LD25 December 14–17, 2012

Uh oh…

Bad news:

Yep, that’s right. It turns out I don’t really know my libraries well enough at all. It should work, but it doesn’t. I should’ve known this would happen, especially considering that I’ve only known these libraries for less than a month.

I’m not entirely sure if I should keep going or switch to Java2D (really don’t want to do that)  or even just quit.  Maybe an idea will come to me later in the day, but for now, I’m probably out.

Hi again!

Third Ludum Dare for me and it started quite nicely. I have a great idea and everything is going smoothly so far.

Here is a hint:

The most useless 10 hours

I was celebrating my B-day yesterday and ended up coming back home at 3am when the LD theme was announced. I had a quick look at the theme before going to bed and saw : “you are the villain”… Out of all of the themes this was the one I didn’t really “brainstorm” a lot on. So here I am, I just woke up 10 hours in the compo, And still haven’t done anything.

I’m not abandoning just yet!

So wish me luch…

Dock is Daring!

ld25-01

Hello Ludumites! I am in, and it is on.

I have come up with an idea about a witch, I just hope I don’t let the scope get out of control. I’ll probably be doing 3D for this, which I haven’t done in a while.

Time to start making the game, I guess! :)

Yes. Yes yes yes. I approve! \:D/

A few hours in…

Well, I’m now a few hours in (the competition started at 2am here or something), and I’ve got absolutely no screenshots to upload. I’ll hopefully upload something later, but that depends on whether OpenGL will work for me or not… Hope everyone’s doing well, anyways, see you later (-:)>*

Progress #1

I figured I should post something before I sleep, so…

This is my first Ludum Dare, and after a long time of coming up with ideas that were way too complicated I settled on making a game where you play as an evil scientist, who must defend his doomsday device from those who would wish to stop him, until it has finished charging allowing him to TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!! Devious traps and  evil demons (and goats!) will help to ensure your success!

So far I’ve mostly worked on getting a simple engine running, and then spent far too long with my terrible pixel art skills.

Some sort of evil scientist lair

Some sort of evil scientist lair

Half participating

I’m making a game where you go through several platforming levels to find parts to build up a rocket to be launched into the sun and decimating it. There is a kiddy storyline to go with it but I’m not going to write about it here.

I probably won’t meet any of the deadlines because I have specific ideas which contain too much work to be done in a single weekend and I’m not wiling to cut most of it.

So why am I doing it? It’s because I’ve been thinking of doing a game like this for a long time but I haven’t got started on it yet. So maybe this game jam would provide me an excuse to start developing this game.

Test Subject Gamma

Greetings once more my fellow… aha… scientists.

Your goals are as follows:

  • Money
  • Research
  • Experimentation

Excel at these goals and you will become a masterful supervisor.

The test subjects are waiting for you.

I’m up!

Up and running!

…oh boy, this theme is going to be painful.
I’ve got an idea already, but the engine is going to be hard to make, so… yeah.

Let’s do this!!!1

A Laght (light AND late :D) Breakfast

Here in the UK I’ve slept an hour over my alarm, took a shower, set up my VS projct, compiled some test code, put some laundry in the spinny white thing in the kitchen, and sat down with some berry-flavoured water, some brioche and lemon curd.

I brainstormed a lot of ideas last night but none of them seem to be gameplay oriented, so I’m still not sure what to make. I’m not saying it’s a bad theme, but it only seems to inspire stories and scenarios in me, not interesting mechanics.

Hey ho, here’s the first of my tradition LD food pics. Nothin’ special.

Day 1 – morning

I’m in.Beware extra goat

I’m going to use my own Allegro wrapper with Go. The main problem is providing the dependencies. At the moment the best I can do for Linux is say that Allegro 5.0.8 has to be installed. Sorry everyone who doesn’t like installing extra packages.

I can’t compile for Mac, so Mac users will have to put up with not having binaries.

Good luck to everyone!

Here we go again…

After about an hour of programming and drawing with gimp, first results:

Maze generation complete.

Yeah, but with different kind of gameplay mechanics, a little.

First night wrap up

Good morning! Brad here. Nathan and I are just finishing up for the night, and are happy with our initial work. When I say work, I mostly mean planning. We’ve planned the ALL the things!

We are very eager to do more development, but fatigue has gotten the upper hand, and we’re giving in for a few hours. We both have a very solid idea of where everything is going, and all of the work involved. I’m confident that we can proceed full tilt after some well needed rest.

We have been faithful in our streaming efforts, though almost nothing except status and planning updates have been displayed on the screen. BORING! Tomorrow (er.. today?) will be way better, I promise. http://www.twitch.tv/spotlightcoding

Overall, we’re satisfied with our first game jam progress. Here’s a taste!

Our game involves an overly-ambitious thief named Rob:

OH YEAH! Earlier I took some battle station pics, but was too into some planning with Nathan to share. Here’s my baby:

Loving what I’ve been seeing from everyone so far! See you in a few hours. 😉

Computer Crashes Have Put Me Behind + First Screenshot!

As my first session draws to a close, I’m more frustrated than ever. 8 crashes thus far and I don’t know what the problem is. And it’s not my game, it’s my computer. Wonderful. I’m already way behind, but what else is new? I guess I’ll just work on getting this into a VERY VERY VERY simplified state, then I guess I’ll call it quits. No way I can do what I wanted with all of these interruptions. Just not enough time. Here’s my first screenshot. I was hoping to have enemies implemented already, but so far I just have tiles and a movable main character with animations.

Progress with the villains

I watched the announcement of the theme and then spent the first few hours sleeping, because in UTC+2 it was quite early.

Next, ideas. I initially read the themes in the final voting, and had some small ideas for some of them, but somehow really ignored the Villain theme. So when I started thinking I had  trouble coming up with truly good ideas that I liked. Finally came up with two candidates, and settled on my current one (which I won’t reveal yet). Decided to go with tiles and began creating a tile engine in javascript and created some images, animations and sounds. I can now draw the playing field, and I have some creatures. Like this cow.

BHP Cow

No, the cow is not the villain. I was surprised how well I got started with drawing my own tiles and characters, and had fun creating them. Now will have to work on some game concepts, because the initial idea seems maybe too simple. And perhaps not villainous enough.

may not be the best idea, but I guess going to be fun and involves FIRE

Java JFrame border bug

Hello! I came up with an idea, hope I’ll be able to do all this ^^

I’m making a game in Java, and since Java 7 I have the following problem:

Whenever I want to pack my JFrame after creating and filling it, it leaves a white “border” on the right and the bottom. The game is 800×600, but Java makes the frames content space a bit wider.

I can workaround this by using a one-time action event with Swings Timer class. But isn’t there a more elegant solution?

private void makeUI() {
ds = new Drawscreen();
window = new JFrame("Goatz! v"+VERSION+" - By AyCe for LD 25");
window.setIconImage(MediaLib.icon);
window.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
window.setResizable(false);
content = window.getContentPane();
content.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(800, 600));
window.pack();
content.add(ds);
window.setLocationRelativeTo(null);
window.setVisible(true);
ds.requestFocusInWindow();
// hackfix for border bug
Timer t = new Timer(1000, new ActionListener() {
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent arg0) {
window.pack();
}
});
t.setRepeats(false);
t.start();
}

I would suggest that you use LWJGL’s Display class, but now probably isn’t really the time to learn a new api 😉

Unfortunatly I don’t have a better sollution for that problem other than Display though, sorry.

im using like this

JFrame frame = new JFrame(“Goat Murderer”);

frame.setResizable(false);

GoatMurderer gm = new GoatMurderer();

frame.add(gm);

frame.pack();

frame.setLocationRelativeTo(null);

frame.setVisible(true);

frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
15. Dec 2012 · 10:19 UTC
Why you need to wait 1s for pack()? you only need to call pack() once, and it should be done right after everything set (content added, properties of frame set).
15. Dec 2012 · 10:33 UTC
Thanks for the answers!

@Caironater: I dont want to use extra libs for java, since its so simple to code games in it anyway ^^

@Joeslayer97: Um.. But how to set the correct resizing then?

@MAT4DOR: And GoatMurderer sets the preferredSize ?

@Drabiter: Yes, I did that. But then it bugs sometimes. So my workaround is to call it after 1 sec, and then it always works.

Yeah man, the GoatMurderer is the Canvas that sets the prefrerredSize.

Ok c’est parti!

Hello fellow L-darers, I’m pretty glad to join in!

We’re spending the week-end with my friend Romain (AnnaGavaldaKedavra) at my place in Paris and are going to (try to) make a game each, cute dishes and cocktails! (Obviously more of the latter).

This is my first LD and hopefully also my first finished game. I would have liked any other theme (this one was definitely my least wanted!), but anyway, let’s play the game!

After a really little sleep (we waited up to 3:00 Am GMT+1 to know the theme) I may have an idea..

Good Luck!

Awake now

I slept 4h30.

We drank a lot of vodka yesterday waiting for the theme, i’m obviously hungover.

But my friends! I got my game IDEA! Plus i have a plan B if that idea is too complicated to make.

Now i just have to do it.

Things to do :

– make a list of what i have to do

-Smoke a cigarette/coffee

Spoiler : the game will be a trippy plateformer.

Good day to you all.

Next post : the list of thing to do.

Status report

Almost 1 pm here in the Netherlands, so I thought it’d be a nice idea to post a status update.

As this is my first LD ever, I ditched the last idea so I could code less and add polish to my game. I’ve got the idea, so now it’s just some coding to do and I’m done with the base of my game.

Oh, great, my computer is crashing just as I wanted to upload some art >.<

So it started…

Hey from the newbie amateur of the competition.

Being from Europe I had the joy of waking up at 3.30am just to check the selected theme and sleep a couple hours on it. “You are the Villain” is a great pick, I have to say. I can’t wait to find out what the others did! 😀

Being a big newbie at making games in general, and completely unprepared, I first had to struggle with my coffee while picking up the best tools for the task. I finally settled with JMonkeyEngine, just because I have no idea what I’m doing from a technical point of view.

I spent some time thinking up of a theme and a witty title. I then hurried down a couple scribbled graphics to build the basics. Let’s say I already know I probably won’t finish it in time, but I’ll do my best to finish at least a playable level.

It’s a vertical shoot’em up. I hope I’ll get at least some things right and learn plenty of things this week-end!

Hero Quest Day 1

Hey all. This is my first time participating in an LD. The game I’m working on is a NES-style RPG where you control the monsters in random encounters in an attempt to stop the hero before he gets to your lair! In the vein of Dragon Quest, I have tentatively dubbed it Hero Quest.

I have already made a few mistakes:

  • Spent too much time thinking of a game for the theme.
  • Spent too much time on the placeholder art.
  • Was sort of familiar with the API I decided to use (Love2D), but I had to get up to speed before I started doing anything useful.

In any case, I think I have the boilerplate code down now so I can start working on the gameplay logic tomorrow. For now, I leave you with a screenshot showcasing my terrible programmer art.

I have no idea what to do + my workspace.

Aw, I expected the theme to be The End of the World…  I have no idea how to make a game in current theme, nothing… this will be a hard task.

Anyway, here is my workspace:

4 Hours in

Well I got a basic idea, of what I going to do. Normally I would flesh out my game interactions greater first, but building my map going to help me under stand my territory system.

Yes this is world domination, yes this is rather a small post. Also I decided to enter the Jam rather than the solo project. This lets me use some music and also gives me an extra day to work.

I promise at the end of play today at least, I put a more complete blog post about progress and give anyone who is interested a glimpse at what my game is going to be.

Top of the morning to ya

Morning.

Really excited about this theme. Got ideas but not ready to divulge anything just yet. Had a full english with pancakes for breakfast, so  am pumped for the day ahead. Not sure how I’m going to tackle music or sfx, it’s definitely a weak point of mine. Lets see how much of us make it to the end, good luck guys.

Pancakes!

This is gonna be…interesting

Well I have an idea, but after some hours of work I don’t have anything really worthwhile to show.  The game is going to involve a lot of art assets, but I have stubbornly refused to start working on them until I’ve met my goals on the programming side.  And the game is text-based, so it’s all about sentence parsing and keywords and stuff, so there isn’t even, I don’t know, collision-detection or physics or anything to show off either.

I’ve never made a game like this before and have never thought about good ways to go about it until I heard the theme, so…yeah, just winging it.  It should be easy enough in general, I’m just not sure how I’m going to fare with the deadline.

To get everything in that I want, I predict the abuse of coffee in my near future.

First screenshot!

Yes, it’s my fourth post but first screenshot. Because before the game had no graphics.

First break

Waow, I definitively not pick the easiest of my ideas. I hope it will not prevent me from finishing it.
I struggled few hours with stupid problems (it always a nice idea to try new things during a game jam) but the biggest part of my “villain engine” is now done.

I’m definitively aiming for a final prototype to be working this evening.
VillainEngine Red dots are so mean…

And I’m back in gear!

Just woke up before 10 today! first time that *that’s* happened on a weekend before…..

Anyway, I’ve got a nice little design drawn up now, however I think that it wouldn’t be good to show you it just yet (the plot’s kind of an important aspect, wouldn’t want to ruin that now, would we?) so here’s three rejected ideas:

InitialRejectIdeas

Yeah… They’re kind of small, but don’t worry; the one I chose took up at least half the page!

The real villain! wo ho ho

Hello! This is our first LD and we are making the jam! We are super exited and pumped!

Our idea is basically a runner. And you play as the human in evolution. You start as a monkey, you get to shoot and own stuff. You will evolutionate when you have killed and owned  lot of things and lastly become the modern man you are today.

In the end you will have to make a desicion!

Goodbye!

I have a plan!

So I have fully planed out my game now.

After some lunch. ITS TIME TO GET CODING!

My game takes a some what odd perspective on the theme.

Hope to show you somthing by end of today.

On second thought…

After reading some of the responses to my NSFW and not OK for minors post about a hentai game I posted HERE (NSFW), I’ve decided that no matter how nicely I step around it, I’m going to have an impossible time balancing “Villain” and “Totally-consensual and non-offensive-sex-acts.”

I think even if I take the long-standing-in-hentai-tradition theme of rape out completely and just try to make a funny hentai game, some people will still be offended and I will lose ratings. I don’t want that.

So, I’m taking the community response to heart and shelving this idea for when it isn’t for a contest and when people who don’t like it are less likely to encounter it.

Does this mean I’m out? HELL NO!

I have loads of time before the Jam ends! 😀

good job, glad you made this decision… I don’t want you to feel like rape games are off limits, and I hope you get the chance to make one at some point. I think that GR is a totally amazing example of the genre, and more games like that one should be made. The difference is that it comments on the conditions of rape culture rather than perpetuating it. I am sure that their are other games that handle it well.
15. Dec 2012 · 10:28 UTC
I still don’t understand why you think it’s OK if a tentacle monster does the raping, which WAS my intended direction, for the record, but yeah. I’m done with this.

Milestone 3

http://ludum.atrodo.org/

I’ve done some tweaking and adjusting and now I have an entry area for black and an entry area for white, each one starts in it, and you can get to one from the other.  I love progress.  So recap:

  1. Get the engine setup
  2. Make a black and white boxes for the two characters
  3. Setup terrain generation to have a playing field
  4. Create sprites for sword attacks
  5. Give white a stupid ai
  6. Give white and black health and health bars
  7. Create guns with the physics system
  8. Create a special weapon
  9. Create another
  10. Setup multiple rounds
  11. Give white a better ai
  12. Create more special weapons
  13. Polish

Did you notice the new milestone? Good.

Making Mr. Cylinder – First screen

ld25-1

I am working about 4 hours and there is a first screen with progress :) You can see Mr. Cylinder 😀 and debug console on the left. Finished jumping (i have never made it working before). See you in few hours.

Argh! I overslept!

Living in a timezone where Ludum Dare starts at 3 AM has it’s drawbacks. It’s early enough that you can convince yourself to stay up until the theme is announced, but too late to actually start with something. So I checked the theme, thought ‘Awesome!’, and then got to bed, and slept until just now.

Luckily I already know what to do, as this theme is something I wanted to do for quite some time now1, although titled as “the other side”:

You command not the hero of classic video games, but the enemies. For example, you will be a ghost chasing Pac Man around, commander of the SpaceInvader army or you will be shooting the ballistic missiles in Missile Command. Here’s the twist: You can only advance to the next stage by losing, by letting the good guy win.

It should be relatively easy to get a first playable prototype in a few hours. And then it’s basically just adding stuff.

Anyway, enough time wasted – time to start coding!

1 It feels a little bit like cheating to have a clear plan before the theme is even announced. But then again: I didn’t vote for it. 😉

Stream

Me and my friend are streaming here

Idea: You are the Boss

My game will be a boss rush shmup with a twist; you control the boss and the AI controls the player. Everything except that will look like a normal shmup.

The objective will be to get the player to lose all of its lives trying to beat you. If you lose, the player gets to the next level and you try again with a different boss. If the player beats the final boss, you lose.

I think that might have been confusing, but it’s 7:26AM while I’m writing this and I woke up about 2 minutes ago. :)

Are you ready? Are you ready to make this dream come true?

I’m not sure what I’m looking at here, but it looks hilarious! 😀

First Thoughts

Wow 1 day 14 hours…

I’m 8h behind due to the compo starting midnight at my timezone. None the less i have some first Brainstorming thoughts ready. I like to approach those Themes from various angles and pick an interesting aspect. Philosophical and by terms of motivation i wrote down some loose thoughts.

Beeing evil is nothing natural, all evil beeings were once good. Evil and Good is something everything is based on. There are several Motivations to become evil. Betrayal, missunderstanding, manipulation, overambition, deception, megalomania, power, fraud, jealousy and so on. The classic Game-Villian always has a counterpart. Alot of Games, specially the Molyneux Games, use the Theme to put Players in a moral conflict of beeing good or evil. Beeing evil has a lot of charm – money, power, the freedom to do what i want. Beeing evil means that i don’t have to follow any rules.

What also is interesting in many fictions, that the line between good and evil often is blurred. Sometimes you have to do something evil to be good and vice versa. Theres a whole new Theme opening when you think of good and evil in terms of judgement. Who decides whats good and whats evil?

Etymology wise i’ve found that the word villain itself is pretty interesting. And leads to the conclusion that not beeing Knightly implies that you are doing bad thing. And therefore Farmers are bad. Which i found kinda funny when you think of Farmville…

French villains in the 15th century before going to work, receiving their Lord’s Orders.Villain comes from the Anglo-French and Old French vilain, which itself descends from the Late Latin word villanus, meaning “farmhand”,in the sense of someone who is bound to the soil of a villa, which is to say, worked on the equivalent of a plantation in Late Antiquity, in Italy or Gaul.It referred to a person of less than knightly status and so came to mean a person who was not chivalrous. As a result of many unchivalrous acts, such as treachery or rape, being considered villainous in the modern sense of the word, it became used as a term of abuse and eventually took on its modern meaning.

Then there is one thing or sentence that bugs me since i started thinking about the Theme. Which is a Quote from The Dark Knight: “You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” This Quote opens a lot of options in terms of Game-Design and elegantly describes the dilemma of beeing someone good in the first place and then becoming evil, even tho you never intended to be the villain.

My next step is to get a playable concept, that uses this Quote as a base. I’m mainly focusing on doing something that could work on mobile and therefore i’ll try something simple with a one-button approach. I’m not sure if this is the right way to do it but we’ll see.

LD25 Progress Report #5

First major scrapping of code. The initial movement code was shoddy, at best. The train had pixel-based position, and the terrain was tile-based. Having this inconsistency made it really hard to actually do junctions and turns. Rewriting the track system into a node system, where each exit is a node, and movement is done as a simple linear interpolation between the positions of the two nodes that are connected at one point.

That took longer than expected, around two hours per total. Junctions have also been worked in properly, with the train currently toggling the junctions as it passes through them.

Oh hey! Did you enjoy your present?

Plot with an Enviromental twist

Ok, I’ve decided upon a idea!

In this game you’ll be a lumberjack, who goes out destroying trees. While you go out chopping forests apart, you will find resistance, of course, upon which you can use your lumberjack “equipment” (cough Axes cough cough chainsaw)!!. So far I thought of three levels: against native people, against the governement (police…) and against NGOs (think Greenpeace…). This idea has a “let’s save the environment” side-effect, which cannot be unwelcome.

So, the plan now is to work on the “chop the tree” effect, and then work on the basic side-scrolling platformer stuff.

Chunk of the core mechanic done + Big bug + Not a game yet

screenshot2

I got a good chunk of the core mechanic working and then ran into a bug that requires a significant refactor. The mechanic seems fun enough, but I’m also still trying to figure out how to turn it into an actual game. It’s time for bed so I can let my brain stew it over.

LD25 I’ve got my idea!

After spending the whole morning brainstorming and writing game ideas I’ve decided to go with the following idea:

A strategy/simulation game with very limited interactions. You have been elected as the new king of a small kingdom and must bring prosperity by making the right decisions. The goal of the game is very simple, reach a population of X (to be announced). The grand issue tough is that no matter what you chose someone in your kingdom will always be unhappy and the bigger your population gets the more difficult it’ll be to keep your citizens happy. Eventually you’ll have to sacrifice your good will in order to reach your goal and win the game. But at what cost? because in the end you’ll have turned into the villain in the eyes of your citizens.

This idea is largely inspired by William Shakespear’s Macbeth.

Here’s the mind map I did while brainstorming:

LD25 Brainstorm

And here are my other ideas I didn’t choose:

————————————————————
You’re the evil cube wishing to do XXX upon YYY in order to reach ZZZ.
————————————————————
Hero has to reach X, you have to prevent him from doing so by using all kinds of obstacles.
————————————————————
You have to fight the hero who is an increadibely bad and incompetente fighter but you have to let him win in order to receive the applaus from the audience.
————————————————————
You are a mountain the hero tries to conquer. Prevent him from reaching the top and getting salvation.
—————————————————————
You are the evil temptation in the form of sweets and must jump into the mouth of people who are on a diet.
—————————————————————
You are the god of sins. You get points by leading people to commit sins. The bigger the sin the more points.
————————————————————–

Now time to start coding. Watch it all go down live right here: http://www.twitch.tv/naughtyloose 😀

Blurry morning

The image of my desk is as blurry as my mind right now. But let’s get this thing started!

Progress after lots of sleep and a few hours of work

1

It’s not much, but it’s a great start 😀

The idea for my entry is that you are an AI of some facility and you realize that the humans you are assisting are bad people and they should die. You can kill them in various ways, and some strategies will give you more points and achievements than others. Obviously the poor humans don’t want to die so when they notice something is wrong they will try to escape, which is bad for you.

So far I’ve got a very basic level editor with a working export function (pressing P writes it to the console 😀 ) and right now I’m going to start on adding the gameplay features. Today I’d like to finish most of the gameplay, so I have tomorrow for graphics, sounds, fun stuff and polish. No idea how far I’ll get today, though, as there still is a lot to do and I want to have many interactions possible.

9 hours in

Starting to get a bit tired now. I’ve done quite a bit in the last two hours.

  • Minimap is rendered cleaner
  • Mobs appear on the minimap
  • Heroes now spawn randomly in your dungeon (light blue mobs)
  • You can now also build walls
  • Added functionality to create new minions for gold

9 Hours

After 7 hours of work, here’s a demo to play! Also.. going to sleep for a bit

Before I get a little rest (as usual), I thought I’d share a screenshot and a demo build of my game. I am LOVING this theme. I could’ve done anything, but I chose something fairly simple and to the point.

I said I’d never do randomly generated levels ever again, but here I go again! :)

Link to demo! Please tell me what you think of it. Very early still, but I’m extremely satisfied with what I’ve got so far.

 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/51004934/LD25/Webb01.html

(Basic controls for now are: Left Mouse to shoot, move mouse to aim. No other controls at the moment. Later there will be a boost button, ramps, random background stuff, and a lot of the placeholders will be gone. (Those signs and the look of the character’s vehicle atm will be drastically changed for the final game)

Some screenshots too

This was my original concept drawing. Hopefully you can get the idea of the game from this without me telling you!

Good luck, everyone! I’ll be back in a few hours. 😉

I’m in!

I’m joining the jam!

Tech: C#, DX11-only, existing helper classes

My calculator says a city of about 1000 individual citizens (consisting of two legs and arms, a body and a head) and a goat should be doable on current hardware, so let’s build a city-crushing game 😀

No idea if that’s doable in time, so lets get coding!

Progress is being done

So I’ve fixed a few annoying bugs and gottens something that while not yet playable at least is heading on the right track.

MLWDS

All I need to do now is implement minions and add a few more nefarious activities.

Also, since people find it interesting; Have a picture of my breakfast:

Map reading

Tried to add a classic map by hand. Noticed that it was stupid, and decided to write a image-to-map function. After a few bugs, here it is! This bitmask tutorial helped quite a bit to make the code cleaner.

First playable!

Completed the first playable! Ok, it’s incredibly basic, but it shows the basic premise.  The idea is that you’re a burglar, and you must break into people’s houses and steal their valuables.  In future versions, I hope to add people, windows that need to be broken, burglar alarms, upgrades, and lots more …

For now, just use the cursor keys, and pick up the money.

Concepting/Thinking

I’ve been trying to come up with ideas for a while now, and I think that I’ve settled for something. You can see the concept drawings on my Ludum Hub.

My Hub

Mosquitos, Malaria and You!

mosquito_65147_7

See that? That’s you!

For our project, Send More People is going to make a game where you play as a mosquito spreading the malaria virus. Gameplay will be about finding your victim and biting them “properly” to prevent yourself getting caught. Ideally the player learns something about the process, and about NGOs seeking to combat the disease.

I spent the night thinking (and dreaming) of ideas… I think I have a decent idea, mechanically, of how the game will play. But there’s no time to waste! I’ve got to get deving if I want a complete project.

Stay tuned here or on our Twitter feed for more developments.

Yummy!

I still haven’t started!

I haven’t started. I’ve got a vague idea of what game I want to make… But I need to go out soon, which gives me time to think more about the idea… Should be able to get started this afternoon. But before I go, it’s time for lunch:

supermaximo93_steak_pie

My progress so far

screenshot1

This is what I’ve got so far. I’m making a game where you play as a vampire / goat bloodsucker (Chupacabra), and your goal is to eliminate all the vampire hunters that are after you.

I had some trouble setting my camera up correctly, but thankfully it’s fixed now. I’m going to take a little break now, and after that I’ll continue implementing features.

stealth goat

Alright, I think I got something: You play a goat that needs to eat some bushes without being discovered. Basically a top down stealth game where the environment can be consumed. I guess I just want to make a cover of this game, but retheme it in a garden and you are a goat.  So yeah, a cover game. I suspect something will go horribly awry, and I will need to change everything. But that is the fun of it, making things up as you go along.

Oh also, I don’t really have 48 hours, because I have some other plans. SPECTACULAR FAILURE HERE I COME!

(Also, how sweet does that game look?!? Holy crap!)

Oh also, since I didn’t do the “I’m in” post:

– unity

– every asset and script I can grab from the asset store and tutorials

– probably maschine for some tunes

Inspirational pictures of goats

More inside.

Yall better put goats in your game.

Getting started

I overslept today, so I’m a little late to the party…

Anyway, I’ve got a basic idea going and I’m currently prototyping it. The basic premise is that you’re Cthulhu and you have to drive people insane in order to rack up points. It’s not very fleshed out currently, but I’ll develop it as I go along. The most important thing for now is to get a basic engine up and running.

Here’s my WIP of the idle Cthulhu sprite. I’m not the best pixel artist as you can see… 😛

cthulhuIdle

I hope I’ll be able to finish with a complete game this time, unlike my last entry.

Good luck to all of the other participants!

My start

This is my first time making a game for ludum dare, and I strongly hope that I will keep motivation!

My idea for the game is s0mething with alien-turtles, famous world locations and massive destruction >:D!

Tools I use:

  • Photoshop for graphics
  • Audacity for sounds
  • Gamemaker Studio for coding

Her you get my first work done:

I’m really excited and looking forward to see what you will create :)

Weirdest night of my life, Ludum dare, coffee and cake!

So, where to start!? if this wasnt the most extraordinary I wouldnt mind about sharing it to you guys, it is completely unrelated to making games, but this is certainly going to have an impact on my game for this LD.

The story starts yesterday, right after the theme was announced, I left my home to a party with my girlfriend (wich I didnt wanted to go on the first place). The party sucked, and we went home early by sugestion of a drunk version of myself. I accompanied her to her house, not to far from where the party was, and I started my journey back home trough a semi-dangerous neightborhood at 5 AM, all alone. Halfway from home, I cross eyes with two individuals walking on my opposite direction, three seconds later they turned around and started to follow me. It al happens blazing fast, they had a knife, they where pressing it into my stomach while pushing me into an alley. I was drunk, and didnt moved a finger, just stayed there, watching how the situation developed itself. When I raise my eyes to the street looking for someone near,  I see a police truck patrolling. Imagine my relief when I saw they stopped to see what was going on, afterwards they got down, asked me if they had done anything to me, threw the two guys to the floor, took their knifes, and proceeded to interrogate me on the police station for about one and a half hour.

Then I came back home, walking because the police men didnt had any cars available to take me back..  Once I got back my idea was to start working on the game, but I had this feeling in my guts, it was half hangover and half trauma, this sort of stuff never happened to me, and if it wasnt because of the police men who passed by, im pretty sure I would have got stabbed (and robbed of course)

After a few awful draws, stupid ideas wich led to nowhere, and my incapacity to draw anything on paper because of my shaky hands, I decided the best was to go to sleep and let both the hangover and trauma of the moment fade away. So here I am now, fresh and happy because I am the luckiest bastard in town, and I got two mother*****s in jail at least for a week (according to the police men)

Gameboy pallete tilesets

Gameboy pallete tilesets

In an hour after I woke up I got an idea, a little bit inspired because of everything that happened to me last night, you are the thief, you have to break into other poeple’s houses, rob them avoid alarms, dogs, goats, grannys, steal their stuff, catch em in the street, buy guns or stuff to make your tasks easier and, above all, avoid getting capturated. Well, thats the concept!

I decided to go with a gameboy classic layout and palette for this one, basically because I just lost many hours on my venture, and I cant afford to waste any time now!

Gato and I enjoying a delightful coffee+cake lunch/breakfast/whatever :)

Gato and I

Enjoy your lifes guys, you never know what might happen, and above all, HAVE FREAKING FUN!!! :D

Inverseteroids

I don’t really have the time to write out a full post, but this is an asteroids clone where you play as the asteroids. I don’t know if I’ll have time to finish the player AI, but it will be multiplayer.

Note: I’m partially colorblind, how does it look?

Pew!

Even more progress

Im starting to be happy with the look and feel :-) Lets add some game content :-)

Saturday Lunch Progress!

Good morning so far! I have a basic interface in, and some not too terrible art.

But first: The obligatory lunch photo! Cheese and pickle sandwich, banana, crisps, chocolate muffin and apple juice. 😀

Below is a current screenshot.Nothing too fancy, but it’s getting there. Next is to actually have goblins moving about – wander to the pit, mine some stone, go back to the hovel to sleep.

Washed Up

2012-12-15 12.33.28

So. It comes down to this. I’m making a game about washing up.

“Do what you know” -Someone.

2D in Game Maker. I want to use a 360 controller, but.. hmm.. We’ll see about that. Think Jet Set Radio meets trance music, in a kitchen.

5 Hours in, update

So,

I have 5 hours now to work on my first Ludum Dare, progress is slower then I would have hoped. With my primary bottleneck being just over one year old and constantly trying to steal the mouse, or get me to read her a book!

Here is my game:

GameLogo

The idea being you are a villain imprisoned on Prison Planet 1, after acquiring a shuttle you have to get as far away as you can, before being blown up! So far I have been mainly battling with setting basic stuff up, and prototyping the movement controls for flying the shuttle. Then I will shove the planet in as the point you must escape from, as well as a distance counter, from there on in its hopefully randomly generating obstacles to avoid and enemy ships that will try to destroy you.

Here’s the first screenshot, and a photo of the main programming tools.

Super Evil Machine — design mockup

So, I have a machine of evil… a Super Evil Machine!

Have to do regular work now — but will be getting stuck into constructing this thing-squashing monstrosity in a few hours.

Progress so far…

Ok, so far so good. Got my rudimentary graphics completed so I can finally start on some code. The below is a simple mock up I put together so you can see what I have in mind.

lD48 Mockup

Hoping to have something between Lemmings and Spy vs Spy (if you remember those old games?). Also I’ll eventually smarten up the graphics before I finish but that all depends on the code :)

Hello Everybody, i started the Ludum Dare today at 10h00 (GMT+1)

With a concept about the game who’s i called “MARTYR” those are 2 states of the main character…

The begin state This is the final state

I work with

Engine : Construct2
graphics: Paint.net maybe phtoshop for BG
Sound: not started yet

Good lucke to Everybody

I have entered the playable zone.

My entry for this LD has reached a stage at which it can be called a “game”. Thus, I have decided to allow downloadage to those wishing to become early adopters: https://www.dropbox.com/s/1szlg18euygdqwn/Invasion.rar

What makes a villain

I totally said I wasn’t going to enter this weekend but I’m going to do my best to work around social obligation and get something done for this very interesting theme!

So here’s my initial concept: you are an executioner. Each day you get out of bed, go to work and as commanded, kill people in cold blood. Will you mercilessly perfect your murderous art, for which you will be rewarded by the City? Or is there another way…

It’s rather dark, so hopefully I get time to flesh it out and do it justice. And I’m using Flixel for this once again. Good luck everyone!

And the base has been made

Yup, I came with a quick and simple game and made the base of the game. Long story short, you’re a bank robber who has just robbed a bank, and are trying to flee from the police by car. The game itself is a basic car chase game with a few extra elements like shooting from your car.

Oh, and before anyone says so, a bank robber is technically a villain. ;P

car chase screenshot 1

Yes, the graphics suck and may be confusing, that may or may not be improved tomorrow.

Zzard

So. I am on a community meeting (http://forum.vch.cz – only in czech) and we agreed on making a game for LD48. There’s around 16 or 18 people. We have programmers, graphics, sound artist, PR, story writers and some other guys.

Now about the idea we came up with. It’s gonna be about an alien on mars that is trying to ruin NASA mission.

Just don’t expect anything big, some people will leave during this evening and we’re going to submit it this night or tomorrow morning.

Now some pics:

First Update: Goat Hate Jug Band

im 3 hours in now, I have a concept, a name, some graphics, some sound, so i am going to take a walk now to think about what the gameplay will really be

The basic idea is an evil goat on a farm hating the music the farmers make. He tries to interrupt them with well timed noises.

Stress.

I’m in stress. I got the idea for the game half day after publication of theme. Forgott to push latest update of IGM2E I made for LD25 just before LD25 (engine I am using). Nah… at least I have got some Mentos UP2U.

Plans for now:

– Upload picture of food  (Can’t find it)

(Done)

– Port platorm engine to topdown engine

– Start working on resources

– Start working on maps

– Start working on engine (polishing, fine tuning)

– Do forgotten things
