Not a fan of the theme so I used some of the discarded and old themes, since there were a lot of brouhaha around the voting and theme slaughter.
Here are some of the themes I used in my game DARK LORD LUDUM DARE. Can you find the others?

In this game jam, I made like my fourth ever game. It was extremely fun and I got a really cool idea. In fact, it was so cool I am still developing the game. I already made a bug-fixed version and added powerups. It was really cool
I will later make an android version of the game.
my first game in unity was from a brackeys tutorial on making an infinite runner and the second one was called getting taller the game, for the games factory jam.
and now this is my third game in unity. I think it turned out extremely well. Also, it was my first time using blender for modeling :)
if you want to check out my game here is a link https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/roady-family-firendly-fun-1

I hope you all enjoy this Ludum Dare, we really had a blast making this game :)

This is my sixth LD entry and my first time making a mini-game collection. It was a really fun challenge making a bunch of different games, I only wish there was time to add even more!

Hi everyone, just a few words to conclude this jam
It was the second time my team ( Crazy Collibri) and I join the Ludum dare, the first time was a fail and we cancel the project in the middle. But the time, ten LD events later, we come back with more experience on the tools and we do it ! the theme was a bit hard at the beggining because we don't want to go the same way the others do ! after a few hours brainstorming we found the idea ! And here comes Melting Ice
The first big work on the game was the Penguin AI that was finally a success, the events works nicely and the graphics are pretty cool, about the balancing we do our best to have a game fun and hard ! You spend a lot of time on Menus effects and polish to make the player have a nice experience while playing. The Penguin Animation looks exactly like we wanted to be, he is fun and good looking !
It's true we have a lot of issues with shaders and visual effects! and waste a lot of time on it!
We also have a lot of issues and the end, just when you are supposed to submit your game but anyway we made some choices and disable some effects!
We are a bit disapointed that we don't have time to make our own soundtrack and then we use a royalty free for this version.
To end this post i want to thanks my team that make an amazing job during this 72 hours, all goes fine and smooth! Thanks to Thomas Tournafol and Bastien Fernandez for art and coding with me, balancing and game designing this piece of game. Thanks to Maeva Vigier for the advices, the fonts and some arts in the end of the project!
Don't forget to rate our game and to leave a comment with your high score, unfortunatly we miss some time to include a leaderboard!
Well done all and see you newt time!
GARBAGE GOD alpha is out now: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/garbage-gods
Same here..
I've created a super simple thing, that couldn't even be called a game as it's a "virtual fidget cube". Just check it out, takes less than a minute to "complete", if you don't get stuck that is.

Ice Blocked! A tale of lost love.
This Horde-Style Top Down Brawler is our 2nd LD submission but with a larger team this time around.
The end product is leaps and bounds above what we thought we could achieve, check it out for yourself - https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/ice-blocked
Leave a comment and we will check out your game as well.

How crazy has this deadline been? We are still unpublished, since the servers didn't want to cooperate with any of us tonight, and we've all been sleeping until now, basically just regaining our sanity. It should be up anytime now, though. We just need to actually build the game, and set up for its page with picture and text.
Looking forward to the fun part of playing and rating all the other games I've saved in different tabs on my computer!

Hey there! We, the Gentlemen Teaparty, are glad to inform you all that we were able to create a game for the 42nd Ludumdare. As this was our first complete submission and our second participation at all, we are especially proud!
With the shark, as a metaphor for the cruelty of the upper class, we successfully built in a persistent issue in nowadays society: Class difference. ...Or the pixel artist just had a little bit too much fun while thinking about a concept and randomly put sharks into the game. But that's on you to judge! With the following link, you can try out the game yourselves and see if you come to the same interpretation.
https://gentlementeaparty.itch.io/snobs-like
On a side note, we do realize that there still is work to do for us; that we have to improve in many areas. And with coming LDs we want to slowly reduce our flaws in workflow, game-building issues, and artistic specifics. So we would love to hear some constructive criticism from you guys! :]
But that's enough of us! Have fun playing, make sure to read the rules for playing the game aaand see you in the next gamejam!

Wizard was teleported into crystal maze, deep underwater. He should clean it from all evil and survive long enough. But in the mist of battle, his clumsy spells will destroy walls, flooding rooms one by one.
You are this mage. Good luck!

Left mouse button - fireball. Hold button to grow it bigger! Right mouse button - Ice lance. It could break the glass walls. F - place a block. Shift - teleport.
Wet demons immune to fire.

Hey guys, just submitted a web build to make it easier for people to play. First Ludum Dare, so forgive me for re-post, just ensuring it's accessible and there is a preview image.

My entry: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/move-ld42
An arcade game with endless gameplay, try to get the more score.
The rule is pretty simple, you need to avoid the toxic puddle and kill the all slimes, but slimes can fuse together to give you more trouble, and puddle can fuse as well so you need to be carefull with space, a couple mistakes and you’ll be surrounded by sly slimes.
We as small team really need yours feedback.
https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/wizard-collapse

Good luck, but even developers can’t pass the 300 score barier.

And if you are not running out of... time, I would love to hear your feedback  Always looking for ways of improving my skills, LD after LD! :muscle_tone2:
And congratulations everyone! :fireworks:Hello, bros. We fixed all known bugs, made visuals more intuitive understandable and fixed balance.

We did it! Here's our jam entry for Ludum Dare 42: No Space In My Stomach. Meet Stewart, an extraterrestrial snail.
Stewart is not a lucky guy. Not only he was born as a snail far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy, but once upon a time, he woke up in a mysterious dungeon from which, it would seem, there is no way out. However, he found out that he can clear the way by eating colored pills lying here and there. It's a pity that there is so little space in the stomach...

Uroboros Initiative is a puzzle game about preventing space from collapsing by making big hexagons out of smaller hexagons. Give it a play if you have time, player feedback is super awesome.

This is my second succesful Ludum Dare so I want to try reviewing some things I learned along the way.
Usually I use Unity3d. This time I used typescript + threejs + jquery built in webpack. It took about a week to learn how to get webpack to properly compile sass and typescript but it was worth it. I had no problems with running webpack during the dare, and even getting a few things like fonts to work was hassle free which is unusual for my webpack experience. It also let me develop a UI in HTML which I am very familiar with and can style much better than unity UI. And of course the deploy story was brilliant. Sending people one link where they can play the game is so much better than making them download some zip file.
Presentation FocusMy last Dare game Gunkata taught me that presentation is really important. I was satisfied with it as a game, but being visually bland really made it not appeal to players, so this time around I wanted to focus on aesthetics, and I think that was succesful. Using HTML allowed my to create a cool UI pretty cheaply. I also found a nice font which added a lot of character to the game. Something to try to build on again next time.
Dev StressThis was by far the least stressful Dare I've done. Mostly this is just due to previous Dare experience, but also it's just a move away from a self destructive "at any cost" mentality where I wouldn't sleep or take breaks and break down in day two. I'm sure that I could have squeezed an extra few hours if I worked that much harder, but visualizing the Dare as just a weekend spent programming as the worst case really helped me not stress and enjoy the exercise.
The core concept of the game didn't change too much from the outset. I wanted to make a strategy/puzzle game about preventing or reverting space from collapsing. But in hindsight this was really more of a plot idea than a game idea, so most of the competition was me doing exploratory playtesting to find the game.
This was a great experience as a game designer, which is a big part of why I do the Dare but it also cost me a lot of time. I think a lot of this understanding of what is a solid game idea is and what you should prioritise when playtseting is really hollistic and something you have to learn with practice.
As an example I spent about 3 hours on day 1 designing a sort of fractal tile that would have more depth if the tile had more 'space'. This was all for a mechanic that didn't wind up in the finished version where 'Vacuums' would have to be built to power Spacers by moving space from where they were to the Spacer.
It was something I knew was a mistake at the time but as a programmer it was a cool problem and I really wanted to solve it so I wasted too much time on it, but I'm trying not to kick myself too hard over it.

Big truth: if your players can't understand your game, they can't play it.
I wanted the game to have a zachtronics style creepy office worker feel, but also I'm really bad at writing box text because I'm self conscious of my design. This is bad. It is totally ok to just explain how the game is played in a direct way.
I tried really hard to reduce complexity. In a puzzle game you need it to be complex enough for the player to have something to reason about but you need it to be simple enough to parse. Some parts like the fact that your spacers move to an adjacent tile when a singularity appears on it are probably still a mystery to most players. Hidsight 20/20 I probably still couldn't have done anything about this without writing even more text, or making potentially confusing animations, but it's just something to understand.
I got a question from one player later about what the "wait" button does, and this was just embarassing to me because really, the wait button does nothing. I wrote a wait feature for testing that I added to the game as a "learning tool" to try and make it feel more realtime like the game had been in the beginning. But the reality is that it is a button that you should never ever press because it just makes the game harder. Bad Design.
If I'm going to spend so much time and energy trying to make my game look appealing and engaging I need to also make it parsable. Focus more on this next time. I'm not trying to make cryptoidcore games. Probably.
SoundThe second big takeaway from Gunkata was that sound was really important. This is also another thing that I understand logically but am too afraid of commiting to. Partly this was due to the problems I had in finding the correct design and always prioritising something else. I had to make really crucial balancing changes all the way to the last second so it's hard to just say do music no matter what.
I also have little experience with my music making tools and really need to invest some time into those skills before the next dare so that I can pump out a full track that I can actually put into my game and be happy with. But there are low hanging fruit I should have reached for. Like sound effects for building spacers. Or a low thrum ambient noise that grew louder or quieter with the number of warps. That would have just taken the spooky atmosphere up a notch and I'm really regretting not dedicating a bit of time to it.
Overall I'm happy with where this game wound up which I was not my disposition at the end of day one. And hopefully I get to do it again!
PS: Uroboros. Cool word. Really hard to spell.
Good for you, now you can play as a yandere! Protect your senpai from being taken away from you by all the other girls!
YandereDotDefence is my game for ludum 42. It's a one man operation with all assets made by me in the 3 day jam, come see how it turned out!

It's not technically a 100% finished game (see: placeholder names), but it is playable.

So, actually, my first LD is finished and now I would like to make my game better, add some new content, new features... But it's against the compo rules, so I published the game to itch.io, and I'll make it better there. https://erendelous.itch.io/terraforming-cookie-tower Currently there's the same version as on LD page, but I'm working on kinda "Global Update", including menu, new enemies, bug fixes etc. Thanks everyone for the feedback, I didn't really expect such nice comments and reaction:)
Our debut LD game finally arrives!
ASTROPOCALYPSE is a game where you have to colonize planets before they are destroyed by a giant balck hole, which probably makes it the fastest-paced 4X game out there.
Our team of two had a lot of fun making it! Hope this small game will eventually lead us to something bigger and better. Looking forward to participating again in the future!

I wish there where more web exports that I can test directly in browser.
Most of the games only have Windows exports, and people like me, on linux, need some kind of a VM. And we all know how that sucks right? :)
Unity devs, you have no excuse, add some Web exports please :)
Love you all.
And by the way, if you want to test my game and save Teddy : (Playable on browser ;)

I forgot to post a celebratory post about actually completing something playable.
What Is On The Walls Inside is released! Horray!
This time around I wanted to create something melancholic and relaxing, and I think it kind of worked out. What came of it is a visual novel where you have to explore and judge memories from the past.
If you think you would like it, feel free to give it a try!

Please welcome!

G'day everyone!
After getting a good night's rest, we can finally invite you all to play our 2D bouncer simulator "GoIn - Behave or GET LOST!".
In this game, you manage a night club and need to make sure your customers are happy to rid them of their sweet, sweet dollars! Unfortunately, some people just don't respect others' private space.

In order to keep your paying customers happy, you decide who's staying to party through the night and who's thrown out of the club.

LDJAM 42 was our third game jam, teaching us lots of valuable things along the way. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!: To promote the gradually growing community around our open-source Java 2D game engine LITIengine, we've decided to provide the source code for "GoIn - Behave or GET LOST!" in a public repository on GitHub.
So if you are getting started with LITIengine, consider taking a look at this game's code, even though there may be some really ugly bits of jam code.

We have now gone live! However, there are two major gamebreaking bugs that our programmers will probably spend some time trying to fix so it's actually playable. I am happy with the result, but will dwelve deeper into this in my post mortem that I will get to writing when I've collected all my thoughts!
In the meantime, go check out our game!
https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/spacetime-landlord-tycoon
Hello everyone!
I had a blast during this event, and I think so far this is my biggest game. I even had to cut an entire "game state" due to reaching the limit of tokens on Pico 8 (and not knowing how to work with multicarts :( ).
I over-scoped, but that was fine as I knew when and what to cut out to finishing with a playable game.
If you want to play it please give it time, it's not a "casual" game but more like a classic "WTF do I do" kind of game that requires patience.
I took "Friday the 13th" for NES as inspiration, and I really liked doing that, since it gives you a frame of decisions already made for you. If you aren't sure about something, just check your inspiration game and see how they did it.

As with all my jam games there is always way more I want to have but this is the closest to a complete game i've had! Leave a comment/rating and I will do likewise for your game (with the other games I grab from the game list).
Also let me know if you like the potential cause I'd like to make this a small game and do an "official" release somewheres but want to get some input first :) Many thanks and best of luck to you all!

* Get to Work! * is a puzzle game where you just started your first day in a sorting warehouse, and need to stack the shelves with packages as efficiently as possible.
While you stock shelves, you not only run out of physical space, but virtual space too! Bins have assigned unique item limits that prevents you from stacking too many unique items into the same container, so be careful! You could end up boxing yourself into a corner.

I had an amazing time working on this, and I got to watch a very talented group of RVA Game Devs bring their work to life too! I can't wait to start playing everyone's games!

After a tough weekend I am proud I got through my first ever Ludum Dare!
Good luck everyone...
Hey ! Come check our jam entry !
It's a fast paced top down shooter where killed enemies stay in the map, blocking path and shot.
Hope you'll like it.
The best record is currently own by our composer :

Pirate Space Crafter. is a 3D Puzzle/Sandbox game where you are a Pirate Gunsmith of space.
Craft items by dropping objects into 4 differents machines and get something new as a result ! You can follow the instructions of your Pirate Space Lord that will ask you to craft several weapons ; or simply play in your own with the many possibilities and get some weird things. You have over 40 possibilities. Good luck !

This is my first LudumDare. I've already made a bunch of other GameJam (2 Solo - 6 with a team). So I knew how to avoid some traps !
* LudumDare 42 - Stress, things that went good and wrong *
It was a really cool Gamejam for me. As I worked alone, there was no miss miscomprehension. Nothing went really wrong (except the texture import into unity that look bad). I'm really happy with the end product. Doing a 3D game alone in 72 hours is Hard ! And I managed to do some Story with a (terrible) Voice acting, I had the time to add Subtitles (without it no one would understand what i'm saying with that accent). And the Game Lifetime is close to 15-30 minutes which is cool for a Gamejam game !
So yea! Good experience for me :)
* GameDesign *
As the theme was "Running out of Space". I tried to remember some Gamer experiences I had where I was like "I need more space !". My first thought was SimCity 5 (lol), and Factorio. In factorio. Belt, machinery and everything take some place. Even if the map is infinit, you always need to connect that part of the factory to that other part. And you finish by having everything everywhere. Sometimes you also have entire part of your factory not working. But you don't figure it out quickly because everything is a mess.
So I wanted the same thing for my game; A bunch of items in a small place where you finish by having everything at your feet, not knowing what you did of your uranium bar. As always my Game Jam gameplay idea come very quick. In 10 minutes I already knew where I wanted to go.
* Programming *
I already made a bunch of prototype and one GameJam with Unity. I know how to script things (Even if i'm not so good at gameplay programming for the moment; Working on it !).
I used ScriptableObjects for pickable items data (storing it's name, and the objects it produce if it goes in the furnace, the compressor or the Electrolizer). And also putting a reference of the Prefab of the object itself in this ScriptableObject. And for the object of that item, I put a reference of that ScriptableObject data file in a script called (Object_Manager). Yea I know, It's a little messy. Here is a screenshot :v:

For the machinery, it only launch a bunch of instructions in a Coroutine with somes 'Wait' in it. It only get the Gameobject that are inside the "Transforming zone". Get the Item_Data that contain the Gameobject (yes the Scriptableobject) and will retrieve what item it should result from the transformation. And then spawning the Object ! Simple.
* 3D Modeling *
I used Blender. I started by modeling the LowPoly version of the object. Then I duplicated the Lowpoly and applied a Subsurface modifier to add polygon at the edges. Then I simply exported both Lowpoly and Highpoly and baked them in Substance Painter. Simple as that. I did 4 machines, and more than 40 meshes. I needed to go fast, that's why some assets are quite bad looking sometimes. Didn't had the time haha !
* TEXTURING *
As a student in a video game school. I have access for free to a bunch of softwares. Like Substance Painter who helped me a lot with texturing my 3D meshs very very quickly. I used the Stylized Smart material of 3dEX (paid). Smart material are a real thing of Substance painter who allow artist to quickly get realistic PBR material. As I wanted a more stylized render for my game. The material of 3dEX do automatically a great render by pre-coloring curvature, thickness, ambient occlusion... Substance Painter also bake Low-Poly from High poly to put this overage of information into Normal and height map. After that you just need to push some buttons and pull some lever to get the most tasty result.
BUT - I Said BUT. I never used Substance Painter for Unity. I only did with Unreal Engine. the shader graph of unreal is more beginner-friendly that the new buggy Shader graph of unity. So as every Gamejam ; The nightmare begun.
As you probably noticed in the game, you have weird black area on machines and sometimes on items (Like the Iron and Uranium bar). This is because of black magic. I don't know what messed up in my process. And I don't want to get my hands back in it. Maybe something do to with the compatibility of how the shader on unity are coded compared as the one in the Substance Painter software. But everything was different from Sub'Painter compared to the render I had in game. (And nothing do to with light, the black area on my sprites eat light).
Here is what I get on Sub'Painter.

We did it! And now it's live and ready to play!!

Avoid the Gobbs as you desperately attempt to refuel your coin-operated time machine!
Arrow keys recommended.
Gamepad will override.
'Z' and 'X' do slash and hack.

Finished! This was my first game jam in 3 years and my first time using Unity (when not just following a tutorial) so I'm pleased with how it came out! You can try Block Caver here.
(Html5 version available)

Top down, multiplayer, couch game you can enjoy with 2-4 friends. Load up delivery trucks with packages with the help of your friends before the trucks leave. Work fast for the packages could clutter up the warehouse, look out for a flamethrower to clear up some space.
Super challenging solo keyboard mode too!

Even though the both of us have joined at least 9 successful Ludum Dare jams and with the previous 3 games completed every planned feature. This time we massively overscoped the game by a large margin.
Mistakes were made along the way, but we learnt so much from being so massively overscoped in this Ludum Dare.
Even though we didn't managed to finish all of our planned features, we did learnt a lot during this LD.
We are still hopeful that we can get our development speed up to par to what we did to our Technocide game made on GameMaker:Studio 2. In our early days of using GameMaker, we also did massively overscope and failed to deliver a quality game experience. Fast forward few years later, we're making a game with a slightly bigger scope but better, stable and a much more complete experience. For now, we'll just make games with a smaller scope while trying to learn more about Unity. Probably make a 2D game for upcoming LD jams?

New and improvement movement near trees! YAY!
Also added an indicator to clarify on the Meat delivery mechanic. Meat must be inside the box, UI meat icon only indicates delivered meat.

Hello everyone, when i'm making prototype i often need asset but don't bother making them. So i cleanup the icons i made for my game, added some i didn't end up using and make a zip that i can easily use for later project. And i really liked working on this prototype and wanted to share it with you :) hope this can be useful to you too ! feel free to use them as you want.

Cluster is a very old hard drive (its maximum storage capacity is 10 GB), but very insightful. Tired of the constant abuses of its owner, by the large number of files that download, a rebellion begins in which you can help him to comply with it, delete each and every one of the downloaded files, before these are hidden in the folders.

Imagine, that you are in a room full of junk. Imagine that the walls are coming towards you, from left and right to crush you. Imagine that you find a gun and that you have to shoot cute little rats in order to get out. You don't have to imagine. You just have to play our game:

It's like racing but with a lisp... or maybe the track just gets thinner? Why don't you just come on down to https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/rachrink and find out.

A bored boy on a boring math lesson started drawing something that became alive! And now it wants to escape from his birthplace! Help our blue friend reaching the freedom through the obstacles put by the creator, you count with a huge sort of different movements.

My girlfriend and I made a low-poly survival space game. You will have to farm 4 different types of plants to survive !
We tried to do a Compo but as a team

I would really enjoy a feedback on the game ! Do not hesitate to ask question because I would like to improve the game in the next few days. If anything the comment section is here.

Come check out my third entry for Ludum Dare. Let me know how long you can keep the house clean. :D
Hi guys!
I write this little blog post to talk about the game I made during this Jam: No Vacancy

The concept is simple: Heaven is running out of space
You play as God and your job is to make good humans sinful based on their weakness. A new human (good or bad) appear on screen every 4 seconds. good humans are dressed in blue, and bad ones in red. When you click on a human, you can see its first name, last name, age, weakness, good/bad balance and lifespan (green bar).
Your goal is to transform a good human into a bad human by clicking on sin corresponding to their weakness.
if a good human dies, it goes to Heaven and there are less places left. When the remaining places are 0, the game end. Your final score is the time spent before Heaven in completely full.
Enough talking, here are few screenshots!
(Oh, and if you write "thanos" with your keyboard in game, you can make the population perfectly balanced 👌)

So, this was my 3rd Ludum Dare, and my first Game Jam alone, I really like what I managed to do, even if the gameplay is very simple and even it's a little buggy sometimes.
Software used: - Engine: Unity - Programming: Visual Studio - Graphics: Adobe Photoshop CC - Music/Sounds: Ableton Live 10
Known bug: Sometimes sin buttons doesn't work anymore. Fix soon.
Here's a link to the game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/no-vacancy-1
(macOS and Win version, Linux version coming soon!)
Have fun! Any feedback is appreciated
