Bring on the theme voting

My technique for the theme slaughter is firm but fair. I like to think I give every theme a fair chance.

Now bring on the voting :8ball:

Been there, done that

I had to say no to this theme as it's already what I made for LD43. Screenshot_20190416-181731.png https://lilou-cormic.itch.io/cant-save-them-all Cover.png

So how old are you?

So, I'm participating in this competition for first time, and I would like to make some kind of a survey. So my question is: How old are you? Vote on Google Forms AGE: https://forms.gle/8j5Hby3sZeFTMS2F8 ••• GAME ENGINE: https://forms.gle/dzXnhPM2TMvfpBuj6 •••

Engine Development - Day 15

Hi! Not much has been done today, but I felt really tired throughout the day so that's probably why. I started working on the component editor. Currently, all it does is finding all component types in the project and listing them.

day15-components.gif

I also added a 'remove object' button below the object list as I realize that's a feature I probably want to have.

That's it for now. Bye!

Polished my LD43 game and now I field ready for LD 44

I have made some improvement to my LD 43 game. If you are interested in trying the game, you can find it here https://gamejolt.com/games/ExplodingSport/382700 .

I will also be part of LD44, at least I hope so.

Tiimus: find your teammates

Hi everyone, hope you are doing great!

We at Bendev always struggled to find missing roles for our game projects (mostly for Ludum Dares) like an artist or a musician. Since we are a group of 3 developers, every time we try our best to fulfill these roles by ourselves to deliver some of our ideas, there is a huge limitation in aspects we would like to be better.

Some time ago, we thought how cool would be if we had some place where we could find people interested in making games with those skills, or maybe just someone willing to try to fill one of those roles. With that in mind, we ended up idealizing Tiimus, a place where people with different skills could connect and make awesome games together.

After a lot of work, we are more than happy to deliver to you the first (very alpha) version of Tiimus.

Tiimus is a platform where you can look for projects that are in need of some skills or create a project yourself, selecting skills you are looking for. You can ask to join a project, or invite a user to your project. We let the user know that you are interested in working with him and he can accept your invite so you can start working together.

Tiimus is in its first version, so at the moment it has the minimum experience to connect people. We have plenty more features and improvements to deliver very soon and we hope that with your feedback we can make it even better.

Tiimus is 100% free and open source. You can find its code here and here we would be more than happy to accept your help.

Crunch time engine development: Commit count 126

Hi :v:

For every LD I've told myself I would make my games in my own engines (and I kind of came close to that with LD39 and LibGDX), but I haven't been truly able to do that

For the past 2 weeks I've been crunching hard on my 6-months-in-off-and-on-dev engine, cleaning it up and finishing all the necessary features for basic games:

(ravine is a little game I'm making just to see what the shortcomings of my engine are) ldpost0.gif

Here it is, its called Kea and here is its repository. It has a very simplified API, which many will see as a downside, but this is meant for me to build small scale, unambitious projects like game jams and such. I don't need complex frame graph renderers or GPU particles, just a sprite renderer

Where I am now

Currently I have 6 platforms supported:

  • Desktop: Windows, MacOS and Linux
  • Mobile: Android, iOS
  • Console: Nintendo Switch (homebrew though, I don't have a real Nintendo License :pensive:)

With a developer backend for OpenGL and in-dev backends for Vulkan, DX12 and Metal through gfx-hal.

In addition to a rendering abstraction I have a fairly solid interface for cross-platform input, and an asset packaging and loading system. (Sidenote: File containers are fun to write)

Past few weeks I've made way more strides in the engine development than the previous 3 months combined. There is still a lot to do though.

What needs to be done

My main concern right now is audio. I have completely neglected sfx API development, and its crucial for a decent jam game. I've been toying with an API that might not be absolutely terrible, but also does not currently have any support on any of the platforms I have.

The next 2-3 days I will focus 100% (read: 70%) on getting the audio API off the ground and into a workable state. And when that's done... There's always more to do

Oh, and I'm in! :tada:

Good luck to all!

I'm In! Lets Do This :)

This is my first LD Game Jam! This is going to be hard because of school and because it's literally the week before our huge test.

Engine/Framework: LOVE2D (Lua Framework), OR Unity Text Editor: Atom Art: GIMP, Tiled Music: Bosca Ceoil(IDK how to spell), Audacity

I'm super pumped! Also want to know if anyone wants to team up for this project?

i'm as in as ever

themeSlaughterResults.JPG Finished the theme slaughter with about as few themes voted up as usual. I stand by my existing voting criteria. Unfortunately I didn't finish the last LD because my computer died in the middle of the jam! Back up and running now though, and ready to jam out some code+resources (and watch some hockey).

Will hopefully get through the jam this time. Planning to use the following tools: - Unity - Blender - Paint Dot Net - Audacity

This time around I'll try to be a little more active on the blog site both before, during and after the jam. Good luck to all involved!

Virtual billboard progress update 2

I didn't have time yesterday to post this, because a wild couch came into my house just to be stuck in a door frame. We had to cut it (I mean the door frame, not the couch).

I finally started using this app. It's weird, because I'm using it to make it better. Annotation 2019-04-18 112520.jpg

I'm stuck with the 5th version, because the 6th version (the newest) can't read old files. I'm thinking of implementing a version variable to the save files, so the app would warn user about that change and suggest importing the file to a new version.

Another problem that I have is that unity is acting weird. When I open the app it shows me this: Annotation 2019-04-18 112735.jpg Please help me with this. I had problems with just delete them, because every antivirus was freaking out and now I have this.

Also now every note has an outline. Annotation 2019-04-18 113027.jpg

If you noticed I added the big note. It only comes in one color, but don't worry. That's just a feature. Big notes have an independent edit menu. Here's the edit window for small notes. Annotation 2019-04-18 113200.jpg Here's the edit window for big notes. Annotation 2019-04-18 113220.jpg

I have to make a return function that would take the user to the projects menu. It's really annoying to close the app, find it in file explorer and then launch it again. The version control and those small notes will be next.

See you... someday.

Survey Results

About a week ago I ran a survey asking preferred programming language and level of experience. A lot of you have asked for the results so here they are! Keep in mind this survey was also shared with several other programming communities.

unknown.png

It looks like a majority of people use C#, with Java and Python coming in at second.

Copy of Stats Preferred PL (Responses).xlsx - Excel.jpg

As for the level of experience it's definitely skewed!

Contrary to the hypothesis, there didn't seem to be any correlation between level of experience and preferred language

And for the statisticians and number people among you, here's the santitized data from the survey (all 180+ responses):
