Day 1
Progress so far: Only gimmicks, no content at all currently... Good luck everyone!

Progress so far: Only gimmicks, no content at all currently... Good luck everyone!

let's create your tech beats!!!

I now have a workflow where I can draw the overworld tilemap in aseprite and load it into the game
I wonder how I will populate the world with characters and items though

https://youtu.be/DtoNEyCGNcs
I am inspired by this: the Ventilastation, a low tech circular display based on a fan, a LED strip, and a microcontroller, designed for games.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoFkcZeGjOQ
Not planning (yet) to actually run a game on it or on its emulator, but the concept is interesting. I am curious what games would lend themselves well for a circular display with circular gameplay. So I projected my "linear" game engine output onto a circle and got a first game prototype running.
The top part of the screen is stretched horizontally, the bottom pixel row is compressed into a single pixel. Gameplay could work best somewhere in the middle. Scrolling up and down would translate to moving inwards and outwards of the circle. To make the gameplay truly circular, the game would need to wrap around seamlessly left-to-right.
Normal game:

Projected onto circle:

With a simple scanline effect to make it look more like a ventilastation:

I was inspired by the aesthetic of The Legend of Zelda, with its ancient ruins and broken machines, but the game is slowly turning into Minecraft...

Still need to make game, been spending way too much time on making things look pretty...
https://youtu.be/CTQTAIL_uBw
Still haven't thought of good name yet, but need to focus on actually working on the game bit! (Never done a YouTube embed before, so hope this works!)
Better be wary if you're tinkering with old gadgets that include degraded and/or questionable components! :zap: :warning: :wrench:

Spent a lot of time getting familiar with pro builder and making the player character.
Most of the day spent on trying to figure out how to make a scene dark but not Game of Thrones last season dark. Not sure if I figured it out but it's better then it was a few hours ago.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqQEvsIyyj0
Good luck everyone for tommorow!
Ok... I started 2 hours ago and... I have this!

Will I be able to finish my game before the compo deadline? I hope so...

Half the graphics aren't ready, the music is just sketches, and there's still no final boss. But hey, at least we can walk around the dungeon using a phone!

We have a working prototype that is playable and calculates scores already.
Tomorrow we'll add little tutorial screens, sound effects, dialogs, scoring and some extra game modes. We've never been this far at the end of the first day yet. We're pretty relaxed now. Today was a good day :-)
Whew! Almost all the main mechanics are in the game now. Tomorrow I just need to make the levels, draw a looot of sprites, make some audio, and play with it. I hope I'll have enough time and everything and not scramble at the end.
Who am I kidding... of course I'll scramble like crazy towards the end. See you tomorrow!

I've been checking out some of the posts, and I love how differently everyone is interpreting the theme!
It's really cool to see how many different directions people are taking with Old Tech. I'm really looking forward to seeing all the different games that come out of this jam!
Good luck everyone, and have fun! :)
My idea for this theme was a metroidvania made out of interconnected retro games. Day 1 is over, and it's kinda working? We've got asteroids:

Rogue:

Mario:

Zelda:

And some sort of JRPG:

This may have been a little ambitious for LD, especially since I've got other stuff I gotta do tomorrow. Honestly no idea if I'm gonna be able to land this or not. We'll see!
... are better than Trolls.

What's older tech than earthenware, amirite?

Old tech. What counts as old tech these days? 2006. 20 years ago. Before the iPhone. Before social media took over. The peak of the Frutiger Aero era. Having grown up during this era it has a special place in my heart.
So our idea is a mystery puzzle game set in a 2000s corporate office. You're trying to investigate corporate crimes. Of a similar vein to the Enron scandals of the early 2000s.

We thought we'd go with a different aesthetic to the usual noir tone of typical detective style mystery games and go with something more fitting for this era of positivity for the future.
We've created the core apps for your PDA and several interactable in the scene such as a computer terminal running the most stable enterprise ready operating system of Windows Vista and motivational posters. We're using best cybersecurity practices for the time, such as scribbling passwords on post-it notes.
Our focus now is on adding the remaining puzzles to figure out the mystery and replacing the placeholder art.

For the music we're leaning into the Frutiger Aero vibe also taking inspiration from consoles like the Wii and @theoconfidor has made some great tracks along these lines already.
Good luck everyone, 2 day to go!
Took forever to come up with something, but I think I've got an idea to work with for now.

I know it's not THAT old as far as tech goes, but still it's been like 20 years since I had a flip phone so I'm rolling with it...
Almost exactly half the compo time has passed. Here's where I am at the moment.

I decided to try and make a card game. It might have been too ambitious, We'll see!

Not sure how well it fits the theme, but I'm happy with the visuals.
...and not a whole lot to show for it. I managed to get as far as generating a grid with no matches, and then detecting matches when you swap two files, but now I'm having trouble clearing the files from the grid and getting the remaining files to cascade downwards, and I can't for the life of me figure out what I'm doing wrong with either of those things. The files are cascading downwards, but they're also randomly erasing a few and then crashing the game for some reason:

So yeah, it's been 24 hours of banging my head against my desk, and I can already foresee it being 48 more hours of banging my head against my desk. I tell you what, when I'm finished with this, I never want to see another fucking two-dimensional Lua array ever again.
By the end of the day, My team and I managed to put together a somewhat functional gameplay loop and flesh out the characters. 🎮
There's still a lot of work ahead, but the first step is done!!

Progress has been slow and I've been going back and forth between different ideas, but I think I've decided to do a Game&Watch style roguelike in the end.

Can you guess the theme yet?
After watching the Primagen a while back talking about how he uses AI to playtest his game. I thought that would be cool to do for a game jam (since you generally don't have enough time to play test usually)
So I set claude upon the task of writing a harness that could interact with the game through JSON input/output and effectively kept the entire game loop as headless code only so it could effectively play the game.
This is incredibly powerful! The game has now been play tested 100's approaching 1000's of times! (thank the heavens for local LLM) You can get stats about anything across dozens or hundreds of play cycles if you structure the data correctly. Here is an example of some of those stats!

Phew, never thought I'd go to bed early on a weekend, but I'm ex-haust-ed.
For starters, I've got my character in and even made a character designer where you can change a few things about her. Also added the two biggest puzzles in the game, I'm so excited to bring it all together tomorrow but it's going to be the more code-heavy stuff as I try to make some minigames (though I have a backup plan in case I can't do them in time.) I think tomorrow my main goal is going to be focusing on finishing the main story, and then going back to add the minigames if I have the time and capacity.

Very excited to show this one when it's submission time, I think it might be the best thing I've made yet! I don't really do much game stuff outside of Ludum Dare so to have come this far in a single day, as well all the stuff I retained from my previous attempts at game dev, not to mention how quickly I was able to troubleshoot bugs has really boosted my confidence. Even if I don't finish it by Monday I'll be happy with what I got done.
I'm calling day one done. I had my daughters Birthday party today, and had to jam around that, so I've kept the scope of my game really low. Pleased with how it's turned out so far. Still lots to do tomorrow though. :8ball:

Ok, I decided to switch away from the abacus. Waiting for the clay to dry every time I wanted to compile was just too slow. So I've moved onto newer and improved tech—that's right! Pen and paper! Sadly, I forgot about syntax highlighting, so I guess I'll have to do that when I refactor.

Its great that we all dared to ludum this weekend gang! you're all doing great!!

Full playable scene at:

The only way my game's audio is going to be where I want it is if I foley art it.
I'm this 🤏 close to just going to my local thrift store and buying a VCR
...It's the curse of the game designer. I have completed ONE of my four mechanics I wanted to make for this game. Gonna call it an evening here and then get up tomorrow. I have a working till/order system and stock check.
I had such high hopes for the other mechanics but I think I might need to scope back... :/
Will see how I feel tomorrow!
WIP shot here
Goodnight all!
Have added the first 3 challenges. Gonna try wrap up tomorrow before midday.
Is it too hard, or too easy? Are the controls easy to follow?
Move - Arrows or WASD
R to Reset Level
Arrow Down ( S ) to view level below / crouch ( needed for some obstacles )
Wall jump if next to wall and already jumping.
Avoid ancient saws / spikes
Use obelisks to save progress / checkpoint

Yep it's a ancient aliens / history channel take on egypt as the theme lol
This is the first game jam I've participated in solo. Before this, I've only taken part in game jams as part of a team, so I'm not sure I'll have enough time to finish all the mechanics and sound effects.
I spent the entire day creating assets and animations. It's a shame that the theme "Elephant in the Room" didn't win, but I'll be adding one to my game anyway! He'll help us brew some strong moonshine.
Well, I’ve been programming for 24 hours now, but I haven’t really gotten much done—I’ve only just started working on the game’s art. The trickiest part hasn’t been the programming, but rather creating the pixel art. You see, the way my game works is that with every new screen, the console changes. For instance, the first screen features the style and physics of an Atari 2600, the next one follows a Nintendo style, and the final one uses a Game Boy style. While the programming itself wasn’t too difficult, creating all the pixel art is going to be a tedious task. Here’s a screenshot of the game.

My team decided to reuse cat mascot from our previous game for Ludum or create new cat in the same style. And I wanna share this cutie!
:cat:

I assume I will need to port all this grass towards multi-mesh instancing or performance will be horrible for this... well. Hopefully I'll have some time for that. ^^'
I was out most of the day doing unrelated things so haven't made much progress overall so far today. Probably going to try to do the jam and get a semi-playable game out by then.
I do have concepts for what the actual gameplay could be (maybe a puzzle platformer sort of thing), and have implemented some janky box-pushing physics.

But then I realized I still have lots of physics glitches, like how the collisions only check for one box so you can exploit that to get inside another box. Grrr....

I am so bad at writing physics engines, it is actually kind of impressive. To be fair, I actually stole this physics engine from Macroquad (their macroquad-platformer package) but ported it to PonieScript so that I could make changes. Still, it isn't quite working.

A NES implementation of a Nokia 2280 Snake game rip-off, is this "Old Tech" enough?
So we finished most of the character movement and story boarding. The first stage is also mostly ready.

I used to have roommates that would never refill the Brita. Don’t be those guys.

Very happy with this so far. Developing very fast!!
These will be in the game but whats their purpose?

The experience I gained over the last 3 ludum dares is really paying off! This time I've actually got my gameplay loop playable so much faster, I'm going to actually have time to make the game fun maybe!!
I finally checked everything off my list for today!
The game mechanic is done, which was my goal for day one. Tomorrow I'll spend some time making it look and sound good. I'm going to get some rest. Good night, everyone! Rest well!

It’s shaping up to be something fun and genuinely interesting. Hopefully, it’ll win your hearts too <3
Have a productive day, everyone. I’m off to bed... zzz

oh, wait, it is already the last day of the event... time flies and I need to go sleep
I made a Game Boy shader shared by the game web app and the pattern editor web app.

I'm making a game where you create copy art with a photocopier and share it with others via fax. I was born in 2004, so I haven't experienced much old tech, but I do remember photocopying my butt on one of those old-school glass-bed copiers as a kid ^ ^ 17f78ec8307577b0162d1f34d395f25f.png

At least it's something new for me!

I attempted to submit something a couple LDs ago but I've been trying to learn 3d and so far it's been way too much, I might manage to make it this time around though, I'm a little more used to all the weird quirks of 3d handling in game engines now.
My tools: Godot, Blender, GIMP, jfxr, LMMS, and VSCodium
how will i tie this all together..?
quests....?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mie69p6A3WE
Now with more secrets!

The window system and the game itself aren't ready yet. I might be spending too much time on the environment, but since the game mechanics are very simple, I want to focus on the environment instead.
The mechanics became a little weird, but hopefully will remain understandable to normal humans.
(Also, the background only looks like this because of the GIF.)

Title screen done.

Oh hellz yes, I just wrote my first chiptunes banger ever. Puttin this baby into my game now and see how it feels.

Day two, here we go! I had terrible sleep at night, my mind was constantly buzzing with ideas and TODOs for the game. Anyway, let's get back to the game. Only have today to finish it and I think I'm in a good place to actually do so.

I received valuable feebdack on this (original post is updated): https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/60/$432774/i-made-a-simple-tool-for-sharing-how-you-used-ai-if-you-did
Now it is much more professional, neutral and non-derogative / respectful to all sides hopefully. Hope it makes sense now.
Thank you all.

Here is the new repo: https://github.com/AweSkyBear/AI-usage-declaration-banner

should i add bananaz
Spent some time yesterday verifying the current way of implementing the plot, and it turned out pretty well!
Today I'll make the storyline and content a bit more in-depth :)

Looking forward to more different perspectives from the "old tech" after finishing the race!

Art, code, and jokes. Done(-ish)!
I've actually got time to play around with composing music, polishing the gameplay and adjusting settings, quality of life features, and whatnots this time.
https://youtu.be/zYHj0y-lQKM https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/60/$433928
I can feel something actually fun starting to develop here, and I'm kind of digging the construction paper special effects. But now it's time for some sleep!

Basically, the end of my 2nd day working on this. I've completed the tutorial, shown in the video below. I was hoping to have that done like 12 hours ago... 😅 Been a bit ambitious, as usual, but happy with what I've put together, it's well polished. All made by hand in C# with Godot, sound through BFXR.
https://youtu.be/XvJjCGevxq0
I just haven't actually worked on the game portion 🤣, but I have all the pieces I need now via the work done on the tutorial. The main game is basically going to be some narrative interspaced with decoding Morse Code messages, so I'm hoping in the morning I can copy the tutorial code over and put a little bit of the start of the game together. I do have the first two messages for decoding together. (Not sure if there'll be more... that'd be a win.)
I'm only going to have a few hours left in the morning before some other commitments but going to try and get a few hours of sleep. Will see how things go in the morning!
I was drained by my main gamedev and other projects that occupy me daily, and any sort of game engine that I would open would fill me with disguist toward the amount of work that I would had to commit to. But then I realised that posting the "I'm giving up" message would be an even bigger effort, so I crawled back to Unity and 12 hours later I have an actual game well underway. Update: I apologize for the amount of "would" in this paragraph.
I have decided to use free assets made by others almost entirely in order to regain some motivation, this helped. As for coding there is not a crazy amount of it to do for this game, it is all mostly setting up Unity stuff. Things are looking up.

The Wii is almost 20 years old - so it is old tech!

Anyone else feel old now?

Hey Ludum Dare!
Today's goal: finish up the gameplay mechanics and UI so I can spend tomorrow polishing things up and adding some extra art.
Good luck with your games, everyone!
i got a stupid idea. i'm already doing a game with a team, but what if I make another game by myself? is this stupid? maybe...
am i stupid tho?? no way jose i'm the best to ever do it B) 2 (two) games coming soon... #GOATSTATUS

Elephants never forget about old tech! :elephant:

I want to download a clicky keyboard sound effect (like the huge keys in older computers), but I'm not sure if they are allowed.

— Every game jam has been a challenge that taught me something new. Whether I succeed at LD60 or not, at least I know I can create 24 unique enemies on a 16×16 pixel grid using a palette of just 8 colors.
— Sir, this is a job interview for a janitor position.

The closer you get to death, the more the images starts to shake
To be honest, feeling rather uninspired and somewhat demotivated by the theme so I spent yesterday mostly procrastinating.
Still, I really want to get something out so I present my clone of many connect-games!
My theme interpretation: New tech is wireless so cables are old.

I'm actually really proud of this plug-beast now! The textures are sloppy, but you can't tell in the dark lol!

I'm especially stoked on the bitey plug behavior (also these guys have separate ai (and health bars) from the main beast), they feel like little techy grabboid tongues!

This is my first game jam, and the project was built with Twine; I hope you enjoy it soon!!!!!
This badge is for those games which contain an elephant in solidarity with our lost theme. Please put it on your ludum dare page and your itch page for your game if it contains an elephant.

The song is over
My funeral song...
The rifle is a lot heavier than I thought
I'm shaking
I'm trying to hold it still
Tastes like iron...
I don't want to die.
