You only get one! (match)

It was hard but it’s done. Our first game in ludum dare. Enjoy!

PostMortem Guilt

So,
I just submitted my game, and I’m not proud of it-at all.  I didn’t even come close to finishing and sloppily smashed something barely playable together.
Ok…So this was my first Ludum Dare (definitely not my last, I had a lot of fun). Now, before someone plays this terrible abomination, I must explain some things haha…

This game was going to be “You only get one enemy” the catch was that each time you played the game he had a different weakness and you had to run around this test facility to see what hurt him. I made a lot of mistakes, mainly due to making too ambitious of a project, getting heavily distracted, and learning tools the day of.

You know what, though? I turned something in…

What worked?
>Random Weaknesses are chosen at each start (I only enabled rubber)
>AI Pathfinding
>Audio Syncing
>Buttons that work on multiple events
What didn’t work?
>He would glitch out when walking.
>No model.
>One level (The test level)
>Didn’t include half the things I wanted included.

I learned to be prepared, stay focused, and aim towards a logical goal.

Out of my guilt I am going to attempt to make a game in the final hour of the competition.

We’re done!!! “Darkest Friday” is ready to play. :D

Phew! We’re finally done with our game “Darkest Friday” in record time! Even though half of us were out of commission for half of the weekend (hence a slight holding back on the art side for our game), we finished our game early and with low amounts of stress to get things done. We hope you enjoy! And now….LET’S GO RATE GAMES! \o/

A Jedi’s resolve…

I’ve lost a LOT of time and who-knows what else. This is what I’ve been dealing with:

sad1very sad

In case you can’t see, one of my hard drives is FUBAR and my development system won’t boot. The good news is that my code is safe. The bad news is that there’s no way I’m getting to it before the jam deadline.

BUT I REFUSE TO GIVE UP!

I’ve re-retooled my (real-life) game to be a lot simpler, and I plan to just play it and post a video of me playing it. Kinda lame but not as bad as an “I’m out.”

Finally got the time to post ! Game finished !

screenshot_04Hello everyone !

what an incredible LD ! the theme was very inspiring for me and i got multiple ideas for it. Most of them finish in the actual game who is a mash-up of all the ideas i found fun (except the on chance dating sim, don’t find how/don’t had time to add it ).

It’s the first Ludum Dare i made with a friend, and i’m really happy of our collaboration and result!

first the game : http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-28/?action=preview&uid=5284

it’s a mash-up of Survivor, Battle Royal and a lot of WTF. i planned to use Unity like everytime but i had construct 2 opened and say “hey! why not?” it’s the first game i make with it, so i spend quite some time learning it, a post mortem could be interesting on that part.

I think it’s the most fun entry i made so far and as always with no sound because i know that nobody like sound, we can’t even see it ! yeah, sound is stupid.

Short post because it’s 1h30 in france, and i’m working tomorrow. I’ll spend more time to talk with you later !

Alas.

I wish the Jam was 4 days long.

Ah well.  Better luck next time.

Magpie is as finished as we could get it in this weekend!

Give it a shot here!

Can’t wait to try out your games, and good luck to those who are still finishing up!

man, i think i could talk for about 20 minutes straight; just about the reasons why i dont like how this turned out, and why i considered not uploading it. letting it just serve as a personal lesson to myself about “things not to do next time”

the art turned out pretty cool, the animations too. if you play my game, focus on that 😛

[ pictured above: me leading a big dude into a pack of smaller dudes with a trail of reeds. i wanted the game to be more about these kind of antics, but didnt have enough time to implement more systems and creature types ]

My first LD game is up!

After a lot of effort, headaches, soups, interference by life, menial programming and fun filled story writing, I have finally completed my game to an extent with which i’m not too sad about. It’s a text adventure that’s about the one death that you get in life. It has some moral choices, and multiple endings, and maybe a story hidden somewhere too. But i’m too tired to know if it’s any good. So check it out. I hope you find it engaging.

You Only Die Once

Job completed

I’m just finished my entry. It’s name is “You can only get peace”, and you can check  it here. The work was mostly done on today, started at about 8 am local time, and finished around 1 also am :).  Plenty of  things remained on my todo list, and much more ideas how to improve  the game, but time heaven’t. I’m realy enjoyd reading others post, and watching streams while I’m takeing a break.

Best wishes to all of you for the contest!

CHOOSE W1SELY – Post Mortem

Well, it’s been a day since my game was released and I’d like to talk about what I think came out well.

#gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */ Placeholder graphics Placeholder graphics End of First Day End of First Day

What went well:

  • Graphics (See above) were done especially early and came out looking very nicely
  • Sound effects all came out wonderfully
  • Extra time for an intro and some endings
  • Came out with a finished, playable game
  • Theme was done in a creative, original way

What didn’t go well:

  • Music was made with a randomizer. (Although the reviewers seemed to like it)
  • I wanted to add two more levels (The game has one)
  • Tons of abilities were scrapped due to there being now way to implement them,  no good way to use them in the level, or just a lack of knowledge on how to make them
  • The boss is (in my opinion) incredibly boring

Simple Ships – Ludum Dare #28 Jam Entry

This is a simple game where you have to avoid meteors.
When you download, open it up, and press A to change selection, and SPACE to confirm selection. Go to the ABOUT section In-Game for more info.
This was meant for the compo, but I ended up spending the first day planning and brainstorming loads of other game ideas as well as this one. Next time will do for compo.
For the people who cant use the ABOUT part in the menu, here is what it says:

“Simple Ships Version 1
Made By Luke Ramsden for LudumDare #28 Jam.
Controls:

In the Menu:
:A to change selection
:SPACE to confirm selectio
In Game:
:A to change direction of the Ship

You may distribute for other to play, IF you give the creator(Luke Ramsden) the proper credit needed, but you may not distribute it or
its code as your own.

Enjoy,
Luke”
SCREENSHOTS:

Game Dead Menu
Please enjoy my game,
Have fun,
Love you all,
Luke

EDIT: I have made some changes in the final minutes, enjoy them:

  • Better Graphics
  • Code Optimized
  • The Game gets harder as you get a better score (Score is based on time played without dying)
  • Changed Selection Method

PS: Some people are having trouble using the ABOUT button in the menu. I have narrowed it down to these reasons:

  • You have un-installed Notepad
  • You have an outdated version of Java
  • You have an outdated version of Windows (PRE-WIN7)

These could apply to anyone, so make sure to try to fix it, because it could affect other things as well as my game.

Enjoy

One Outcome (is all you get)

And we’re done!
In good time.

Again, not much love for the theme, but we came up with an idea and more or less managed to get it turn out as imagined.
Mostly this was an opportunity for us to test out dialogues and the new 2D functionality of Unity, both of which we’ll need for an upcoming project.

I won’t be talking much about the game, it’s fairly short and simple (even though it took the two of us most of the past three days), and to disclose anything would just ruin it. However if you care to, play it here

:)

Done! Wow…

First time participating in LudumDare.

Those were some intense 72 hours with only very little sleep. So happy that we got it finished in time even though we had to kill a lot of the planned features.

Looking forward to play some of the other games now. =]

ESCAPE FROM PRISON!!!!!

It’s done!

GAME LINK http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/705999/escape/index.html

JAM LINK http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-28/?action=preview&uid=31358

ESCAPE FROM PRISON is a procedurally generated prison escape game. Evade guards, shank other prisoners to start a riot, scout the area and escape!!!!

I learned a LOT on this Ludum Dare and had a ton of fun doing it. Looking forward to the next one!

Getting more publicity

Now that the weekend is over it’s the time where people vote on each others games and try to be nice about the fact that someone made yet another impossible platformer which has barely anything to do with the theme.

I try to comment on every game I’ve played. I say what I like, what I don’t like as much… I think that’s about it. I dunno I feel as if these comments kinda help, and are encouraging for a hobbyist game developer. On the other hand I did see a lot of “UR GAME SUX AND IS BAD TOO” which is really bad. I try to be nice with my comments. Maybe if something really frustrated me I..maybe slip something passive aggressive in but it’s accidental I promise!

Anyway, the idea in this phase of Ludum Dare is to keep your “default” low. You can do that by reviewing/voting compo/jam games. Some people say that this is the fun part of Ludum Dare. I’m not sure what to think.

Anyway, ludum dare isn’t the only place you can promote your game. You should be proud of what you’ve made and shout from the mountaintops about the wonderfulness of your videogame that you made in 2 (or 3 if you did the Jam rather than the Compo) days. That’s why I’m also promoting my videogame on twitter. For example this is a tweet I just done did at Eminem:

Dear @Eminem I made a videogame where you rap with cool rappers like @macklemore and @vanillaice. plz RT http://t.co/HQ6xuyGfKg

I hope this works :)

Halflemon Studios’ first game complete

We’ve just finished our first game as a studios and I’m happy about it. The game is a puzzle-y platformer with the slight backstory of an electrician chasing vandals (puns tailored to this situation).

Our art guy decided to work with MS Paint all the way and I’m not sure about the responses it’ll get but eh, it does have an unique look to it :)

We did some programming beforehand but apparently this is not enough. It’s either we made the game a bit too complicated to code or we just did not make enough interfaces and such. There should be a collision system in place before we start working next time as it took way too long and it needed way too many fixes along the way.

If anyone’s interested, a link to the game is here: Play Cable!

Collision detection is a bit iffy at rare times but it’s working. If you can narrow down specific cases of getting stuck (preeeetty unlikely as we’ve done extensive testing) feel free to tell us.

Oh, also:

Look out for him! (hint: level 15)

Good to see someone else supporting the ‘Bieber 4Evar <3' cause! :')

Except that mine is an insanely small easter egg involving pressing his initials at the menu.

Finally, we made it!

First Ludm Dare for us, and it was really fun!

We did not have enough time to finish the second level, but the first one is really great! (yes it is! that’s my game, i love my game :D)

I hope you’ll like it as much as we have fun to made it!

Thanks for this great event!

Have fun here.

guess what?….

After completely throwing in the towel last night at midnight after losing my entire project… I am back.

This evening after work I opened up the remnants of my project and began to put it back together from scratch. My plan was to gradually bring it up to scratch for the next few nights… It got to 11 and I was very close to finishing it!

so I rushed in some audio and BAM! I have a candidate to submit!

doing so now!

Thanks to everyone for the support and kindess when all was lost. I didn’t make it for the challenge but at least I was able to submit for the jam. :)

I am about to start uploading my entry. “Our Final Chance!”
