IMPORTANT QUESTION

AARGH. I seem to be encountering cmake and such difficulties and I have not worked on my game itself as a result since 12:13 AM. Can I change my game making tool to something that I have which requires less time consumption so I can get a game finished by submission hour?

I think you can! There usually isn’t much restrictions in that sense.

Long way home

First day is done, and things are not looking particularly good.

I've been in this place before.

I’ve been in this place before.

Usually I’m most interested in developing systems-heavy games. Start with simulationist leanings, toss in wonky AI with seemingly unclear motivations and finish up with open-ended gameplay – surefire recipe to keep me coding ’til break of dawn. (Also the most probable reason for why I’ve finished only a handful of all the projects I have started…)

So of course this time I wanted to make something at the opposing end of the spectrum. Bespoke, linear content. Something I could actually finish without regrets this weekend, instead of lamenting all the systems I had to drop to make the deadline.

I didn’t much care for the theme this time. I had a general idea coming in – real world setting, exploration, minimal-to-non-existent mechanics. A walking simulator, frankly. Luckily I was already planning to use early FPS aesthetics, Build-engine is pretty ancient technology at this point, right?

The thing is… turns out I’m just bad at making content. Trying to wrestle boxes and sprites into something resembling a neighborhood was tedious and took most of the day. At this point I have maybe 15% of the map made. If I don’t find some major shortcuts or ways to make my workflow faster, I’ll be unlikely to finish this during compo. Maybe jam is better idea anyway, I could make use of all the CC0-material I’ve acquired over the years.

Overall, I’m not particularly happy of the progress so far but hey, there’s still another day to come. Also… there’s certain ambiance I like about in it. I wanted to capture something of the quiet, windy fall nights that finally came after hot and blazing summer. Looking at the little diorama I managed to cobble together today, I think I succeeded.

Take a look for yourself. See?

Those GIFS look quite good to be honest! I really think you’ve captured the mood you’re aiming for.

Time to go to bed

After the frustrating first hours of the day, I now have a solid idea, and will hopefully be able to finish it.

This is how it looks right now. I got a lot to do still, but I think I’ll manage it. Programming is my strong suite after all 😉

For now, good night!

I’m in…

Feeling unmotivated for some inexplicable reason, but decided to give it a go anyways. Gotten some basic mechanics and some art down at least.

I’m Out

Somehow, with all the stress, I’ve forgotten that LD36 was happening this weekend. Which is silly, because I voted all the way to rounds 3 and 4.

I swear, I’ll actually make a game for Ludum Dare someday.

You have over 2 days to work before The Jam ends. . . Come on! Get to work you still have time! Mine is already completed and I think I did very good. You still have plenty of time to go work and make a good game before The Jam Ends.

First Day Over

First day of my first jam over.
It was a very fun day: met new people, learned a lot, learned even more, and slept only 5 hours.
Ludum Dare so far is being one of the best experiences ive ever had, from sharing my own progress to being jelly of other people’s awesome games. Ludum Dare is a place to learn and have fun.
Hope you all do, at least.

Golems!

I’m not sure golems are actually “technology” but I have one modelled, animated and exported into three.js.

golems

I’ve had a few challenges.

  • The Blender three.js exporter doesn’t seem to want to export multiple animations, so I had to do multiple exports and merge the (JSON) export files together manually.
  • I thought it would be interesting to try Scala.js (having not written any Scala before), so it’s been a learning experience!
  • The three.js bindings for Scala.js don’t support skeletal animation, so I had to enhance them.

My progress so far is up at https://matt-williams.github.io/ld36/ – no gameplay yet, though!

End of day 1

Ok, I got to the end of day 1- missed most of it(12+hours!!!) which will be made up for in the third day… I’m going to enter in the jam because of it. Good thing there isn’t a rating system for this LD!

Here is the progress so far (~4 hours worth):

Capture

First of all I must say that I am trying to work on a limited colour set (only 8 colours, minus the background shading).

My whole idea is that you are exploring a temple and must use the drawings on the wall as hints to help you progress to the red button on the top right hand corner of the screen. In this example, the cave drawing shows an up-arrow, a person holding some sort of parachute, and a small fire beneath. This means that the player must use a parachute and hold it up over the fire to elevate themselves over the wall!

I was thinking of having a neat little inventory system to hold items, but I’ve opted for only one item at a time instead, to make it more challenging (and easier for me to code :P)

They’re all looking great, good luck and I can’t wait to play them! 😀

R’lyeh mystery – progress 3

R’lyeh mystery – progress 3

Dark was the night, but i had a light.

R'lyeh mystery

Well, i just implemented mechanism for using things… And now… Is time to sleep 😀 I am really too old for all-nighter 😀

I’m in !

I’m in and I’m having so much fun right now !

I doing a game I wanted to do for a while, just a silly idea, and the theme match (kinda) so, i decided to try it this morning.

I’ve been training in blender those past days and i’m really happy with my today modeling !

I’ll be using unity as the game engine.

Here is what I have after the first day of work : I may have to post as a jam submission, I still have a lot of stuff to do 😮

Mummy’s Boom Update #2

Welp, I now have the basic engine and gameplay down for Mummy’s boom and now now building the levels / transitions and extra junk. I’ll replace the placeholder graphics and add fun retro sound effects tomorrow.

So far, this game is much more of a .. game than my previous entry. It has sort of evolved into a puzzle game, which is fun and unexpected. It will undoubtedly have lots of bugs, but I’m probably just going to include a ‘reset level’ button just incase anyone gets stuck in a wall or whatever.

Onwards to more levels!

Update From First Day

This is my first jam participation so I can think like compo is just starting. (Kidding.)

Here is something. Game will be alchemy + medical.

Good Progress so Far

Doing really well so far with what I have planned, so far the main things I’ve done are:

  • Building rooms
  • Worker AI
  • Resource production and requirements for building

I therefore should be able to finish fairly easily tomorrow.

End Day 1

What do you guys think of basic models ?

Game Name : Aliens vs Ancient Indians

What do you guys think of basic models created by me for the game? Enemies at top player at bottom.

Being programmer i am doing full fledged 3d model now only using Blender.

Also as i am developing the game as 3D i dropped godot and moved to unity.

Second update: JRPG hockey??

Hello again!

We posted an update earlier today with some very crude beginnings:

The trio is back! With sportsing!

We’ve now come a bit further, and 2/3 are asleep, and the last one is about to turn in as well. But how about a little update first?

Our first day has had work kind of separated so far.

Morten has been programming without any graphical assets:

View post on imgur.com

Ava has been working on those assets by animating a character without any character designs, just animating the rig and club:

Marte has been trooping along despite feeling ill, designing some of these characters, explaining why the animations look a bit weird (getting up really fast after falling; floaty feet): they’ve got hover boots!

character-anita

Woah! That hair. What’s with that? Well… Our idea is to make them very JRPG because our deal is to try and mix JRPG stereotypes with sport game stereotypes in a wonky way…

Maybe in the next update you’ll actually get to see what we have in mind for that ancient technology...
