Actually starting…
Didn’t get together til 1, and then we bought food, planned game etc, so now we are actually starting on the code. Excited to see the game start taking shape!

The first level’s map is finally starting to come together.
I’ll give $20 to whoever can guess what fictional map this map is based off of!

Hope you all are going well, and aren’t too sleep deprived yet!
(It’s nearing 1am here…)
Mine will be a 2D top-down puzzle game, inspired by The Talos Principle, Portal and of course Sokoban. The idea is that you can only perform particular actions when you’re in a certain shape (sorry about the squeezed GIF):

All the gameplay mechanics are in place: player movement, keys and doors, crate pushing, and of course shapeshifting! (Well, colour shifting at the moment.) The game gives you hints about what you can and cannot do.
There’s even a progress tracker / level switcher, which also lets me reload levels on the fly, which took just a few minutes to build but will save me so many restart cycles.
I have 5 levels so far, and I’m planning to have at least 5 more, for a total of hopefully 15 or so. This is my first time working with Haxe and HaxeFlixel, so I’m happy with my progress, but I’m still a bit nervous about still having over half the levels, a storyline, graphics, sound effects and music to be done tomorrow. But gameplay-wise, I think this is pretty solid already.

Good lucky you all!

Last night, I thought a lot about the theme. But I also thought a lot more about what I could actually accomplish. I haven’t written a game in a long time, and am not familiar with the libraries. I’ve always been bad at graphics. I don’t know how much time Sunday I’ll have. So, I decided to stick with what I know best: text adventures. What I did with most of my childhood. No GOTOs this time.
Here’s where I was at when I went to bed:

That’s just Kanye Ipsum, not real text. But I have two rooms, with choices, and you can move between them. Success!
Next up is to write the “you win” code, and load the rooms from files rather than hardcoding them in the source. Then, to write the story….
I think these posts are much more fun to write when we’ve already gotten started a bit and can give you a hint of what we’ll be making this time, so here goes.
This is Ava’s 11th LD and her 6th together with Marte and 3rd together with Morten. Here are the ones Ava and Marte have done so far, Morten being present for the last two of them:

Our work is usually divided all over the place. This time it looks something like this:
Ava and Morten have both also done 3D graphics before, but we don’t really need that this time.
A game! We shan’t reveal the whole shenanigans for now (hint: certain animals shift their shape in one way or another), but we’re letting the theme inspire us both mechanically and narratively. You’ll see. Ava and Morten are currently busy implementing one mechanic each, while Marte is piecing together a level.
For now, gaze at glorious prototyping graphics that will be refined as we go (in order of who’s working on it: Morten, Ava, Marte):

This one is apparently obligatory, or so the tradition says. I think it goes something like this…
Woohoo!

No, robo-ant!
Try to avoid those laser beams !!

We’re 2 Industrial Designers currently fast on our way to make up for lost time (curse you timezones!)
Currently working on a small physics puzzle-game where you interact only with the level in order to guide your player to its final destination.

Quick mockup of what the game should look like.
We currently have the physics under control and most of the art-work done.

We are on air!!!

See you!!
I’ve attempted the last two competitions but never finished anything in time, maybe this time I will? Here’s my progress:

I’m going for an endless survival against a spree of furious creatures, they are next on my to-do list.
Pluto has been assigned the task of Cleaning Up All The Crap From The Annoying Earthlings. Absorb and grow, dear friend.
Help the universe de-clutter useless junk like astrocats, fishbones, asteroid belts, dwarf planets, weird stuff like the ISS and gargantuan space telescopes.
‘What does it say on the side?’
‘Hubble…’
‘DID YOU SAY… RUBBLE?’
‘No, I–’
‘Get rid of it!’
This is the kind of sophisticated dialogue you might expect from a depressed planetoid.
…anyway.
…this is our orbital test

(please click the flash file for an actual MOVING GRAPHICS screen!) (need to turn those glows down, whoops)
Tune in next time for the T.R.U.M.P.-3000 astrobots… otherwise known as Earth’s Greatest Offence!
‘There is so much punctuation in this name! I cannot… I just cannot handle…’ -the Pluto formerly known as a planet
The longer TRUMPbots are in space, the more rubbish they spit out. Unlike standard space junk, Pluto derives no energy boost/mass-gain from coming into contact with this nonsense, and must avoid it instead.

My progress so far…..
And I’m changing my game concept because the first idea was too complex.
Last night I felt I had pretty good progress, though I got caught up with my obsession with Unity Editors to ‘make things quicker’ but I’m nippin’ that in the bud real quick. I felt a bit wary that many people would be doing a Stealth game for the theme, as it’s pretty much the only thing that came to mind as far as what a ShapeShifter would do. Was trying to think of a way to make more of a business economic sim where you’re building different Shapes for each Shift but I couldn’t really think of how to make it compelling…
So instead, we’ve got a Cat Burglar that uses Catnip to shape shift. He’ll be stealing a Top Hat, Monocle, and Cane. The Top Hat is not a shape he shifted into in the following:

Hi, this is my first Ludum Dare.
Finally, I got some gameplay on the screen: http://cdietze.github.io/quads/
I wanted to do some sort of puzzler. Initially, something like match-3 or threes.
But it came out more like Sokoban. Now I added worm-like behavior for the player which I am quite content with right now.

Anyways, the tech I use:
PlayN (http://playn.io/) which is Java and also compiles to HTML.
No GFX-Tool or Audio Tool used yet 😉
Oh god, oh god, oh god.
My first ever Ludum Dare – 14 hours and 20minutes in and still so much on the list – animations, sound, a handful of level-elements and a couple enemies left to do.
At least the sprites for shapeshifting, all the player controls and the dungeon generator are done – I should’ve gone for a much smaller scope, but now that I’m already working on it, I have to finish this. It probably won’t be pretty, it probably won’t be any good, but it will be finished in time. 😉

C++ with raylib.
Art done with GIMP.
