LD30 August 22–25, 2014

Finished my entry: Ghostly Worlds

It’s done! I didn’t make this to win (clearly), but I made it to try out the competition process, as this is my first time participating in Ludum Dare. I spent around 6 hours total on the game.

The biggest flaws:

  • Not much creativity in regards to the theme — I just wanted to start right away, so I didn’t spend much time trying to come up with an interesting concept
  • Lots of bugs. Introducing random level generation, and not spending much time on it, means levels are sometimes unwinnable.
  • Boring gameplay. The concept is just really simple.
  • Bad art.
  • The code is very poorly organized as a result of being rushed.

That said, I was happy to create something that’s “complete” in the sense that it has these components:

  • Title screen
  • Game over screen
  • Multiple levels (all randomly generated)
  • Sound effects
  • Music
  • Very basic AI (if you can even call it that)

I was also happy to add a few special effects, even though they don’t serve much purpose: lights, zoom, etc. These are part of my work-in-progress graphics engine.

Anyway, here are some links:

Federation Market, Scanning & Interface

These are implemented or done:

– Scanning the area by radar (upgradable) and showing the materials on planets
– Minimap icons, icons of planets according to the materials on them
– Docking to home station and being able to open station menu window
– Spaceship stats show on screen, fuel gets consumed, cargo gets full, materials get gathered
– Zooming by scrolling middle mouse button
– Federation market station for shopping purposes

After a good night’s sleep, tomorrow, we will go on with the list we made. Some of the crucial things are;

– Making the station window fully interactive, material management, selling materials, upgrading the ship
– A federation newspaper that includes the story. The story will affect the space market.
– Federation fuel station, buying fuel
– Buying materials and spaceship parts in federation market station
– At least 5-6 more planets
– A complete world map that can be toggled
– Moving at light speed
– Explosive material that reacts to heavy damage on ship when carried
– Remaining weapon upgrades (laserguns are already done) and shooting
– Security for federation stations (if you are caught with illegal material on you or if you attack them)

By this point the game will be playable but there are also extra stuff we are planning to add if we can manage to finish these;

– Cargo ships that move from market to market and that you can shop on if you dock
– Other merchants with their own stations moving around
– Pirates (enemy AI and combat)

Here is our federation market. (It’s a gif!) (Spaceship for the app. scale) Good luck everyone! :)

It’s Over!

Header

Well, I was in for the th- I don’t know really’th time! I went solo this time to actually see what the serious view of this jam is all about.

Serious as my work area:

After tasting the sweet glory of using a second screen for game development, I simply HAD to do it again, but since I’m a cheap boy I just plugged my T.V. (hope it doesn’t burn my eyes, though). Oh, and that fan, it isn’t for me, it is to cool down my crappy PC (it didn’t cool it down).

I wasn’t able to catch up with the guys at La Cordée doing Ludum Dare Paris, so I did a small poster as a homage to the good times during the last compo:

And thank you guys for signing it back! Hope you all did well this compo and ate lots of pizza! :)

Alright, now the game.

I worked for the first time on the jam and HELL, it was horrible. Don’t get me wrong, it was fun but not as much as working with some mates like in Ludum Dare Paris or my self-made jams with friends. Without mentioning that family slept over in the house, and well, I won’t ignore my guests.

But anyways, I worked on the game, and thank you all for finally choosing a theme I liked (though I don’t think it has a lot of diversity possibilities) but I got overhyped for my idea which was probably not that original/great (I just hope I was good enough to compensate it with nice gameplay).

If you played my previous Ludum Dare games, Hell Hole and One Man Army, you may have noticed that I have this obsession with making cute, puffy characters doing explosions and lots of screen shakes. This time I decided to try to do it a little bit the other way around, a little bit more serious and different art style (heck, I didn’t even use my tablet).

A few sketches I did during the jam

I didn’t sleep for two whole days, and it was odd, my brain simply couldn’t make basic math and I think I saw a few eye illusions, which creeped me out.

There’s not much to say, really. It’s just a game about a futuristic guy fighting stone giants. I didn’t put all I wanted to be in the game because time limitations, which was a story and background art. But I’m pretty happy about how the gameplay turned out. Have some screenshots.

Maybe I’ll post the timelapse if my computer doesn’t burn down while rendering. In the meantime, go play the game, won’t you?

PLAY THE GAME

Anyways, as always, it was great to be in a jam again. I am really, really tired and I’m going to sleep now. Thanks for reading this post or playing the game or both, I love you <<<<<333

G’nite! I think I’ll rate some games tomorrow.

Blue

You can shoot fireballs now, but…

They don’t really do anything yet.

I was thinking about making them really destructive and then changing them to be like a Dragon’s weapon or something… but who knows if I’ll get to that in time.

I’m doing the Jam, so I have the whole night still — but I work tomorrow, so probably won’t be able to get anything done after I go to bed in the morning…

Finally done!

Wow this LD was pretty wierd for me;

I didn’t know what to do with the theme; I’m still not sure what I’ve done with the theme.

But it’s… unique XD

So apperantly, the game is about 3 or 4 minutes long;

I’ts kind of mindfu*k-comedy, I hope tou still like it , It was pretty fun and funny making it so yeah…

As per usual everything’s original:

**Soundtrack is my new keyboard and me ^^ – recorded it at home ^^.

I actually think the soundtrack went well even though the game’s kinda wierd .. so if you don’t understand the game

I’d be glad to hear your opnion at least about the soundtrack.

Recording- I dumbly recorded each layer seperately without listening to the other and somehow I actually got the tempo right so I’m kinda proud XD

This was kinda funny and fun at the same time.

This time the soundtrack is actually 3 tracks which essentialy are the same track edited differently – the first track is just the second track slowed down with some Wah wah effect; The second is the original; And the third is the second one reversed for the ending ^^.

**Art: This time it went pretty badly; I had no mood for making good art knowing I wanted to do some kind of a long plotty game ; though too much of planning just took all my time , and essentialy I just haven’t had the mood for some reason.

**Gameplay: I don’t know if you can call it gameplay it’s just random tasks, random plot .. just .. stuff XD

But if you want something light and hopefully funny, you might actually laugh a bit 😛

**Code: of course C++ & directX; and I think this is the last time I’m gonna use this on LD;

Cause – it just doesn’t suit this kind of competetion.

**Plot: yeah so of course the “plot” is essentialy a scientist living in a world which is composed of 2 worlds he tries to find out how to get to the neighbour world and the rest is a history … [3 minutes history but oh well]

So yeah it was fun and I hope I would do another LD;

And now of course the best part – seeing all those great games about a theme decided 48 hrs ago.

Who would’ve believed huh ? 😉

Happy Ludum Dare #30

g_o :)

The Atmosphere Works

We finally got the atmosphere to not break the first law of thermodynamics.  It is now a closed system!  Now we move on to adding in the animal simulation and the gameplay itself.  We wish that we hadn’t chosen such an absurdly ambitious idea but at least we have 72 hours.  Good luck to everyone on their own projects, especially those of you trying to meet tonight’s deadline!

The lighter the red, the higher the pressure.

Finished!

My entry is done! The link to play it is here:

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-30/?action=preview&uid=14203

A lot of fun to make! I’ll probably write up a post-mortem thingo a bit later, if I can remember to do so.

Another Ludum Day ends…

…and we’re still doing well. We’ve added some more functionality and sounds (usfxr is a great tool!) and tomorrow is the day we’ll finally replace those placeholder graphics that served us so well the past 41 hours.

There’s still a lot to do like creating some more levels… but we’ll manage it. 😀

We wish you continued success for your entries, especially for the finish of the compo entries. :)

Milestone 7

Couple more hours, few more features.  First of all, there are levels now. Every time your witch dies, the board resets, possibly with more witches. The witches can now be on your team, on Z’s team, or on no one’s team.  It was stressful for a while, but this version is getting real close to something that I’m going to be glad about submitting. A lot of features didn’t make it in, but I think it’s come along decently.

  1. Setup fission_engine
  2. Get a basic UI started
  3. Add links between planets
  4. Add ‘familiars’ and ‘witches’
  5. Show where ‘familiars’ are
  6. Add turns
  7. Add actions that a ‘familiar’ will take
  8. Change karma and powers based on actions
  9. Show which planets a ‘witch’ is on
  10. Add simple AI
  11. Add more planets and arrange the planets better
  12. Add next level condition
  13. Add Witch spawns
  14. Add Defend and for* commands
  15. Add win condition
  16. Make the lines between planets more obvious
  17. Planet textures
  18. Make double clicking take you to that planet
  19. Bug Fixes
  20. Add lose condition

My first Ludum Dare

Today I’ve submitted my first game, Trading Worlds for the 30th ludum dare. It’s also my first ludum dare. Frankly, I don’t know how I did manage to produce a “fun” game in such a short time frame (I had only 12h of work on it, as I had to go in my family). It’s a small web-based puzzle game, in which players must connect planets to each other via trade routes. Bigger the route, bigger the score. However, they also need to watch for the timer, and watch out not to lock the board by creating trade routes impossible to finish.

I’m pretty glad to what I could achieve 12h. I had plenty more ideas, but I’ll not implement them for the ludum dare. If people find this game fun, I could continue the work on it.

Done. Check it out.

I made about planets. There are some portals. It’s pretty decent. Go on, click the image to check it out.

Almost Done!

Twine and Unity experiment update 2

Well it’s getting past my bedtime, I was hoping I’d have a little something to submit to the compo, but I’ll rather polish what I have tomorrow evening and submit it to the Jam instead. You can check out my progress here

Twine and Unity friends with possible benefits.

Twine and Unity, friends with possible benefits.

It’s a simple little thing connecting Twine and Unity, think of it as a twine game with interactive illustrations… or something. Once you open the second door, there’s no more in this edition. Hopefully I can wrap this one up and add a chapter or two more tomorrow. Now that all the code is in place it’s just a matter of how much story I can think up in one evening :)
