LD35 April 15–18, 2016

I have decided that I don’t have enough time to participate…

This Ludum Dare I knew I didn’t have time .. I was limited to about 15 hours of participation.

I thought I should give it a shot anyway but I think I’ve already made up my mind I’m not doing this at this point. I wasn’t prepared enough for this 15 hours challenge and I don’t feel like resuming.

Also I had no base code so everything is moving extra-slowly…

Still I’ve managed to learn something new, which is programming to canvas with JS.

Here’s the progress I’ve made so far:

If you’re interested in looking at where I stopped (for code references or for adopting the idea [i don’t really care], or even if you’re just VERY bored) here we go:

(This is web-based)

So yeah so far I’ve participated 3 times… but this time I’m not participating..

I hope I’ll get the chance to participate once again in the future.

Have lots of fun and good luck!

Brain storming results :D

This is our idea… I think you get it 😀

Done with the Basic Mechanics?

What a difficult theme! I have decided to work on a shmup with a Dark Souls-like stamina mechanic (in addition to the shapeshifting).

Don’t know what it is but it has hexagons so I dig it.

Back in progress

Hi!

Im now fully charged after a good nights sleep and is back making my game.

My game is about a small boy which does everything to get to the cookie jar and to get there, he uses his ability to shapeshift using his toys to obtain powers. In the picture below, he shapeshift into a werewolf using a werewolf doll and that power gives him the ability to destroy certain walls and objects to reach his beloved cookies. More toys/abilitys is in development right now, such as fairypower (to move objects). It is a strategic puzzlegame with many ways to go! Thats all for now! I will be posting more soon!

We’re in!

Hello, Ludum Darers!

We are participating in Jam again, and now with a team of three:

  • Igor, developer
  • Kicu, artist
  • Roman, developer

And the game. It will be an infinite runner about a train that can transform into zeppellin and back at will. Numerous enemies and obstacles will be spawning all the time, and ideally player will be incentivized to switch between states. Hopefully there will be weapons too.

We’ll be developing in Unity, and actually today we are lucky to have a little bit of starting codebase (I’ve started working on an infinite runner game and spent on it a few hours; it’s a different kind of runner, but some physics and mechanics should be transferrable; there are pretty much no gameplay rules implemented yet, just gravity, camera movement and parallax).

aaand I have the perfect idea and none of the skills to do it. Anyone remember the game Torin’s Passage? The purple little creature can morph into stuff it has seen before and it’s always useless and hilarious. I think it deserves its own game. Feel free to use that idea, I will be doing something requiring less art and more coding.

Yes that was an amazing game 😀

Good luck with whatever it will become in the end! :)

Tools :

– Unity
– Aseprite |PyxelEdit (I’ll use both)
– Bosca Ceoil |LMMS |FL Studio (don’t know how to use them, so I’ll figure out later how I can manage to do something decent)

Objective :

– Finish something !

Too early

That’s what happens when you do stuff before you think. I wasted like 2 hours trying to implement a mechanic, that, in hindsight, would take me whole 2 days. That means I just lost 2 hours of time and a lot of productivity.

Everyone, plan your games beforehand. Don’t do like me.

Made my music & sfx before the end!

I did it! For the first time in my LD-career I’ve made my music and sfx on the first day, instead of trying to frantically fix it in the wee hours of the night. I’m mighty proud of myself, even if it’s beepbox (http://www.beepbox.co/) and me trying to remember to play the guitar (Audacity noise removal is your friend, here).

Pleased! Now, on to the real work!

I am in! Third time!

Hi people, I am in, time to create a game, well at least I hope! :)

I am going to make a sort of shape the cubes correctly before the time goes up game.

My equipment is going to be the same as the last time:

  • Unity3d
  • Blender
  • Gimp

I wish you all good luck and a lot of fun!

First hours and it starts to shape :V

5 hours later, I’m starting to see some light. I’ve started late, mainly because the time zone (I’m from Spain). This is the second time I develop for the Ludum Dare, and the first time I do it solo (time will tell if I can arrive for the compo deadline or if I will give me some time and external resources for the jam).

Shapeshift was one of the themes I did not like from the beggining, too many work to do some early ideas I had when I saw the theme. Then, I’ve spent the first hour and a half brainstorming like hell to find ideas that will be easy enough for a programmer to implement, and more important, to draw… because programmer art, you know.

Finally I’ve decided to make something inspired by Hexagon and it’s dodge mechanic but technically simpler.

The initial idea for the game is simple. You are in a laberinth like level and you can move around. In the background you can see another level, and when a short countdown beats, the background map will switch to the front. If you are in a clear tile, you can continue, if not, you’re dead. The more time you stand, the faster levels will switch. Will you be able to move fast enough to adapt?

Next you can see a first sketch of how it will look like, black walls, transparent floor and in the background the next level. You are the red circle and the line shows a “correct movement”.

ld35_mockup

I had some technical difficulties because I use a custom engine from a friend of mine and teammate on the last LD and I’m not used to it, but now I have a level loaded and I can move around. Next stop, level switch mechanic.

Finally got some time to start working on my entry

I thought I’d only have time on Sunday, but I got some free time on my computer now and will probably have some more time later. YAY!

Even though I wouldn’t be able to start working on anything, I saw the theme as soon as it was announced (kudos for mobile network access… to think I didn’t use it until a few months earlier…). ‘Shapeshift’ got me thinking on the following things:

  • slime that has to stealthily walk through enemies (changing into furniture and stuff)
  • kirby (grab abilities from enemies and turn into them/grab characteristics from them)
  • ninja that has to turn into enemies to mislead ’em (well, pretty similar to my first idea)
  • Something weird related to transforming polygons into other polygons

The slime/ninja idea seems too simple (as in, a lot of people are probably doing that)… And I actually think that the kirby one also falls into that category…

Oh, well, let’s see what happens. XD

On a side note, my github repo is already up on https://github.com/SirGFM/ld35. I only really put my own template (https://github.com/SirGFM/GFraMe_game_template) there, so it still has got nothing, really…

I’ll try to keep you guys updated, but I probably won’t be able to check what you’re all doing… =/

See ya! o/

Dropping out

Hey guys.

It is with a heavy heart that I have to drop out of this one… My lover of 5 years decided that due to his mental state he no longer wanted to be in a relationship… I have no focus, or even motivation to keep going strong on this LD. Maybe next time won’t have such a bombshell dropped on me.

The feels… Get better soon and take care of yourself. It’s more important than a silly game jam!

Sad to hear abt that.. take a break and take care of yourself will meet you back on next LD..

Core mechanics done!

So, my core mechanics have been finished! Here’s a gif:

But whoever you are? How does that work?

Glad you asked! In the game, there will be several items available for you to pick up. You can then become those items! Cool, huh? You can see in the example above we have the circle item, which means we can become it! No idea what I’ll do of this, but I hope I finish! Good luck to y’all and have fun!
