I’m in for MiniLD!

This might sound like a crazy conspiracy theory, but what if the world’s most popular search engine is actually a rogue AI involved in a scheme to take over the world by subtly influencing people’s search results?

Monitor

I’m making this game of indirect world domination using HTML+JS, with Pixelmator for graphics, and a combination of Bfxr, Audacity, and Garageband for sound. Hopefully I’ll manage to make some actual background music this time.

Going to MiniLD (Hopefully)

Hmmmm, facade, scheme, conspiracy and deceit. I’m not sure if I can have the full weekend and maybe I could probably have 6 hours today at least. What I will try to do this time is to focus on art as I got a very low score with artwork in my last ludumdare game.

Also, the theme is a little bit difficult for a small game. But my time is very limited so I’ll just go ahead and make what is possible.

I have an idea for the game where you’re working for NSA and you have to find “terrorists”.

Probably counts as a conspiracy.

I’m going to use Flash CS6 and Action Script 3.0

Joining in MiniLD this month. Working with a Mystery Man who shall not be named. Good luck everyone and may the force be with you. Also, my   timezone is MST.

Comparitive Results Analysis and I’m in for MiniLD48!

Yes, yet another results post. I feel that I need to. Sorry. Without further ado, the comparative graphs of my LD27 game “Run, Bun, Run!” and my LD28 game “Of Life And Death”:

chart_2(1)

Scores in each category

chart_1(1)

Percentiles of the rank in each category

Both were Jam entries, both made with a team (although different ones). The causes for the major changes are pretty clear. The second game was much darker, whereas the first was very cheery and “kawaii”, which accounts for the spike in Mood and the drop in Humor. There was also a change in team. In the first game, there was me, a programmer, my friend Arielle on art, and her friend Erik on music. We were all really good at our respective jobs, and therefore everything went smoothly. On the second game, the plan was for it to be me and my other friend Adam splitting programming, and Arielle on art again. However, she had to drop out because of schoolwork, leaving me to do the art, something that I’m not superb at. Thus, our Graphics score suffered. We also didn’t have a musician, so Adam put together a chiptune-y piece. While I thought it was pretty good, it didn’t score nearly as well as Erik’s live music, resulting in a huge drop in Audio, formerly our highest category.

Apropos to all that, I’m in for MiniLD48! I have an idea that I’ve been thinking about for a few days, and hopefully it’ll turn out well. This’ll be my first LD or MiniLD on my own, as it doesn’t require any art.

I’m in!!

I’ve never been entered any Ludum Dare. Or mini LD.

The team is me and my girlfriend. She wants to be an artist so she’s making the graphics. I’m not sure what we’re going to do with sounds and music. I suppose we’ll just record them (yeah, I make sfx out of actual sounds).

Oh, and I’m using FlashDevelop as the IDE, programming in Haxe, and the library is HaxePunk. I guess she’s using ms paint.

I’ll set everything up, go to sleep and wake up early. Though it’s 0 am here in Buenos Aires, my brain works better early in the morning than late at night.

For art try, some free open source software like paint.net or gimp. paint .net is easier to learn but not as powerful compared to gimp. But in terms of creating content from scratch its down to skill and patience and doesn’t matter what software you use, so don’t bother with photoshop. But I really recommend to even try paint.net, it will make your girlfriends life an awful lot easier.

For sounds, I recommend BFXR, it’s a software that makes sounds from various genres (Shoot, Coin pickup, ect)

Good luck to you two, we are in a similar position, but having finished our first game at LD28 :)

Make your Music

I’m not in the MiniLD unfortunately, won’t have time since I’ll be travelling this weekend.

However today I stumbled across an older post by GreaseMonkey where he created a music generator in Python. I downloaded it and was impressed by the outcome. And curious as I am, I started messing around with stuff and broke extended his script.

I failed at making a Banjo, but it actually came out okay, so take it as you will. Here’s my list of all scripts, feel free to use them at will. I’ve also uploaded some Mp3 samples converted from .it

You’ll need Python 2.x to run it, works for me with 2.7 (win installer here). To listen and eventually convert .it files I used VLC (win installer here).

How to convert in VLC:
1. Media > Convert / Save
2. Press “Add” => Select the .it file
3. Press “Convert/Save” > Select Audio – MP3 profile
4. Choose destination file. Name your file whatever you want .mp3 and Start.

Enjoy, and credits to GreaseMonkey for an AWESOME job :)

PS.: The most unique one is probably INDUSTRIAL. And I’m still working on PHANTASMAGORICAL, it’s broken and sounds like crap, I don’t recommend using that one.

This is fantastic! Do you know what I’d need to change in the code to produce longer or shorter tracks?

As far as my testing goes it would be line 930:

Ah, the famous autotracker program with the nicest procedural music generator around!

I’m in ! (for the 48th MiniLD)

I’m in !

After creating my first videogame for the 28th LD, I will create my second one for the 48th MiniLD !

It will be an Android Game about the “Facade” Theme.

This time, my aim is to add audio, I never did it before !

One of the main difficulty will be the fact to support multiple screens and to export correctly my game, which will need a big balancing !

See you when it will be done !

(Sorry for the eventual english mistakes)

Team from TinkerMill joining MiniLD 48!

Reporting in from TinkerMill:

We have been so excited from the first Ludum Dare we entered (LD #28 entry: Lobo), that we decided to come back for another Dare (albeit a Mini one).  We have learned so much from our first try and are itching to try again!

Going off of the theme of deception, we decided to create a simple con-man style game.  It’s a much smaller scope, so we should be able to finish it in a reasonable time frame.  We even have a basic engine started already!

More posts to come as the game develops.

False Mirror

False Mirror

I’m not sure if I’m going to continue with it, but my idea for the miniLD was that you have a large group of objects and you’re tasked with finding out which object is a facade by holding them up against a mirror.

Nice mirror. But it feel like you need to add something more to the game mechanism to make it more fun. E.g. another task or two so that it becomes a game about time management. What if you have more mirrors and the small dudes move around and you must find the rogue one before it commits its crime. so you don’t have to grab them all. Maybe you place mirrors to make it more of a Tower defence game?

Overthrow Day One

So I am a few hours in and unfortunately am forced to call it a night. Design wise, I’m mostly done. I work with kids and spent a bunch of time today doodling with them, getting some idea of the art down. Will get that converted to pixel art most likely tomorrow. As far as coding goes I can now load a tilemap(with placeholder graphics) which places down clickable units (also with placeholder graphics). The clicks do nothing at this point, but the game recognizes that they are clicked, and literally no UI elements have been implemented but with only working ~3 hours on it I’m pretty happy with where I am.

I work tomorrow from 8-noon and will be taking major breaks to do real world things so we will see how much actually gets done tomorrow.

My goals for tomorrow:

  • Have basic units respond to being clicked (highlight) and move semi-appropriately on start
  • Have basic (even placeholder) UI elements in place. Enough to play the game at a manageable level.
  • Have more than one unit and their respective abilities working (not necessarily balanced)
  • Get some basic art in place even if it does not have smooth animations yet
  • Post a screenshot for #screenshotsaturday

Feeling really motivated and happy working on this. I’ll check back in tomorrow, hopefully getting all my goals accomplished!

Lucky Lighter – Day One

Just flew across the country and ready to roll on MiniLD #48, tho starting a little late! This will be my second adventure into the land of game programing, the first was System Control for LD#28 which placed 60 overall! The remainder of tonight will be used setting some stuff up and finalizing the plan for the weekend. The idea I have was inspired by a Roald Dahl short story that I’ve wanted to make for a long time. My goal for this weekend is to get the code complete as graphics, sfx and music will be finalized later after the jam. The tools I will be using: Flash AS3, Figure and Sound Studio 4. Good luck to everyone and can’t wait to see the weekend unfold.

Corrupt-O-Pong Night One

So, I’ve made good progress on my game over the past four-ish hours. It’s working title is Corrupt-O-Pong, and I think I might stick with that. It’s Pong, but every time the ball hits a paddle a random weird event (corruption of the rules of Pong) happens. For example, maybe the camera will start zooming in and out, or start spinning, or your controls will invert, or the paddle will shrink or grow. Right now I essentially have normal Pong, minus sounds, score, ball reset, and AI, but all of those should be pretty easy to implement besides AI. I also still have to so all the weird effects, and menus, as well as make the sounds and music. Thankfully, I think there’ll be minimal art necessary. I intend to jump on the “juicing” trend as much as possible. Hopefully it’ll turn out good.

The pink line's for tweaking the bouncing, and it kind looks cool too.

Mini Ludum Dare 48 Game: Death Plot

Current Title Screen of the game

Yesterday, I posted the day zero development log of my Mini LD 48 game, Death Plot. Now I will explain the game. I am using a more literal definition of conspiracy and façade. The game is a top down two dimensional shooter/bullet hell. It is a single player game where you control two characters at the same time, tying in conspiracy.

The graphics are OBVIOUSLY placeholder. They’ll be worked on tomorrow.

One of the characters is controlled with WASD controls, the other with the arrow keys. You will fire bullets with the spacebar. It is intended that you use both hands on the keyboard, and control the characters single player. That adds a challenge. You could potentially do local multiplayer, but it is not designed that way.
The enemies come in two flavours: real and façade enemies. The real ones shoot bullets that one shot you. (It’s a bullet hell after all.) The facades’ shoot bullets that don’t harm you, but they serve as visual clutter to make dodging more difficult.
I haven’t completely decided on the visual style, but it will probably be ASCII or early sprite based.
Anyway, that’s the general gist of the game. If all goes well, I will have a playable prototype tomorrow. My Day 1 Dev Blog is coming next.

This time I know it’s for reeeeeeeeal

This is my first solo attempt at the MiniLD. I participated in the last Ludum Dare Jam as a part of the Lolshouse Dev Team, along with my friend Chia (who is also participating in this MiniLD). So far, my game’s looking a little bit like this:

pastel

I hope you like pastel colours, puzzles, weather effects and squares, because that’s what you’re going to get.

Operation Stealth is moving along nicely.

Stealth is fun!
So is AI!
And enemies in general!
Not only are these three things important in many games, they are all things I am attempting to learn how to do for the first time in this mini-LD!
I now have a working gun with pretty particle effect, enemies with a cone of vison who react to you, a “try and stay out of the light” system. So far so great!
Now let’s see how long it takes me to break everything. 😀

standOff!

An old-fashioned stand off!

Looks really cool! :)

A belated “I’m in!” post for miniLD #48

This post is a little late but I’m in for miniLD #48 , just about to get started. No idea what I’m doing, or even what I’m using (it’ll either be Flash CC or Construct 2, I’ll decide after I’ve had an idea). I’m using this as a motivation boost, trying to get my 2014 game development off to a good start. Best of luck to everyone involved!
