LD35 April 15–18, 2016

I am in.

This is one of the few themes I really didn’t want. It will involve a lot of art since you need to visually show the shape shifting and a lot of the games will be similar I bet, more than previous themes. Damn you guys for voting for this theme.

Cards and rooms

Drag cards

Been working on a card system, looking nice so far.

Cards can be dragged into play, currently they add rooms to the world but they will do more later on

I’m 7 hours late! And I am so busy!

So I woke up 6 hours after the theme was announced. I was disappointed (as always) and I have a lot of school work to do so I guess I will be entering the Jam and make a game in the very small time I can get.

I already have an idea and I will be using:

  1. HTML5, JavaScript and CSS for the game engine programming.
  2. GIMP for Artwork.
  3. BFXR and Audacity for Sound Effects.
  4. Brackets for script editing.

I never done music soundtracks before and I hope someone gives me the name of some free music makers I can use to quickly produce some good retro styled music.

I will also drink lots of coffee to keep me awake as long as I can.

Good luck with your games, everyone!

First Night’s Results

So characters can be selected and told where to go basically.

I’m happy to have a character complete… I’m getting my sleep now. 😀

Phase 2 – Prototyping

So have an idea I am going to run with and while its not the most original idea I wasn’t hit with to many waves of inspiration (despite voting for this theme so no one to blame but myself) but I am hoping I can implement well with a few twists to make it different enough but putting most effort into making the playing of the game fun (I hope).

THe stream is up! :D

Due to complications, we have put the stream on my secondary youtube channel. so there you go! 😀

Time for some jam!

Well the game jam variety, but in the compo form as usual!

Veteran (but still awful) LD’er I return to make yet another game that isn’t really a game (usually leads to some reviews that don’t understand why I have no ‘real’ gameplay).

Making it with Game Maker Studio, I cannot wait to actually make the assets for this game in GIMP, and all sound effects/music made by my face with Audacity :)

Here’s a sneaky peak, not one of my best WIP imagery, but can you guess what it is yet? 😛

Progress

Our Hero is already prepared to be used in Unity 5. Here are some concept arts ^_^

Well… this theme.

So, I Wake up this morning early ready to rock and… this theme appears, so well, here is my ULTRAMEGAHYPERSIDESCROLLERSHOOTER

End of Day 1

Alright, so over the past few days my friend @shakesoda and I (@LandonManning) have been preparing for another Daring Adventure. It turns out that basically all of our preparations were wasted, but fret not, we’ve made progress nonetheless!

As usual, we are using LOVE (Lua) to build our game. We have our own 3D code sitting on top of LOVE that works quite well. We will be using Blender for our 3D models, Audacity for any sfx or voice acting, Atom/VSCode as our text editor, and for the first time, we’re both running Linux!

To being, the boilerplate we prepared turned out to be older code than we wanted, and it caused a lot of problems. We pulled it from an old project and didn’t notice that it was totally wrong until the clock was already ticking. It took some extra time, but we finally got our systems back up and running, and a cube was being rendered. Next, we came up with a few ideas for various themes to give a bit of an edge, but we couldn’t think up anything interesting for Shapeshift. Ugh. We managed to rethink an idea we had for another theme and we actually like it. I’ll go more into it in another post, but the basis is that you’re in a rock-paper-scissors scenario, and you are always forced into the disadvantage.

Now for the positives! Even though we had a rocky start, I think we’re actually a bit ahead today. We have a fully working player controller, AABB-OBB collisions are being detected but not yet resolved (we’re having trouble figuring out how to get the hit vector/collision direction… Any help would be appreciated! Tweet me @LandonManning <3), and our basic rock-paper-scissors stuff is implemented. The screenshot below doesn’t really show much, but tomorrow we hope to have some of the art done and game mechanics implemented.

Starting right now…

Since LD starts at 3AM for me, I rather got some sleep and I am starting now! Well, I started a bit earlier to think about the theme.

Speaking of theme…. many jobs are boring and shifts can get pretty much straightforward. But. What if your job happens to be an experimental spacepilot? What if your shifts include shaping outer space as you fly through, killing aliens, destroying asteroid fields and exploring planets?

And what if you’re a clone of a clone of a clone….

TL;DR: Finally, I will try to make a space exploration game, but in 2D and due to the time limitations only in 2D plane with 3D like view. Sounds crazy? Stay tuned for updates!

So much more ideas then I expected!

So when I woke up this morning (Europe, so a lot of you have already started. Go get’em, guys!) and I looked at the theme I was like, ‘meh’. But then I talked to some friends about it and I got so many ideas! Here’s my idea dump:

Lunchbreak update

Taking a small break for lunch. Have been at it for four hours now and I’m pretty happy with my progress.

Had my initial troubles with the theme, but then had an idea. I have moving player objects and the physics are running. Next the logic and the goal.

So exciting 😀

Mutant Chicken Death Jam!

We’re making progress on our game!

The basic idea is that you’re a chicken in space, fighting off aliens with a fart (ray) gun. If you come into contact with some toxic space goo, you mutate (shape shift) into a giant fireball spitting chicken!

Here’s a screenshot of some early gameplay:

Progress so far on LD35

Just got started an hour or so ago. Kinda like the theme.

Brainstormed a bunch of ideas and we found something with a core essence of fun embedded in it somewhere – so now we just have to get working on extracting and refining it!

Brainstorming on paper

More paper-based concepts

More paper-based concepts

You protect your core from attacking things by deflecting them using your shape. As your core gets broken down the shape you use changes and gets less stable, rotating and spinning making it more difficult to deflect the attackers. Have a bunch of ideas on power-ups and having the core regenerate but gotta start on getting a first playable concept up and running to test if it actually has any hope of working…
