LD27 August 23–26, 2013

Here I come, Ludum Dare!

Here we go.

I spectated the last Ludum Dare and loved it, and since then I’ve always wanted to participate (thanks to Ciprian/Addictgamer) and now I’m going to be! Yay! A little something did happen just last night though. My original plan was to use pygame, which not many people like for optimization reasons (if you’re reading this and plan on using pygame, good on ya!) and thanks to another post on here I discovered my dream game engine, LÖVE. I have experience with programming but have never used Lua before, so I’m going to be somewhat seriously screwing around for the next few hours before the Jam starts. Yay.

Well, here’s my tool plan:

Code: LÖVE/Lua

Graphics: A bit of GIMP or MS Paint

Audio: Audacity and maybe if I get the time a bit of Fruity Loops

and for any of you who are interested,

Streaming: Open Broadcasting Software

Also, I’ll be dedicating my work to two people. Mercedez Anderson, for being the light and meaning in my life, and Robert Hughes, who is having a hard life right now and I want him to know that he’s cared for.

GL HF, and I’m probably going to suck but I’ll try to suck with style,

-IceHusky

Perhaps a jam?

As you may be aware, this is my one-year anniversary of my first Ludum Dare. Each of the past three entries I have made have been competition entries, but there might be a change this time around.

My art has never been good, and I just happened to have found someone willing to do art for me, even though she’ll be at work for a good deal of the weekend. All should be awesome on that front.

On a similar tone, I’ll still be attending Friday Night Magic tonight, which lets me use the time that is Standard Constructed to bounce game ideas off of everyone.

If all fails, I’ll join the LDTP and create a tower potato game, but let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.

We’re…in? At least part way.

I was planning on passing on this Ludum Dare due to other commitments (hold for projectiles) totaling 4 in all, but after reshuffling a few commitments, my team of 3 has decided to give it at least a stab. Won’t be doing the whole 72 hours. In fact, won’t even be doing 48 hours. Probably not even 24 hours. We expect to have at most 20 hours, and more than likely only 16, to make a game.

That’s really not a lot of time, but on the other hand, this will prove to be a valuable experience in the exercise – nay, the art – of thinking small and achievable. If it’s fitting of the theme, I’d like to do something that has extremely short gameplay (ie no “story mode” kind of thing), randomly generated levels, and high score oriented. The kind of thing where you play the game and it lasts 2 minutes, but then you ask yourself, “can I do better?”

I am in!

This will be my first game jam. I am planning to use LWJGL for programming, and I will stream as much development as I can. As I’m from the UK, I won’t be able to join in straight away (the jam begins at 2 AM local time) but I will get on it as soon as I can. Here is my kit:

PC Rig

Intel i5 Ivy Bridge
Corsair Sport RAM
Windows 7 64-bit
IDE: Eclipse
Engine: OpenGL, LWJGL bindings
Audio: as3sfxr, Audacity and MilkyTracker
Graphics editing: GIMP
Straming software: Open Broadcaster Software

Feel free to join me at twitch.tv/sarcasmrules – good luck everyone, and have fun!

Im in

Hey I’m SunnySmiles and i am in.

I am not sure if this is where i’m supposed to post. Come to think of it, i am not really sure about anything involving this crazy compo-thing. But i am definatly in, and i am going to make a game in java. Using a little code i have taken from notch’ open source projects and some boilerplate-stuff i wrote myself. Here is a link to all the stuff i will be starting with: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/goca2nuzj9gy9gi/v2yfXIWb49

Looking forward to doing this.

Tentatively In

I’ve got some things to do Saturday, so that won’t leave much time but I think it would do me good to finish something small for this Ludum Dare, due to not finishing the last few times (since ages since I actually finished something for Ludum).

Not sure what to do it in, depends on the theme and game ideas but the current slightly weird one is to use Doom III engine.

I’m pretty familar with it, as it was the ancestor of Brink engine which I was Lead on for several years and its fully GPL now so open sourced. Full 3D engine, SWF/Flash UI and battle hardened…

Of course sounds bit more of a MOD than a full game, but with full source access, it should be possible to be as different as I like…

Though still not sure if a good idea TBH maybe too big an engine for a short project… grrr some many choices

Workstation?

Here is where I’ll be working, and where I’m normally sat for at least 8 hours every day…

As you can see, I’ve got my webcam set up so you can see not only my screen, but the desk area too! (The TV on the left will be used for the livestream preview and chat, so it’s away from where I’m working)

PS. HELP, I’m so under prepared, I haven’t made a game in ages, and I haven’t had any practice time! But everything should be OK. Also, I reeeeally need to get a mouse mat…

http://twitch.tv/TomboFry is here if you’re interested! Thanks! 😀

Ludum Dare — I’m in (jam)

This will be my first full Ludum Dare event! I was so excited to participate, but then I saw that there was a Star Trek convention near me on Sunday, in addition to a half-day event/obligation on Saturday. Oh well.

I decided that, even if I can’t do the regular compo, maybe I can try doing the Jam with my limited time. I’m excitedly waiting for the Dare to begin.

I’ll be using the Unity3D engine (ever since I discovered it at the beginning of the summer, I have been in love with it), Blender for 3D modeling, GIMP (maybe also MSPaint) for textures, C# and JavaScript for coding (primarily JavaScript), plus Audacity and a microphone for sounds/narration.

I am excited to see how all of your games turn out, in addition to mine. Have fun!

I’m in, for my fourth time!

Hello there ladies & gentlemen.

I’m Midgard, and I’m in (for my fourth time!) the thing is, Ludum Dare comes with lots of fun, so I CAN’T resist to participate.

My last time was with FreeFall, developed in ~24h, just because I changed my idea completelly after the first day, so what happened with FreeFall is that it was really incomplete.

I’ll take my time to plan a good, fun, original idea with the topic of this Ludum Dare edition!

I’ll be streaming, not sure if I will stream all the 48h (of course I will sleep, not so much tho), here’s my Stream for whoever wants to see a noobie-like Unity3D Dev.

What I’m gonna use this time is the following:

Engine: Unity3D.
Language: C#.
IDE: Visual Studio 2012.
Graphics/Texturing: Photoshop.
3D Modelling: Blender.
Food: Whatever, in these 48h I will not really thing in food, MUST DEVELOP!
Drink: Tea, Lots of Water.

So, good luck to everyone, and I hope you guys have fun developing/watching people develop a game in 48h/72h!

Let’s watch magic happen once more time!

I’m in!

Joining as usual, Unity, Blender, GIMP, NeoTextureEdit, BFXR, ShowControls and the like.

Second LD go

Second time I take part in the Ludum Dare, but this time I’m all by myself, yaaay.
Sooo, I’ll probably make something very very very simple and easy to code and concentrate more on the visual part. Game Maker, Photoshop, and for the sound ah ha ha. Haa. No idea yet.
I’m excited but since I just came back from a very tiring trip and haven’t slept much these days, I don’t know if things will go right, but I hope so. May coffee and coke help me as I tread the cruel path of the 48h jam.

Anyway, here I am.

After over a year…

… I’m planning on joining in on LD again! My last LD was LD23 “Tiny World”, back in April 2012. This will be my third foray into Ludum Dare, and indeed, Game Jams in general. My weekend is completely free and, barring any unfortunate, unforeseen events, I should be able to complete a game this weekend for the compo!

This time around, I’m going to try making a game in Unity. I have very little experience with it, so it should be a good learning experience if nothing else. I know Javascript and I work as a software developer, so that shouldn’t be the hard part; the hard part, I believe, will be learning how to leverage Unity’s tools and libraries to make an interesting game.

Tools:

  • Development: Unity 3D
  • Modelling: Blender (or just Unity, depending on time constraints)
  • Graphics: GIMP
  • Music: Audacity + Keyboard/Guitar
  • SFX: SFXR

I’m super excited! My favorite part of LDs in the past was getting to play and provide feedback on all of the wonderful games that come out of the competition. I can’t wait to see what great things you all come up with!

I’m in.

I’m in, using msvc/dx9/paint.net/bfxr, base code is here:

Preperation Rituals

Last night I started getting into Ludum dare mode. I stocked up on easy to consume foods, cut my hair and nails, and did some warm up code. I learned how to work the new animation system that comes with Unity 4. It seemed very intimidating when I first started, but I feel comfortable enough with it now. There were some kinks with the newest version of Blender, but I downloaded an older version and it works fine. I made a very simple 3d humanoid model, skinned it, rigged it, and gave it two animations. The whole process took three hours.

Ludum dare starts at 8:00pm in my time zone. After work I plan to do some more food shopping, take a nap, cut my nails, and hang with you all on the IRC before the start. Here is to another successful Ludum Dare. (Raises a cup of tea towards the screen).

I’m in

Think I’ll be in.

My Idea is to pick up the LD48 theme. Get out of my office, take some fotos inspired by the theme with my nikon d90 and make a game based on the fotos.

Hope this works…

I DON’T KNOW WHAT I’M DOING!

I first heard about Ludum Dare last year some time, and this is my first time giving it a go. Can’t say for certain anything will come from it, I have a very bad reputation for giving up on my projects :(

Engine: Unity

Content creation: Gimp, as3sfxr, OpenMPT, possibly Blender (haven’t decided on 2D or 3D yet…)

“Let the great experiment begin!”

my first time :-)

My Live-Stream-Channel

http://www.twitch.tv/xabyn

Will be enabled just before Ludum Dare starts. Ludum Dara will start in Berlin on Saturday at 3 o’clock am :)

I will use:

– Photoshop CS6, ArtRage 4 for Drawings

– Music Maker Premium 2013 for music, using VST: Chip32, Alpha-Ray 1.6, Keyboard for playing notes, own composings, using the build in drumbox from music maker

– Audition CS6 für Audio-Cutting

– Game Maker Studio, target Platform is Windows, Audio issues under HTML5 :-( (I will have to look up a lot in the help I guess)

– Word for some notes

– if there is much time: Spine for some beautiful animations

– photos taking with Canon EOS 7D (if needed for the idea, I will turn on the webcam, so that you can see, what I am doing)

– Audio recording with Olympus LS-5

wish you a nice Ludum Dare, Folker

My desk is ready for Ludum Dare

So, a quick update I’ve just cleaned my desk and I’ve decided to show my workspace to anyone who is interested. Plus I’ve bought my first ever mechanical keyboard (Razer BlackWindow). YAY!!!

photo

Yup. Thats my desk. So good luck to everyone, and I will see you in 10 hours.

P.S. This keyboard is so good.

My first mechanical keyboard was a BlackWidow also…. and after two months the “A” key stopped working. So since then I’ve just went back to plain old crappy $10 keyboards. (Which, by the way, has lasted me over two years so far) I’ll probably give a Rosewill or Logitech brand mech keyboard in the near future, though.

will not be livestreaming this weekend

I got insta-banned from Twitch.tv – for – (wait for it) – logging into my account using Tor!

I’m such a horrible person, aren’t I? Anonymizing my IP address…

I know this because I did so last night to check up on things and to get ready for the weekend. As soon as I logged in, there was a little banner pop-up saying that I’d been sent a verification e-mail. I go get the verification e-mail, click the link verify my account. All is well, right? Wrong. About a minute later my entire session is replaced with a little “You have been banned” message on an otherwise blank page. So, I guess I won’t be streaming using Twitch this weekend.

I’ve seen some (understandably) cautious behavior from sites like Facebook asking me security questions when I would appear to be logging in from another country. I’ve gotten the passive aggressive silent treatment from Youtube not playing any videos (which is really more of a technical problem of some videos not being encoded for tor-friendly streaming). I have never before gotten outright hostility such as this.

Leaving my tinfoil hat off with regard to this, but suffice to say, the site no longer adequately meets my requirements for security and privacy.

tl;dr – screw Twitch.tv.

I’ll use autoscreenshot or something to grab screenies every 10-15 seconds or so and make a video from that.

Well that sounds ridiculous… best of luck!
