LD25 December 14–17, 2012

Just one of those days

I only have one of my personal computers crash on me about once every two years. Today was the day that my desktop decided to go. Unplugging extra hard drives, clearing the CMOS and waiting… Hopefully the thing stops rebooting. Luckily, I have my laptop if things go really bad.

Progress has been made!

So far so good!

For those with bad eye-sight. I have a little FPS: 0 (was 60 actually) in the top left corner.

Using LWJGL and Slick2d written in Java. I really look forward to seeing all the progress you all make. Also, I won’t post my workspace since it’s my dinning room table and a laptop. Super awesome.

ss1

off to a good start

So, I’m making a game where you’re an evil villain like from a bond film, and you are trying to build your secret lair in a volcanic island. You’ll get points for luring agents into your lair and taunting them with your plans, or disposing of them in stupidly elaborate ways. It’s not the most original idea in the world, probably a third of the entries will be some kind of take on this, but I’ve always wanted to write this game and when the theme came up I couldn’t resist.

Screen Shot 2012-12-14 at 11.07.26 PM

Off to a good start. I have a level background drawing and a minimap thinggy that you can scroll. So far Dartlang has been pretty nice, the only weirdnesses that have come up have been idiosyncrasies of the underlying html/javascript world which dart can’t do much about.

The best part is that I can upload playable builds for the first time ever. This is kind of a new thing for me. Check it out:

Playable version here.

Not much there now, but I’ll try to keep this updated as the contest progresses.

GarageBand Special

Tonight I composed a tune in GarageBand. I was hoping it would help bring me some inspiration… I guess I will sleep on it…

Western Game Thing is coming along!

Progress with my game has been going well! But before I go on about that, here’s a picture of my breakfast (grated cheese and rocket sandwich <3) and cheese strings, with a packet of choccy digestives. Yum. Also, I’m a coeliac, hence the tiny bread and “Free From” food. :P

My breakfast and biscuits to last me the two days. <3

My breakfast and biscuits to last me the two days. <3

The game has been coming along well! My idea was a sort of western bandit thing, but simplified down to just one fight between you and the town’s hero. I’m doing this, as I’ve never really programmed any AI before, so I fancied spending my time creating a worthwhile enemy. Here’s a picture of the game, along with its FUNKY graphics style:

Dual Sticks with Movement

iOS Simulator Screen shot Dec 14, 2012 11.14.19 PM This was way easier than I thought it was going to be. First I found joystick code here. http://www.cocos2d-x.org/boards/6/topics/2438. Some modifications had to be made. This was from a year ago so some functions have been changed and it was for 1 joystiq. I just made some simple change not very robust to make it two but it will do. I then found some art for the joystiq here http://opengameart.org/content/side-scrolling-fantasy-themed-game-assets. It’s a little off center but I think I can figure it out but for now it’s good enough. Goals for next hour: Shoot things with other joystiq Android version

6hr-ish Update

When I first saw the theme, I have to admit I was a bit worried. I noticed the theme previously during the voting, and quietly thought to myself “I hope that doesn’t come out”, but here we are.

Its been about 5-6hrs since the theme has been announced, and I’m quite happy with my progress. I’ve managed to think of a pretty cool concept (to me anyway) for the narrative, and I’m about done with half the mechanics of the game, though I’ll need a lot of time to polish and what not.
Screenshot 2012-12-15 at 03.13.04 PM

Judging by the few peeks I’ve had at the page, many people have spectacular stuff planned or prepared, so I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s submission.

Press on!

Progress report!

Recursive backtracker maze generation, complete with A* pathfinding and a Dijkstra-based “heat map” (a la Left 4 Dead’s AI Director)!

Actual gameplay : None! BUT I’LL GET TO THAT

Also there are some potential sprites in the upper left of the window super-imposed onto the Window.

First Update

Well this is my first development update, I will start with just a screenshot for now :)

report

I give up.

After 4 hours of working on map generation, I just plain give up.

Don’t do that! :( If it’s too hard, just think of another idea!

Begining of new day!

Call me crazy, but I just finished brainstorming with myself alone… in sleep. :) It’s like superpower! What my game idea is? I’ll do death worm for two players. I am not so good at graphic so it won’t be impressive.
And of course I’ve got a goat! Maybe she doesn’t look good but she’s my, and I LOVE HER!

I hate 3D :(

So I’ve finally woken up, and after designing a few tilesets I’ve decided I want a 3d main hub. Only problem is, I can’t use Blender and it’s all I got :(

Oh well, I better get on with it. Also, the idea’s a secret :) I don’t want anyone stealing it just yet.

Polar

(-:)>*

A bit late, but I’m in too!

Sorry to be late, but I was busy yesterday and just woke up (it’s 8am in germany). The framework I’ll be using is my own (Kiwi): https://www.dropbox.com/s/gr2zbopdpayqaj4/kiwi.rar

Since I’m not going to win anyways, this is probably not a big deal. I also used this in LD24 so this is probably even less of a deal.

Good luck!

3.5 Hours In

Quick update. Health on the plants is now represented:

3.5 hours in

ToDo List:

  • The Sun and it’s relationship to the plants
  • Sprites for the ground and troll
  • Artwork for the sky
  • Properly masked collision on plants
  • Death animation / particles for plants and troll
  • Multiple ground areas
  • Ladders or transport devices
  • Audio

LD25 Progress Report #3

Starting to add junctions. There we go. An intentional omission is an X junction, because it’s un-toggleable. Fixed some issues with the sprites, missing planks and rounded up corners. Next up, coding an actual train to follow the tracks, initially ignoring junctions.

progress

just a quick shot of the placeholder art i’ve got while i work out the code. Once all the mechanics of the game are in place I’ll loop back and polish up the art a bunch. Things are moving along nicely. No road blocks yet…(knock on wood).

Screen Shot 2012-12-14 at 11.25.18 PM

So I got some ideas but nothing to program them with

I have an idea:

you aren’t the main villain, you’re one of his or her lackies. In this case, said lacky will be an awesome badass cool dude who does all the dirty work and undergoes a huge villain arc and eventually being redeemed in the end kinda villain.

character2

one badass dude. I will probably make the sprites better and more detailed than that though.

You are the villain in Subterranean Farm Maniac

Before going to sleep I had http://videogamena.me/ generate me a game name. Just woke up and read the theme.

So apparently, in my game you are the villian in Subterranean Farm Maniac…. yeah…. I wonder what that will be like when I had my coffee 😀

Source and stuffs will be available, follow along at

http://code.google.com/p/subterraneanfarmmaniac/

Not much sleep

I don’t work well without some sleep, I think I might have been better waiting to here what the theme was then sleeping. All I have done is dream about themes till I woken up.
Right, Coffee and toast and I have a mull over the theme. Though been a villain means I can bring chaos from my fortress of evil and time of day or night and people will fear me as I bring upon them the end of the world.

Woot.

First Update

Didn’t get home from a work End of Year party until about two hours in, and took a third hour to come up with an idea. Luckily, I’ve been able to implement the basic functionality pretty quickly, especially since I’ve never done anything stealth related.

Basically, you’re a lumberjack, and you need to chop down all of the trees in each level without being caught. Right now, there’s only one enemy type (standard hippie), but I’ve implemented patrols and sightlines in a way that will allow me to add others relatively quickly. Maybe I’ll be able to spend more time working on art and sound this time around lol.

Anyway, here’s the first ugly screenshot. I’m decently happy with the characters, but the ground, vision cone, and probably the tree will all be replaced at some point.

Cant sleep! Streaming!

So I cant sleeeeeeeeeeeep! going to start shift 2! @ http://www.twitch.tv/skyllartor#

5 hours and 37 minutes after the start!

I overslept the start, how could i? I woke up 3 hours late but I’m already in, crafting the idea. Here is the first preview (in-game screenshot). I’m also happy that Goat won, I’m so putting goat into the game ^^

preview1This is going to be dungeon-management game

You are the red dot. Green can kill you. Blue are neutral.

Gotta go look after the kids for a while. My brain is flowing with ideas now :)

What the..

Where did the time go already???

OK, I think I’ve got an idea going. I am almost certainly biting off more than I can chew. Yikes.

What am I doing?

Think The Joker. Hans Gruber. Hannibal Lector.

What do I have to work with? A rickety little end table, a 4-year old Aspire One, a sketchbook, and a Papermate PhD ultra, and some dried banana chips. Let’s do this.

Oh yeah? Which part? The game idea, or the setup, or the horribly slow start? 😛

After 5 hours and 40 minutes

Well I needed to sleep after theme announcement. :)

Got Idea and I am ready to make “Mr. Cylinder”.

I’m in!

I’m a bit late, but I’m in!

I’ll use C++ with OpenGL an a my WIP framework https://bitbucket.org/theGiallo/opengl_secondproject under Debian 64bit, for graphics MyPaint and GIMP.

I hope it will go better than the last time. Recording a timelapse with a script I found on the internet, and modified. if you need it it’s here https://dl.dropbox.com/u/27823819/LD/timelapse.sh

ey bit offtopic, but havent you created some grenade mods for crysis back in the crymod.com days? Just recognized your profile pic =D

You are the Villain, eh?

8 am something in germany, finally woke up, getting up, brushing teeth, writing a postVillain eh?
First idea: Kitty destroying a living room while you are a laser pointer –> nice, but too much content to draw
Second idea: space invaders, you are the commander of the invaders with three buttons: shoot randomly, fly towards enemy and shoot, go faster + fly lower + in reverse order –> nostalgic, but not my style
Let’s see if I come up with a better idea 😀

Graphic-less, but working!

What on earth is this?
villain1
It sure doesn’t look like a game, but it is! Most of the real action is happening on the command line, though.

The idea came to me pretty early into the competition, but it’ll be easier to explain once I have some graphics going. I’m working hard to get the groundwork finished.

The real challenges with this game will be making the graphics and balancing the action. Since I’m an inexperienced coder, something that’s easy to get running and then can be tweaked indefinitely is a far better choice for me than pulling my hair out over a physics engine.

A day in the life of The Minotaur

LD25 – 3am – Perlin Noise

I just spent the last hour figuring out perlin noise generation to make the maps nicer.

IT WORKED!

I think I may apply the same to the corruption gen…maybe. Or I might just make it a small square or circle.

screenshot_3am

Starting late

Totally forgot about LD, but I love this theme. I figure a late start is better than no start.

Here is my workspace. Yay.

setupGoing to be using Unity 4 and some get-it-done-fast plugins.

7 hours later, I start

9:00am here in Spain, I brainstorm my brain to decide what to do. There are a bunch of ideas, but I think I will go for the simplest one: a shoot’em up. I will code everything with rectangles, and later on start with the art.

Lets go!

Im in!

After 2hours of gathering inspiration, jeah ok I only watched “The pinky and the brain” I finaly came up with my idea. Gonna code in actionscript 3 and am still in search for a name, guess I gonna name it afterwards. For those who never watched “The pinky and the brain”check this out:

Ouh and my game will be a 2D sidescroller, were you constantly gonna end up in prison. Will explain more in the following updates

cheers

Jery from JoyBoxed

3 hours in…

It has been almost three hours since I woke up and started thinking about an idea.

Now, I have a scrolling, tiled map procedurally generated. My idea is still solidifying in my mind, but I think I have got most of the concept ironed out. Hopefully I scoped it right this time, and I can finish up the gameplay today. I would love to have a full day dedicated to art, music, and polish.

Monochrome programmer art.

Monochrome programmer art.

One can dream, heh ? :)

So, just woken up at 8.00 AM on a Saturday, which is just… Unhealthy… But LD is worth it! I love the theme that has been chosen, and here’s my “Ideas.txt” about it:

YOU ARE THE VILLAIN #LD48, #LD25

– You Are SATAN!!! – You Are The ULTIMATE Villain
– Load of minigames
– Boss battle with the Yah-Wei
– Boss battle with THE FLYING SPAGHETTI MONSTER!
– PITCHFORK AS CURSOR!!!

– Minigames
     – You need to get as much people to hell as possible.
         – Busy street with people. You pick one of them, and there’s a dialog.
         – Meh.
     – You need to torture people in hell.
         – Will get repetative.
     – You need to fight as many gods as possible, before the time runs out.
         – Will get repetative.
         – Each of them has their own powers!

Everyone has to start somewhere

woooo title page

I have a pretty decent idea of what I’m going to be doing over the next day.

So far I managed to do some writing, create a good overall structuring, and made some “art”

Twine is hopefully going to make completing attainable. I need to just try not to get too caught up in attempting to make presentable art and focus on completion.

GOGOGO

We are starting right now the jam with gyhyom !

Our game will be titled Little Death Adventure !

Personal Library that I’m using

It’s not very good and the code is awful because I had to rush to get it usable in time for LD.

So here is the download: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/53837961/envy3d_MaybeHelpfulGameCreationStuff.rar

Inside is:

  • A small collision detection library that only returns true or false for collisions between points, lines, Circles, AABBs, and hierarchies of those shapes.
  • A lovely, small camera class that does bounds checking and includes the ability to defines an area of the screen within which movement of the object the camera is looking at will not move the camera.
  • Some random bits of code that I stopped working on in order to focus on more important things.
  • A map editor that can be added to a game to allow rapid testing of levels.
  • And the last feature? Zero documentation for the moment :/

8am in the UK, and I think I’m ready.

Plans to start at 2 in the morning fell apart, so I woke up nice and early to brainstorm. Hadn’t seen the theme yet and was honestly expecting End of the World, which is a shame cause I had a great idea for it. (What if the most fundamental thing you thought you knew was wrong? You wake up one day thinking the apocalypse is coming, and must flee. Eventually you get on a boat and get dragged out to sea, where you literally fall off “the end of the world,” and the game zooms out to show you the entire planet is flat.)

New themes mean new ideas, so I think after an hour I have an acceptable idea. I’m possibly the worst artist in the world so hopefully my programming will at least do it justice.

Didn’t fancy the 8am much myself and was similarly expecting “End Of The World”.

6 Hours… no sleep… send coffee

First update and screeny:

Just a quick glance at the front page of posts tells me that quite a few people had similar ideas though :S

Well, regardless, I’m pretty happy with my idea and hopefully the story/setup and game mechanics are enough to hold it’s own :)

Dexter

Trying to get started

Getting a late start, but oh well. I’m leaning toward a stealth based game, in terms of the theme I am wanting to do the rise of the villain. So maybe something to do with a evil AI. still in early stages.

Since I am working by myself this time I will be sticking with what I am used to for the most part, which means robots, probably third person.

Sight mechanics now in . . . onto patrols

As our story continues, you, the alien, here to do the advance scouting work for the coming alien invasion of Earth and the long-awaited extermination of the human race, find your way to . . . Area 51.

Your discovery at the end of the tutorial level told you that your Dear Leader was taken prisoner by human soldiers and taken to a top secret testing facility.

Here is where the true fun begins.

At this point you have several powers at your disposal.

Camouflage — Which we are calling Blending.

A disintegration ray.

And a mind-control beam.

Your first task will be to gain entry to the heavily guarded and fortified Area 51.

In the previous level, you practiced using your disintegration ray on chickens, and your mind control and powers of camouflage on simple farmers. Here, however, you must tangle with trained soldiers.

In the first third of this level, you will discover an armory–a stash of alien weaponry. It’s old and out of date by your standards, but still powerful and high tech compared to anything the puny humans have. You retrieve two new items–a Hologram Generator and a weapon know on your home planet simply as the “Chicken Hawk.”

Line of sight and detection are going to be key components in the game play. As an alien, your strange form will be easily identifiable by the soon-to-be-extinct humans. So for now, you must do your best to avoid raising the alarm. (Don’t worry, you will have your day, and the humans will pay for what they have done to your Dear Leader . . . Muwahahahaha. Ahem, but we’re getting ahead of ourselves.)

Here’s a sample of our code at the moment.

dearleader_code

Up next, patrols and way points.

LD25 Progress Report #4

Simple train placeholder added. Aligns according to tracks, and moves forwards according to direction of travel. Incomplete, tile transitions need to reverse speed according to side of tile entered. Can’t think of an elegant way of doing it.

4

End of the first night

I’m making a little Dragon Quest-ish rpg where you play as the “Evil Lord”. You watch the Hero go through a dungeon and place monsters for him to fight. You take control of the monsters during battle and try to whittle down the Hero’s HP in a series of “Random Battles”, and defeat him before he reaches the end of the dungeon. Will I finish it in time? Will it be fun? Who knows!
(Ignore the silly placeholder sprites :) )

Underway

Up and at ’em; it’s just after 8am in England. Hi to anyone else in Oxford! (though last time I checked there weren’t many)

I’m already feeling a little better about things than for LD24: I have an idea, and there’s a fair chance it’ll be pretty fun if it turns out. It’s not super-original, but is a bit of an alternate take on some games I’ve liked in the past.

There seem to be a lot of possibilities with this theme (have to admit, I struggled with “evolution” last time) so hopefully we’ll get a good variety of entries from people with all sorts of ideas (: Nice work by the organisers to give us plenty of interesting themes to choose from.

Good luck to all!

Electronics are done

At least I think they are. Wasn’t very hard at all 😛

I had to use the screen sideways to ge the most pixels vertically. It’s also glitching very badly due to a poor contact between the PCB and the LCD itself.. Can’t fix that but it’ll still be playable. If you look closely you’ll be able to see an image there (from the library demo, not my code yet).

The small square besides the blue speaker is the only button, it will be used to switch the type of the falling piece.

IMG_1634

Slowly forward

As this is my first Ludum Dare (and a second compo/jam overall), I was a bit sceptical if I’ll be able to produce something. 48h is both very little and a load of time. But oh well, we signed up, so we gotta take part. The theme proved to be quite interesting. My mind was blank at first, but after sharing thoughts with a friend, we came up with a few ideas:

  • dungeon master – building dungeons, which AI heroes go through
  • destroy things – oh well, you are destroying things, so that makes you a villain, eh?
  • reverse shmup – a bit like an RTS, when you control a zerg rush and try to kill that one overpowered bad guy hero
  • no john, you are the daemons – only at the end of things, you realise you did wrong and that, in truth, you are the villain
  • tranquillity lane – borrowed from Fallout 3, simply a place where you are tasked to do nasty things to people

ld25-0
Giving it some thought, I decided to go with… Nah, I won’t spoil anyone the fun. Fortunately, an old idea I had some time ago proved to (after modifying the scenario a bit) fit quite well with the theme. So far I managed to write some basic map code, three dumb-dumb enemy classes, hero movement and drawing. As you can guess from the image, the game will be kept in a very simple graphics style. Since it’s 0914 local time, I’m getting a bit sleepy, but oh well… I’ll be able to sleep for an eternity in the coffin. Enough talk, the IDE awaits!

Let’s get started!

After a nice breakfast I’m ready to ruuuumble!

Oh while in “let’s find out what to do panic mode” I found this website, it helped me a lot getting ideas.I think it might be worth sharing :)

angler fish toy “playable”

Instead of waiting for my Inkling pen to charge, I dusted off my wife’s old Wacom tablet from college. I grabbed the angler fish from my sketches I liked best, threw that on a guide layer in Flash, and traced the sucker. I’ve never used a drawing tablet before–it works pretty well once you get the hang of it, but it’s pretty fricking tiring to use. I imagine they’ve gotten better in the last six years or so, but it makes me wonder if all the Flash artists I know are secretly ripped in their drawing arms.

WP_20121214_004_sm

I thought the tablet was pretty cool for drawing outlines, coloring, and erasing–but for any really fine stuff I ended up switching to the mouse. Once I had the outline in, I started carving it up and rigging it in Flash. The pectoral fin, fishing lure, and upper jaw are all in one group which can pivot while the rest of the body is still fixed. I went ahead and set up a “slider” right on the jaw from fully open to fully closed, but I haven’t decided how I’m going to do an actual chomp yet.

I’ll probably break up the chin piece and the bobber into different segments so I can give them a little bit of wiggle. Skewing the pectoral fin on the y-axis does a pretty good job of making it look like it’s moving, so I’ll probably do something similar for the tailfin. I’ll probably also break the stomach off of the main body so I can do some tummy expansion and jiggles once this bad boy eats some fish.

In terms of design, I’m still very much at the “toy” phase. I threw on some simple WASD/arrow movement and set the jaw to open/close based on the x-coordinate of the mouse. Just tinkering with this gives me enough direction for where I want to go with this: instead of shaking a phone like I first thought, I’ll have the player navigate the Angler fish with WASD and “shake” the mouse to shake its lightbulb. It’s a pretty ridiculous motion (navigating with the left and shaking with the right), but I think it’ll be pretty fun.

We are in

This time we are going to do the Jam, and we are representing our hackerspace, Nigmalabs. Makdaam is going to make sounds and play music, while I will draw and code.

Here’s my desk:
IMAG0476

Ah, and the logo for Nigmalabs:
nigma

I’m in, I think

I’ve been mulling over the theme while having breakfast, and not sure what to do. Ok, I have some ideas, but most of them are either so sick they should never see the light of day, or have some nasty complexities about them, meaning I’d have bugger all to show. Mainly, a decent A.I. would be needed to adapt to you foiling their plans … the sort of A.I. that I don’t have enough experience with to create something workable in the time.

Anyway, I’m gonna press on, and hope a simpler, doable idea pops into my head.

The tools I’ll be using are:

Design

  • A big whiteboard, with lots of space for scrawling ideas on
  • The try-it-and-see method

Coding

  • GameMaker: Studio

Graphics

  • Corel Paint Shop
  • Blender

There’s no way I’ll be making a 3D game, but my 3D modelling is far better than my 2D programmer art, so I’d be aiming at creating very simple models, then taking snapshots.

Sound

  • Audacity (Sound Effects, recorded using a cheap microphone and whatever I can find that sounds about right)
  • ACID Xpress (“Music” … I use that term as loosely as possible. Only if there’s enough time)

Time-lining

Usually, I create a page on my website that I update with comments, screenshots, and vidcaps, over the course of the compo/jam. This usually takes me far too long, and I’ll be revamping the website soon anyway. So, this time I’m going to be completely boring about it, and just make the odd tweet or post here, depending on progress.

Good luck everybody, and have fun!!

The Water Shrine

I didn’t make an “I’m in!” post this time, but I’m in.

So far, I’ve made up some scratch graphics, designed a level format, and written a utility to convert Tiled Map Editor levels into my level format. Here’s what the first area in the Water Shrine level currently looks like in-game:

out2

It doesn’t have any water yet, that will come.

First jam evar!

I’m super pumped to be participating finally, been threatening to for a long time.

I think I’m going to do a loose interpretation of the theme. I kind of want the player to feel a little hatred, a little loathing. Probably will involve frustrating the player, hahaha.

or should that be mwahaha.

Looks like i’m in, and really late…

Just found out that Ludum began 6 hours ago… I hope it’s still possible to for me to join in and get a game out in time. First time here and don’t really know what I’m doing.

I will be using Stencyl or GameMaker, because im lazy (and completely out of time) and html skills are rusted. Seems like it’s gona be jam entry then? Or was Stencyl ok for actual compo entries?

Progress report #1

Heyo.

So, umm, I don’t really like the theme and I’m not quite sure what kind of a game I will make, but, I made a map!

Nap time!

first look

If one day you wake up and think ” i will make a game with the jaws library!”, just remember to not set the canvas dimensions with css. I spent a lot of time figuring out why all my sprites were horribly out of scale :S

As you can see, i am not an artist. if i got time, i will try to upgrade the art.

First Update

After working on the engine for a few hours, we finally added something tangible. We are brilliant artists.

progress! i think

just after 3am here, managed to get terrain based off of a random heightmap, as well as dragging around, see:

screenshot-1355559510126

Tomorrow I plan on adding the actual gameplay, it’ll be something to the effect of being the villain in an rpg
As for now I should probably sleep..

Power up!

After that crappy BP experience, I’m cashing in my first power: The cash.

Cashing in my first power up.

Cashing in my first power up.

The result of cashing in my first power up.

The result of cashing in my first power up.

I’m in!

I’ve been itching to make a game in Nape (http://napephys.com/) the past few days so that is what I am going to do.

I am gonna make a platformer where you kill all the things.

That’s pretty evil right?

physicszone

I’ve got the physics engine doing the bitch work, the levels being created by a level design elf in your computer, and player movement is satisfactory for now.

Play it here – http://www.netgrindgames.com/cale/LD25.swf

arrow keys / restart for a new map

BTW, I am cheating a little and using a map generating class from a few weeks ago and as such I feel I should toss it out into the breeze for anyone to grab if they wish. The code is in as3 but the logic (messy, weird, logic) could be translated to anything with loops and arrays – http://pastebin.com/berEzMT9

Now off to bed. Pumped for tomorrow!

A first

I haven’t joined any Ludum Dare before, although I’ve participated in a multitude of other game jams. This time, however, I’m not at my usual place but at my parents’, meaning all I have to work with is a pretty shitty computer I’m not used to working on. It’s difficult to go from 1920×1080 to 1024×600 (such an unorthodox resolution).

I’ll be using Game Maker since it’s very good at quick prototyping and getting something up and running is very fast. I’ll be working (forever) alone for that is what I do.

Without further ado, let the Funny Games begin.

Feelings, under my carpet,

I don’t want to do the same Dungeon Keeper fangame everyone’s doing, I have something more gimmicky in mind. A bit like reverse Lemmings, maybe. Resource management, fast-paced micromanagement, some building and emergent puzzles. All these arising from minimal elements that interact effectively. As little physics and AI as possible, those aren’t usually worth the time when you can represent them with something more abstract and maybe even more interesting.

It might look something like this:

“Infected” – First Progress

Alright so i’ve been working on my title “Infected” for a few hours. Honestly i had 2 different game ideas. I preferred my 1st one but it would take way too long for 48 hours.

Instead i chose my second one, “Infected”. It’s HOPEFULLY faster to develope than my original idea… but we will see.

I am not an artist and so far i’ve spent a lot of time on the art style, trying to figure out some things. I have to say i’m very happy with where it is at now, or at least which direction it takes.

I wasn’t sure about one thing though. It’s hard to see but in the background you can see some clouds. Those are slightly animated using a simplexnoise. I downloaded that file from here: http://code.google.com/p/simplexnoise/

Not sure if this is against the rules or not, as i think it counts as base code/library, but let me know if i’m wrong! Don’t wanna get disqualified :)

Anyway, i have a Unity webplayer demo available that i will keep updating constantly. It might destroy some older PC’s considering how many effects i’m using right now, but i will trim it down and optimize it soon!

Prototyped rework

I reworked a good portion of how I display and communicate information to the player. The Player now receives a good amount of feedback from the actions he takes.

I plan on spending time on paper to better polish the mechanics of my game. When it comes to resource management, I want to ensure two things are occurring in my game:

1 – players have only meaningful choices to choose from.

2 – elements of risk vs reward feel as though they are.

At the moment I feel as those are the two biggest issues in my game. I’ll be spending the next hour or two away from the code to think this threw.

As of now I feel good though. I’m further along then I expected and haven’t come into any major road blocks. The mind is willing to continue through the night, but the body is tired :(

I’m getting vertigo just looking at code. Is that normal?

First Post of the Day

I hope everyone is making good progress and of course, having lots of fun.

Here’s my first screenshot. As always I’m keeping a more detailed log of what I’m doing on [my blog].

5 hours

Graphics and level mockup

Just got done with my initial mockup and basic understanding of what I am going to do. Excited about the theme and decided to create some cute little characters for the player to be mean to. Art is not at all my strong suit so hopefully things look decent. Hopefully it looks like towers being built and made of s’mores. I have several things going on here which should allude to what I am trying to accomplish. I am thinking I will probably do love2d for the engine. Not sure what they heck I am going to do for sounds though I have one idea for the sound effects that I think will be fun. Any music suggestions or hints would be very much appreciated.

I am not entirely sure what all will happen but feel free to comment and let your imaginations run wild. Also please let me know what you think so far and any suggestions would be great too.

Also I recently found out that non-Americans are not familiar with this awesomeness called s’mores. If you are one of them read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S’more

BlueByLiquid's game Mockup

LD 25

Proto

Prototype is beginning to take shape about halfway through the first day.
Our idea takes some cues from Evil Genius, with the player attempting to stop the hero from foiling his (or her) dastardly plans

A Tale of a Bridge

So, this is my first time participating in LD48. I’d have tried to do it before, but let’s be honest, I’m just bad at timing and always missed it – except this time.

I’ve had just enough time to vote in the final stage and secretly hoped to get “You are the Villain!” – and bingo! Too bad the start has been at 3:00 am for me, so I had enough forced time to think about the topic while sleeping.

Evil wizard defending his tower? Sneaky bandit going on a shoplifting rampage while avoiding cops? Nah, I’ve got something I like even more… The working title for now is “Black Knight Blockade” and that’s also what the game is about.

First Game Screen

Well, the basics are there… now I just need some more action…

In case you still can’t imagine what it’s all about: Dirty… little… peasants! Dirty little peasants and other scum trying to get over the bridge… your bridge! That’s just disrespectful and must not happen at any costs! Your goal is to show them who’s in charge of the bridge and who decides who shall pass (shhh: the answer is “none!”).

The game is written in C++ and I’m using SFML 2 for input, graphics and stuff. I’m not yet sure if I manage to get it as far as I want within the 48 hours time limit, but we’ll see…

Overall concept completed + some needed sleep

Oops… fell asleep halfway through my brainstorming session and woke up six hours later to finish it. In the end it’s all good, as now I have a good outline of the game. I wish I had a WIP screenshot but that will take a couple of hours, so here’s a shot of the brainstorming results, for what it’s worth…

brainstorm

It’s not the most original thing but I’m doing the game around Propp’s narrative functions and the role of the villain in it. So let’s see how it turns out…

Progressing slowly

I cannot chose an art style yet :( but looking at meaningless circles and squares is annoying

I’m in, I suppose.

Good morning!

Again I’m not prepared and I’m also using something I haven’t done before. Fortunately JavaScript and OpenGL ES is familiar. Initially I was going to continue experimenting with my C++ framework but it ain’t ready for rapid development. So I’d to settle with three.js. Last time I used Lua based framework Löve, which is great but I’m always up for some challenge.

Ok, I spent half hour pondering the theme and settled for an idea similar to Missile Command. Other ideas were pretty similar to what I’ve already seen on other posts. I’m pretty sure my 48h interpretation of Dungeon Keeper or similar switche-roo would’ve not been so nice. Yeah, my game’s twist is that you’re the guy bombing the city. Okay, I think I might add goats too…

+1 Goat

Have a nice Jam, folks.

Progress Update 1

Well, it’s 4PM where I am, so I really should take a break and get some rest. Not as far as long as I would like to be, I wasted a good hour doing art that I ended hating, scrapped it, and went back and redid everytihng. Looks MUCH better, but took 5 hours to fully animate the player character. Have code that plays the animation so far, as well as a lot of content to work with.

Screenshot 1

Tool shot 1

As a note, Paint.NET is probably not the right tool for making animations.

for paint-like animations, i’d recommend graphicscale (see tool page)

Villains always were cowards…

This is all I have so far on a rogue-like(ish) dungeon crawler I’m working on. You play as a villain with his side-kick demon spirit as they run away from a hero who’s fallowing them into the dark depths of a dungeon. You can use your dark magic to fight off monsters; and set traps for the hero. But be wary, the deeper you go in; the quicker and more determined the hero gets.

Let’s just hope this isn’t too ambitious to finish by the deadline. :S

LD25 – 4am – Breeding Corruption

You can now gain evil power and corrupt the land. Your dude also prefers to walk on corruption if his target is along the way as well, so spread it for a bit of indirect control. Generally this game is going to be relatively hands off, with some nice powers that you’ll be able to cast. I think I’ll also let you drop towers or more monster spawners…

screenshot_4am

Goats and hats!

So yeah, Duck and I are making a game about goats that eat hats.

We really couldn’t think of anything better…

I’m thinking….

Didn’t have a great sleep so I’m pretty tired and haven’t thought of my mechanic yet.

You are the villain theme is challenging for me as all my ideas require assets to convey the theme, something I wanted to avoid so I could focus purely on the gameplay.

I think I’ll try for a petty villain, volcano lair but rather the kind of villain doesent indicate when turning.

It begins

After seeing the theme I went straight to bed. (2am here)

Now the developing begins.

Will post pictures when I have something to show

We’re In!

We are “Office Mosh” and this is our first ever jam together!

These are my workstations up and ready to go (one for day use/one for night use).

Best of luck to everyone!

Let’s do this villains!

Ludum Dare Jammin’ Day 1

So me and my brother are taking a go at the jam, and it’s been going rather well. I’m using Löve+lua to do the programming and he’s doing the artwork in photoshop I believe. This is a day summary of all of our activities. :)

First off we brainstormed ideas for around an hour and 20 minutes. We thought of a rather unique idea about a thief who doesn’t murder but finds clever ways to incapacitate enemies and meet the objective mission. All of the missions are randomly generated, as it’s intended to be in arcade-game style.

Second I ate dinner and took a photo for all of you guys to see. Oh yeah, and I set up an awesome tea tray:

All of it was damn awesome.

All of it was damn awesome.

And then began the creation of the “engine” for the game. It’s more of the deep internals than anything, as you can see in the screenshot below. The graphics are really nice, and as you can see I haven’t split the character’s image slices yet. Animation should be simple with a side-library called anim8 however. Since this is the jam I’m confident I’ll be able to get all the features in by the deadline (which is Monday 6pm of course.) The main game elements I hope to have together by the end of tomorrow, and then I hope we piece them together on Sunday and really polish and finish the game on Monday.

I’m in for the first time.

I always watched Ludum Dare with interest, but never had the time to participate. Although I just became father recently, I think I’m going to put something nice together for the compo.

Here is a sneak peak of my main char:

My Tools:

C#/XNA + Paint.Net

I have no idea, if i’ll have enough time to put some sound together.

Let’s rock 😀

do you recognize him?

I’m back in.

After some meditating on the idea, I’ve derided to just make the maps, and fuck random map generation. I’m certainly not hoping to win, just place.

Hurrah, you are the villain!

Urgh… going out last night was not a good idea. Hours wasted, headache the size of a small planetoid.

I’m glad this topic came up, as I’ve recently been watching one of my favourite films. :)

Ivan the Terrible

ivan

I have an idea for a game that involves using your “oprichniki” to seek out rebels prevent a revolution. Basically as time goes on, more and more rebels appear and you must identify the ring leaders and intercept them.

There will be 5 important buildings in the game. A cathedral, fortress, port, factory and bank (better suggestions would be nice!). If rebel influence takes over one, you will need to send oprichniki to take them back.

You have a certain number of oprichniki (police) and you may lose them taking buildings back.

If all 5 buildings are taken over, your corrupt (erm… GLORIOUS!) reign is over.

You basically lose if democracy wins. 😉

I’m in!

Okay, I’m in. I’ll be creating a beat ’em up like game where you control a goat like evil character that beats up civilians in order to get the attention of the heroes so you can fight them and win.

Difficult Theme

In my opinion “you are the villain” is a difficult theme, for the three act story formula doesn’t work. If it’s a “introduction, everything falls apart in the middle, protagonist prevails in the end” kind of thing, then you are not really the villain anymore, but an “evil” hero instead. However, a narrative where everything goes well from beginning to the middle and then falls apart in the end strikes me as rather frustrating. Hmmm, what to do,what to do?

Perhaps it’s better to focus on what kind of game I want to create and what’s possible in the alloted time span.

The first thing that springs to mind is Grand Theft Auto, but something like that is too complicated to realize.

That dungeon game where you had to defeat heroes would be a possibility. Kind of like a reverse tower defense, but apart from the flavour you could easily interchange hero and villain.

Perhaps I could keep the disappointing reverse narrative to stay true to the “you are the villain” theme after all and then make this an 80s style game where it’s about obtaining a high score rather than winning, since the villain has to be overcome by the hero in the end.

Considering how many hours I’ve wasted with analysis-paralysis I might not finish at all…

How about this:

End of the first Day

Sleep time! But first, here’s what I have done so far:

Character Movement

Basic Character Attacking

The ability to import low-res images as levels

Some lousy art

I appear to be making a game about a monster in a dungeon who has to fight off heroes.

Here’s a screenshot!:

Box2d

I’ve broken my own rules in that I’ve decided to use a bit I’ve never used before: Box2D.

In combination with my good, old-fashioned, CinderLib.

ld1212screen1

So. First Screenshot Saturday Screenshot of the day. It’s still pretty basic as I’m still getting used to Box2D, but I’ve got this arrow missile thing, and I can give it a slingshot esque boost, so I’m actually pretty happy with my progress so far.

Good morning!

So You are the Villain. This shouldn’t be so hard. Bank robbery? Planet destroying? So many ideas for this blank window.

LD25_start

Hopefully I will sort it while making basic game core.

Progress Report

Progress report: development is going slowly due to not having everything set up on my machine right (switched to Notepad++ and FireFTP), not having a framework, and trying to allow for an adaptive size (I really want to be able to play the game on my phone). But the basic templates have begun to take shape, and I have the game flow sketched out. Tomorrow I’ll focus on getting it playable. Sunday will be set aside for artwork, content and tweaks.

Enough for tonight

I have my baseline engine up and running at http://friendoftokyo.scriptolo.gy:8080/. Nothing is even close to what it should be like. Hopefully tomorrow morning will see some isometric awesomeness unfold :) good night!

derils first idea

Ok… I was dreaming haw I am surviving end of the world….

I wake up… and become a villain instead!

ok… my first idea…. You are evil goat…! stealing carrots from poor-good farmers!

hm…

/me is away. Brainstorming another idea…

And here’s one I made earlier

thwompbros

I actually made a tiny game earlier this year that qualifies for the theme of ‘you are a the villain’. ‘Super Thwomp Bros.’ was my first time making my own sound effects (with a microphone). Give it a try, it only takes a few seconds to play.

Update #1 – Wow this is going well so far

Heyo heyo heyo.

I’ve made some good progress in the graphical area of my ld entry. Time to outline what the game is going to be 😀

I’ve dubbed this game “What a World.” I’m not sure why though. You play as an anonymous leader of a group of toughnecks trying to make an impact on the world. In a bad way ;D You’ll be able to choose 3 or 4 people for your crack team in the game. Each will have there strong and weak points so you’ll have to choose wisely.

Once you have your team you will be able to do missions to build up influence in the world and to make your crew better. The missions will probably range in awareness. The more the world starts noticing your deeds the harder it’ll get to do missions.

You win when you conquer the world idk maybe.

It should be a nice little game to play. Also, you get some crazy choices for a crew. I may even make it a random selection.

Here is the crew from top left to bottom right: Diggums, Billie, Bones McCoy, Katz, Brutus, Justin, Domnic, and Vel.

When I wake up I’ll be focusing on the main core gameplay aspects. (Mission handling, random attributes, and globals.)

Goodnight everyone!

You are the alien

Love the theme. Unexpected though, but no problems with that as it makes for a more interesting challenge. I’ve started work on my game which is tentatively entitled “Reverse Space Invaders”. You are the alien. Win the game for the alien race.

Will make it in HTML5/JS. Question – can the game be made public while creating it?
