Game Maker Extensions: Achievements and Message Boxes

Hey fellow GM users!

I’ve made a few extensions in Game Maker that you might want for your game! I’ve made one for Achievements and custom message dialogs. Both extensions are constructed of nothing but pure GML and can be implemented very quickly and simply into a game.

For more information on how to use these extensions as well as the changelogs check out my GMC topics:

Achievements
Message Boxes

I had a blast making these so I hope they’ll be useful. Just trying to give back to this awesome community! Enjoy!

Have a nice day!
M

DOWNLOADS:

Achievements.gml Achievements.zip
Messages.gml Messages.zip

The GML files include all the necessary scripts for those extensions.
The ZIP files include an editable example in addition to the scripts.

Get ready

My humble workplace. PC, speakers, pen and some stuff for inspiration.

Doesn’t Phil loose some of his super powers when he doesn’t have the Fez?

Why isn’t Phil Fish the LD Sub Theme?

Round 1 – 4 results

I’ve thrown together a graph which shows the results of the first 4 rounds.  Green is +1, yellow is +0, red is -1.  All ordered by the score:

I’m in!

Another fine LD compo weekend is upon us. :)

Monkey for code, Truespace / Photopaint for graphics,  Orion Pro / SFXR for audio.

Probably target html5 canvas,  glfw for windows and android.

cheers!

Round 2

This will be my second Ludum Dare and I’m very excited. I just purchased a Mac which I’ve been using all of two days so we’ll see how that goes. Last time I used LWJGL, which was great since I only needed to draw circles and lines. My last LD game took a turn for failure when I started maintaining pretty monstrous code to deal with the mechanic I was trying to create. I hope to make this year different.

TOOLS:

Engine: Unity3D
Language
: C#
IDE: MonoDevelop
Librarys: RagePixel
Music and sound: SFXR
Graphics: RagePixel

Unlike last year this LD I’ll be coming straight off of working for 8 hours, so it’ll be interesting seeing if I get any work done tonight or if I just go to sleep. Hope we can all create awesome things this weekend, and I look forward to playing what you all make :)

I’m in (but I doubt I can be as awesome as last time)!

Same as usual, C# using monogame since I may have a couple little plans this weekend in preparation for uni. I have become much, much better at C/C++ during the 6 weeks I’ve worked at ARM so far, but I’m just gonna stick to something simpler that I can write code in faster. Music will be some horrible mash-up using TS404 and musagi, probably. I dunno, I’m never good with the audio stuff.

Oh, and on another super awesome note: My game which came 21st overall last time, They Don’t Stop Coming, has been featured in the latest PCGamer issue which arrived today for subscribers like me! Here’s a really bad quality photo (taken with 3DS camera):

Done with cleaning…

So my desk is ready for the challenge. I’m not really though – need some sleep.

Demos to watch (at least) for some creativity:

ASD – Happiness Is Around The Bend
CNCD & Fairlight – Ceasefire
Still – Square
ASD – The butterfly effect
Haujobb – You Should

(insert any of your favorites here… :) )

Love your setup. Especially how your amplifier just fits right into that slot.

Cant Wait!

Really looking forward to the Ludum Dare Compo, it’ll be my first go at it! Ill be using either basic Unity3D, or flash Pro CS6, and will be creating a new code library from scratch. I wish everyone luck and i’m looking forward to seeing other peoples innovations!

any by scratch i mean the basic library that comes with either engine!

Obligitory Desk Shot

We all know I have to post a picture of my desk at some point, but I’m too lazy to go get the camera and have to transfer the photo. Plus, right now it doesn’t exactly deserve a picture, I should probably hide it from you guys…

I know. If I juryrig a mirror, in front of the computer, I can use it to take the picture with the computer camera, then no cable-finding required.

Now how large does the mirror have to be? Judging by the FOV of the iMac’s camera, and the distance I’d need to hold it to capture my whole desk, it’ll have to be about 3′ wide. Maybe I could use lenses and a curved mirror?

You know what, I’m gonna go get the camera.

Woops, in !

YISS

Third LD. Let’s do this.

I’ll use Flash as always (except if I play it yolo and go Unity even though I’m not confident in my skills with it. At all.), plus Photoshop if needed. Music ? Sound ? Fuck.
Sorry I’m being crude.
And as always, teacoffeefriendsandloudmusic.

Now for something totally different (well not totally), I just uploaded a more polished version of my LD26 game, The Minimalism Quest, on Newgrounds and Kongregate. Fyi.

Good luck y’all, see you in 11 hours !

I’m in!

So it’s almost time for LD27!

I’m using my own codebase as per usual, which you can grab here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4826080/LD27%20Base.zip

My codebase consists of OpenGL, GLM and SFML, with a bunch of OpenGL wrapper/utility classes.

My IDE of choice is Code::Blocks.

For graphics I’ll be using GIMP and for audio I’ll be using sfxr/Audacity.

I’m hoping to break out of my physics-based pattern I’ve established with recent LD’s, but no promises!

Fully prepared now, just need to keep practising

I have written out game ideas and names for each of the 20 themes in the final round of voting, and will select the appropriate one when the theme is announced.

All that is left to do is practice programming potential features I can implement and ensure that I meet as few problems as possible.

How can I not be in?!

Here is my mandatory “I’m in” post. It is my 4th LD48 and I don’t know what could happen to not let me participate in this or any further LD48s! Since last year LD48s is most most important milestones in my game developer’s development. I’m looking forward to see what I will make in next two days. It is soooo cool! Right now I don’t have any idea about what will it be! And just in two days it will be something. So exitet!

What about my tools? This year I spent a lot of time with Java. And I like it very much. I made several prototypes with LWJGL but… In this LD I’ll still use ActionScript on Flash platform. There is several reasons for it: it’s much easier to deliver game to players via browser. Yes, I could make an applet, but Flash is much lighter. Also API for sound is much easier in Flash. So I think I can work much faster with  Flash and time does matters in Ludum Dare. So. Here it is:

  • ActionScript3.0 + Flash platform
  • Flash Develop as IDE
  • Starling Framework as graphics engine
  • inudge.net – Nudge is really nice little tool to create some music loops!
  • Audacity – is really powerful sound editor and it is totaly FREE!
  • Maybe I’ll use as3sfxr to generate some sounds if 8bit sound will be suitable in my game
  • If not, I’ll try to make something with FL Studio.

Well. Pretty much this is it. Getting ready to have a good sleep this night. Will buy some more coca-cola and coffe to stimulate my brain.

It’s going to be really fun! As usual.

I will also be Ludum Daring

It’s been a while since my last jam, but now I’m back and ready for more.

Probable tools:

  • Flash + Flixel + FlashDevelop for making things do
  • Paint for making things look
  • Microphone for making things sound
  • A whole bunch of tea for making me not stop

You can check out my automagically updating page here: Ludum Dare #27

Protip: It mostly consists of “I have no idea how to make a game from this theme” followed by “I have no idea how I’m going to finish this in time”…

Garrett Mickley Reporting For Duty

I will be participating in my first Ludum Dare (second game jam altogether, though I will be trying for the compo side of this).

I will be using:

  • Construct 2 engine
  • Photoshop CS6
  • Logic Pro with different Native Instruments plugins. Will not be streamed due to having to use a different computer.

Pretty sure I won’t need anything other than that.

I will be liveblogging at GarrettMickley.tumblr.com which also posts to my @GarrettMickley twitter.  Those are the two best places to find me.

My twitch.tv account is http://www.twitch.tv/garrettmickley which you can go follow now (if you like) to get notified of when I go live.

Thanks for your interest and most of all GL;HF to all my fellow LD’s!

[Edit] I’d also like to point out that my game will be in browsers, but I will most likely have downloads for Windows, Mac, and Linux as well.  If the game turns out pretty cool, then further development will be made and eventually a possible release on mobile, OUYA, and Wii U as well (but that’s just dreaming of the future at this point).

I’m in

This is my I’m in post. Exciting stuff!

Programming: Gamemaker

Music/sound: Sony vegas/musagi

Back again for the second time.

I’m joining this weekend’s Ludum Dare competition. This is my second try at the comp. I hope to get a better score than I did last year. Here is what I’m using:

Programming:

Java with the Eclipse IDE. Also using a library I wrote called Macmilib which is at the bottom of the post.

Art:

GIMP for graphics and Graphics Gale for animation.

Music:

Fruity Loops Studio, Audacity and SFXR. (Maybe Musagi aswell).

Macmilib can be found here (because of the rules):

Macmilib

Currently there is no documentation for it. It has things like a software-based 3D renderer which is soon to include CUDA for hardware accelaration. It will include things like 3D sound and things like that after the LD.

I’m in!

I’m in for the first time, getting more excited by the minute! I’ll be using Flash as I feel most comfortable creating things fast with it.

So: Flash Pro CS5.5 + Gimp + Bfxr.
Code will be made all from scratch, except for a small, sleek Keyboard-Control lib (Input.as) by Matthew Bush (sourceforge.net/projects/box2dflash/).

Good luck and lots of fun everyone!
