The TV Install Man - Post Mortem

Well, I guess here's my obligatory post-mortem! Here we go (also take two, I accidentally refreshed the page without saving the first one...)

The Pros: * I think execution wise, it went pretty solid. The game's features were all implemented the way I wanted 'em, and in my play testing I didn't run into anything major. So mission successful? * I tried out Bosca Coeil (or however you spell that app) for the first time, and I think came up with some decent sound effects. It's definitely a solid app. * The UI elements came out much better this time around than they have in the past, even though that might not be saying anything. I still only set it up to support 1280 x 720 resolutions (or similar aspect ratios), but I guess supporting multiple resolutions is a little awkward for such a short dev time.

The Cons: * I felt like the gameplay didn't really sell it on the fun factor. I guess we'll find out in the voting, but I suspect that will be the case. I think it is mainly the game I decided to make, over the theme... it just wasn't all that great of a theme for a game. Ah well. I had a MUCH better idea in the shower though on Monday... (a SHMUP game where the screen slowly shrinks while you try and avoid bullets and such, basically. Much better idea) * Graphics were still kinda sucky, even though they are a slight improvement over my last submission. * Apparently you have to change the visibility on the itch.io page for people to see it. Who knew? That should be fixed now though.

Anyways, if you wanna play it, you can find it at this link: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/the-tv-install-man

P.S. It has a web version :D

Cheers, and good luck to everyone! I hopefully will hang around for the next one too :)

There is nothing wrong with your television set

The Wren Pirates are big fans of interactive fiction, so this week I learned a lot about Twine (and maybe some JavaScript by default). In real life, WrenCorsair can draw; I use Photoshop/Illustrator for a lot of my professional work; and we threw all of that away to bring you a text game. Hopefully, the splash graphic reminds you of simpler times when bits were 8 and text was all you got. We promise that your actions in the first half determine your fate in the latter. It’s safe for work or while waiting for public transit, btw. (Looks just as good on mobile!) We have a little woulda-coulda and maybe some shoulda, but we hope you enjoy meeting Trish and her friends.*

Hello Everyone Please have a look at my first LD game... I am sure you will enjoy playing it. Give it a try. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/bomber-brigade

Hey there.

This is the first time I ever did a Game Jam and the first time i made a (I think) half decent game, together with my friend Yoran I think we made something nice :) https://santaclausnl.000webhostapp.com/zyro/LudumDare/Space%20Evader(42)/index.html Banner.png. I will play all HTML5 games(on a shitty laptop atm) so hit me up in the comments. Thanks a lot for rating  and hope you all had fun these last few days.

Build Build Build!

this is my first time doing ludum dare, i hope you like it!

Second Ludum Dare Was Blast!

Its easy to forget how exhausting the ludum dare is, lol. This time around, I made some pretty bad mistakes regarding game design and bugs. Next time around, Ill have to watch for that. Minor details that effect the game so drastically can be easy to miss tho.

Personal tips for publishing your game

All Entries

Hosting your game

  • Web versions of your games will get the most plays as it is easier to access it
  • itch.io is a good place to host your web game, but it can also host the download files for you and looks much nicer than some of the alternatives.

Common places to upload are: - itch.io - dropbox.com - drive.google.com - github.com

File formats

  • Try to avoid storing your files in non-native formats (no RAR files!)
  • A ZIP or TAR file are much easier to distribute to a wider audience

Post submission updates

  • Don't be afraid to fix bugs that break your game. For example, my own entry had a bug where the dice was roll-able when it shouldn't be so I patched that out.
  • Do keep in mind that new features are breaking the rules, however small of a feature.
  • That doesn't mean people don't want to see updates, add a post LD version for people to enjoy!

Compo Entries:

  • Don't forget your source code needs to be uploaded too!

Jam Entries:

  • Make sure to give credit to resources and contributors, it's only fair!

Finally able to publish XORN :p

Cover.png

After less than 3 days, we are glad to present our LDJam 42 entry: "XORN: The Fallen God".

XORN is a 3D isometric fighting game in which you have to kill ennemies before they kills you.

The only constraint ? The map is falling into pieces because of a huge storm. Collect coins to repair the floor before you runs out of space.

You can checkout and rate the game here https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/xorn-the-fallen-god Please leave us feedback, we plan to continue this game in the future ;)

Update for Shoot O' Space

Hi peeps! So recently, I got some feedback from you, which mostly said something like this: "The enemies are moving too fast!" So guess what? I actually made the game more fair for the player. Thanks for your feedback, I hope I will get more soon.

Highlights from games so far, ranting about (possible) problems with webGL build

Recently when I saw jtn191 playing my game on twitch, I noticed that on his setup my game played very differently than it does on my machine - player character moving very slowly, causing the game to be much more difficult than it's supposed to be. I suspect it's something to do with the webGL build. Has anyone had a similar experience with WebGL? Is that why so many games only give a downloadable binary version and not a web version?

Anyway, here are the top 3 of the 13 games I rated so far:

Viral (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/viral): really neat concept (having to delete files on your computer to stop a virus) and great implementation, and the interface felt great.

Park and Match (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/park-match): a very stressing valet simulator :) I had fun with it and thought it conveyed the theme really well.

Flood (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/flood): one of the more polished games I've played. Especially liked the bow shooting mechanic.

Gonna rate more games now. Would appreciate it if people want to try my game out as well! (please try the binary version if webGL version seems too difficult, and tell me if you see a big difference):

"Pick up space toys!", the Making Of.

My game, Pick up space toys, is a sort of "I spy" where you have to make room by picking up the space toys (we're running out of space, see?).

It looks like this:

gameplay.gif

People are curious how I made it. The key ingredient is a 360 photo camera and a tripod. I took multiple photos from the same location (being careful not to bump into anything or move the tripod):

  • one photo with the space toys in place
  • another with the space toys removed
  • a few more photos with different poses for the toys that animate on click (spoiler alert)

Then I used an image editor (Gimp in my case) to mark out where the space toys are. I cut the "no toys" photo at these exact spots: the program uses these pictures to mask out the toys when they're clicked.

The effect looks really good when the two pictures match exactly. Unfortunately for one scene the sun was moving and illumination changed. I didn't have time to retake the pictures so we have to live with it for the jam.

To display the 360 photos I use the A-Frame webvr framework. It's good for that and as a bonus, when using a VR headset it can show the 360 photo around you in VR. I was only able to test with the Oculus Go but the effect's pretty cool.

I made the sound effects with bfxr, and the music with Bosca Ceoil. It was my first time using them.

I put the game on Glitch, a gem of a web site where we can share code, work collaboratively, and edit our programs directly on the web.

Please play my game! I hope you have as much fun playing it as I had making it!

I Was Not Able To Finish For Ludum Dare 42

This Ludum Dare i was not able to finish or even start my game properly. The reason for this is that i had no free time to work on it. This weekend i was traveling around and have not had access to my computer for long enough hours to be able to get started on the ideas i had. Next time i will certainly plan for some time to work on it. I hope you all had fun this Ludum Dare.

Game done. Afterthoughts?

ld42_splash.png Triple Tribble Trouble done!

Tried publishing last night for an hour during the last hour. Website was so slow, but there was a grace period of 2 minutes I managed to publish. Well, good thing an extended publish day was added, for all who didn't manage to publish.

Otherwise, we had a really fun jam this weekend. I think we managed to create a pretty polished game. The only thing I would add, is more levels, traps, triggers etc.

Also, we were a bit nooby with git, and once again had to learn the correct work-flow. ALWAYS commit locally, then pull, then push. Or there will be trouble... oh the trouble we had. You could say we had triple trouble

Personal Space

My first solo jam ended up being a bit more than I could chew. It was inspired by Douglas Adams's Starship Titanic, where you have to speak to the people to progress in the game, but it doesn't always turn out as expected. It was a good learning experience nevertheless. Screenshot at Aug 13 10-32-23.png Screenshot at Aug 14 08-38-41.png

Sweatin' Spinnin' Spacin'

Yes!! WE MADE IT! This time we took the Running out of Space LITERALLY.

You can even play this on mobile :D Simplest of our games made so far but one where we both (@blu3bird and i) tried new software and engines. Namely Affinity Designer + Spine and Defold engine.

I'll leave the new engine experience to @blu3bird to share.

We've actually taken the inspiration of the character from a popular TV personality. In fact, even the name of the game was inspired.

We unfortunately forgot to include the sweat in the game :P

Here it is: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/sweatin-spinnin-spacin

Please Help Rate and Play my Game!

This is my LD42 game Taint, submitted for Jam, created by PYJA and KATB. The theme of the competition was running out of space, and we fulfilled this by having a spreading corruption chasing you away, and enemies constantly producing high damage dealing corruption. This can be swiped away with your broom. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/taint-a-ld42-game-by-pyja-and-katb-1

Looking for more games to play!

I had a bit of time before work today, so I was able to catch up and play some more games. I'll be looking to rate more when I get back home this evening though, so if you'd like me to take a look at your game and leave you some feedback, just drop a link in the comments and I'll put it on my list.

Restacker - Alpha

Hi, we're happy to announce that few hours ago we finished and published "playable" version of our new physic-based logic game - Restacker.

Yee.png

Download it here: https://puebebe.itch.io/restacker

We barely fit in time and we still have many thing to improve, like adding freeze blocks mechanic and improving distribution on the screen (maybe an additional gamemode could be developed), but it's finally done and aviable for download (unfortunately for now only for windows, sdk problems and stuff).

As following, we warmly invite you to play Restacker and enjoying our game (in my opinion destroying stuff and throwing 'clamped' shapes is very satysfing) If you can, give us a feedback what should be changed or improved, and what was the most enjoyable in our game.

Greedy Guts

2.png

This has been my 3rd Jam I've participated. I teamed up with 2 first-timers who did an amazing job with their part of the game.

You've been swallowed by greedy guts. Now you have to escape using your own means of transport, a spaceship, but beware; he never stops eating. Fly your way out, avoiding falling junk food and collect blue crystals along the way for the highest score! Don't go too slow though or you will be swallowed by some greenish acid.

Don't Miss! is live, you can try it now

Hey everyone, It's been a really long time since I was able to enter LDJam, I liked the theme and had what I thought was an interesting idea. You have to shoot enemies in a top down arena with your spaceship, but each time you miss you create another block of wall, so if you keep missing you'll decrease your playable area. Or if you're really good and you get every shot you "only" have to survive the incoming enemies.

There's a web version, hope you try it and have fun, I sure had fun making it.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/dont-miss-1

18248.gif

Welp, failed to deliver, but hey!

I worked on something, and if I hadn't, I may never have given it a shot again. So that's the silver lining!

The dark cloud, however, is that my game can't build (there are Unity system errors beyond my control that cause the build to fail every time), and several functions I programmed with tutorial scripts from as recent as 3 months ago for reference do not serve their purposes.

The game is about a shadow trying to bring back his friends, in a world that's had all shadows removed due to a curse. The curse also says that nobody will notice that they've lost their shadow, but all shadows will be gone forever (and the sun will burn everything) if someone notices a shadow alone in the open. The main character has to collect shade underneath NPCs and (eventually) props like buildings, revive the shadow that belongs to that NPC (or prop) and move to the next one quickly enough to build up a "shade multiplier" (basically points to buy upgrades and abilities later).

[HOW IT TIED INTO THE THEME, IF I COULD HAVE MADE IT] Essentially during one playthrough you wouldn't have the chance to go back and level select, so you get one chance to get as many points as possible per level (the first being a 4-way stop light intersection, possibly next a city block, even a whole city if I'm ambitious enough) and upgrade your traits, and end the game with both a brag-worthy score and an OP player character. If you didn't play fast enough, or didn't strategize which objects to chase after well enough, then you'd RUN OUT OF SPACE in the level from which to get shade. I know, confusing, but you'll just have to take my word for it.

What I couldn't do was get NPCs to obey the NavMesh; they wanted to walk across the street from their spawn point, when the only way to get to their destinations was to reach the intersection and cross from THERE. Next I couldn't get their animations to work fully (their walk cycle was missing a bunch of frames; it played smoothly, but was posed awkwardly) AND couldn't get the animations to STOP when they met the conditions under which I TOLD them to stop.

Oh well! I'll passively work on it again soon. I've got music deadlines to reach before I can work on game dev again.

Mac Builds or HTML Builds PLEASE!!!

Being a mac user, I want to get rid of this situation. I saw many entries made by Unity, so please, do get a mac build (or a html build). For many wonderful games I saw (from the screen shots and comments), it is really a pity and no reason not to do so (unless some shaders or api are platform specific). I'm really begging on my knees>>> I will appreciate all those efforts! PLEASE!!!

PS: Be careful with HTML build, quite a number of products I played having problems with HTML build, especially on Mac not windows (even though we play it via WebBrowser!).

Link fixed and games wanted

Somehow I forgot to set my itch page as public so I just went to fix that. Game is available right now so please give it a try if you find the time. As soon as I actually eat something decent today I'll be playing games so please tell me about yours if you want me to give it a try :)

"Running" out of "space"

LD42em2018-08-14/em10-49-30.png

You start on Earth and eventually end up beyond the observable universe.

All numbers, sizes, speeds are very accurate so be aware that this is CPU heavy, there are 21-digit number calculations going on in 60FPS.

The Story

Two friends were sitting on a couch and shittalking. Lets call them Joe and Steve.

Steve: "Eyyy.... I really want to run..."

Joe: "*What?.. *"

Steve: "Run. Like walking really fast?.."

Joe: "Uhm.. yeah so why don't you do that?"

Steve: "..."

Joe: "Just run. Run as fast as you can, takeoff, launch yourself into fkin' orbit.. keep running and run out of space"

Steve: "This is dumb"

Joe: "Mayonnaise"

Like 3D isometric games ?

Hi !

You like 3D isometric games ? I think you will like XORN ! XORN is a 3D isometric fighter / action game. You have to kill ennemies before they kill you but be careful, the map is falling into pieces ;)

Tribe Terror

Tribe Terror is a Strategy game, that plays like a 2D-Sidescroller. You have to get recources, make weapons and tools, extend your tribe and defeat the enemy! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/tribe-terror Test.gif

When the Space is running out of space! Playable in browser.

My first game for Ludum Dare. Took a lot of time and work since I am new to Unity. The Space is running out of space since every country started launching way too many satellites, and now there are many unusable satellites in the space in the form of space garbage. Your job is to shoot and destroy the red satellites while leaving the green satellites untouched. If you miss a red satellite, it will reduce the space left in Space! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/space-cleanup-when-the-space-was-running-out-of-space screenshot1.JPG screenshot3.JPG

Leaving the comfort zone and change game creation platform

17c58.png

First time I tested Unity was back in 2013:ish and I didn't really like it and I stayed with Java and LibGDX.

Earlier this summer, after Apple announced that they are deprecating OpenGL, I decided to install Unity again and test if it has improved over the last 5 years.

To cut the story short I ended up using Unity for LD42. It was a fun ride and apart from the random crashes and a few WTFs I enjoyed it.

I need to learn how to draw sprites as fonts. I ended up doing a very silly pixel copy from my sprite sheet to an UI Image to get out sprites font to show up. It's very limited but was the quickest way I could find now.

Compiling for other platforms was easier in Unity compared to LibGDX since I didn't have to worry about shipping a copy of java with the game.

The end result

We both was uninspired by the theme and just started to work on some vague idea of gas clouds covering an island. After a bit of tweaking I'm pretty happy with the result. I feel like it's missing a few bits and bobs but unspired + shifting platform + limited time = happy that we got another game done.

Random generation of islands

I have experince of PerlinNoise since earlier and decided to generate the islands randomly on each run. Luckily Unity includes a 2D-version of Perlin. Then some magic happend and my brain just wrote code and I did stand beside and watched.. somehow I managed to create islands of all different sizes which we then limited since the idea is to have a quite small island covered with gas clouds.

So if I have to pick one fun moment of this jam it was that one hour in the zone where things just happend magically.

The only thing I want to add are smoother borders between the layers but I wasn't really up for that challenge.. maybe the next time or in a possible post-jam version :)

Where is the WebGL version?

It's available but in the end it become a bit too laggy and we decided to not include it. I guess I went a bit too crazy with the particles thing :) Also I noticed it doesn't work in safari (no lights) so decided to keep only the downloadable versions.

THERE IS NO SPACE TO PANIC

Pretty Happy for finishing our first LD The game needs more development, but hey.. that's ok! It's playable :v:

Be the captain of this strange spaceship and investigate your crew to find the alien that is eating the rooms. Match the crew profile with the alien and kill this monster(becareful, dont kill inocent people).

Limited Space Racer Early

I have added my game a bit earlier. I would like some feedback as this is my first game with godot. Like does it fit the theme well? is it fun?

I plan to make some quality of life improvements, aswell as amking a web version, as it stands it's only available for windows right now.

Check it out here

Spaceness is made of Awesomeness!

Check out our little game Spaceness. It's so simple, you only have to avoid space rubbish and get the highest score. It can be easy at the beginning but do not get distracted because the more score, the more space junk. I have managed to reach 2501 points, and you?

Thanks for the great feedback so far!

as the title says, thanks to everyone who played my game, ive made a small list of feedback points which i will (hopefully) integrate into my next LD game :)

Heres the list so far:

-x86 support (duh.) -smooth color transitions instead of instantly swappable palettes -Better control support, maybe even for actual controllers (people seem to be confused about my controls, understandably, i use the mouse, space and WASD or the arrow keys, quite odd) -more weapons to allow for more depth

feel free to check out my game, LaserJuice and add your own feedback :) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/laserjuice-top-down-shooter

Can you beat the table??

Here you have to thwart the smallness of the table, can you do that??? if you loose you will be fired by your angry boss!

Stay tuned!

I've recieved many comments that my game is not able to be played. Thank you all for this very important feedback. I'll be home late today, but I will look at the problem then. Please try to play it again, when fixed. Have a good time you all!!

Running out of space... for real.

Having a great time playing and reviewing all these wonderful games! However, anyone else find it super ironic that their SSD is literally running out of space from all these amazing games?

Post Mortems!

Has anyone written up a post mortem for their game? Post it here, I'd love to have a read  mine is here

We did it!

Our game is ready to release. You can download it and source files here: https://github.com/YarikBur/sgs02/releases/tag/addExe We have .jar and .exe files there. Wait for release on LD and enjoy!2up3fnIcuX0.jpg

GG All :P

At the beggining I didn't liked this theme, I was afraid of having a lot of Fortnite like but there is none of that. Contrary, there is a lot of insane games. GG All for entries.

Finished!

Yesterday we finished our first Ludum dare game, but took forever to upload it. For now we only have the .apk version. This week we will upload an html5 port. You can check it here! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/dodgeball
