enough time to change plan and I am not going to punish myself by trying to implement the changes with such little time. So I am finished this one with a loss. But, I am cool with that. I learned some new things while creating what I have.

Learning new things and challenging my self is why I do these. I've learned quite a bit from this one. So while I am not finishing the competition. It's still a win in my book.

Recording the game

I was recording the Club Penguin clone I made for the Jam while I was AFK.

How's it all going?

Hey jammers! Our first blog post, how are your games doing? We're fine and now making level generation and check out this art! imageem2024-10-06/em221817933.png

All the best! Morning tea studion

Finished early for once!

I had time to make music but I couldn't come up with anything and decided, whatever, I've done well enough without it in the past. And so, behold: Color Critters! Swap between the critters and use their unique abilities as you guide them through 15 puzzling levels of increasing difficulty!

ld56_3.gif

Check it out here, and let me know what you think! I'm looking forward to playing everyone else's games during the rating period, but until then, I'm going to go celebrate getting the Compo finished early for a change!

Done!

2 hours and a half before the deadline ':D I just can't work on it anymore. It's almost what I had in mind except for a few missing FX, but I fear that not everything that a good falling-blocks puzzle needs. Quite proud of it, anyway. ^-^

Slow but Steady Progress

These enemies sure don't seem to like the tiny creatures...

Going for a Jam!

I haven't touched Godot since last LD and I got really rusty. I've still got several pesky bugs to squash, so I'm not gonna finish my entry in time for the compo. But there's always the Jam, right? :D

So, long story short, I'm doing as much as I can today, but I'm finishing it tomorrow. It's either that or entering buggy mess with no graphics and no audio. I think the first option will work better. ;)

Victory!

Well, my game was overly simplistic, but I made a whole game in 46 hours, 40 minutes. Whew! Time for some much-deserved celebration!

Incoming Cellular Activity! Screenshot from 2024-10-06 14-46-26.png

Prototype done - again a project way to b...

... way to big for a game jam. Finally I'm done with coding and my game works as aspected and has 95% of all the features I wanted it to have. But I'm way behind shedule. Tomorrow I'll have less time than today but I have to make all the art and sound effects.

Concratulation to all the Compo finisher.

BeetleWars!

:snail: Get ready to punch some beetles! :snail: Screenshotem3.png :snail: And listen to some tunes too! :snail: Screenshot/em2.png

Here's another canvas full of Stuff

The way I'm making art for this game is by making these big canvases full of every kind of item, character, and decoration I'll need for the scene, so I can see everything in context, and then saving them all as separate files so I can place them wherever I want in the game. So in the end I'm left with a pretty chaotic final piece.

Captura de tela 2024-10-06 170135.png

it's just not good enough

2 hours on the clock so much things to do... I don't think I can finish this and call it any good, and my brain is going on a strike so I wanna sleep... dang it... I need so many sound effects and the main game loop was unmendable so it's boring... really not my greatest performance (minus the music that went really well)

Another COMPO finished...!

I made it...!

This one became something different again and I'm happy about the results.

And for the rest of the jammers and compoers... good luck, YOU CAN DO IT!

screenshot_4 263.png

Finally DONE

I am so proud to be done with my compo.

Screen2.png

Question: how to judge in a team

This is my first time participating in this jam, maybe I searched poorly, but I didn't find this:

Should all members of the development team evaluate the games, and will this be taken into account in the "coolness" of our game, or will only the team leader's evaluation be considered? If the latter is true, does this not lead to "sharing accounts"?

update update

(ignore the text at the bottom of the screen; it's outdated)

creature animation works when using my choice screen, yaaay

2024-10-0622-28-38online-video-cutter.com-ezgif.com-video-to-gif-converter.gif

tiny (hehe) problem: every choice button and every critter are hand placed and I have to do this for every choice in my vn

BUT

when that's finally done then there's only adding the updated story script and working on a custom menu left

I absolutely won't get this done for the compo but getting it done for the jam should be easy

(also I'm regretting like ... every life choice lol)

(WHY did I decide to work on a visual novel???)

(and why couldn't I just work with like ... one or two backgrounds, two or three sprites and that's it?)

(noooo, I just HAVE to make my life way way harder lol)

Infestation Eradication: Day "two" progress

  logo.png

It's day 2 of the jam, and I got started on my game! So like... it's day 1 for me. Social events kept me from starting on things yesterday, but thankfully I managed to get a text-adventury idea going today.

day1.png

A few previous entries are definitely influencing this one, the lack of time is making me rely on things I have previously learned. That's not necessarily a bad thing I suppose.

My main worry is that I am still stuck fiddling with mechanics and actually playing the game might not be engaging--a constant struggle I always run into. I do have to work tomorrow, so there's really only a few hours left for me in the evening to slap things into shape. We'll see how that one goes! But now I sleep!

Thumbs_v12.png

Done! finally...

sign.png

I'm finally done with building everything, taking screenshots and uploading all the files. I think I'll use the remaining time to get a first glance at a few games. You guys have made some incredible stuff!

Level4 or so.png

Good luck to everyone still working! You're almost there!

Progressing the Tiny Creatures.

BoyHutch0004.png

We've been making good progress, our tiny creatures and our player are mostly set up. There's even a fail state now. The tiny creatures are called the Boys and we love them.

Can't see my game in the published Compo games

I think I've published my game correctly

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/56/finger-gun

But I'm not seeing it, even when I check the games in private browser mode.

Anyone know what's up?

Need more time

We get close to the end of the Compo and my game isn't ready... 😥

I give up and I would submit my game for the jam. Good luck to all those in the home stretch! 😘

Nearing completion for DeskBuddy!

We're currently polishing last details for DeskBuddy, to make your experience as enjoyable as possible!

My Buddy has gone to sleep! I hope the compo people manage to submit their entries before going to bed as well :muscle:

We'll be submitting ours tomorrow along with the other jam teams. Whether you have an hour or a whole day left, good luck to everybody :fourleafclover:

imageem2024-10-06/em230602332.png

I'm in!

...yeah, I kinda forgot to say that. For like, the entire duration of the jam.

So yeah, I made a game. It's my first attempt at making basically anything with Godot and I spent about half my time switching between Godot, the documentation and ChatGPT to get something resembling a game but I am very happy with the result.

So, if you want to play a game where you are a swarm of insects destroying local farms while evading birds, give FIELD TRIP a go!

Bonus screenshot! img3.png

Tasty tasty creatures...

What will you choose?

One day left, hope I can make it. Congratulations to everyone who participates in the compo.

PmmjlARk1RY.jpg

Yeet !

That's all I have to say. Just finished this game and as always, this Ludum Dare was a blast ! Can't wait to play other games, the theme was really inspirational.

cover.png

Play Yeet Them all !

Dropping to jam :_)

I set to join this weekend after a long hiatus and decided to go with Bichis rescue, a game inspired by Pang (at its current state it's basically a clone, and the "tiny creatures" are bigger than the player character :face_palm:).

I intended to submit for the compo, but I'm still missing levels, UI and a lot of polish, sooo I'll have to skip and join the jam tomorrow. Still pretty happy with the results.

Good luck to everyone! Here's a gif of the work so far: ld56-gfx.gif

It's done!

Oh my that took a lot more effort that I wanted. But the "game" is done, go play it or something. I need some sleep and them I'm gonna play your games!

My progress

First time soloing a game jam. And the AI is the biggest mess ever created, but it's mine :D

Screenshot (1006).png

And I'm done

MicroWars_ld.png

I'm tired and my back aches, but I've finished it. Didn't get everything in that I wanted, but I'm pretty happy with what I did get done.

Good luck everyone :8ball:

It was very intense and awesome!!!

The strangest phrase I've heard from myself today: 'Oh no! I spilled coffee on the assets!!!' Screenshot_3.jpg

submitted - phew

ran into a last minute web game bug where keyboard keys are working fine locally but aren't recognized on itch.io. :scream:

if someone has the same problem: injecting <script>window.onclick = function () { window.focus(); }</script> into the index.html worked for me :relieved:

Good luck, everybody!!!

splash_640x512.png

Here's my daft little game. Maybe I should have contributed to the jam instead of the compo? Anyways, had a nice weekend thinking about and creating this. Cheers!

It's Done!

Finished my own game for LD56! Excited to see everyone else's!title.jpg

Hidden Hierarchy

So excited!!

First time participating in Ludum Dare. I would be very happy to know that people are actually playing the game. So please take the time (even if it takes some preparation time). It‘s worth it!

Tiny Creatures Cards.JPG

Tiny Creatures_Division of the playing field.JPG

Unfortunately I cannot post any links. Please go to my account, you will find the game there.

Finished!

I didnt get my 48 hours this time, only got a big slice of sunday. But i managed to get something playable. It's ugly, working bad, not fun and just plain weird. But it is a game and it was very fun to make it.

Good night everyone, good job.

Day 2 progress report.

It's the end of day 2. Congratulations to all the compo entrants. We've made a lot of progress today. The placing and attacking phase are all integrated and the full gameplay loop and win and loss conditions are done. We have multiple enemy types with different ranges and abilities and the boilerplate for special attacks. @Pegasys has been working hard on getting all the units code ready so the special attacks should just slot in. ezgif.com-video-to-gif-converter.gif

We now have animations for all our characters and they are so adorable. They just need to be hooked up. mothemjump.gif worker/embeeemjump.gif spider/emjump.gif queenembee/emjump.gif beetle_jump.gif

The end is in sight and I think we can make it. oh-yeah-its-all-coming-together.gif

Yeah, no way in H*ck... (Tiny Daemons)

I was aiming for Compo this time around, but I waaay overscoped it the moment I decided on "AI" and "Tweakable behaviors" at the same time.

Surprised I could make something look like non-descript FPS shooter characters from a 90s game, though. Using the most basic shapes!

It makes for a sandbox, but I really think thing this needs improvement before submitting. They can't even do damage to one another!

Still aiming for Jam, though... maybe I'll throw in external assets now that I'm less confined. Wish me luck!

This is fine... Doomed.gif

Ephyra Progress - Morning Day 3

Morning down under for last day of the Jam. We got backgrounds in for Level 1 and other new art in yesterday and generally improved things a bunch. Lots left to do today including finish spikes, add fish, tons to do on levels and final polish. Very happy with how things are shaping up.

Ephyra-Day2.png

Should I fix her... Or leave

last hour rush added blocking bugs, but may be I should just leavy this beauty as isbug.png

Mite Blaster coming soon

We’re continuing our work on Mite Blaster together with @jscommander and @marleeeeeey. I focused on creating Game Branding Art. @jscommander busy with coding and game art. Below are prototypes for the title and backstory. Feel free to leave your feedback and design suggestions. The MVP is already available for online play at this link: https://jscommander.itch.io/ld-56 .

Blood, Sweat, and Tears

Alas the Compo has ended and I made a pretty simple game, my hope is that it works (I never tested the non-speedrun route) BUT! After 30-60 minutes of pure pain I did get a web version up and running SO... now people can just play it without downloading so yay! (I lowkey wouldn't download my game if I was not me LOL)

My game is ready!

SHIP IT!

My game is about trying to remember your friends names, and not end up looking like a big jerk, also the friends are really really small, and sometimes give you diseases.scs.png

Finally Out !

First time participating to the Ludum Dare, and first ever 2D game ! It was a bit of a struggle to export, and I couldn't figure out how to embed the game on this website so it's only playable on itch, but was such a fun experience

An Essential Mechanic

For any game about bees, it's very important there is a dedicated Waggle Dance button WaggleDance.gif

Have a good mood

Good mood to all, I'm participating for the first time. I decided to start with COMPO. Good luck to everyone!

Kill your (tiny creatures) darlings

The Compo is over, and I don't have the game I initially planned.

My first day I had a really fun time learning new things in Godot and feeling like I made some good progress. However, I could see a scope creep on the horizon. Sure enough waking up on the second day and playing the demo I knew I had to change the game plan. So I killed it. :skull:

The demo included some basic platforming and an evolution mechanic. If you're interested you can play it on itch.io!

My actual entry: Apple Snake

The game idea I went with was something that was on my initial drawing board. The only reason I didn't go with it from the start was that I thought it too simple. In a 48 hour time frame there is however nothing that is too simple, I have now learned. :snake: :apple:

Today isn't going well. Here are a couple of new Sterkets.

I'm going to have to go for the Jam rather than Compo, even though I did all the assets and code alone. I have been severely distracted, but I did manage to finish a menu and sprites.

Squeaclops.png

This creature is called Squeaclops. It has only one eye, which many people find creepy, but the eye is very expressive, which some people find cute. Violent battles have been fought over them.

Slogulo.png

This guy is called Slogulo. Centuries ago, a natural disaster severely reduced the amount of food they had available, so they had to evolve away any unneeded body parts, including their limbs. In the present day, they desperately eat all the food they come across in hope that i will evolve them back to their former glory.

Day 2 End

So far, so good. Managed to complete the entire economy and defense system along with invasions and enemy AI, deer AI and some other qol features. All I have to do tomorrow are the menus, levels and additional polish (sfx) and qol features that are necessary for this kind of project.

Screenshot_2014.png

Phew...

That was intense!

I barely made it and didn't have time to implement any proper win/lose -states.

But at least you can:

  • whack tiny creatures
  • snack tiny creatures
  • put them in a glass of water to.. ..uhh.. ..germinate
  • fiddle around with a reel-to-reel audio-tape machine
