Ludum Dare 56 October 4–7, 2024

Looking for feedback!

Hi there , peeps. @beadyeyes and I made a silly little game about a child's quest to become the best fish battler that ever lived! This was my first time in Unreal as well as my first time doing anything art or design-related for a game jam! it was a lot of fun and We would really love to hear your feedback and for you guys to check it out if you guys have some time! some sketches, character development of "Mioritza"

While playing the game "Mioritza" you might've questioning: why all three characters have the same design, but different ahoge?

Well, it is quite simple: (CW: SPOILERS TO THE NOVEL)

The plot takes place against the backdrop of a conflict between two brothers and a hero named M. His internal struggle between choosing to accept fate or fight to the end forces him to question himself. (question mark on top)

But the brothers are different: one of them persistently proposes the idea of getting rid of his brother and taking away the wonderful farm, and the other simply agrees and accepts the idea, without questioning.

Also here are a couple of sketches and my favorite background called "mom's house"

We will be very glad if you tell us your impressions of our game and also feel free to wait for questions about the plot if they ariseа.jpgа2.jpgмама.png

Ducks Need Saving

Ducklings get separated from their parents every day. Good thing those tiny creatures have you to guide them to safety.

Last few LD I've been too busy to participate. This time was similar but I really wanted to submit a game. Here is Duck Safety Patrol, a game made in a few hours about saving ducklings.

Sick of the Peanut Gallery? Check out the Flea Circus!

Our team of 4 put together a special lil experience where YOU, yes YOU, can be the performer(s) of a flea circus!

Work with your ringleader, Flea T Barnum, to build up a circus that really highlights your unbe-flea-vable talents as performers and then put on a show! Each day you'll add a new performer, and your previous performers will execute the routine you've already rehearsed.

Screenshot 2024-10-08 at 3.14.08 PM.png

After putting together a fun and chaotic 6 days of performances you get to kick back and watch the show, knowing this type of fame couldn't be flea-ting.

Shrine - The Birth of a Forest God

Hi all, I didn't have a lot of time over the weekend so I made a really tiny incremental game that will take you 10mins to complete. I usually focus on programming during jams and don't get to make art much so my main goal was to experiment with pixel art. I'm really proud of how it turned out!

If you're interested in trying it out:

I'm looking forward to trying out a bunch of games over the next while!

Tired of the peanut gallery? Check out the Flea Circus!

Our team of 4 put got a special show to come to town, the Flea Circus!

Work with your ringleader, Flea T Barnum, to build up a performance stage that really highlights your unbe-flea-vable skills! You'll play as the circus performer(s), balancing, spinning, hopping, and more across the stage for the show of a lifetime.

Each day you'll perform a new routine, and each flea from the previous days will perform the routine you've already taught them! They can interact in fun an rewarding ways, earn points to upgrade your circus, and by the end of the week you'll have quite the show to kick back and watch. Screenshot 2024-10-08 at 3.14.08 PM.png

Show us your best performance, we've all got tickets to the show! FleaTBarnum.png

Welcome to The Flea Circus!

We'd love to see what you think of our Jam entry, Flea Circus!

You play as fleas and every round you get to be one of the fleas and your inputs get recorded for the subsequent rounds so the fleas can "remember" their routine and by the end you should have a fully functioning flea ciricus that you designed!

2341 lines later and the engine is finally done!

Now it's time to make levels! (I have 2 so far.)

2024-10-08-2243-finally-a-game.png

And yes I did have to prevent a bug where sitting on a button being used to hold open a door could result in one jumping past the end of the door.

There are a few things still missing but they can be done later:

  • You cannot delete levels from a level set yet.
  • Multiple level sets are not supported. This is a matter of implementing the Windows 3.1 file open/save-as dialog boxes.

But anyway, time to actually make the levels!

Keep It Up Kitty! Music, Gameplay, My love for Ludum Dare 56

Since I've received positive feedback on the music in Keep It Up Kitty! I figured I'd give a little background on my process.

I did most of the songwriting and production on my OP-1. I exported the individual tracks to Ableton for mixing/mastering, added in a riser and some effects, and put it thru a mastering loop. Very simple but I think good enough for a few hours work. I like the OP-1 because I can get an idea together quickly, it has nice cute sounds that fit the vibe i wanted, and the audio quality fits the lo-fi aesthetic well. 2024-10-08 15em53/em36-kitty cuddles_ [kitty cuddles] - Ableton Live 11 Suite.png Having nice gear and experience playing instruments for >20 years is a big advantage in an event like this, lol.

I've had such a great experience with this October's compo/jam. I felt like I had the best grasp I've ever had on the theme and my vision, and being (recently) unemployed, I had the time to fully devote to executing my best. I've also been really impressed and had fun playing everyone's entries!

As a bonus, please enjoy this gameplay clip of the craziness that begins once you make it a bit further into the game :) Keep It Up Kitty Gameplay (1).gif

BeetleBall: Online Multiplayer Dung Beetle Soccer!

Making an online multiplayer game in 3 days was pretty hard, but we managed to get something that I think works pretty well.

The Art of Apparatus - Post Mortem

splashemart/emv2.png

I’m a professional software engineer, but this time I joined as an artist. I believe my teammate @evindor expected to split coding responsibilities, but it was so heavy on art, that I only touched Godot for the last four hours of the event to animate the Apparatus.

It’s my first game jam ever and I would like to share how it went for me, my process and some early concepts. If you didn't play it yet, go give it a try https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/56/apparatus

@evindor had an idea for a programming puzzle game inspired by an esoteric language called Befunge. As a prep work for the jam we had a few sittings to ideate on what we can build around it. An idea of an auto-batler came to mind. Funny enough, neither puzzle nor auto-battler games is my cup of tea. But I was curious to make something different from the genres I usually play (recent crush Nine Sols). The initial idea was to make something like Backpack Hero so here is what I envisioned:

SpellStack v1.png

But when “Tiny Creatures” was announced as the theme, @evindor convinced me that tower defense or horde survivors is gonna fit just right. I trust both my and his gut feeling, so after a short struggle I agreed and we started cooking. I’m glad I did, because making a few distinct creatures instead of drawing a bunch of detailed characters is so much less time. They were done within an hour. I wish I had more time to paint them a bit more and make a simple animation.

apparatus_creatues@0.5x.png

We made sure to have 8 hours of sleep and the rest of the time we were busy making the game. On the first day I finished the design of the machine and creatures. I was happy that everything clicked and concept art was done without any hiccups. But on the second day the real crunch started, because drawing that machine, all its pieces with a crisp lineart thinking of tilesets and animation is a work that I underestimated. On the last day I spent half a day finishing up missing details (e.g. icons) and preparing a tileset. Then half a day, head to head to the deadline, I spent on importing and animating machine UI elements.

I’m glad how much we did in just three days and how great the game turned out. It’s flattering to hear positive feedback from hardcore gamers who like challenges. Thanks to @evindor for inviting me to join him and to you guy for playing it.

It’s time to take care of life matters and have a good rest. But we’re planning to tune a few things and publish it on Itch, so stay tuned https://x.com/erasemenot_

In the meantime it's playable in the browser here https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/56/apparatus

Another look behind the scenes

thumbnail.png

Before working on the final look of my visual novel, I focused on getting my choice system to work. Which means there was a time during the making of my game where I just threw all my concept art as placeholders into the game.

This is what it looked like:

ezgif.com-optimize(3).gif

Notice how I wanted there to be some kind of animation although I knew that this was just ... concept art. Priorities, am I right? ^^°

Now, this is what it looks like in the final version:

Quite the improvement, wouldn't you agree? The vibes are just different.
