LD 42 August 10–13, 2018

Im in, but with fantasy console :)

Hey, this time i also make game with TIC-80 fantasy console, cause i didn't finish my in house haxe engine again :)
Anyway i hope this time i will make something fun.
And remember, theme not important, only game important :D

Good luck for everyone.

I'm In, for my first

Hello everyone, I am excited to be participating this weekend, I have done game development for a while, but never within the limit of a weekend, I wish everyone luck! =)

Theme Master List

Preface

I think I've been pretty harsh in voting and slaughtering. I've seen other people with 200-1000 accepted themes from slaughtering, while I had only about 40. My reasoning is a mix of: the theme should not imply the gameplay too heavily, the theme should not be a repeat of a previous event (though I don't have the knowledge to have managed that), and the theme should not be related to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

But now it's personal. I've spent my voting on themes that would be fun (in my very personal, subjective opinion) and that I feel instant inspiration from (that can be managed in 48/72 hours). Still seems pretty harsh.

Round 1

Shoutout to inconvenient super powers. It sounds like a theme so fun I'd build something around it outside of a jam. I actually like a lot of the ideas, but feel they're either too limiting/hard for a jam or too specific of a mechanic for a game. Vagueness seems to work best.

  • [-] One bullet
  • [-]One minute
  • [-] Dying planet
  • [0] Ancient world
  • [0] Two points of view
  • [-] Fragile
  • [+] It's spreading
  • [-] Inconvenient super powers
  • [+] Start with nothing
  • [-] Running out of space
  • [-] Nothing is explained
  • [0] If you don't see it, it doesn't exist
  • [-] Color as a gameplay feature
  • [+] One enemy only
  • [0] Build a dungeon
  • [-] Control two things at once

Round 2

I'm a sucker for rule-based limitations, but I don't know how well a lot of other people would handle them in a jam time limit. So between the round 3 rule-based theme and this round's one, I'd rather 3 rules. It's also far more open to interpretation.

  • [0] Light is key
  • [+] Evolve
  • [-] You start with everything and end with nothing
  • [-] Four elements
  • [-] Decay
  • [+] Use the enemies to win
  • [0] Duplication
  • [+] Expanding environment
  • [-] Safe in the dark
  • [-] Tiny machines
  • [+] 3 Rules
  • [-] You can't control the player
  • [-] Alchemy & Magic
  • [-] Four-colour palette
  • [-] What you create you must destroy
  • [-] One of you is a traitor!

Round 3

Maybe if rules changing wasn't tied to failure...? Maybe if it was just a statement that rules change? Either way, shelter seemed vague enough and you are the final boss seemed fun enough.

  • [-] It's not a bug, it's a feature
  • [-] You can't save them all
  • [+] You are the final boss
  • [-] Death is useful
  • [-] Find it, protect it
  • [-] Shadows
  • [-] Light is dangerous
  • [0] The game rules change after each failure
  • [-] Floating islands
  • [0] the more you use an action the worse it will perform
  • [-] You control the environment, not player
  • [-] Craft your own magic
  • [-] I have been here before
  • [-] You are not the main character
  • [+] Shelter
  • [0] Night is coming

My first ever jam!

Super hyped! This is my first jam and I'm so excited. I hardly have any game dev experience but I'm gonna try and do it anyway - it will be a good learning experience for me.

Tools I'll be using (in varying order of importance):

  • Unity 2017.1.1
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Bosca Ceoil
  • Pure grit
  • Spotify

Please feel free to give me any advice/tips that would be helpful :)

I'm in for the Compo

I have a super poor track record with this thing but I think I will have time this go round!

*Game Engine: HTML5 (not an engine but you get the idea)

*graphics: GIMP/ MS Paint- Maybe Paint.net and inkscape!

*Sound: SFXR/I'll probably make samples at home.

Good luck everyone!

Wallpaper Thread

Lets start a wallpaper thread! I can't get hyped without a kickass wallpaper to get me in the mood!

10 Ways to Prepare

Following LD41, I wrote some lessons learned on preparing before the game jam. I think there's some good stuff in here, especially for anyone new to the sport!

Hey, I made a lil' Atari inspired wallpaper!

Since I made a wallpaper last time, I might as well keep that going. Here it is: LD42WP_By@Dingalong13.png

Also, here's a cleaner version, as suggested by marcel from the LD Discord server. LD42WPemBy@Dingalong13/emv2.png

disposed.

Using sploder.com for the game and a kazoo for the music.

Apologies for not rating last time

I was pretty stressed out and kinda down in the weeks after last LD, so I did not rate a single game. I apologize and promise to not let this happen again. I will make a point to at least rate the games of everyone who comments on mine and (if they participate) the ones who commented on my last game.

I'm in :)

For the second time, I'm in. I'll be using: - C++ - SFML - Gimp - Bosca Ceoil (first time ever making music)

Real World Meetups ? Phoenix area, Arizona

Haven't really heard anyone talking of meetups yet I know the theme has yet to be selected but its good to plan ahead. I know its hot as hell outside here but if anyone wants to do a meetup in the general Phoenix area leave a comment. :)

Time to get prepared

So guys as with my previous LD jam I want again try something which I never focus so much before, so I decided to focus on animations. All my previous games was like dead body. I want finally create something with life included. Some project where I will always be looking forward to get back and continue on this path full of life and moving stuff.

Tools to use: -PS -Unity -BOSCA

Guys enjoy your ride and I hope, everyone of us will learn cool stuff this weekend

About Me

I am a seventh grader who does part-time coding for fun and am looking towards software engineering as a job later on. I want to participate in the Ludum Dare, but want to do some more studying first. Could use some tips with what the most compatible programming language to upload to the website..... And what you would enjoy from any of my games...

Publishing my own little game framework :-)

In my first blog post I stated that I will be using my own little game framework for the upcoming LD. Since I have a lot of free time on my hands, I thought I would create a site with some documentation!

You can check it out here, it is work in progress - so it is not completely finished yet. :-)

I am gonna try to finish the documentation before the start of the LD, in case people want to use it.

Hope this helps some people who want to start creating browser games using JavaScript! Please let me know what you guys think, I learned myself programming so it might not be that perfect :-p

Hurray!

This will be my second time participating. I look forward to seeing what the theme will be and hopefully I can make something fun.

I'm planning on using Unity3d this time around as I am trying to become more familiar with it. Previously, I've used Love2D and Lua.
