LD 44 April 26–29, 2019

Starting now!

Thanks to the different timezones, I was sleeping my sweatest dreams, when LD started. But I'm awake now, had my delicious breakfast and I can start working. I already figured out an idea for the theme, so that's progress. Good luck everyone!

The obligatory I'm in post!

I'm in but Rust is out! Just spent an insane amount of time trying to port my Pico::Engine to Rust+WebAssembly+WebGL... Sure it compiled for a while but sneaking around ever corner is another "cannot borrow as mutable" or reference error or a lifetime descriptor that needs to sprinkled through the entire code base... :( failedrust.JPG

Now the question is what I'm going to use... Either SDL or Pico::Engine me thinks...

A Bit More Progress

Just going to jump into a bit of code to get this running, then heading to bed for the night. visNov_03.jpg

Time to make some games!

It's time to come up with some ideas and hopefully I will come up with something good for this one. Good luck everybody!

Finally Starting after seeing the Avenger EndGame

OMG theme is little tough one.. but after thinking for some time came up with two concepts.. yet to evaluate that can be made it in to an game. Thinking to take small concept and make an multiplayer.

Goal is to learn multiplayer game dev programming first using this JAM time. Probably want to create server with Python or Node.js Anyhow it is challenging.. which gives the enough kick to work on it..

BTW Avengers Endgame is AWESOME

lovely

This theme is probably one of the worst for me, since it also add the "downgrade" feeling, when you pay with your life. Oh well.. Life give you lemon? Make a LD game.

Themes.png

It's a start

I've decided to with a mostly grey scale world with little bits of colour here and there. Not too bad for the first 6 hours. I'm trying to go with a very retro vibe.

gif1.gif

I'm in. I'm in.

I don't have much time, but maybe I can make a small game. Let's Start

These are my weapons :D Capture.PNG

The first steps are done!

At the momment I have the basic mechanics running and some concept art, I'll now make some sprites to see what they look like n-game.

About the theme, it is not what I wanted and I'm going super cliché with the "trade health for upgrades" idea, but I really don't see a problem with it, it's getting pretty fun actually and I think that it will be pretty nice to see what people make of it. Have fun!

concept.png

GG44 gif 01.gif

I'm in?

I have done 22 of these jams now. I always aim to make something big and unique mechanically. And I always end up rushing and failing to make it a 'full' game.

I'm not going to aim for anything crazy this time. I want to make a small narrative game, no unique mechanics, but somewhat polished. My girlfriend @frankydink will be helping me with all aspects except music.

There will be a relatively interesting thing about this game, that you'll see when I release it, but it won't blow peoples mind.

I will rate a lot of games, because I'm usually pretty bad for that.

The game is about a cat.

I wish everyone luck.

too many energy drinks

our leader's had too many energy drinks and is probably going to be up all night, but we're in good shape otherwise. Rest of us have headed to bed.

Unfortunately I am out.

I have caught a stomach bug, and cant really do much work on my game.

Current progress

Alright, day 1 is done for me. I've got to hit the hay and recharge my brain.

So far so good, I've got movement, and most of the main mechanic. Here's a GIF with a whole lot of placeholder art!

Back to Unity

Iterated my design a lot more since last night and now i think try to learn Defold is not my best option in this jam.

So I am back to Unity for another time.

Let's start coding!

I have no idea of what I'm doing

Okay, I've got some ideas on the story for my game but almost nothing for the gameplay. It's Improvisation time!

2.png Half-day work.

Woo! I have an idea already.

Only 50 or so minutes in and I've already fully planned my game. Throwback to LD42 where finally coming up with an idea took 5 whole hours (oof). I'm pretty pumped now and ready to make something wonderful.

Three words: Bar, Poison, Mafia

My very first Ludum Dare!

Two hours of work - including finding the right idea. So hardcore to do the artwork on my own as a programmer. Working on character sprites now. Parallax background ready!

So glad to be here with you guys!

I'm olready get with game idea and start to make it! Here'se the what i have now! Name of my game is "Life Engineer". 78P0xrak[2].png

Got some basic art

Got started a few hours late, but I came up with a concept and made some basic art in Blender ready to render into sprites. Character design inspired by Felix Colgrave.

many hours late

Well im some hours late because it started 3am for me i live in denmark

We almost decide what we want to make!

We almost decide what kind of game we want to make! That is, a game that a worker is hardworking as well as getting older and older, and the life itself is currency! So the currency would be the only way for you to find your youth. Hopefully the boss can pay you more, so that you can live a little bit longer. Of course, you can use your life to buy some extra items to help you get through the stages.

$1%)[M]8UKRD8(7~7N)M`VV.png

If it was just life is currency...

If it was just life is currency then there would be a lot more interesting ideas, but because its YOUR life is currency then that limits things a lot.

Tradition...

Can't start a game jam without posting memes about how bad theme is Screenshot_168.png

Am i the only one

who thinks all the games will be the same, because of the theme?

Time to start!

I just woke up and looked at the theme. Meh, could've been better, but it's not as bad as some of the other options. I spent almost a month making my own engine, but unfortunately, I will not be able to use it, as it's very incomplete. I will probably be using Unity, or I'll make the game in C# from scratch.

Good luck to everyone and have fun!

Let's begin

Well, I finally came up with an idea that I think is worth spending three days on working. This is my first LD in particular, and first jam ever. Not sure if I'm gonna get it done in time, never done any finished game before :D Just wish me luck, I guess?) And good luck to others.

I'm in but not for so long.

This time I have not so much time for the jam so I just focus on this jam on game feel. Want to improve this. Anyway, I wish you all a happy and HEALTHY jam! <3

Good morning!

I just woke up after 5 hours of sleep (eh...). Anyway, I wrote down a couple of game ideas in the night. Now it's time to choose one and hop into Unity!

Starting way to late

It is my first game jame and I am already starting way to late!! The theme is not helping to.

Edgelord

Because the theme is pretty sucky and i have a nice idea for a game that would have fit the theme "underground" really well and I'm super edgy I'm just gonna work on that. Idk, but "Life is currency" is extremely boring because it has just two proper ways to interpret and use it.

Good luck everyone!

My sciatica decided to flare up the worst it's been in months this weekend and I can barely get out of my chair.

Also I am attending two different concerts which together will take up 8-10 hours of the weekend. Not sure how I will be able to walk around right now but that's what friends are for.

So sleep is out of the question. And exercise.

Did I mention I've already wasted the first 7 hours thinking of a game idea?

Time to get to it...

1st time animating!

New Piskel (1).gif

1st time animating a character through piskel! Yea the main character is a cat, because you know, life is currency and cats have nine lives

Qst0 update 0

Progress report!

So far I've been busy making the foundation for what seems to be shaping into a puzzle platformer. I was at first thinking, I want to practice pixel art. So I was going to make something where you have to copy art fast enough (and sell it or something) to have money to eat. Thus, life is currency. You will die without it. But! I pivoted-- I though of an idea I liked more, where you have to make it to the end of a puzzle dying as few times as possible because dying gives makes the skill based pixel drawing puzzle easier somehow. How? well, I was thinking. Ink, but since life is currency, blood ink. A little darker than I normally take it. But I wanted to see what I could do with the effect. I'll need to post a gif of it but I don't have the time or energy right now, almost a full day in. I need to wrap up the game win condition and make it so I can make levels... Time goes so fast!

progress00.PNG

I did end up streaming! Please check it out, I'll have a radio for all 48 hours and I'll be live coding, jamming and real-life-ing. I'd love to have you stop by and chat for a bit if you are not busy with your game or need help on something quickly.

Game document ready

I have everything written down for the game. Gameplay elements, objects needed for the game, sprites and sounds needed. Now... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgzGwKwLmgM

We just woke up with a CrAzy idea!

Crazy idea: We're switching roles. The programmer does all the art and the artist does all the programming. Let's see how this works out! 🤪 (It's 10 in the morning here in Germany)

First "day" done !

Time to go to bed after a small 7 hours game dev time with @DrCheetos && @takayamushi ! Images of our game coming soon ! (Before jam ends if possible).

:D

Idea

Hello again! I hate this theme, but I think I got an interesting idea. For now, basic platformer mechanics and time reversal done:

demo1.gif

That's my first Ludum Dare with JavaScript, loving it :)

LD44 Day 1

I wasn't really feeling too well about the theme until I decided to not make a video game and make a tabletop instead. Now I'm making a card game with draft and trading elements. Thematically, it's about earth elementals fighting a civil war. In order to fund this war, they sell the different minerals they have in their body to buy weapons and whatnot. Their defenses are tied to how strong the minerals are in the different limbs of their body. Of course, different minerals have different monetary value to merchants (gold is more valuable than quartz).

After about 3 hours of brainstorming and spitballing ideas with a friend, I have a somewhat fleshed out design doc. A couple more hours and now I've got a preliminary rule book.

Let the game (meta, you know) begin!

We're joining together with @mekagem this time with support from our artist Anna. Our usual trusty tools - Typescript and Phaser3/CreateJS. Let's get going!

GL&HF

No ideas

Well, I do have ideas with this theme. But none of them seem interesting enough to torture myself the next one and a half day with making. So I'm probably going to go with one of the other themes from the final round, and maybe squeeze this theme in there afterwards if I feel like it :/

Edit: I don't mean it's objectively a bad theme, because it isn't. There's a whole bunch of stuff that can be done with it. I just personally don't find it a very interesting one.

Basic Layout

After tweaking the Eevee renders a bit, I've got sprites in Game Maker. Better graphics to come once the core mechanics are implemented.

Sprites Coming Along Nicely!

I've used Photoshop for the sprites, mainly focusing on the pen tool, drawing it with the mouse would have led to much worse looking art. As soon as I finish all the sprites (Possibly within the first day, I'll move on to Audio! Screenshot_1.png

We've got an idea and some super wippy stuff, time for sleepy stuff

Annoying "Your"

Anyone else finding the theme annoying because of the word "your"? "Life is currency" opens up so many more options than "Your life is currency".

Got my idea ready!

You ever see the movie "In Time"? It kinda revolved around this whole concept: people have predetermined lifespans, and have these digital displays embedded in their arm that show how much time they have left, and they can bargain for more time or exchange it for things.

But if your life is currency, what if it were stolen? What if you woke up one morning and found someone had literally taken your life, and now you only have... 15 Minutes to Live.

countdown.gif

Better start searching.

(Disclaimer: This means I'm not going to be doing the GB-style monochrome graphics after all. Sorry.)

mechanics finished

almost atleast... now moving on to all the assets

No ideas just woke up help

aaahhh EDIT: I've got an idea now! Your life is currency. Your whole life has been currency. YOU are currency. In this game, it's a platformer where you play as a coin, and maybe level up to a banknote if I have time

A.. map?

GhoulThing.png

Well this was going to be my main map of all things. Yes the game was going to take place inside a hideous ghoul thing.

Unfortunately work calls. No making games for fun, gotta make games for money!.

Just woke up

Ok this is sad idk what to do

I have an idea!

First we need to get some electricity... 111.gif

I've found some inspiration

Any ideas about whether I will go crazy by the end of the jam or not, if I listen to Diablo soundtrack for the whole time?

My idea needs it!!!!

Beginning

It's been a while since I made a game, we will see how this one goes. I always wanted to make a tactics game, in the style of Fire Emblem. And I wanted it to be steampunk-themed and have the player control golems. So here it goes.

I'm going to use PyGame, because I think it fits the kind of feel I'm aiming at and I like Python for programming. Details will follow.

Let's go Opensource

so the theme is your life is currency, I think I gonna make something like survival game, well just woke up so some hours has passed for nothing on the dev but still it's better to have a concept first right. Oh, here we go, paper, Godot Engine 3.1 and Krita, or... blender? I'd say 2D gonna fits well in a limited time.

with the power of opensource softwares, let's have fun!

Taking some liberty with the theme

Hello!

This is our first Ludum Dare and to be honest, the theme didn't really inspire us. So, we make the decision to take some liberty and build a simple game without being imprisoned into the theme.

We will make a game where you play a solar panel vendor, trying to sell his products to the citizen of a randomly generated city.

If you succeed to convince the person, she will buy a solar panel but if you upset her, she will fight you! (Then, you should offer her some money to calm her). Yep, this is our concept. :p

Depending on our available time, we will add some modifiers and adjust all the probability and eventually add a final boss.

We don't really know where we going but it will be fun. ^^"

What could go wrong?

It's been years since I last participated on a LD, I decided to start way too late and I'm not sure if I like the theme.

It's gonna be fun! :D

progress

Screenshot (103).png not much, but I think it's a good start

Well...

Hm. Not quite sure what to do with this theme. Kinda of not really enthusiastic about it. I don't like that the "Your" is included - kinda limits it too much imho.

But hey, MTG Pre-Release was great, even though I only got like 3 hours of sleep last night.

All I know is...

...that I may use this little character in the game 🤔

IMG_9345.jpg

(woke up not long ago here!)

We're in!

Just got done writing an exam for uni, time to write a game! Will focus on "currency" more than the rest of the theme. My SO might do some art stuff lets go!

Here we go again

Love this theme very much here's my concept concept.png

Day 1 Fin

Welp. Today was *somewhat productive. We brainstormed a few ideas for mechanics and ended up picking a couple and combining them. Then tried to come up with a theme, and ended up kind of stumbling onto one whilst looking for rhyming words for a silly title. Starting developing underlying code structure for content generation and UI. And thinking about basic level design on paper. We'll see how tomorrow goes!

zaz

zaz. zaz.png ldem44/em1.gif

Why is my code not working?

private void OnCollisionStay(Collision collision) { if(Input.GetKeyDown(KeyCode.Space)) { Debug.Log("boing"); rb.AddForce(Vector3.up * 20); } }

I tested before and it is colliding, but when I press space nothing happens. Using C# and Unity.

Planning to make an Asteroids clone, with a twist fitting the theme.

perlin.gif

Messing about with perlin noise animations. Pretty cute.

Blessings of limitations

Limitations of my imagination that is. All I can think of is a hack and slash/shoot em up type of game, so that's what'll it be. I hope nobody has a problem with lo-fi gore, because that's what's on my menu. I guess first jams demand simplest of ideas, so slaughtering things for a greater life-sapping goal is what I'll be making.

Day 1 "Progress"

I committed to something vaguely in the theme and made some of the hard choices about game design and mechanics.

Asset creation is well underway and I think my plan for tomorrow morning is to finalize the minimal set of assets and wire-frames of the UI.

The game will be 2D and the basic mechanic is sort of in the broader vein of vertical scrolling Galaga games but with timed levels and a health bar.

The theme based mechanic is that on level completion, the remaining health balance corresponds to in game currency for upgrades in the store.

The most basic upgrade will be either an increase in frequency of fire or a spreader.

The bullets are going to interact via sprite colliders.

The game is being developed from a mouse + click perspective [alternatively arrow keys + space]...but I want there to be a mobile or web friendly port on completion (or shortly after).

Looking forward to making some music tomorrow once I've gotten some sleep!

I'll have to be done by fairly early Sunday or else I'll have to submit post Compo since my day will be fairly packed.

We have awakened!

@koalaura and I just woke up and are ready to get jamming!

Night One Complete

Its just about 2 am here in Los Angeles and I've just finished up a really great first night of work! 7 hours of working and streaming, drawing characters, programming movement, and generally getting a feel for what the game is going to be like. I said I would try to blog more this compo, so here it is!

I had a game concept I really like for Space Exploration (looks like I was the only person who like that theme...ah well), where you play as an astronaut floating through space, meeting bizarre characters and helping them solve their problems. So the theme Your Life Is Currency forced me to think up a completely different idea...or not! I thought perhaps using your life as currency could be how you helped people. And in space, your life depends on the most valuable currency of all: oxygen.

So you'll start with a limited supply of oxygen, and you'll have to trade even more of that oxygen in exchange for items to help the strange space critters you encounter. And speaking of critters...the gangs all here!

Capture.PNG

You play as Bartleby, the lovable lump in the middle of the screen, and you'll encounter everything from a businessman to a robot to a sentient pair of pants. They'll all have things they need, so you'll have to unravel the chains of their demands while under time pressure.

In terms of what I implemented tonight, I've got the core movement down -- you click with the mouse to propel Bartleby through space away from the mouse. Base interactions with NPCs has been set up as well; they can check your inventory and you can trade them inventory items or oxygen in exchange for their items. The oxygen system is working as well, though their isn't a fail state yet. And then I spent the rest of the evening drawing characters and giving them idle animations.

Major tasks for tomorrow: an elegant text box system, actual level design and (hopefully humorous) writing, fail and win states, and playtest the holy jeebus out of balance. I want the oxygen system to matter, but I don't want it to be too punishing. So I'll have to play around with it. If the game is short enough, it shouldn't cause a lot of stress to fail and start over. But it might be more elegant if its beatable the first time around. I'll see what I can do.

I had a great time livestreaming tonight, and will be back on twitch tomorrow morning. Stop on by twitch.tv/carlsonandpeeters around 9 am PDT to catch the next phase of my development!

I gonna change the game.

I made some concept base of game but i will change the game mechanic and so one.New project (Construct 2 preview).jpg
