LD28 December 13–16, 2013

My first MiniLD

Hey everyone, first time LDer here. I tried once in the past, unsuccessfully, to take part in a Ludum Dare, so I hope this MiniLD goes better! I do have to work today, Saturday, and Sunday so it will be more of a 72 hour event for me because I’ll be spending a full day at work. So I’ll be just getting started now (before work) and ending on Sunday night. I saw the themes on Wednesday and came up with a game idea pretty quickly. I had been thinking about a game I saw in the last LD (on IndieImpressions on YouTube called Seed) and what I would have done differently with that very interesting concept. I kind of meshed the basic premise of that with a Flash game I know of called Infectionator to come up with the idea for Overthrow, my LD game.

Overthrow will be a game about starting a coup and taking over the kings throne. The story of it really won’t be very intricate as it will play more like a puzzle game. You’ll have a bunch of units on screen and you can choose which one will start the coup. The units color will change indicating it has switched to your side. From there the game is automated so selecting the right individual (or maybe individuals) will be the key to passing each level. Units will all be located on a grid, each unit will have different attack ranges and some will have different abilities. If a unit is killed within a certain range of other units, the other units will either become enraged/run/convert based on which unit it is. After selecting your coup leaders and starting the level, the loyalists will not expect your coup and your players will get one free attack, from here the loyalists will attack your units while kill effects happen and change the alliances (affecting your units as well as the enemies). In this way planning out the way a battle will go beforehand (or scheming in my mind) will be a major mechanic of the game.

Finally this is how I’m making it:

Engine: Axel Game Engine (Stage3D flash library based on Flixel)
Graphics:Photoshop and my new Wacom Tablet (I’m very excited about).
Sound: bfxr (super quick and easy to use).
Other: Dame (Deadly alien map editor) for creating each level.

Good luck everyone! Follow me on Twitter (@neipo13) for more constant updates/screenshots/sketches etc and I’ll be sure to post here daily with larger updates!

The chances of me being in are (55 / (3.1415962 * 180) – 22 + Sqrt(555)) * 100%

Well, I’ve been in about 4 Ludum Dares and am still hungry for more. This time I’ll be using :

-Blitzmax + Minib3d

-Aseprite

-PXtone

-Sfxr

-My own custom tilemap editor (http://www.blitzbasic.com/Community/posts.php?topic=101901)

I have no idea what I’m going to be doing, so I may use some different tools as well.

And incorporating one of the themes will be kind of difficult.

1.6556992231 is a very small chance!

We are in, again!

After finishing our first game every last month, we are officially IN for this new challenge! We will start Saturday morning (GMT +1) and will hopefully finish something a little more polished than our last game, Yuzaro. :)

Can’t wait to play all your games!

Oh, we are using:

  • GameMaker Studio
  • BFXR
  • Audacity (maybe)
  • Pickle
  • GIMP (maybe)
  • “Chirp” by the wonderful @rezoner (maybe)

Cheers, Marcus & Nora
TEAM KUTULLU

I’m in!

I’m in for MiniLD 28!

My tool set will be:

Language : As3 / C#
Engine : Flashpunk or XNA / MonoGame
Art : Flash or ASEprite
Music : PXtone
Level Editor : Ogmo Editor

I’ve been dabbling in a lot of XNA recently, but I don’t think I’m ready to use it for this compo. I may create a post compo version in XNA though. I actually started a flash game today, but held it for MiniLD — There was no way to import “Conspiracy” into it.
Have fun!

Thank you, Ludum Dare

I want to use this post to thank everyone behind the Ludum Dare website.

Ludum Dare has inspired me to step it up and start making games that people can play.

Ludum Dare has helped me realize who I am as a game developer, what I am capable of, and how to work on a game with a team.

Ludum Dare is what inspired me and my friends to start Lonebot. If it wasn’t for Ludum Dare, Lonebot wouldn’t exist.

Every Ludum Dare poses refreshing challenges and risks, that often result in creative submissions with innovation involved.

The best part about Ludum Dare (in my opinion) – the “no prize” ideology. The prize you get is the game you made, the lessons you learnt, the fun you had. Everyone who participates in Ludum Dare is a winner.

So thank you, Ludum Dare!

Starting my first game for ludum dare, I’m in it!

Hi to all members,

This will be my first ludum dare entry ever. I thought it would be a good idea to start of with a mini challenge.

I some years of experience in java and 3d gaming, there for I can’t wait to get started.

I thought hard and long about the theme and honestly this is not easy…, but I think I have a good idea in mind.

Only started a bit late after a long day at work.

About the development process:

  1. 3D Engine, I will be using my old faithful, jMonkeyEngine3.0.
  2. For the models I will be using Blender3D.
  3. Graphics and painting I will be using Gimp(I am a novice user here).
  4. Sounds I will be using,…mmm, don’t really know yet.
  5. Because this is my first attempt I will be making use of some free resources.

Well, that is it for now, GOOD LUCK to all contenders…

Enjoy

tGiant signing out….

Not sure when to start, super excited.

I’m so ready for this MiniLD, being my first, I’m not sure when the best time to start is. If starting now is okay in the rules (1/10/14 2:00 pm US:EST) please let me know! Because I don’t know how much longer I can wait!

I’m making this game from scratch so the tools are kinda slim:

– Engine: Good ‘ol Java (Standard Library and an a few game making APIs I’ve created in the past, nothing special)

– IDE: Eclipse, or possibly SublimeText, or Notepad++ if I’m feeling frisky.

– Graphics: 2D, using Paint.NET

– Sound: sfxr

I’m gonna love making this game, I’ve got my idea all planned out, I just need a catchy name, and to put the gameplay mechanics into writing.

Best of luck to all!

Alright. I may as well shoot for later tonight then. c:

My first Ludum Dare entry.

Yeah, so this is my first entry to any Ludum Dare competition. I’m really exited to see what it’s like to participate to Ludum Dare. :) I think it might be probably better for me to start with miniLD before the big Ludum Dare competition. 😀 Starting on Friday night. I’m on GMT +2.

I’m using Java with Slick2d library and probably GIMP for graphics.

[MiniLD #48] I’m in.

I had a great time with LD #28, although I made a few amateur mistakes since it was my first ludum dare and in fact, my first ever public released game. so I’m gonna chill and do LD48. :3

I’m going to be using:

– Game Maker 8.0
– Audacity
– Fruityloops 10
– Photoshop

I’m not sure on the theme yet, but it might be 3D.

In for Mini-LD #48

Going to be using Javascript in lieu of my usual Gamemaker. Don’t expect too much, but I’ll try to get something done before the deadline.

Other tools:
Mspaint (Graphics)

SFXR (Sounds)

Anvil Studio (Music)

Notepad++ (Programming)

I’m not sure about when this thing officially starts, the post gave a date but not a time. So, I’ll just start right now.

I’m making some sort of Wolfenstein clone…I still have no idea what this will do with the theme, but I have all the essentials here. By essentials I mean walking and shooting. Anyways, I think I might go for a fancy hotel/mansion setting. Anyways, up next I’ll do floors and ceilings (yaaaaay…)

We are gonna Bash some Bad Bricks!

We’re are in, me and some friends.

We’re going for a mason trying to cure buildings’ facades from rogue bricks conspiring to make the whole place crumble to dust.

Today we’ve mostly been working on mechanics of central game objects in Unity3D.

I was stumped for the longest time of how to have a world object track the mouse position (x, y) on screen at a certain z. Until we found:

earPlane.Raycast(ray, out planeDistance)

And that was all. A plane to raycast and check how far the ray from the camera.ScreenPointToRay had to travel to hit the plane and it was done!

Personal goals this with this Ludum

  • Make good controls. The past two entries of mine here had serious issues with controls. Since this will be a mouse controlled game with static camera, I’ll be damned if I don’t get the controls right.
  • Juice it or die. I’m hoping to cram as many camera, sound, visual effects in as it is humanly possible (for us).
  • Gifs Each post must have one.

Now, I don’t have so much to show for visual progress, but today’s gif shows my devel-sceen spawning bricks at a location. The little cube that follows the mouse pointer (that you don’t see). It also has the audio listener on it so the player can listen in on what the conspiring bricks are whispering about:

The minimum goal for tomorrow is to complete the game mechanics and at least have a first playable level.

Post-comp version of 10 Second Defence

My LD 27 entry, the text adventure game 10 Second Defence, is now available in a far more polished and beta-tested version here.

The plot and general scope of the game is the same as in the jam version, but I have improved the implementation a fair bit and added some alternative solutions. Feel free to check it out.

A lot of credit goes to my beta-testers.

My progress after 7 hours of programming.

UI done.

Dialog system done.

Characters designed.

First scene finished.

Will finished the battle part hopefully soon so I can tempt you guys to test it for me 😉

Let’s try MiniLD #48

This is yet another I’m in post.

I will use the following tools:

  • Geany for C development
  • GTK+ 3, Clutter, and Cairo for the UI
  • sfxr/bfxr for the sound effects
  • Inkscape for vector graphics

Let’s see what I can do in 48 hours, hopefully I’ll manage to do  8 hours of development, which should be enough for a prototype.
