LD30 August 22–25, 2014

Late Arrival, Whoops. Well, This One Has Kicked The Bucket.

I didn’t officially announce I was doing this until now, and now I’m done. Oh well. This one was a good one! I made a hacking game, but then didn’t think it had quite enough of theme in it, so I made the player a ghost. It turned out better than last time for sure (if still very arcadey), but as to how fun it actually is, I can’t say (still have the creative tunnel vision, likely will for a month). Here’s a sneak peek:
oooo

OOOOOoooOOooo

Sums it up pretty well. Can’t wait to see some of the things others put together!

Edit (6:00): I just realized, I did the least popular final round theme in addition to the most popular final round theme.

Ludum Dare #30 – Success!

shot1

Hey there!

I just finished my LD entry “Willy The Triangle”, my second time participating in a Ludum Dare. Willy The Triangle is a 2,5D multi dimensional platformer with evil rectangles – what could someone want more?

Development was straight forward: Yesterday, in the morning I’ve started development and finished just now (of course with some breaks, including 8hours sleep and one stop at the fitness centre – you have to be fit when developing :P) – so development was quite chill. I spent around 1 hour fiddling with some ideas and thinking about some concepts, but I have to admit I am not the planning type of guy – I really had just a rough concept, which was at the beginning time travelling in a RPG style game. But I quickly adapted this into parallel dimensions, because time travelling was too complex and time was spare. Then I realized that RPGs are much more time consuming, which again, is not something you have a lot during a LD. So I chose my favorite genre instead, which I knew is possible in 48 hours: Plattformer (as my first LD entry was also a platformer).

Then development kinda rushed through. On day 1 I basically developed the engine and maps and on day 2 I made all the assets and finetuning. I personally like this approach a lot, because you reduce the amount of unnecessary assets you have to create and you are in different mindsets when developing and when making graphics – switching too often is not healthy for a game in my opinion. I think I spent around 30 hours on this game in total. No serious bug hunting or other unexpected time issues were encountered during the development.

My toolchain?

  • Development: GLBasic
  • Graphics: Paint.NET / PS / Milkshape 3D
  • Sound: sfxr / GarageBand + my VDRUM
  • Misc: calc.exe / Notepad++

I chose GLBasic because it is in my opinion one of the best rapid development tool for games out there. It offers real flexibility, while still having a wide range of features. I personally am really the fastest with GLB. The 3D engine is low level (nearly OpenGL) but because of this you can do astounding stuff with this very fast.

What went wrong? I do not think the game itself is that fun to play, because I am a terrible map creator, and the result is kinda what you expect. I think the game mechanic could have been much more involved in the map creation process and would have lead into a better gaming experience. Next time I’ll do better – I hope.

What went well? I think the entire development process and the asset creation was very good. Escpecially the graphics I kinda like, as I am not very talented with 2d drawing/3d modelling but it looks in my opinion not that bad. Sound is another story though… Music I have never done before, so I struggled a lot and sounds are the default sfxr creations.

Please take a look at my game, if you leave a comment I would be very happy:

Greetings from Austria, Vienna :)

Soo close

You can now win the game. Yay. I have changed it a bit so instead of dropping items, resources now drop money to symbolize that money is how most people connect. ( not because am a bad coder). Anyway i am happy with my game. A couple of major things went wrong (like my quest system not working). But I have got around that and am happy with my game.progress3

The Game So Far!

Less 28 hours left and still a lot to do 😀

Tribe of the Giant

I finished and released Tribe of the Giant for the 48h compo. This was a lot of fun to make, yet also very tedious. I changed gameplay ideas often throughout the course of the weekend, and only on Sunday afternoon had an idea where I was going with it. It turned out well, though!

I recorded a timelapse which I’ll turn into a video. Hope you enjoy the game!

Imaginary World final

This is my last version that I submit for this dare, then sleep time!

My submission:  http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-30/?action=preview&uid=41130

You are a normal person. Daytime you do normal stuff, but night time you enter the dream world and start to fight dragons and vampires. You can’t die, it’s a dream after all. :O

It has two parts:

  • missions: You do missions and gain experience. You don’t have limit for missions
  • kings: You convert your XP to energy and use it to defeat a king. One must have at least 21 hp to attack a king and will lose 20 each attack. HP increases every second with a max of 100

So, look at that awesome text and look closer here: http://imaginaryworld.azurewebsites.net/

Have fun… or sleep well :)

Father & Son LD #3: We did it!

Phew, we made it just under the wire! All my lofty dreams feel by the wayside so i threw together what i could. I had planned a Unity game, then realized I just didnt know enough, but that set me back a ton. So i went back to good ole Flash, but then missed messing in Unity. Not the best situation for creating something fun in 48 hours! Lessons learned: 1. choose the tools that you know! LD is most fun when i get to focus on creating the story, the gameplay, and the visuals… rather than how to properly UV a sphere!!!! 2. dont give up! there were a few times this LD that i thought i would just throw in the towel, Oscar was a great motivator and pushed me on (thanks Osc!). 3. have fun watching your game emerge! ok, not a lesson, but it’s always a highlight of LD – watching the game you thought you were going to build come to live and evolve into something unknown

Here’s my entry, LyftOff!

Oscar’s entry is totally cool too, the HEROES quest.

Thanks everyone! Michelangelo (the older dude) and Oscar (the little guy)!

The Swarm!

The Swarm!

Due to travelling we started pretty late for this LD Jam, its no a problem as as you can see above it’s progressing nicely, movement and combat is fully fleshed out leaving tomorrow to add in trading. The game looks much nicer in motion I though about posting a gif, but here is the WIP windows .exe which is even better https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/31300151/SpacedOut/SpacedOutWin.zip WASD to move and turn, scroll wheel to zoom, mouse click to fire, Esc closes the game. Have fun! :)

Final stretch!

Well, this could officially be called a game now – fly around, pick up planets, then swing them around like a crazy person to damage your enemies. The person with the highest total population (cumulative hp of all attached planets) wins.

That said, it still needs sound, music, menus, title page, AI, bugfixes, and probably some other stuff, with…4 hours left?

Let’s do this.

Blue ones have high hp, red ones do more damage, purple ones can steal enemy stuff, and yellow ones are yellow.

TASTE THE RAINBOW FOOLS

Of Light And Dark: Nearly Finished!

I managed to come up with an Idea fairly quickly this time round. However, this Idea began to turn into a game I wanted to make about 5 years ago. It is most certainly not the same, but follows similar ideas.

What I present is a short puzzle game. Short, because I’m not very quick at level design, so there’s only about 11 levels.

All the graphics were done by hand in microsoft paint XP. Yup, you can hate me for it if you want, but I won’t care.

The goal is basically to solve puzzles and overcome obstacles by switching between two worlds — The nomal world, where darkness blocks, and the shadow world, where light burns. Anyway, here’s a pic:

final

Based on prior Ludum Dare experience, one of the first things I focused on was a key config menu: vitally important for those with out-of-the-ordinary keyboards, as well as people who are uncomfortable with the default controls. Believe me, it helps a bundle.

Anyway, the game isn’t up yet as I’m gonna see if I can’t compose some background music, but I’ll have it up soon enough on GameJolt and itch.io. If you’re interested in anything I have to say, check out my twitter, @MaddeMichael

By the way, after seeing what other people have posted, I’m blown away. It’s amazing what you guys can do in such a short time! Anyway, good luck!

Michael

First submission to LD :)

There we are, it’s done!

My very first Ludum Dare game for #30 is ready and uploaded HERE.

This being my first attempt I must say, it is fun – and exhausting. It’s not much time and along the road I often thought ‘Man I really need to cut stuff out’. But I am very pleased with the result and am looking forward to people enjoying my game and me enjoying other people’s game.

I hope all the others had fun as well 😉

schizm is officially in the compo!

schizm – build new ships out of used parts to defeat the red player

In a solar system far, far away there exists two neighboring worlds which are embroiled in a millennium long war. The war have been so enduring that neither world can afford to produce completely new spaceships to carry on the conflict; instead both worlds now repurpose the derelicts and ship components from past battles which have gathered in the space between the planets. Help the blue planet to finally defeat the red planet in the dramatic conclusion to this legendary saga (huehuehue)!

This was my first ludumdare and I had a fantastic time!

Finished!

I think I’m finished! Just time to export it and upload it to itch.io or something. Java applets are always fun.

And that’s done !

I’ve just finished my game Dizziness !

It’s talking about stabilized galaxies.

Will you succeed ?

Let’s see that here !

Comment and rate if you like it ! =D

Made it!

This was my first Ludum Dare and I just finished my game! Although it is a bit weird and probably not many people will like it, I feel pretty happy right now about having gotten the game to a point where it feels at least a bit playable in these 48 hours. I even got the Windows port working within the deadline. Ludum Dare is awesome! Good luck to everyone who is still working! Have fun!

So close !

Sans titre

The game looks like that, pretty close from the first draw 😀

The Text Adventures To A Land In The Sky We Call Game Submission

The text adventure has been “completed!” But, wait! What’s with the quotes? Well, I’ll tell you, helpful voice!

The game isn’t exactly “complete” in that I don’t think I’ll ever stop working on it. I finished it for the compo, yes, but I probably could’ve added more had I not been tired from not doing anything productive other than this. But, without further ado, here’s my new game (my first actual video game!) A BROKEN PLANET!

ABrokenPlanet Title Screen

I’ll do a postmortem entry once I sleep and get college work done. It’s been a really fun weekend making this thing! Let me know about any game breaking bugs, too. I need to know that 😛

Cheers!
