LD Themes

Maybe for the next LD we could get rid of the 1 word themes. Do they even count as themes? Some of them sound like 'just make any game'.

Looking for Jammer who can play splitscreen/shared screen games.

Hi guys,

Last time I made a game for 2 players, and it didn't go very well because most people play LD games alone (let's conveniently forget the fact that my last game sux ^^' ).

I still intend to make shared screen game this time, so as insurance I'm asking ahead for people who can play this type of game. Due to this being a pre-jam shoutout, I can only tell that I'll making a split screen or shared screen game for 2 players or more.

===

If you have friend/family who can play together offline, please tell me in the comment, and after the Jam I'll ping you (by prioritize playing your games first) so you'll remember me and play mine ☺️

Looking for an artist

Hello there, this will be my first ludum dare and i am super excited for it. I hope that i can find a designer to up the game graphics.

Good luck everyone!

LD40 was my first LD and I finished 404th in overall score. I was pretty content with the game because I didn't expect anyhting great and was happy that I finished something.

LD41 comes up and during the first day in the COMPO I was so disappointed in my game and felt like I literally wasted my whole weekend. On saturday evening, I posted a gif of my prototype and the feedback was unexpectedly great and blew me away. That motivated me again and I finished 83rd place in overall score. Best score I ever had.

Now ofcourse for LD42, I'm a little bit nervous that unconsciously I want to outperform my previous submission and score better on the overall score. To be realistic, I'm not a very experienced coder/game developer and will probably end up a little bit dissappointed.

Good luck everyone!

We're in!

@almax and I are taking part in this jam and very excited!

Decided to do something animation heavy for a change (assuming we don't change our minds last minute). It will also be our first jam using UE4. I gave myself a crash course in the animation systems last night so I'm not going in blind. A crash course in the VFX systems tonight and then I think we're prepped and ready to go.

Terrible animation, but it works! AnimationTest.gif

It'll be a fun jam hopefully and I'm praying our choice of pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone once again won't kill us.

Good luck to everyone, looking forward to trying out some games from the community in a few days.

Cheers, Greg

My First Time In Ludum Dare

I am so excited to take part of this event, i started learning coding this year on my free time, so i don't expect anything big from myself.

Good luck to everyone taking part of this event. PS: Everyone Wins 🥇🥇🥇

Jam or compo?

Are you going for a jam or compo. If you are going for the jam do you have a team, What is your role?

How to Survive LD 42 Themes

The truth about really good themes, the ones which pass all the sanity checks, is that each theme will inspire only a limited percentage of people. So there is no perfect theme, you will feel inspired or not based on your inner world, thought patterns and memories.

Those who do not feel inspired by a theme will oversize theme's flaws to make it look like the theme does not pass sanity checks. I think a better way would be to try harder at finding inspiration instead.

Step 1 - Be aware that your Theme Voting screen, full of -1s, is still editable

Step 2 - Pick a random theme from the list

Step 3 - Start thinking, but really thinking out of the box, like never before.

Heavily reexamine what you thought was obvious, for example:

Does "1 minute" really needs to mean a one minute time limit imposed on the player?

Does "One Enemy Only" really mean a character which your hero must kill?

Does "Two Points of View" really has to be about two cameras? Does the player even has to see other point of view?

And so on... Attack and reexamine the thoughts which seem most obvious to you.

Step 4 - If you manage to find some inspiration, change the theme's mark from -1 to 1, that way you will help this theme overlap and increase the chance of it getting selected rather than some theme you really don't like. This way you're making more difference than back when you had a big column of -1s.

That is my advice to those who feel the themes are restrictive, as for those who feel they are too broad I can't think of a way to help you. I feel broad themes are good, and how much an author respected the theme will be reflected in his Theme score.

As a final note, I'm far from happy with theme selection as well, but I know all dissatisfaction with the selected theme will disappear when I grab the thread of inspiration and start working on it, LD is always worth it.

Theme opinions

Which themes do you love and hate? Personally, my top one is "decay", I love that theme so much. There's so much you can do with it. I don't even have a good idea for what I'd do with it, I just think as a theme it invites so much variety.

I personally can't stand "You are the final boss", "Two points of view" and "You control the environment, not player" - some of them are too restricting, some of them I can't think of a single game that would be fun for me to make with that as the theme. If any of those were the final theme, I just wouldn't follow the theme at all and not care about the points I get  I'd use it more to prototype one of the (many) ideas I have for future games for my studio to make, the fact that some people would play them and give feedback is a bonus at least xD

it is coming closer!

third time doing a Ludum Dare and hopefully a third time actually "finishing" a game. Hope the theme is good!

Team looking for artist!

We're a team of 4 who have participated in quite a few jams. Our artist has a kid now and she'd like to concentrate on UI/UX, so we're hoping to find another artist. We're open to 2d or 3d.

Here are some of our previous games through the years: * https://bacongamejam.org/jams/bacongamejam-05/81/ * https://bacongamejam.org/jams/bacongamejam-06/137/ * https://bacongamejam.org/jams/bacongamejam-07/236/ * http://ludumdare.com/compo/author/tanner101010/

Animation software?

Hello y'all!

I've been using Krita to practice making sprite animations, but does anyone have recommendations for other free/ opensource software for that?

We (@r3nrohan and me) have been practicing all week, learning to use Unity, brainstorming with the theme list and such. Tomorrow, we're taking a day off from all this game stuff! Need a good, peaceful breather to regroup before the mad dash begins. What are you folks doing tomorrow?

This'll be our first LD jam. 72 hours is gonna be intense, but, we're ready!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's do this thang!

The past several Dares have been a struggle for me - but you just can't resist taking another stab at it! Last couple times I've just had too much going on between friends, family, and life B.S. - this time, however, I've cleared the calendar and am ready to jam!

This time around I'll be using the following tools: - Trello - keeping myself on task is always a challenge during Ludum Dare - Trello helps with that! - Unity - my tried and true engine of choice; shooting for a 2D game this time, but will run 3D if I have to - Photoshop CC - graphics, 'nuff said - FL Studio 20 - tunes and sound effects - SteamLabs OBS - for streaming & recording this bad boy

I'm going to shoot for the compo time frame as I will likely not have any time on Monday granted I have work.

Good luck to all - and remember, the most important things are to keep it simple AND HAVE FUN!

I'm In!

This is my first game jam and hopefully I will be able to make something in only 48 hours.

Tools:

  • Code: Java in Eclipse
  • Art: Paint.NET
  • Sound: Sfxr and/or Audacity

Im in :D
