LD19 December 17–20, 2010

Here we go again …

This’ll be my second Ludum Dare compo, and I plan to actually finish this time!

Last time (LD18), I spent far too much time creating my first spritesheet with a 3Dish viewpoint, which didn’t look great anyway as I’m a Code Monkey, not an artist.  This time, I’ve voted in the final round and have some rough ideas for games that I could make, depending on the final theme chosen, but all with something in common … simplicity!  That’s my plan for getting through this competition, keep things simple, get all basic functionality in place as quickly as I can, then polish things up if need be.

So, what’ll I be using?

Coding

  • Visual C# Express 2008
  • XNA Game Studio 3.1

Graphics

  • Inkscape
  • Corel Paint Shop

Sound

  • Audacity (Sound Effects, recorded using household objects and a microphone)
  • ACID Xpress 7.0 (Music, if there is enough time after everything else is in place)

Time-lining

I’m not going to use anything fancy for time-lining.  Last time I ended up just creating a basic we-bage that I updated with a table of events, and links to concept art, screenshots, and vidcaps.  This time will be no different, with my LD19 page available at http://www.bitshiftstudios.co.uk/Kal_LD19, and I’ll be updating my twitter from time-to-time (follow @Kalakian if interested).

Well that’s it for now, I’ll be going to my bed early tonight so I can get up really early and start on the competition, as it starts at 3a.m. here, so no point staying up late and starting off with sleep depravation … there’ll be time for that about half-way in 😉

Good luck to everybody!

Welcome to Ludum Dare 19!

A new Dare, a new Keynote. This almost didn’t happen (nobody had time to film one), but thanks to advanced internet technology, we have a bear-thing giving us the words of inspiration we all crave. Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s Ludum Dare time!

And if you want more keynote, hit the jump for a backup keynote created by mjau.

Sounds fun!

This is my first Ludum Dare that I plan on participating in. Music isn’t my thing so I may have to enter the Jam so my brother can help me. 😛 Otherwise, I’m looking forward to it! I just hope I can think of something creative to go along with whatever the theme turns out to be. :)

Enter the compo! You don’t need to have music, in fact most entries don’t have music.

Well, that was close

First time participant here.

Thought I was going to have to make a silent game earlier when my sound card appeared to disappear… then thought I was going to be unable to take part entirely when I dropped a screw into my (bottom mounted) PSU in the process of re-seating my sound card. But, after 20 minutes of fishing around in a sea of capacitors with a magnetic (and insulated) screwdriver, I somehow ended up with a system which still boots and has sound. Success!

I’m probably using Unity but it’s still slightly possibly I’ll switch to Python at the last moment. Other tools involved include Blender, LMMS and Paint.Net. Going to bed shortly so I can get up early tomorrow.

I. AM. READY.

So yeah, Notch got me into this. I’m Superyoshi, or Chris, random 16-year-old guy from Germany, trying to make something which comes remotely close to a game using FlashPunk for this Compo.

Yeah, I already have a basic idea and I just have to hope the theme fits it. Sadly, Teams are not allowed so get ready to get your ears and eyes raped. Except I find out how to use MIDI on Ubuntu. I bet some people here have an idea, if you have please contact me, I’m stuck with Qsynth/fluidsnyth D:

Also whoever gets the reference in the title first wins a cookie with whipped cream.

Notch’s blog is the reason I LD, too. I’ve been at it ever since LD16, though.

Totally in LD19.

Totally doing this thing. Using GameMaker8, SFXR, possibly Paint.net, and possibly Sonar 8. May include wheelchairs. Short sentences.

I suggested redundancy. Also, I suggested redundancy. 😀 😀

I’m just hoping that this being the week before semester finals wont slow me down. D:

LETS DO THIS THANG

Utility code

Some stuff to make writing with Haxe easier. I’ll tell everyone as I’ll probably use it.

If you don’t mind the bugs, you can use it, but I really wouldn’t recommend it!

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16895250/tools.zip

Got an unpleasant cold. Not fun.

2nd time… maybe

I entered a barely-playable entry back in 2006 for the swarms theme (as a ~15 y.o might I add) and I have returned to make something a bit more decent… in theory (my intent is to enter, but that isn’t set in stone – depends on theme)

Tools:

  • C/C++
  • Irrlicht
  • GIMP on a Fujitsu Stylistic tablet PC (I can’t draw for sh*t but I can’t make tolerable graphics on this device just purely because it’s tablet + display combined)
  • No idea about audio. May ignore it

My barebones codebase is here. It’s pretty crummy – a lot of it was written ages ago and doesn’t really reflect my current style/ability so please excuse its suckiness. And although it sucks it does normally work pretty well.

Complimentary Deskphotos :D

Yay, photos!

Quick notes: I’m working at a laptop, but it’s more like a portable desktop. Chews through power like a BEAST, and see those tiny speakers? yeah, borrowed them from dad. Bose, and seriously good. he’s not getting them back 😀

Yeah, there IS actually a desk under all that stuff

Her's a closeup 😀 Epic wallpaper as usual.

First time

So I stumbled upon this webpage yesterday, saw timer counting with around 20 hours left… And immediately thought – why not? It should be lots of fun and I can probably learn a few things along the way.
My tools: python+pygame, vim, GIMP and any sound generators I’ll come across.

Declaring some code

This is essentially the collision and camera code that flixel gives you, without flixel. If you have an allergic reaction to flixel, this could alleviate your pain.

Declaration of intent

Hi, I’m Tom 7.  I will do Ludum Dare 19. I’ve made some fairly complete games before, like Escape, and entered LD17 with Is Lands? (5th place Audio omg wooo).

I like to start fresh the moment the theme is announced, but I hereby declare that I will probably use my boilerplate preloader/collision code if I work in Flash, and will use SDLML and maybe my Box2D port if I work in SML. Both are available from my sourceforge svn. I love to do stuff from scratch. A blank untitled document is my favorite sight.

Going for LD48 instead!

I made a post a few days ago saying that some friends and I would be participating in the Jam. We’ve come to the consensus that we’re not quite prepared to delve in to a group endeavor yet and would like to have some practice outside of a competition before doing something like this. As a result, I will be competing in LD48 instead! Here’s a list of the tools I may or may not use:

I have to say thanks to Notch for making Metagun, because I learned about Ludum Dare through it and a bit about Applets and AWT. I hope I can finish my game for my first try at this, and I’ll see y’all in a bit!

Hehe,..lI also learned about LD through notch. For me it was his masterpiece “Beaking the tower”!

Slick 2D is a nice library, even handling thousands of sprites on screen without dramiatic fps drops. I’d use it too but Flash has easier deployment than java. I’d go with it though if I was going to make a bullet hell style game or something hardcore like that.

My Workspace

The surroundings aren’t really presentable… this is the important part though!

I intend to start this competition asleep

I’m Tom Francis, a writer and editor for PC Gamer, and this’ll be my first Ludum Dare. I’m in the UK and shattered, so I’m probably going to be asleep when the theme is announced, hoping to get an early start tomorrow. I’m rooting for Discovery or Containment.

I’m going to be using Game Maker, Paint.net and sfxr, which I only just discovered when reading up on the rules. A God send, I was almost resigned to silence.

My goal is to produce something that functions in any way. I’ll enter the competition if I end up with something eligible, however bad, the jam if not.

Best of luck to everyone, I’m as excited about playing yours as making mine.

My Declariation Of “trying it out”

This is my first Ludam dare, I have fairly little experience with making games as a whole

BUT THAT WILL NOT STOP ME FROM FAILING NOT HORROBLY

I hope…

My tools:

Game Maker 8 lite

Gimp

Super basecode!

Look at this demo of basecode

Basecode is like 90% done.

I can do better. Let me just open up my Text Edit… 😀

Why on earth are you rendering 3D in text mode?

I don’t believe it’s a question of “why do this”, or “why do that”. I think it’s more along the lines of “why not”.

My Declaration of Who Knows What?

I don’t know if I will be able to accomplish much this Ludum Dare.  Tomorrow might be all used up with other plans, but there might still be a possibility that something might get accomplished.

If I do participate I would like to try making something with Unity.  I’ve played around with it a little, but there are still a lot of things for me to learn.  I think it would be fun to try to at least make something small and simple with it.

The best-laid schemes…

I suppose I might as well jump in with this too, have a stab at it for the first time.

It’ll be interesting to see what I can come up with in the short time, especially since I’ll be in my bed in the UK sleeping when the theme is announced – though I doubt I’ll be entering the Dare competition anyway, just sticking with the Jam.

I’ve even yet to decide which theme I’m rooting for, and which development tools I’ll be using. Still, all the great artists were disorganised messes, right?

There are some of us, though, who are nervous wrecks and have already got most of the thing planned out because we’re excited about the thing. :)
