Compo Complete! Meet the ants

That was a hell of a weekend! After 48 hours of jammin', allow me to introduce... Ants, Inc!

My game features 12 unique ant workers, each with their own animation loop. It's been a while since I've done any 2D animation, so making these characters was a lot of fun. Here's a preview of 3 of them:

Cursed Deck - Ban your cards to win

Hello fellow LD-Devs! It is done - again. Finished another game, did overscope but could manage to focus and implement main loop(haha).

Hope you also had a great time! GG to everyone!

Cursed Deck is a Slay the Spire esque game where your goal is to actually ban all of your cards to win and escape the endless loop of drawing cards. You will encounter monsters which... when killed will grant you a prize. Sometimes even the most important one - the option to ban cards from you Deck, Hand and Discard pile.

You have to play smart and keep your Attack cards in your hand at the end of your turn - if possible, because the Ban card will always focus on your Deck and Discard pile first.

Here are two small gifs of the gameplay.

Please leave your entry in the comments - will happily trade rate 4 rate. :)

Done! Friendly Invite you to give us some feedback!

Welcome to feel the atmosphere of our game!

STORY: Player is a boy in this world. Seems like everyone is busy here.

Hi everyone! We have just released the first build of our game! We would appreciate it very much if you could play it and tell us what you think <3

This is not the final build, we will be releasing a new build soon, with several bug fixes and finishing touches. Thank you for your interest and patience!

Sadly no Cube-based game by us

Sadly, we stumbled across more and more issues with our game and due to technical problems the whole gameplay crumbled and it's not really playable

It was anyhow a bliss and we learned a lot of stuff in a positive way and a few negative things we will definitely know how to work upon in the future. Hopefully, we will continue working the project and have a sound, fun to play, and continuous exciting game in the future.

Obviously, we won't keep you alone int the dark and still -- at least -- show you some snapshots of the game:

Playable on Linux, macOS and Windows. Sorry for the lack of a Web build, but Godot's HTML5 export for 3D projects is currently borked.

Finished! Will add more pictures and info soon

After submitting, too hungry and tired to add detailed info and pictures. There is more to come!

Ludum Dare Post Mortem: Cotton Candy Dreams!

Thank you everyone who plays and votes. This is my second game, and my first game jam so it means a lot to me that you're taking the time to do so.

My first game was similar... a ball you roll down the field. But in that game I only used the baked in unity assets. Everything was made from cubes, spheres, and cylinders.

In this game I took it up a notch by learning ProBuilder, and how to shape the terrain. I also built some new, more organic shapes, and learned how to make a glass texture. Coupled with the cotton candy colors, and the pink fog, it gave the game a more dreamy look. I also added the ability to "collect" the crystals, and gave it a cool explosion when doing so.

I tried to figure out how to add a score for the crystal pick ups, but I wasn't able to figure that out in time. Instead I added a little creature to float around the scene and give it more life. It took a few different tests to get the little fairies to move around, but I finally found a great script that made them move around randomly. It added a bit of life to the area.

I should have added some music, but I kept saving that till last because I wanted to make my own so the game was all me... that was a mistake. I'll be adding some after voting is over.

Here is a video about my first game, and what I learned to make this new game (in 48 hours): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcL5zgCceWQ

Overall we are decently happy with how the game turned out and that we got a playable build of the game submitted, considering we changed game ideas halfway through the jam. Had fun over the weekend creating the game and learning so much about game development. Definitely gonna participate in Ludumdare in April!

Really nice Jam

I am happy of the result of the game we achieved to make. Trying voxel art was a good experience, all the team is tired out, but we can finally go to bed proudly

Finally solved deploy problems

About participating that year

That was our first entry to Game Jams in general and Ludum Dare in particular. Despite this, we are so pleasant to state that we've finished our small game in just 72 hours and now can just fall asleep after playtesting few other games ^_^

To sum up, we need to prepare much more with our base ideas and developments, take a little bit more care about mental preparing) Hope you guys also had so much fun and did your game well! Please, present your games with great game-pages and screenshots and let's all take a great 22-days game testing streak!

A little bit about our game 😊

* "Escape this testground!" * That's a game about a lost robot, which has stuck at stranger's test ground. That stranger uses main hero for his experiments with compression and kills him each time for his own purpose. Player will help our main hero to pass each level using all the death ways he has and finally try to escape that weird place. Or... Or you'll help him stay there forever

You can easily check out our game's page and give us your feedback! Game is available for quick in-browser play at itch.io, by the way

Unity tilemap and composite colliders problem!

When doing my game, I could not get boundary colliders work properly. All the movement is transform.Translate, collisions are tested using raycast 2d. Rock boundaries are in tilemap and have tilemap collider 2d and composite collider 2d on them. Whenever I test for hit, it always hits boundaries, even when raycast is within the area with no actual colliders. How can I make this work? What's the workaround or solution?

Thanks for any input!

Loopertary! Arcade like gameplay visual and sound

You are stuck in the same level of your favorite arcade game... how long can you play on this loop? How many times can you show the boss: who is the real boss!

This is my second Ludum Dare. I was waiting months for it and apply the lessons from my first entry, therefore this game is full of sound, color and a good core loop.

Special thanks to my wife for supporting me in this madness and looking forward for your feedback.

Howdy, everyone! This Ludum Dare was a lot of fun. It was crazy hectic at the start though. I spent the first 30 hours just prototyping ideas until I settled on my entry. But I'm extremely happy with my game. I took the extra 24 hours to really cake on the polish and it makes such a difference. Play, rate, and let me know what you think! Introducing U.F.O.M.O.!

ezgif-7-db5b051c2f70.gif

Play it here!

I worked on this Ludum Dare with my partner. We interpreted the theme as "stuck in a loop" of checking phones and social media, so we made a game about an alien trying to juggle multiple phones at once!

Work started on Saturday, and was totally scrapped and redone starting Sunday, so this one went by even faster than a Compo entry. We're both proud of the end result!

hey all guys, hope you are done your games and they are great! Just want to share our game to the community. Nothing special, our first game. But at first, you can think that. The truth is, what happens if objects that you need to throw off the platform returns? But you need to throw it off to complete level. Heh, you can deal that puzzle, trying to complete our levels. Just try it :) First two levels is for beginners, next three is for pro's :)

It's not perfect, and it has a few bugs, but we absolutely loved making it and will likely continue to improve it, add more levels and try to make some of the crazy ideas we had during the 72 hours a reality!

It's honestly mean the world to us if you tried it and let us know what you think! We've been so close to the game, we're not quite sure how to balance it or what is actually working and what just screams to be removed.

Any feedback is good feedback!

For all programmers(and non- programmers)out there: Come play with the FOR loop!

My game "Stuck in a FOR loop" is about changing the number of objects in a repeating scenario in order to make way for the character to crush the "bugs" it encounters!

It is the first time me and my partners try having a single texture for all the models in the game!

Let me know what you guys think! 38032.png https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/stuck-in-a-for-loop-1 Made with Unreal Engine and exported for Windows 64bit.

First Game Jam, had a Blast

For our first jam, I'm pretty proud of the work we accomplished. We had a great idea for a looping platformer, and while I think a more experienced team could of done it more justice, we all learned a ton and I'm confident our next game is going to be 10 times better. If you guys could check it out and give us constructive criticism, we'd greatly appreciate it.

My Bloody Baron post-mortem (also about Among Us, Danganronpa, and party games)

Lately, I've been playing a lot of mystery and detective games. My gateway drug was the Danganronpa series, which I already fell in love with at my first Class Trial. I'm already a sucker for good character design, even if the characters' personalities seem a little bit over the top (and if you played DR: Trigger Happy Havoc, you've got to agree with me on that), but the trials were when the game shines the most: the animated next, presentation, the expressions, plot twist after plot twist. I can't overstate how hooked I was.

Ever since, as a long time game jammer, I was waiting for the opportunity to make my own detective adventure. This compo was when I finally gave a shot at detective games, but with my own twists.

Why "Bloody Baron"?

The general setting of the game is a kingdom where a political assassination has happened. And pretty much all the possibilities point to someone who's a noble. The king, very upset, decides to lock out all the suspects in a building with no escape, until the killer themselves is executed.

Therefore, Bloody Baron alludes to one of the most famous serial killers in history, the Bloody Baron of Brittany.

2020-10-05_21-21.png

The game design

My main inspiration for this game was Werewolf/Mafia, a party game that is the bane of my existence, because I love it so much, yet I'm absolutely terrible at it.

Detective games are complex. There must be a mystery and it must be engaging. There must be barriers towards solving this mystery, but they shouldn't be too overwhelming. There must be a motivation to do it. When it comes to Danganronpa, the motivation is pretty clear, you want to survive. And that's true, in general, the most basic motives are the ones the player is most likely to go with.

Because I already needed to handle this complexity, I decided to put everything else out of the way. Literally. Everything else.

And that's when the idea of text adventure came to mind. I had played some good ones in the past and wondered, this could work.

Some concepts were borrowed from the DR design, indeed, like the nighttime. The nighttime is supposed to make you approach it in a different way, you can't always be as careless, but maybe, exploring during nighttime could give you important hints to whom the killer is!

As for procedural generation, I'm no stranger to it. I attempted it at my first compo entry, Dream Roamers, in 2017, with a fairly good result. It can get cheeky to promote your game on the premise of procedural generation, though, even when it's something like generating the map, so we can put that aside, and focus on what the game needs to be: an exciting and dangerous mystery.

Character designs

I'm a big fan of the guideline "show, don't tell". So instead of going with a huge lore dump at the start, the plan was to give the player the pieces to glue together and find out the story behind Bloody Baron. Even though that was the plan, showing and not telling is sometimes not as easy as it sounds.

Characters were designed on the run. Even if I'm kinda proud of my work, it could've gone so much better. Many of them had potential and were underdeveloped simply because I ran out of time. Chio, as a war criminal, should be the prime suspect right off the bat, but maybe he isn't really the murderer. But I couldn't get that across simply because time ran out and I had to ship the compo entry without anything on his description. Same for Odette, and Larissa, which were characters I was proud of designing but the players probably won't see them shine for what they are.

Since this is a game by me, catgirls are necessary. Luna, the catgirl, was actually the first character that came to mind, as some kind of comic relief to the whole situation.

I can't help but make lore and characters for my jam entries, and that has thrown me on the dirt, too many times. It happened in the Ludum Dare before, it happened in the GMTK game jam this year (yes, there were catgirls there too) and it will happen again.

Finishing the game at the very last hour, and the first feedback I got.

This game had plenty of breaking bugs when I first submitted it. You couldn't reach nighttime without the main thread panicking. Inserting out of bounds input caused the IO to hang indefinitely. Voting in the trials had a chance to crash. Those were the first things I've heard from players, and frankly, after spending my weekend locked down in my room doing one thing and barely leaving to go to the bathroom, it is just a little bit disappointing.

The process of bouncing back was mainly using debuggers and trackers and finally doing some play testing, which I didn't do much before. After I tightened up some screws, people actually seemed to like the game. I got a lot of positive comments after that.

About Among Us and my other inspirations

Among Us was definitely a factor in building the hype for my game. I can't really say it was a direct influence, because I never really played Among Us. Even then, I always liked the concept, and have been looking forward to give it a go for some time.

While Among Us and Werewolf were so much about the mind games between people, and Danganronpa is about concrete clues that the murderer lefts behind when committing a murder, the intention of my game was to be about logical thinking and building trust among the people that are there locked with you. I can say for certain that all of these games played a part in my decision to make this entry, but they aren't the same as my entry. I feel like I succeeded in making something that bears its own flavor.

TL:DR, and advice for new jammers

In general, I managed to make a game that had an interesting concept, and people will agree that it was fun indeed, but was buggy as hell at first. What I learned with that was to spare more time to play testing. It's just as important as polishing.

As for the things I got right, I think my choice to remove everything out of my way and make a text adventure so I could focus on building the mystery was definitely a factor. So, it's not always about making the scope simple, but picking your fights. And don't pick them all, or you're gonna get smashed.

My 23rd LD and, holy shit I made something really good!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJSug4iChtw

I think it's hard and people won't beat it but go have a go, I promise. I can just feel this one is the best game I've made

Cover Image.PNG

Had to scrap an entire days worth of work because the original idea didn't work but I somehow managed to pull through with a new idea! Played a couple games, looking forward to play more tomorrow after my brain stops being mush.

Come play it here, it's HTML so no download necessary https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/loopy-orbits

The Pleasant Feedback

tallymarks_header2.png Ya'll are so sweet. I am so surprised by the support. I was really nervous about Tally Marks even though I shouldn't be. I guess it just comes with the territory of being a Game Developer. If you haven't gotten to play my game yet you can follow the link below this paragraph. I wouldn't have been able to do any of this without the person I worked with either. It's really great. Thank you so much everyone.

Also since this is my first Ludum Dare, I don't really now how rating works. I mean I know how to rate things, but what does the voting and everything actually do?

Humor is Serious Work: My LD47 Postmortem

Hey all,

As is tradition, I try to do a decent postmortem on any entry I finish. Here are my thoughts on the weekend. You’ll want to use the restroom and top off your coffee first.

Thanks! Todd

Outside The Loop made it!

I finished my game, Outside The Loop, with 1.5 seconds left in the development stage of LD47! Anyone want to try it? It's a platformer with a fun twist. And of course some loops to get stuck in, since it's LD47!

Come try it out! Thanks to the positive feedback I've been getting from players, Outside The Loop should be getting a full version available soon! I wasn't able to implement all that I wanted to, but the full version will be epic!

(That we know of!) We've seen people make it to level 5, and a death on the final boss... can you beat it and make it to New Game+ for the extra characters?! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/derps-n-dergs-one-shot-to-save-the-world

Traveling the Wild West

Lasso your way through a dangerous path in Traveling the Wild West!

QOL Updates

Hey everyone! Thanks so much for all the support so far on my LD47 compo entry, it means a lot. I made a couple QOL improvements based on comments i've received: namely jumping with up arrow works now, and the spawn rate was fixed since it was a bit too high.Check it out here (since I'm not sure if these qualify as bug fixes): https://nethead.itch.io/soro-boro-updates

Thanks again and congrats to everyone who finished a game, really amazed with everything i've played so far! <3Screenshot from 2020-10-04 12-55-17.png

I'm In!

I forgot to say I'm in for my 22nd Ludum Dare event... And was very busy frantically sound, music, art, and programming our game to post. @naali and I made our first Sequel, the original game is seven years old, and it's really cool to see how much we've grown.
