Locked In The Main Mechanic

Had to bang my head quite a bit to finally settle on the mechanic I want. The idea/mechanic so far:

  • The player pushes blocks towards the edge of the screen to “shape shift” that specific quadrant.

My biggest struggle was getting pixel perfect collision so the player could push blocks around the map. I gave up on this after banging my head for an hour. I know it’s possible, but I was losing time trying to figure it out. Instead I made it so if you touch a block it moves on its own in the direction you pushed it. The block will stop at the edge of the screen and you have to give it an extra push to lock in the shape shift.

This actually ended up being a more fun mechanic than I had originally intended so it works out. Tomorrow I will be figuring out a way to turn this mechanic into an actual game. Time for some sleep. Hope everyone’s having a good time!

Woke up – phase 1 Brainstorming

Okay so I woke up at 4:30 am checked my phone saw the theme and fell back to sleep. Now its 7am and the kids have been fed and its Ludum o’clock. So starting with some brainstorming for an idea as off the bat I don’t quite have one to run with. I tried asking my children what a shapeshift game would be like and their suggestions were

4yo- a princess games where the princesses are dancing and shapes make them do different dances

2y0- SUPERHEROES!!! FLY!!! HIT,HIT,HIT!

first few ideas i have had haven’t really given me that ooh yeah I want to make that game/That is achievable within the 48hr time frame.

Detective game hunting a shape shifting criminal

Shmup where the craft you pilot changes and shapeshifts, adaptive soundtrack, randomly generated enemies, low fi pixel art……wait i am just describing Luftrausers….god damn you Vlambeer you beautiful genius’s

Platformer where you change your shape to overcome obstacles

Physics game where you have to load random shapes onto the back of a moving truck and drive them a distance within a time limit

FTLite where you play a match three game to generate shapes you can then spend in key areas to power your ship

actually I don’t mind a couple of those…hmmm anyway

Time – 5 hours gone
Idea – In flux
Coding – Not started
Testing – Not started
Art – Not started
Audio – Not started

So of to a less than flying start

I’m in and ready to go!

Just woke up (8 o’ clock here in Germany), got an idea, and am ready to go!

I’ll be using Flash + Starling, Paint.NET, and Red Bull to stay awake, I guess 😀

Have fun and good luck everyone!

Current Progress

I’m gonna use this LD to focus on animation and build a game off of the character’s functions. I only have a standing animation tonight, so tomorrow will be movement, shapeshifting, and just general asset work and level design.

So anyways, here’s my stand:

So, let’s start?

Only me, python, and may be some fun

Getting scary!

Took me hours to get an idea. It’s not original, not much fun right now and I’m not sure how to build most of it…

Also, it’s bedtime. And I clearly need it: I wasted way too much time on highschool math and I divided an int with an int *facepalm*

LD35 Friday Night

Good thing that tomorrow is another day :-)

Going for the jam instead!!

Just woke up, and i decided to go for the jam instead just so i have some more time 😛

I will be streaming most of the day here: https://www.twitch.tv/coborax_hd

Good luck to everyone! 😀

Progress!!!

progress and stuff

done:

  • collisions
  • running
  • jumping
  • shooting (kinda)
  • tilemaps setup

Not in but making games

I’m not “officially” participating this weekend because of a poor scheduling (or maybe it’s a good thing). I’m leading a workshop tomorrow of 2nd-3rd graders on how to make video games! I’ll show them LD and what people are working on, and we’ll see if we can throw together a little game.

Anyways, this amazing work of graphical beauty is me trying to get set up for that. Hopefully I’ll have a little generic game thinggy and we can drop the kids artwork and sounds in and add their ideas for gameplay. I’m using HaxeFlixel and haven’t really used that much before so I’m having to figure out everything. I finally got Spriter animations importing and figured out how to link them to a FlxSprite, probably not the best way to do it but it’s working so that’s good. The purple dude is a Spriter animation with two linked bones, and the red box is a FlxSprite for gameplay/collision purposes.

I’ll be watching everyone’s progress and I’ll post what me and the kids are working on, though it won’t be an actual jam entry. Next time I’ll schedule things better, seems like a really good theme this time.

I’m in!

Forgot about posting this! I’m in. I’ll be using game maker once again. I have no idea about what to do but I’ll work something out!

Mazesssssss!

Awesome mazes! 😀progress

The Evolution of Hero

LD1

Playing around with sprites and writing a custom sprite-sheet code wrapper for all of our animated objects in the game. This is an example of how dramatically a hero can change in just 45 minutes! Haha! (#ProgrammerArt)
