Usually we can’t always make what we made up in our minds, but do not give up. Try to tone down the expectations and strip away some game elements. A simple game can every bit as fun as a complex one, they’re just different. There’s still plenty of time :)

hey, just put the code-y-tech-ie stuff away for a bit and make some pixels or sounds or craft some ideas. I’ve fallen into the trap of tech-fatigue/too much tech focus many times, tech makes one gray and sleepy inside (at least that’s what I’ve experienced)… let the ideas lead the tech, and keep it simple as possible (that’s what I’m trying to tell myself as well right now ;P )

Make a simpler game?

Building Custom Editors

Well they aren’t the greatest editors but they will make building my levels a lot easier.

After that I am going to churn out 5-6 levels. Put in the win state and then a last little mechanic if I can.

I guess some shuteye is needed though 😉

Anyone got some usefull tips for custom Unity editors? I am not making to much progress here.

Meet the characters

Having spent first half of the day on not very successful coding, i decided to do some sketches now and here are the results.

Here go main characters of my upcoming epic (don’t expect too epic art, though):

Aalto a.k.a. “scientist one”
Aalto's portrait

Sasha a.k.a. “scientist two”
Sasha's portrait

And, of course, The Great Leader (a.k.a. “great leader”)
Sasha's portrait

I’ve got no clue

Like the title says, I have no clue on what kind of game to make. I started out with an idea, but I realised I won’t be able to get it to a playable state, so what now? I need new ideas!

When I struggle with ideas relating to the theme I kinda just say screw it and make something completely random that I’ve wanted to make for a while. Nothing gets me more productive than a jam time constraint.

Write a post with a description of your idea and ask for help in stripping it down. I’ll try to help, and I’m sure others will too.

When I saw the theme “Ancient Technology” I didn’t have a clue of what to do. What me and my friend did was basically Google this theme, search for types of ancient technologies and think of game possibilities with them. I suggest you do the same. We ended up with 5 ideas from 3 different “game-makeable” technologies. Of course we chose only one of them and we’re making progress 😀

Progress Report (9 hours in)

Anyone recognize the inspiration yet?

GIF-TASTIC

The graphics are very much temp at the moment. Luckily I’m not in charge of the final visuals.

FREAKIN DINOSAURS

Since everybody seems to post on their progress i thought i could at least offer a little screenshot. Progress is pretty slow but as i read through the last posts i realize i’m not alone with this “problem”. It’s also my first game jam ever so honestly problems were to be expected. I’m still not 100% sure where i want to go with my game but i’ll do my best to flesh out gameplay tomorrow.

The promised screenshot:

Restarting… already. :P

We actually didn’t get started until this morning, and 4 hours in we’re restarting from our fps (y’see why we’re restarting?) on to a super secret game involving magnets. More to come soon!

Going well

So I should mention that I am of course in for the jam, I will be using Haxeflixel, Atom and whatever I can find hanging around for attempting “art”. So far I have my core idea down, map generation is looking good and I am starting to work on some lighting before attempting to make it look nicer.

The basic idea is to go for something similar to Sabre Wulf, You walk around the maze to find 4 parts of an Ancient Tech (still have no idea what it will be yet). Gif below is a zoomed out view to check generation.

That is mostly me done for the day, Oh and if anyone knows of a better way to make a gif other than Screen to Gif I would love to know :)

First time!

This is my first entering, and so far I’m having loads of fun. This is my progress so far and clearly what you see is subject to change.

I used Gamemaker Studio btw.

pretty good for your first. :)

getting started

for the most part, thing are progressing smoothly, albeit slower than I had hoped.

So far, all I have done is make the animation tool I plan to be using with html5 canvas, and created a small walkcycle

I plan to do something of an adventure game where you run around as a robot created by a long dead civilization, right now the focus is on getting the world to display correctly and make it so you can navigate it. Once I’ve accomplished that I’ll start implementing the puzzle ideas, although there may not be enough time to implement more than one or two.

Here’s a little gif of the Player Character and his walkcycle (the framerate’s higher when running, promise)

Starting late

Just now starting. I was lazy last night.

With luck I’ll be able to have something playable at least by the end of the jam.

I’m trying to brainstorm ideas – something that’d be decently entertaining but that I also think is feasible in the short time I have and that fits the theme.

That’s always hard to do. Will update when I have a more solid idea.

Ancient Wall & DickHead

I’m a bit late but found a starting point:

some progress..

a musicassette-based puzzle…

screen

5 hours work. Going pretty slow.

I only got 3 and a half hours sleep! Help.

Despite this I got down to work this morning and began by setting up my player. First I programmed movement and then I got down to character design and animation. Check out the gif below.

After that I decided to do some more work on the gameplay, and added a talking system. I’m entering the jam so I salvaged some code from a recent project and convinced it to work with this game. Here’s a gif of some test dialogue.

Overall I’m proud of what I’ve got so far but kind of wish I had more. Anyway I’m off to get some more art assets ready.

lovely UI!

Map Building

Time to start building our map, all environmental tiles are complete, just a matter of adding them in!

First break!

Considering I started coding 4(?) hours ago this might be a early one but my eyes are weak.
No cursor but here is the menu. Glorious placeholders as always.

Turns out Im out

So dang, I’m out of this Ludum Dare, because I have to travel tomorrow for about 8 hours, so I’ll only have a few hours on the PC to do stuff, since i have to pack today.

it was pretty much a last minute announcement and i didnt know until now

In

More than 12 hours late, lost to sleeping and thinking about what to do, I finally have an idea, so, I’m in for the jam! We’ll see how far I can get.

After having this happen to me on my previous ludumdare entry, I’m beginning to think of these late starts as a personal tradition T_T
