Thought Reactor is in!

The theme is pretty wild, but we’re in. This time we’ll be going at it with a two man team for the jam. Have fun going solo for the past couple jams – but now it is time to work as a team and make a better game!

We’ll likely be using:

  • Unity3D
  • Photoshop and Blender for graphics
  • FL Studio 12 for muzac
  • BFXR for sound fx, of course!
  • Sublime Text/Visual Studio for code stuffs
  • Trello and idealizr (my own creation) for tracking

Lastly, I made a little prototype app, called idealizr, to help collect ideas in a neat, organized way. It’s pretty rudimentary, but it should suffice as a cool way to jot some ideas down for those of us ‘millenials’ who hate paper and/or word processors. It was something I was toying around with to use instead of Trello for brainstorming – so I figured I’d share it with you all! Also, we’ll be streaming from time to time on Thought Reactor Live, so come check out our progress.

Good luck to everyone – it’s going to be a crazy weekend!

First Jam

Hi.

It’s my first jam and I’m a little lost. I have a concept for the game and an idea of what to do. But i don’t know exactly where to find free assets… The game will be a fantasy platformer. I’m looking, i’m googling it, but it will take to much time. Anyway… Everybody have fun! XD

you could make some of your own 😉 at this stage my game is still just colored boxes so its alright. and its also fine if you are bad at art thats what we call “dev art” and its pretty standard here. good luck

Programmer art is great!

If you’re doing the Compo, you have to make the art yourself. If you’re doing the Jam, opengameart.org is a popular site for free assets.

I’m doing the jam, but thanks guys. XD

I’m In! I’m In!

I’m in for my 3rd dare. I’ve missed the last few.

Unfortunately I am starting late, and I have to go to the doctor tomorrow to get some stitches out! :O But I have faith I can get something out in the time I have. I want to focus on ‘fun’ this time around. As my last games (while I am proud of them) were not the most fun. But I don’t have an idea quite yet so we will see how it goes!

Tools
Art – Photoshop
Engine – Unity (2D)
IDE – Visual Studio (2015 Community)
Music – Garageband
SFX – Chiptone
Planning – Whiteboard/Sublime Text
Sleeping – Bed
Not Sleeping – Lots of Tea

Day 0 – Shapeshifting

Decided to work with Solifuge this time around, and we decided to go with a pretty basic interpretation. We’re hoping to make up for it in awesome features.

Oh and I made a cube that squidges… it’s adorable.

Sharing my idea. Does it fit the theme?

Hey,

I know I am probably asking for my idea to be stolen but it is what it is lol.  I have 2 pages of brainstorming and this is the only idea I like but I feel like it doesn’t really fit the theme and people are going to score me down.

Basically the concept is you are in a village where a werewolf has killed someone.  You have to talk to all the villagers during the day to gather clues.  Then at night you get to imprison someone in the jail because you think it’s them.  In the morning if no one has died you win that level, if someone else has died you know it’s not that person and you gather more clues.

There is a “shapeshifter” but there won’t be able real shape shifting going on. Am I just asking to be scored down? or do you guys think this fits the theme enough?

Thanks for your help.

-Tom

I find the most creative and non-literal interpretations of the themes the most interesting, so I say go for it.

Lookup a web game called “Town of salem”. Very similar and it’s super fun.

themes are always open to interpretation and there is no right or wrong answer for if it fits the theme. id say it does as it is similar to what i am doing as well! good luck and go with whatever you feel you can make. theme isnt that important anyway

Ultimately, you’re in this to challenge yourself and enjoy creating a game (hopefully a game that you yourself would play). I think the most important question to ask is this: would you enjoy making the game, and would you enjoy playing it. If both of those boxes are checked, and the idea even barely relates to the theme, go for it!

I would play your game based on that description. Sounds like a single player version of “Weerwolven van Wakkerdam”.

OK cool. Thank you guys for being so supportive 😀 I did not expect that. I do have a lot of ideas for this and I am not at all excited about any of my other ideas. So here we go!

I think its pretty much perfect.

Ok, I’m in!

Hello everyone, i will try this LD with some MusicBeat-roguelike game.
Priority – sweet gameplay feels and musics. Lets start and see that I can!
Good luck to everyone 😉

Theme Thoughts and Initial Design

So the theme was not my first pick, but I am making the best of it. I really am starting to think that there is something wrong with the Theme Selection engine because this is two #ldjam in a row with negative themes. Or, maybe there is just that much diversity now?

anyway, I brainstormed some ideas with my lovely wife and kids and I think I have a working game idea. It will be a very simple game where different themed shapes are being dropped randomly and you must shift their properties to match the shape and color it is falling towards.

It will start slowly and then build up speed. You can make three mistakes (three lives) which will slow the rate of falling again. When you run out of lives the game is over. It will start with one lane, but we might expand it to more depending on how easy/hard the game is.

We will see, it sounds kind of fun but I am not sure.

Check out my Trello Board with some of the details.

Getting the Ball Rolling

Got some of the basic mechanics in the game. Graphics are terrible and there’s no shapeshifting so far, but it’s a start 😛

It’s hard to tell what is going on because the screenshot didn’t capture the mouse cursor, but it’s essentially going to be some kind of Tower-Defense / Resource-Managing game, involving a single resource that you have to transform in order to create different types of ‘tower’ etc.

Here we go!

Someone waiting for me to start. Who will be?

Of course! You, always!

I have my idea!

So, I have a great idea that fits the theme, and is absolutely hilarious. I’ve even got a narrative in mind! This is gonna be GOOD!

I will tease something when I have more.

Your PHONE is the shapeshifter!

Here’s some incoherent scribbles.

sounds pretty cool. Hope it has cool teeth that close for scene transitions. :3

Some progress!

I’m gonna try to make some sort of stealth game in wich you can transform into different props.

This is very early and all the assets are placeholders.

It is 5 am here, so I’m gonna go sleep!

A theme revisited

Oh bother, I submitted a shape-shifting game in LD33, but that is how the cookie crumbles (hey isn’t that a metaphor for shape-shifting?).

Time for some out-of-the-box thinking!

Good luck all

Idea Vote!

The votes are in and TEAM PHEASANT TEARS have decided upon an idea!

Game idea 1 puts the player in the shoes of office furniture… The player will possess pieces of furniture and move them around an office space, swapping positions with various other pieces of furniture in an attempt to satisfy staff’s needs. Maybe a staff member is too far away from the water cooler. Maybe they need to use the printer regularly but are sat too far away from it. Or maybe they just don’t like their colleague sat next them. No job is too big or small for *pause for dramatic effect* THE OFFICE BICYCLE (patent pending)…

Progress after 2 hours. I’m satisfied.

letterhead by hi-scor.es

I like to make logos for my games before I start working on them.  Helps give me a sense of the feel I want to go toward.

I have an idea, and it’s about lots of bouncing around and shifting letters… I think. Don’t know how it’s going to be a game yet. This usually doesn’t happen to me, but I hope to discover something once I start flinging letters.

So here it is
