LD 43 November 30–December 3, 2018

Let's Try That Again

TLDR; 7 game jams went amazing, last one was the greatest disaster imaginable, hope this one goes better.

Did 7 game jams before, which all went spectacular. Tiny hiccups here and there, but overall, some of the absolute best experiences of my life.

Then did LD42.

  • Streaming software suddenly stopped working properly after running fine all week

  • Backup streaming option on a laptop stopped working for a different reason (was also working all week)

  • Various files vanished, Trello stopped working right, Twitch stopped working right, FB Live stopped working right.

  • Countless pieces of software broke for the first time in strange ways

  • The second we started actual work, our artist's laptop just didn't turn on. First time that's ever happened. Had to actually open it up to fix it.

  • Internet went completely out, not common, so went to second location.

  • Internet went completely out at second location, for the first time ever there.

  • Somehow a large bug (probably a fly) got into the top part of my water bottle, and I drank it and then spit out a half dissolved thing and got queasy and couldn't stop thinking about it the entire weekend (or any time I used that water bottle again. Finally got a brand new, totally different one last week, since I still couldn't shake that feeling of it in my mouth.)

  • While typing, suddenly I felt a stinging sensation on my hand. I looked down and there was blood on my hand. ZERO IDEA WHY. I washed it off, applied antiseptic and bandaids, but it kept hurting more, and also started bleeding more. I ended up with a huge scar on the top of my hand.

  • Our artist burned herself while cooking on Saturday night and ended up with the IDENTICAL scar on the same hand.

  • All of this so far happened on Saturday, and we basically had nothing done on Saturday night (usually it's almost done at that point and we polish and tweak for the rest of the weekend). We were really, really distressed from everything happening, and we should have just stopped and cut our losses, but we wanted to push through and prevail. So I stayed up late to get SOMETHING done, in terms of a prototype for some of our ideas, and all it resulted in was lots and lots of boilerplate code where I somehow forgot how zero indexing works (?) and typed this for every single for loop:

(int i=0; i < length-1; i++)

I didn't realize this until actually after the jam, and couldn't figure out why there were all these weird bugs with the last element of every array.

  • There was actually more stuff that weekend, weird personal stuff, for everybody involved, that came out of nowhere.

  • The game idea we did settle on, in that state of distress, was actually a really really good one, but it was one that we actually thought we wanted to develop into a full, long term project game, and for some reason in that state of confused distress we just started working on the actual code of that game, instead of making a fun prototype of it. Fully extensible in every way, procedurally generated, online and offline multiplayer, single player vs AI, an extremely complex graphics system... We actually implemented all of those systems (minus the AI) over the weekend, but didn't get around to actually making any gameplay with them yet. It got put aside, to eventually have each system reconstructed properly and build it up again from scratch, but is still on the to-do list while we finish a different game.

So, might do something particularly easy this time, to recover :)

Sidenote here

While we may be hyped right now, do note that getting the right amount of sleep is important. Pulling all-nighters may seem like the only option at times, but it's definiteley not healthy, especially in the long run. Just remember to get a good night's sleep tonight. Just wanted to put it out there. GLHF everyone!

Best platform to use?

Hello. I usually use pygame for making my games, but I think for the purposes of the contest it would be best to host it in browser. What do you recommend? Flash? Unity? Java?

I'm in Part 2 Electric Boogaloo

So. Here again after the disaster in LD42. We had no idea what we were doing, but now we (kinda) know what we're doing. So, yeah. Here's what we're using:

Art - Paint.net IDE - Atom Music / sound - Ardour Programming language - Assembly

JK we're using Python and Pygame not Assembly lol

In again!

Hyped as always to have another good compo.

GameMaker Studio 1.4.999 w/ companion IDE (self rolled for quality of life)... will be a good test for the IDE + myself to stick to the plan again.

Code - GML / C++

Art - Paint.net

Music - BoscaCeoil

Sound - Audacity+Whatever feels right

<9 hour hype train!!!

soon...

can't wait to do my first ludun dare <3

Hi to all!!!

This is my second time in LD Wish me luck xD

I hope im in! If i get a good idea im definitely in, but i might only have one day to do it. Ill be using the godot engine, aseprite and sfxr.

LD42 +1

LD42 +1

Unsure if this is a team )" thing, or solo; it depends on the theme. Which I have not looked at, but Leblane has. He may go solo, or we'll team up.

  • If solo, I'll be using

    • lÖve
    • emacs
    • Schismtracker/ Milkytracker/autotracker ( https://github.com/wibblymat/ld24/blob/master/autotracker.py )
    • jfxr ( https://jfxr.frozenfractal.com/# )
    • and likely I will use the graphics from opengameart.org (likely the tiny16 set, which uses the DawnBringer 16 palette which I really, really like.) * The reason for this is to allow me time to get the CODE done, rather than spending hours doing art, which is something I tend to do (: *
    • tiled ? Depends on game theme (:
  • So anyway, this is the post about "I am in" and later, there will be posts about the progress.

  • I will not be streaming, and I just set up gogs and kanboard locally in docker to track things. I will put the code up later, and of course if it is a jam entry, it will be shared for LeBlane. Also will use mynoise.net and the pomodoro mode for time tracking.

  • I may code at Klubi. Depends. Possibly not, as I am setting up here, and... yeah.

  • I have enough tea for the compo. Do need to hit the grocery store for fruit and more soup.

  • I am FAIRLY sure this is not the weekend to try to learn the new split keyboard; but I'm messing with it today a bit.

  • w007 markdown support :metal: tho I do a bit more in orgmode these days, markdown is absolutely awesome.

I don't think I'll be using the new keyboard we built (iris, split, my keymap) for this, but I am using it today a bit. Programmers, if you were thinking of getting a split mechanical orthagonal keyboard, I can reccommend doing it. It is worth it, though it is DIFFICULT to adjust. Also, get one using tmk or qmk firmwares so you can modify it to YOUR tastes/use.

First time.

Cannot wait for this event to kick off. It is my first attempt at something like this.. Good luck to everyone. I'll bee using unity3d.

We're IN!

Hey everyone!

Both me and hildebrandt are taking part in LD for the 2nd time this year. Last time we pulled all-nighters and what not, but we'll make sure not the repeat the same mistake this time around. Though, there WILL be lots of fast food again 🍕😋

Our tools 🔧🔨

  • Engine: Trusty Godot 3.1 Alpha 🤖
  • Art: Blender and Photoshop 🎨
  • Sound: BFXR and Bosca Ceoil 🎶
  • Fuel: Coffee and Mate ☕ 🍵 (google it if you don't know this wonder yet)

I'm the programmer but I'll also try my luck with art this time (that's the plan at least). We might also stream on twitch.

Anyways, glhf everyone! 🤞🏼

Well... that's going to be... interesting.

I am not really sure why I am writing this here... guess it's just too much to hold in myself...

Just today, literally one day before Ludum Dare I became officially unemployed. Can't say it was totally unexpected, but I still wasn't expecting this to happen this abruptly. :sob:

Well... at least I'll have more time to pursue my hobby project now.

Cele and Cris are in!

We'll be taking part this ludumdare as well! We'd like to do something multiplayer. Node.JS server and Unity client.

We'll keep you posted on https://twitter.com/crispintea

Good luck to everyone!

I'm in !

Hi guys, I'm back for a new jam !

Alone this time, I wanted to try another things than we do usually in jam. Now working in VR game development, I have a tons a ideas of interactions that I want to try, and if I experiment on many things at work, not all the things I want to do have their place over there. Even if I know that only a few people possess a VR headset this days, it worth the price to have the possibility to experiment freely and maybe get a fun mini game at the end.

Sadly, my entry will only support the Oculus Rift for now, I do not have an access to a Vive for the week end, but I will probably adapt it to the Vive later.

In the same time, many folks of the usual Zblah team works on their game too for LD43, take a look at it !

Software :

Unity / Visual studio

Probably ProBuilder for graphics

SDKs :

Oculus integration

VRTK

Good luck folks !

First LDJam - hopin' for a great experience!

Hey everyone! I'm in.

This is the first time I participate in a ludum dare jam and i'm really looking forward to the upcoming event. I'll participate together with Earl0fPudding and we will be using Unity3D. 🙃

I have a question though: Is it correct, that I have to add him to my game and he has to add me to his game after we followed each other? 🤔 Because I invited him to my game, but he didn't see any invitation or something else.

Whatever, have fun and good luck to all participants! 🎉

The unofficial Ludum Dare soundtrack

As many are preparing and hyping up for Ludum Dare (which i will joining as well), i find it only appropriate to get hyped to this awesome old song. Listen to it and get reminded of good ole' times!
