LD 44 April 26–29, 2019

This helped me to create the story of my game, maybe will help you too.

Early currency

"Originally money was a form of receipt, representing grain stored in temple granaries in Sumer in ancient Mesopotamia and later in Ancient Egypt.

In this first stage of currency, metals were used as symbols to represent value stored in the form of commodities. This formed the basis of trade in the Fertile Crescent for over 1500 years. However, the collapse of the Near Eastern trading system pointed to a flaw: in an era where there was no place that was safe to store value, the value of a circulating medium could only be as sound as the forces that defended that store. A trade could only reach as far as the credibility of that military. By the late Bronze Age, however, a series of treaties had established safe passage for merchants around the Eastern Mediterranean, spreading from Minoan Crete and Mycenae in the northwest to Elam and Bahrain in the southeast. It is not known what was used as a currency for these exchanges, but it is thought that ox-hide shaped ingots of copper, produced in Cyprus, may have functioned as a currency.

It is thought that the increase in piracy and raiding associated with the Bronze Age collapse, possibly produced by the Peoples of the Sea, brought the trading system of oxhide ingots to an end. It was only the recovery of Phoenician trade in the 10th and 9th centuries BC that led to a return to prosperity, and the appearance of real coinage, possibly first in Anatolia with Croesus of Lydia and subsequently with the Greeks and Persians. In Africa, many forms of value store have been used, including beads, ingots, ivory, various forms of weapons, livestock, the manilla currency, and ochre and other earth oxides. The manilla rings of West Africa were one of the currencies used from the 15th century onwards to sell slaves. African currency is still notable for its variety, and in many places, various forms of barter still apply."

I'm frustrated today.

This is perhaps the most disappointed I've been with Ludum Dare in years. I wasn't even going to have time to do this jam, and I was considering attempting a micro submission taking only a couple of hours just to do something, especially now that it's only twice a year.

But with this theme being one of the most frustrating in recent memory, and not a single theme having more upvotes than downvotes -- in my opinion something has to change. Maybe I'm in the minority, and if I stop doing LD it doesn't matter because more people will start and take my place, but there are so many awful themes and negative votes, and in my opinion no positive theme vote percentages is a serious thing.

I would LOVE if once per year, or even once every two years, some random person in authority outright chose a theme. I would far prefer that to the voting mess as is, where many or most people end up unhappy, and there's this weird mix of repeat themes or awkward themes.

Finally, someone might argue that one can be creative and make many games and do whatever with a theme, or ignore the theme, and obviously that's true. But, one of my biggest frustrations with occasional Ludum Dare themes is that most people seemingly do not consider how frustrating it will be to playtest 40+ games with a given theme. To get a decent chance at a rating, you're supposed to at minimum playtest 30-40 games taking a substantial amount of time on each game and giving a reasonably detailed review.

Now imagine (as I experienced) having to playtest like 30 games that are all operated with awkward 2-button controls. Or imagine playtesting 30+ games where you only have downgrades, not upgrades. Or imagine how awful games are where you have to pay your life as currency, and now imagine 30+ different games where you get to experience that frustration repeatedly.

It leads to unhappiness and negative ratings and sadness.

Getting some Ideas

I have really been thinking,the theme is hard,but here is what I came up with:

●A game in which you play a mobile game in which you can spend the hours of your life as currency

● racing game in which there is a heat bar for your vehicle,Yiou can use nitro boosts and other boosters from shop,but they will heat up ur vehicles.The hooter the vehicle,the slower,and it cools over time.I am thinking of going with this one

Btw I'm just a 15yr old rookie with unity,bosca ceoil and blender.I would really like to get in contact with other gamedevs,as I often get demotivated making games and I wanna be a professional indie gamedev.

Graphics coming together!

Character sprite and background tiles done. Movement and spawn scripts too!

My First Jam

Jammy Jam Time Y'all!

I am going with phaser.io because it seems pretty lightweight and I already have assets to spare.

Time to figure out the story & mechanics!

It begins...

Definitely doing a visual novel! My oh my, it was tough to think of something in that genre with this theme. Digging what we've got so far though.

And a very, very early stage laying out of things in the editor. Hope to have a working prototype by the time I go to bed tonight. Cheers, all!visNov_01.JPG

Well this is my first update on the project

So whats basically my game a space shooter where to upgrade, you ether use some of your hp or some of the shops characters hp to upgrade and make you last longer as more and more enemies come. right now i got player , the enemies, and a small part of the shop! ldjam1.PNG

Isn't this theme EXACTLY like the previous LDJAM? "Sacrifices must be made"

It's my time for "frustrating theme post", I just want to point out that it is basically the SAME theme again.

"Your life is currency" == "Sacrifices must be made"? https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/43

Either way, if someone wants I have gathered some inspirations in Pinterest: https://pin.it/twnios64mgy4id

Just have to decide on what I want to do now..

It's hardly a start, but this is the first time I've used LibGDX or even Java in a couple years so I'm happy. So far it's just an animated button and a custom mouse cursor so I have that going for me at least. The weekend is still young so I just have to choose which one I want to stick with. Maybe something with blockchain..

This is not our first time, but this time we are all in one room! I am sure this will increase our productivity for the Jam.

My Life(TM) is Currency?

M228650emLife/emOrgnl_450g.png

EDIT: yeah this is what I'm doing. more to come tomorrow!

The theme, a bit of inspiration.

I read a self-help book meant for twentysomethings. Someone wanted my opinion on it, and the book was about that the 30's are not the new 20's as so many people preach to justify their lazyness on their twenties to start off their lives and secure their future.

Your life is limited and has very short blocks and stages where you can do certain things to live better:

0-10 years you understand how to navigate the world and interact with it. 11-20 you study to become productive in the world, learn complex skills like math, language, etc. 21-30 you perfect your studies, start working, find a romantic match to keep going on life and have babies. 31-40 Your career grows, your kids grow too and you're settled finally. 41-50 life becomes more quiet, and you take your career to a higher level, your kids leave home and start their own life. 51-60 if you're lucky you get grandsons, prepare for retirement or take your career to a higher level. 61-70 you retire, you have more time for hobbies, family and guide your extended family for the future, start enjoying the fruits of your investments in the past. People you knew starts to die of old age or diseases. 71-80 If you have a good health you keep enjoying life as it is, a bit tired and reflecting on your past, maybe preparing something for the future generations. 81-90+ you have survived beyond average life expectations (75 years). Whatever you do depends on your health and your will. Death - Still unavoidable, and eventually you will be forgotten if you don't do something big for the world. The memory of you will stay with your family, but only a couple of generations. (I'm not trying to be a downer, I'm just telling as it is).

Living a good life is up to you, and if you make good decisions, you'll have a decent, balanced and happy life. But if you go the other way, or are affected by diseases or environmental hazards it could end sooner. If you become an exceptional individual, you'll make a dent on history and benefit or affect others.

Your time is the currency, since it's scarce. Take that as a clue to build the spine of your game. (or quit and go do something more productive).

Another clue for a game could be that with religion factored in, you could trade years of your life by asking favors to the devil or god.

What are you willing to sacrifice to achieve something big or have a good ending of your life?

Thoughts?

Early progress

Well, I haven't done a ton of work just yet because it's fairly late my time. But I did mock up a really crude character model. I have some modeling experience with Maya, but I don't love doing it so I just wanted to throw together some cubes in Unity in the vague shape of a person. Next up, a simple walk animation so I can do the walk script and start on a bit of playable stuff.Character Model.png

My Game for LD44

The game is based on you surviving endless waves of enemies. You only have one weapon, however you can upgrade it to be more stronger. To match the theme and to make the game harder, you upgrade weapons by using your life points. You start with 100 and you can loose them by getting shot or by upgrading. You can heal or regenerate life point but it takes time. Tell me what you think: ld44.PNG

3.5 Hour Mark

I'm about 80 minutes behind my intended Day 1 schedule. I've just gotten some top down movement working. Next is some hitbox and collision work. Hopefully, I can hit a virtual wall soon, instead of just a figurative one.

Core Mechanic Down!

Tons of ideas...finally managed to narrow the scope down to something (hopefully) attainable.progress1.png

We made great progress, have some base code and final background working. Tomorrow is characters and more mechanics. It's time to party!!!

I made some concept idea

I think that another theme must be chosen but i already made some conceptConceptemart.png This will be my third game on ludum dare and my third platformer game on ludum dare. We have main gameplay as platformer. There is button on the right top corner that leads to upgrades.Concept/emart2.pngThere we can upgrade our abilities (like heart bonus,speed ,slow fall). To buy this abilities we need to sacrifise our heart(s).

I've Got My Idea

Unfortunately I also have family. Now I love my family, but some of them believe that things just sound better without headphones. Now how anybody can make out three different shows being played at the same time I don't know. One thing I do know it makes it practically impossible for me to hold a single though in my head. So I guess I'm gonna take a break for now. Fortunately I should soon be able to get to my private workspace and not leave for the rest of the Compo. Until then pray for me and for the love of god always remember to get headphones that have some good sound blocking potential.

4 ish hours in

And I'm still in writers block hell and can't think of anything interesting to do with the theme. :(

We're In!

Forgot to post this earlier in the day, but we’re back with our usual crew with the addition of a special guest!

None of us are new to jams or Ludum Dare, so let’s get right in!

We are accompanied by our friend Zach from Fat Bard this time, so that means our audio won’t be an afterthought this time! lol.

Dan: Code/Art

Zach/Fat Bard: Audio

Good luck everyone!

I decided on Godot, it's neat

I dig it.

Capture3.PNG

It also exports to WebAssembly instantly and painlessly, at ~11MB runtime. Highly recommended for a game jam game, of course.

The new tile set editor is a saving grace; 3.0's lack of one was the only thing holding its 2D tooling back. It's a welcome improvement.

I'm not certain where I'm taking this game, but I have some unresolved feelings about life and living as it pertains to my relationship with capital, if you catch my drift. So we'll see.

Got the basic idea flushed out.

design1.png

2D top down RPG (or adventure i.e. Zelda style). You can trade part of (your life) to death. Death is always around so you can trade with him anytime. He will also comment on you adventure, hence the dedicated portrait window and chat section. Those will be taken over by an npc portrait when in dialog. The left section will show the players health, and how much debt he has to death.

In some ways the layout with the portrait window makes me think of old dos games, and I was not trying to go retro so hopefully it's not just a waste of screen space.

On a side note, I decide the minute the compo started to switch from SDL2 to Craftyjs so trying to learn a new language/engine while making this.

So far I have a solid color background and an animated ball as a placeholder for the Player.

Prototyping

I use to be really bad about focusing not only on graphics, but all kinds of other things aside from the actual game loop. I feel I'm doing better this time.

Disclaimer - This is not how the game will look, I do 3d modeling so I will be replacing these primitives with models. I'm using the LWRP mainly so I can make my own shaders for it, but it's out of preview now and has been really solid for me.

prototyping.PNG

End of Day 1

So far, I found some free art on itch.io (because I stink at graphics) and have planned out my basic ideas. I got stuff movin' and am hyped for tomorrow!

Production Is a Go!

With the basic idea fleshed out, I get some rest for what lies beyond tomorrows dream. I won't spoil it now, but it is a Rougelike for those who enjoy it. If I REALY like it, I might turn it into a mobile game. Anyway, I'm gonna get some shuteye, see y'all tomorrow.

Ran into a Problem

I am making a 3D platformer using Unity and I ran into a problem. I need to set a velocity based on the rotation of the charachter. If anyone can help with this I will appreciate it!

Ugh.

Going to sleep on the theme for now, but I got in a few hours of generic framework coding….

I'm in !

Hello ! I'm in ! I will use Love2D and Lua for programming my game. The theme is very interresting. I don't know if I am able to make a game in 2 days, but I will try.

Good Luck all !

officially happening

Theme didn't inspire me, so I'm making a generic sidescrolling action game for the compo. Will have to see if I can shoehorn the theme in. Using Love2d and Aseprite. Best of luck to everyone! progress.jpg

Progress!

I decided to make an ancient simulator. Fortresses will expand and harvest resources over time. Here's what I have so far (I'm using GameMaker: Studio).LDJAM#44 - Island Generation.gif

I probably have an idea

You are a investigator in a train and needs to save the people (or not, if you want it) paying with your "life" (your vision, voice, hearing and life) to save them from death.

Finally Participating

Excited to be participating in my first Ludum Dare. Now to try and bring this project together before the deadline. Decided to go with Godot. Working on a rogue-like with a partner, super excited about the way we are using the theme. https://www.twitch.tv/livedarkness

End of day 1

Not going to lie, I wasn't quite sure what to make. And I did end up doing something related to blood magic.

My game is about an arena survival game. You cast spells that cost you life to fight off waves of enemies. Art is not yet done, this is only temporary for me to get an idea of things.

I like to think that my entry is fairly simple. But for that reason, I will attempt to really take time and polish it up and provide a nice detailed experience!

Almost 5 hours... need a rest!

sirricho-1.png

I'm loving Ludum! I've been live steaming on Twitch and the pressure just makes you work! Got the basics of the design done - the beginnings of game code working and a shedload of graphics done. Been working since 3AM ;-) Getting some sleep for a few hours and back at it... Best of luck everyone - can't wait to see what games you come up with!

The game and tools we use

What our game is:

You are a slime who broke from the lab they experimented in, that is, you are the experiment. The question is, Is the experiment successful? Slime_Sprite (1).png

Oh, did i mention that you can only use one organ at a time? (Have fun, hehehe)

What we use:

• Unity for the engine • Notion.so for task management and documentaion • Photoshop and Illustrator for sprites and animations. • Gitlab with Sourcetree for project management.

Necro Tycoon

We started our game, it's a necro tycoon where you spend your life to summon skeletons and send them to missions.

We're awake !

The french jammers are awake. Ready for another jam. Our game will probably be a rogue-lite. Let's work and good luck to y'all :smile:

End of night 1

Got some basic mechanics setup and going - collision, camera work, UI, game management. Should be set for a fun day of art tomorrow!!

Concept Comics

When brainstorming, I find that making quick sketches of my ideas in MS Paint helps me to visualize them better. The result was these little concept comics. I didn't intend for them to be amusing, but I found myself really enjoying the process and here we are. If the comics were this much fun to make, I'm sure the game will be too. Now to make the prototype...

Got a bit of progress in! The melee combat mechanic is pretty much done and I implemented an easy Weapon Creation / Swapping thingy. The AI is also flowing in nicely. I'm pretty happy overall!

Here's a laggy gif of what it looks like! (My computer has a lot going on right now, I swear it's not this laggy in-game :sweat_smile: )

Progressing, brainstorming

It's been 5 hours since we are brainstorming, and we think we have a good idea for "Your life is currency" I think we will begin the project in few hours, and start the stream on https://www.twitch.tv/blackpotionhq Good luck everyone ;)

Finally got started

So after 4 hours of struggling to get and idea I have settled for a unique type of adventure plat-former.

I am however very happy with the unique look and feel I came up with.

I just hope it will work for the more complex scenes in this game.

Sneak peak of progress.

After Only 4 Hours, I'm Out - Problems With the Theme

The main problem with LD44's theme is that it's not doing what themes are supposed to be doing.

The rules page for Ludum Dare says "The theme is something we do to help everyone with the “blank sheet of paper” problem that artists and creators deal with." but theme "Your life is currency" doesn't really help with that. The first idea that comes to mind, and the one most people are using by default, is "you use your health to pay for upgrades". That's just one mechanic, and it doesn't help you decide what type of game to create. Some people have decided to be creative by thinking of "life" as experiences rather than health. While that's different, it still doesn't give you much to work with.

I tried to force myself to participate and make a generic platformer, but I couldn't do it. I had so little motivation that the whole time I was thinking how I wanted it over and done with, and even the smallest problem was enough to make me quit.

Anyway, luck to everyone who's still participating!

C.R.E.A.M.

The idea I came up with so far is a game where you pay your bills. I'm not sure how this is going to end up to be honest haha.

ezgif-3-9383f50caf46.gif

Main Menu, check

I guess I'm working a little backwards this time, completing the main menu first before doing any coding. But I have plenty of ideas for the meat of the game, so tomorrow's work can focus on code. itch-jpg.jpg

I've started EXUBER&

So I have a name for my game.

Applewinem2019-04-27/em01-24-12.png

AND I FORGOT THE LETTER B AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Now we have a proper programmer!

My friend has join me to make the game, and now I can focus on the art and he will be programming in Unity. This means that the game will have more quality! After 3 hours, we came up with an ideia that we are very pround, and ready to go!

Next time that I'm post here, I hope to have something to show!

Streaming now

Hey guys I'm streaming my Ludum dare experience now! https://www.twitch.tv/ahagge https://www.twitch.tv/ahagge https://www.twitch.tv/ahagge

First Time I plan to publish

My classes ended just in time for me to jump into this, I will be putting what I have learned to the test (even if its just a text adventure game). Good luck all, and good night for now

My game sucks! (literally)

ld44em2/em0.gif

Ok, so now you can interrupt the conway simulation and "harvest" some of the agents in there. Then maybe these agents become currency so you can do something else? Add more agents? buy more boards? get crazy upgrades? improve your laboratory?

Game of Life + Idle game!?

Germany is also starting now!

I have also finally started to work on my Ludum Dare game. Woke up 2 hours ago and had a bit of a problem with the theme first but now i think i'm on track. I'm trying to do a variation of "Convay's game of life" where your goal is to build the largest possible population out of limited starting cells.

giphy.gif

Is it just me or is the theme basically the same as last time lol ?

Listen everytime a new theme comes out some people are going to be left unhappy. But we had such nice themes this time and you guys pick the one that is most alike the last one we had xD

Anyways i just woke up. Gotta get some coffee and then i will start thinking about how i can incorporate the theme into something without actually making the same game i did last time :D

Hecc Ye!

Lots of stuff going on!Untitled-1.jpg

Need some inspiration

3 hours in and no usable ideas. Have you picked up something for some inspiration? :smiley:

d2.png

if (gamedev_skill == 0) : try LD_compo?

So here I am = a PhD student in seismology trying to make the first game solo! My one and only experience with game jam was on LD32. Back then I made some interface graphics for "An elf walks into a bar" under supervision of @merzlot.

Here a set of tools I'm intended to use: * Godot Engine - first time opening this... * Audacity - did something long time ago.. * Krita + Inkscape - some experience. * Atom - favorite text editor for everything!

Oh, and this is first time I'm actually making silly quiet stream on Twitch

Good luck and passion for everyone!

End of first night, here's some progress

God lives a normal life in his world of gods, where lives are currency. God needs to pay his bills and put food on the table somehow! GodGif01.gif

LD44: My mental block is not melting

The competition started, I woke up in the morning to see what is the new theme and got painfully locked into a destructive mental spiral. I am still trying to come up with something personal with the theme and running in circles, but in the end I still not find myself satisfied with my ideas.

I can join others, who probably brainstorming this theme as well and trying to abstract the idea and come up with some non-mainstream, out-of-the-box or other heretic and newly established routes or bend in and choose the comfort of any possible path as all new idea will become fundamental to a game, where execution will be more important than the implementation of the theme.

Here is my take on this theme's analysis: Your life is currency.

Your: It is the possessive form of you that can refer to you as the one single entity of humanity (or something) but can be the people (or group) in general as well. So I can take a double take on it.

Your life: If we look upon our life, we can see multiple direction to refer to something as life. I can bring in another divider as we are manifestations of three layers: body, mind and soul. Life can be the time of existence, or the body experiences from birth to the grave. What if we include non-human things in existence like animals and other living beings? This way we can refer to any being, that exists in a limited life span.

Currency: As a word it confuses me, as we usually refers to it in a limited way most of the time as money or cash, we can broaden it by referring to it as a medium of exchange. Why don't add a little more property of money to it? We can use it to measure value or unit of account and grab this line to run farther from restrictions of the theme first implementation.

I am still not satisfied by broadening the theme as I still need to come up with an idea simple enough to implement in two days, but comforting enough to love it.

Couple game ideas I come up during these early hours: - You have a series of puzzles to solve in a limited time and you see it clocking down from the first puzzle until the last. If the time runs out you are dead. - A Shadowrun-like game world where you can replace your body parts with cyberware or bioware augmentation. - You are a lover or prince where you have unlimited lives but your other half or princess has limited lifespan. - You are a revolting leader, who either successfully conquer the domain or thrown by your own men. - You are member of a society and you have to maintain its numbers by fulfilling their needs. - Like a mobile gyroscope, you have to maintain balance on a shipwreck, ice field, or a wreckage floating in the ocean, poisonous or deadly liquid and prevent your and others' death until help arrives. - As a nameless soldier in arenas you have to fight for your life and use your sanity or soul as the trading currency. When you sacrifice too much for gain the upper hand, you will lose control over your body (in the form of random actions). - You are one of an animal being, cannibalizing your kind's lesser entities and avoiding bigger ones. - You are working underground or in outer space where your oxygen and food is limited, but you can earn more if your work for them, by mining and trading. - You are some kind of blood, body or soul trading entity, offering your prey to preserve your life. You can be some kind of a golden fish/duck/hen laying golden egg/fox/cow, fishing/hunting/laying/hatching/milking and selling your ware for your life. - You are a hunter, gatherer or farming entity, who is trying to maintain a lifestyle by betraying or outselling your competitors for staying alive and they are trying to do the same. - You are some kind of animated or undead creature playing some friendly card game with your peers offering limb by limb. - You are a master genetic artificial intelligence, who have to create and maintain life with the available genetic resources. - You have a plant or animal and have to fulfill its needs and reach maturity and win the game or you wither away. - Your life is your time, therefore you have to win more time to play more. It can be a being or vehicle you have to maintain in order to reach your primary goal. - You are a summoner, a magical being or a god who can live until it have followers. So you have to find and convert more to strengthen your position. - Your life is your money, or what if your money is created or printed from you or your parts, or sell other's parts for you. - You are a sentient being consumed by a magical vortex and arrive into a world where you are part of something bigger and your goal is to maintain harmony, not falling apart while gather more parts to grow, while eating yourself to gain more energy for actions.

These ideas are still nothing more than mere ideas and since I have woke up, spent nearly two hours at the computer doing nothing, but thinking. It's not bad, it is catastrophic to see I have left 42 hours until the end and don't have anything else. On the other hand, my workflow is broken, I haven't decided what I want to use... at last, I didn't left any time to setup, configure and test my tools. How reckless I was! So what is this force that keeps me alive?

PS: I'm in! After a long time I am back. It will be a solo, compo project this time as my former team seems abandoned.

Time to get started!

Got an empty github repo and a hello world C project. Time to go!

I don't imagine my game will be very complex or complete, since I am writing the whole thing with nothing but SDL2, but it will be fun to exercise my low-level programming brain :)

My "progress"

Well.. I thought it would be good idea to make a time-travel adventure game, so I've implemented a core system aaand now I'm stuck, this is probably too complex. Crap.. :upside_down:

My Draft Idea based on the Theme|| Lets Hope I don't change!

Here's some Jamshot's that I took of my screen to show the development of my project and my plan going forward. It's always good to have a plan going into the development process, it gives you a sense of time and it's a way to keep you grounded and actually carrying out the task before a deadline you create(abide by the deadline [DESCIPLINE])

My Plan: DAY1

*~~Create the environment that the player will operate __(NPC's and Story Arc revolves around the environment since it's going to be a NavMesh System I'm trying out)

*~~Create the Player Controller __(I will be better able to explore the world I create n push myself to take it more seriously plus I can only test the Enemy out once Player is made)

*~~Create Enemy NPC __(Now this is where the fun starts! I Get to tweak the values of the Enemies characters and add or remove features IF I actually get it to work before day one ends)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~MAKE A DAILY MILESTONE AND SHARE, IT HELPS~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Jam Shot 001.png! This is the Start of the environment design Jam Shot 002.pngJam Shot 003.png Aiming to make it a night scene kinna setting
I reaaaaallllly hope I don't switch or bail on this Idea 6 hours from now when I wake up back, that would be havoc! :smile:
Substance Work of the Night
Spent the last hours working on a fully procedural Substance for my grounds.
It comes with fully customizables parameters like grass, rocks and dirt density.
Let's paint it in Unity now ! :smiley:
