Please tell me you do this too so I don’t feel that guilty :/
This is a nice time to start for China’s time zone, 9am and ready to go. Brainstorming about “10 seconds” and then I expect to spend the day coding.
I’ll be going the HTML5 route and using…
Not the fanciest setup but it will work for what will be my first Ludum Dare. Good luck to everyone.
My first time and I’m gonna think about my idea for the game as i wont have as much time as i would over the weekend to actually do this. So i wont be able to start for another 14hrs at least
. Hopefully my game can be simplistic to make but have something that’s a different approach to the theme that others won’t have… hopefully
So I finished my game in record time. It’s a race against the clock!
If you stopped at exactly ten seconds you win!
Now for making a ‘real’ game….
This is my first LD, and it comes at a time where I am very busy, but I’m going to see if I can come up with something basic but workable (maybe even interesting) in the allotted time; we’ll see how it goes – first I have to come up with something for 10 seconds…
Hey all, I have already chosen and fleshed out my idea based on the theme. I had a lot of help from my friend, Reece, who I’m very thankful to.
I have decided to go for an isometric, dungeon-crawler-ish game where the player begins with 10 seconds, and must collect little items to get more time. The objective is to find the exit without running out of time.
There are enemies that take time away from you when you are hit by them, and there are some weapons you can pick up, but the ammo is your time. Enemies sometimes drop time, but is it a good idea to shoot them when there could potentially be no drop? The idea is to make the player think about murdering everything in sight. So far I’ve sorted out the isometric viewpoint, and next I will begin on the time drops and the enemies. Then I will begin on environments. Art and models will come after everything programming and functional side is complete.
I don’t have any yet!
But game jamming with other people is fun!
2:00 am here. Let’s go. Planning on using Unity and whatever else i can find. First time Ludum Dare. Good luck.
Entering in my first Ludum Dare competition. Hope a nice weekend for all.
Code: XNA/Visual Studio
Art: Paint.Net
SoundEffects: sfxr
Alright, I gotta say it’s not my favorite theme because I think we’re going to see a hundred McPixel clones, but you could all prove me wrong, and then I’ll be all stupidy so and so for saying it. Okay, let’s do this! I’m game. Gonna find that box, think out of it, and then smash it with a wrench and set it on fire. Then gonna grab another box, say from some homeless dude, and burn that box too. I mean I’ll make sure it’s empty first, I’m no murderer. But all boxes must burn! BURN!! Sorry I burned your house, dude.
After waking my girlfriend up at 3 in the morning to get the theme, it would be a shame not to be in!
I told my brother-in-law “if the winning theme is ’10 Seconds,’ I want to do some sort of trivial fighting game.”
So…here we are, and I’m trying to think of the best sort of fighting game mechanics that could be crammed into a ten-second round.

Divekick‘s rounds are twenty seconds long, and I think it would still be pretty fun if they were only ten seconds long.
Decisions…
First things first: Despite working on my own, I’m doing the Jam, not the Compo. I’d just much rather make use of all the nice stuff one can find on OpenGameArt than spend hours coming up with my own shoddy placeholders. I might still compose my own music, since I like to think I’m pretty decent at that, but I’ll leave that until last and only do it if I have enough time.
Also, I already have an idea, and a descriptive title for it: Telepath Speed Chess. You can probably guess that this means each chess player has ten seconds to move. The interesting part is going to be coding an AI that thinks ‘slowly’ to put the human player on a fair footing; Telepath refers to the fact that the game will display insights into the AI’s thought process.
I’m not sure that was the clearest of descriptions, but you’ll see soon enough. I’m also not sure if this game will be all that fun, but well, I won’t know until I try it. Time to get to work!
Better late than never I suppose. First Ludum Dare, or game jam of any kind.
Tools to be used:
Unity3D
Paint.NET
BFXR
I’ve decided, I’m going to be making a game called Rebound Recon. I was going to call it Rebound Rendezvous or Rebound Reconnaissance but I realized that it will never be spelled consistently, even by me.
The idea is that you’re piloting a sort of scouting drone, a remote-controlled balloon filled with air that can release air to change its direction. However, you must plot its course such that it completes each level in ten seconds, before the security forces manage to close in and capture the drone and the sensitive information it has extracted. The good news is you have powerful computers at your disposal that can exactly calculate what the trajectory of the balloon is going to be before you commit to it. I’ve got a basic idea of the components, the UI, and what needs to be done.
This will be the first time I’ve used JSON tile-based levels in an HTML5 game, so that will be interesting. Hopefully there won’t be too many nasty surprises.
Running into problems at the start doesn’t bode particularly well for the rest of the competition…
My previous Gosu project solution used MS VC 2008. Due to the fact 2010 is leagues better as an IDE, I wanted to upgrade to that.
However I ran into dreaded linker errors.
Porting the code I just wrote to 2008 apparently fixes said issues.
Given the time constraints, I think I’ll just bite the bullet. I’ll go for some chocolate and drink during the excessive build times.
I have however got “something” up and running. That is, I got a window to show using Gosu, I now just need to get an image on there.
10 seconds…. Huh. I think everyone and their uncles are going to be making games of very short, very stressful WarioWare style 10 second mini games. Perhaps platformers where each small level must be completed in 10 seconds.
I don’t want to impose some 10 second time limit on an otherwise regular game. I want the period of “10 seconds” to be a defining characteristic of the mechanics of my game
40 minutes in and I think I have a neat idea. Cool.
Good luck to us all
