JAFFA, KREE!

Screen Shot 2016-04-16 at 11.49.52 PM

My game is a multiplayer reaction game. You play as a loyal Jaffa who is a servant to Anubis. You must slay shapeshifters before opposing Jaffa/Gods/Players slay the shapes. It is not playable at the moment but I am done for the day and there is a fun (multiplayer) soundboard which will only be in the game during development. More tomorrow, good luck all game makers!

Game Done!

New design and game mechanic are done…

Just need to create a ton of levels… Look by my Twitter to see the GIF’s : https://twitter.com/tim_benjamin_42

Second day coming to a close

Spaceshift

Click for higher quality or if the GIF doesn’t animate.

So it’s been a long one, but it’s been productive. Building is in, as are all the effects associated. I’ve also added level boundaries so you can’t escape into the endless void, so that’s good.

I’d been hoping to add basic enemies today as well, but I figure I can squeeze that in to tomorrow without pressing things too much. All in all, today went well, and I’ve got high hopes for the future!

Need some art advice grounding obstacles with background

Calling artists and artsy types. Please can you give me some advice on how to ground my obstacles (the gears in the image below) with the background. They look like they’re floating on top. I tried to make them a bit blurry but that didn’t seem to help.

Thanks in advance.

I won’t claim to be artsy, but I do know that bright colors tend to be perceived as closer objects whereas darker, duller, more muted colors tend to be perceived as more distant objects.

What Skipi said. Have your gears darker and your moving characters brighter

Saturday Update

I got a lot done today. All systems working, and got to some model and texture work too.

I have to resist falling into a texture/model trap tomorrow, and finish the game rounds logic, and scoring.

Making Critters

This is my first time, and I’m so excited!!! I’ve never even worked with physics before, so this is the perfect opportunity, right?

The game is about plankton, and my sweetheart is doing some art for it. I think it’ll be pretty good, but I’m not sure I can finish in time.

The shapes that shift around in our hearts

Trying to make a game; accidentally made a fine piece of avant-garde art.

PROGRESS:
-100% done w/ story/dialogue

-halfway done with music

-3/4ths of the way done with code

-1/16th of the way done with art

-0% done with level design and voicework. Yikes!

Follow me on Twitter (@falloneus) for the next time the stream goes live on Twitch! I want to be more intentional about seeking other folks’ work out tomorrow too; we’ve come in contact with a few of you who were so nice as to join chat and give your perspective and laugh with us :)

awesome and funny stream -can’t wait to play you guy’s game!

Going On

So far so good :)  Cant wait to finish!
All the best (:  Everyone!

Progress!

Hey everyone! I was totally lost the the theme was announced and I had no ideas. But luckily I had a small idea (6 hours ago) and it seems to be working fine.  I’m not sure if it fit’s the theme, but…

It’s a puzzle game where you have to move from tile to tile trying to get as many points as you can. You can only move if your color or shape matches the target tile. When you touch it, you shapeshift and take it’s shape and color.

I’m not convinced of how it looks, but hey! I’m working solo for the first time!

Good luck to everyone!

Complete-ish soundtrack

This is the first time that I’ve participated in Ludum Dare, and the first time I’ve designed a game for a game jam. The game involves having to move a group of blobs around so that they fit into a particular pattern. We haven’t come up with a title yet but here’s the soundtrack.

The soundtrack is designed to be played with the segments shuffled around as the game goes, and such that the game can crossfade between tracks when changing level sets. To that end, everything’s in the same key and at 80BPM or a multiple thereof.

The songs sound great! I really enjoy “Spooky”. Looking forward to your game!

Look after yourselves!

Fellow Gamedevs,

Woke up this morning with jaw pains due to stress and tension during sleep. Decided to get and have a 5km run. At the moment, I am exhausted but my mind is clear and my body is ready to shut down for my brain to go to 200% efficiency. I just want to say: TAKE CARE OF YOURSELVES

And remember: “Trees cover up a multitude of bugs” @BobRossGameDev

ShapeShift

All I could have done so far is to finish the character! Time to animate it now and make it work!

I still have a lot to do to finish the game, but I’m happy with my shapeshift mechanic!

That’s some amazing manipulation there. Does the player get to adjust their animal companion? I see so many possibilities. Can’t wait to see more.

Nice, you’re a creature creator dealio!? Really cool how you made the parts switch shapes and not just scale. Nice work!

Cool mechanics!

End of day 1, finally resembles a game!

For better or worse quite a few tools are being learned during this particular blitz, but the early results look quite promising!

From this point the most important things will be adding the custom collision with resting/death (depending on speed), a few gentle tutorial-falls before the full RNG opens up, then the oh-so-much-desired sound. Hmm, it’ll also be nice to increase the terminal-velocity over time (right now it’s simmering at a meager 20 meters per second).

Given how cumbersome it’s been to model the controller-letter shapes in Blender (even just the X and Y), I’m not too hopeful that I’ll make it to the A/B/L/R buttons for added difficulty. Still, it’s possible that those pieces will be done for the Jam!

Seeing the End to a Long Corridor

I can’t remember the last time I’ve gotten to work on a game for 6 hours straight.  It’s been pretty crazy, but I’ve got a ton done.

I now have incremental maze generation on the frontier with visibility tracking:

Mikeware - MLN - 3rd Screenshot

Tomorrow, I finally get to implement my primary movement mechanic… which is what the game will be all about and make it much more interesting.  Then I get to add ‘game’ things to my game to start wrapping things up, and maybe work on a title screen… and expose the keyboard control setting option to switch which way is ‘up’ (I have the input flag already in code).

7 Hours In

I started at about 9:00 pm today (well, technically yesterday) and now it’s 4:00 am, so I’m 7 hours in. I have most of the core mechanics down and I made the background music while taking a break from coding. The game is based on the game Mafia, but a little different, so it can be adapted to be a single player video game.  Basically, there’s a shape-shifter in town who kills a villager each night and stashes their body in a random garbage can. It’s your job as a police officer to discover who the shape-shifter is, by learning each person’s speech patterns or by discovering bodies of people who have been killed, and kill him before he can kill anyone else.

Time for alien hunting with some serious detective work and… Knife.

Ok! First level A.K.A Garden party is completed!

Also, here is my progress.

I have:

  • Post process effects
  • Completed dialog system.
  • First level
  • Lots of unimportant sentences!

What next?

Create some pissed aliens and some more enviroment. In next post, i finally write some more about my game! So… Stay tuned!

Almost done

My idea was pretty simple so I’m more or less done. Have added sound and music so thinking about what to do next :) It’s an HTML5 game mainly aimed at desktop browsers but I’m thinking about maybe adding better mobile/touch device support.
