This is so great, a huge thanks to all of you

logo.png This is my first Ludum Dare and going in, my thought where to just finish somthing and it turned out in another, more unexpected way. Let´s start from the begining. I code for pleasure and fun, I am not very good and I can´t use blender or any other cool software. My initial thought going in where to make a physics based game without any fancy animations with other peoples models. I was aiming for the JAM, even though I am a solo-dev, just to get an extra day of work and so that I could use other peoples assets.

The theme was announced and I was planning on what to do with it. My initial thought was a kind of top dow/third person-space-vehicle racer. I started with making a cube that I stretched out to the shape of a yellow space-thingie (still just a cube). To make it more graphical before I added a model later I smacked on two blue blocks tilted to represent the cockpit glass. I added two point´s, one in the front and one in the back. I then just added forces for the horizontal and vertical axis. If you press forward, the mainEngineForce is applied straight from behind in the aft point, if you turn, forces are applied to the forward and rear points vid forces from the side. Now the physics was created and is pretty mouch the one that is shipped in final version.

My camera-follow-script was a bitt laggy, especially in the web version so I replaced that with a static camera that looked at the player and changed the FOV depending on the vehicles distance to the camera and I got that to a nice state. So on to the next part.

To have a place to drive the vehicle I made a small track made out of plane´s rotaded in 15 degrees intervals and then added railings, the first thing since the vehicle to have colliders and placed them around the track. I now was a short nights sleep and 12 hours into the JAM and my friends started to wake up, I pestered them to beta-test my game, a huge thanks to you guy´s for helping out with feedback, and one thing was given to me across the board. Your car is way to slippery. hmmm It is not a car it´s a space race-vehicle. Well, I tweaked the camera and vehicle-performance to handle better and I started to add an UI and a menu. At this point, still quite early on saturday I was fairly finished with the main gameloop and I decided to try to aim for the compo instead of the JAM. That meant I could not add nice assets and that I had to do my own.

boxy.png This was the game state when I went to bed on saturday evning and when I woke up on sunday it was clear to me what I had to do. If everybody thought it was a car, I had to make it into somthing people understood. But what had these kind of physics. I came to the conclusion that a hoovercraft could be possible and after a couple of iterations I landed on using a swampboat.

A quick redesign, just using unity cube´s offcourse, and I hade made the reneck swampmobile. swamper.png This design sparked my imagination and the story of a redneck, stuck in a loop, unable to get home, started to form in my head. Then It was the dreaded sound design. For my space craft I had made a swooping engine-sound by recording a compressor and beating and looping the sound in Audacity until it was atleast a bit SCI-FIy, well that did not fit the swampboat. So a new sound was needed and I took a walk around my home looking for things with a more corresponding sound. I found my snowblower in one of the outhouses and recorded it on a couple of starts and a continous running sound. Back to audacity, and It did not turn out perfect but acceptable.

And now, it was a simple downstretch in just populating the swamp with trees, And did I do that, you have no idea. I made a couple of base-prefabs and dupicated the heck out of them. The scenery looked amazing, I exported it and started the game. It was unplayable. Totaly unplayable. Apperently webGL-version don´t like lika a million threes made out of 10 cubes, very strange. So I had to start with the optimizing process. Tree´s was removed and mountain-cubes and hills was added instead.

The last thing I had to do before submitting the game was finalizing the online highscore system. Since I already have a webserver for hosting the game, I threw togheter a snappy little PHP-script and a MySQL-database. Unity is now able to ask for the top ten times and to store a new laptime, as of just now over 400 laps have been compleaded and logged to the database.

The startscreen got the finishing touches and I was wondering how to avoid the dreaded wall of text to explain the backstory and I turned on the mic, moved it away and just yelled it out. Smack, good enough. I exported the project again and playtested yet again. Well, everything looked like expected and I realized I was finished, with four hours to deadline. So I started to upload and make my game-page. It was at this exact time my Internet decided it needed a break. With whooping speeds of up to 0.5 MBIT/s it took me three hours to upload all the needed files and this turned out to be the most frustrating thing the entire weekend.

The game was published and a feeling of emptyness and meeningless started to spread, well, now what. Maybe sleep before work tomorrow and remember, it´s just 6 months to the next jam.

So, to finalice this very very long post. Thanks for emverybody that are leaving me feedback and rating my game, it is far from perfect but I have learned alot during the weekend and will do better next time, maybe I even will start to look into that blender thingie.

If you havent tried it out yet, It would make me a happy little coder if you did. The game can be found at: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/redneck-raceway

ME! vs The Unrelenting Alien Invasion now has a WebGL/HTML5 build

Capture1.PNG

Hi folks!

I usually try to do a Windows, Linux and Mac build for my LD games but I ran out of time for it this time around. So, to make sure people can't accuse me of being a Microsoft shill, I've updated my game page to include a WebGL build.

It was a little funky to get working properly (of course, I'd use the version of Unity that has a mouse inversion bug for web builds!!!) but it's there now. Aside from the weird WebGL input issue, all of the original bugs are alive and well! :laughing:

On another note, I've played some amazing games so far!! You people are awesome!

Question about scoring

Hi!

I just had a general query that I was unsure of. Once you pass 20 votes in a category, will your final score be higher the more votes you have? or is it an average of your scores.

To put that into perspective, would 96/120 (for 24 votes) which creates : 0.8, be better than 390/500 (100 votes) , which comes to 0.78 ?

So to sum up, will you get a better score the more votes you have, or is it purely on how highly you are voted?

Thanks!

(p.s, shameless plug xD: My game is here https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/project-l-o-o-p)

Question - Changing Game Description Pages Post-Compo

Hi All. Quick question - is it considered to be against the rules/spirit of the compo to change your game description or itch.io game description after the 48 hour window has passed?

I ask, because a lot of the feedback I'm getting highlights the fact that I don't really give in-game instructions of what the player has to do, which leads to a confusing experience. I completely agree with this feedback, and improving the way I convey information in-game is part of the post-mortem I've started for the game. In the meantime, I was hoping to update the game/itch.io descriptions to include some better instructions, but don't want to do this if it's going against the rules or spirit of the compo.

Bad start, decent ending

Morale was low in our troops. Turn-up was bad. But we pushed through the first day, and got something done with an idea of the game.

The second day we got some really nice music from our music magician (whom only had a little time to help). This heightened morale, and we pushed through another day and got something playable. Although only with crappy developer graphics.

The third day, our graphics guys had some free time and we got some really cool graphics too. We played with some postprocessing effects, Visual Shader Graph (that apparently isn't supported in WebGL, so had to redo it with the Particle System), and made the game too hard again.

If you want to see the ending, try hitting 'n' for next level. :)

A game about pressing buttons

Feeling bad yet?

If you, like me, went through ton of other excellent games, compare it to yours and feel sad about it, don't be.

I love all of the games I've seen. I've tried to give an honest feedback because I'd like to keep the event fair, but I'd give everyone all 5s, because making something is great. Making something that works is absolutely fantastic. You had one less game in your portfolio past weekend. Now it's one more.

ABOUT :

Overall we are decently happy with how the game turned out and that we got a playable build of the game submitted, considering we changed game ideas 48 hours into the jam, leaving us wth a day to create the entire game including all art and sound effects. If we had had more time we definitely could have made the game better and stuck to our original concept for the game. Had fun over the weekend creating the game and learning so much about game development (Learnt how to use arrays confidently, made my first own random generation system, learnt how to use the animator with multiple states with ease) . Definitely gonna participate in Ludumdare in April!

Stretched to breaking point!

So like in all game jams everything is very hectic at the last minute. With only a few minutes to go I noticed a potential bug when two systems came together.

In Sushi Ink you can chop up ingredients and you can also place things on the conveyor belt. Both systems work (mostly as intended).

However we realised because the ingredients are placeable you can also chop ingredients whilst they are on the conveyor belt... even when the conveyor belt moves the ingredient further away than you can reach. This leads to the tentacle being stretched to breaking point and suddenly pinging across the screen like below

ezgif.com-gif-maker (3).gif

Although my initial thought was to panic we'd missed a bug so close to submission, I realised that actually it made sense and i kind of liked the results :shrug: Who knows, maybe this is part of the pro strat that helps someone finally get 3 stars in level 5

If you want to give it a go yourself you can play Sushi Ink here! and be sure to comment if you found any other fun ways the mechanics work together!

Did you find any last minute surprises on your game? what were they? comment below!

Love the feedback on my game

I would love some more feedback on my game seeing that it was my first game jam. I want to learn as much from the experience as I can.

Based on the Groundhog day idea, you need to repeat the day and get your responses just right in order to progress to the next day.

Will love to add more days and towns folk to the game after the voting is done. And fix some bugs! :tongue:

Please let me know what you think. I take all critique!

Cursed Deck

Cursed Deck is a Slay the Spire esque game where your goal is to actually ban all of your cards to win and escape the endless loop of drawing cards. You will encounter monsters which... when killed will grant you a prize. Sometimes even the most important one - the option to ban cards from you Deck, Hand and Discard pile.

You have to play smart and keep your Attack cards in your hand at the end of your turn - if possible, because the Ban card will always focus on your Deck and Discard pile first.

Here are two small gifs of the gameplay.

Simple input manager for Godot

HONK II has gamepad support, but I didn't manage to improve it during the jam. However, I have special input manager, which is very helpful when you need to switch between different input devices on the go and when some of your mechanics have different logic for different input method because of their specifics.

Make this script autoload and enjoy. Hope, this code will be helpful.

``` extends Node
enum InputDevice { KEYBOARD, GAMEPAD }
const JOYDEADZONE : float = 0.3 const JOYID_DEFAULT : int = 0
var currentinputdevice : int = InputDevice.KEYBOARD var joyidcurrent : int = JOYIDDEFAULT
func input(event: InputEvent) -> void: if (event is InputEventKey or event is InputEventMouse or event is InputEventMouseMotion) and not iscurrentinputkeyboard(): currentinputdevice = InputDevice.KEYBOARD Input.setmousemode(Input.MOUSEMODEVISIBLE) Events.emitsignal("inputdevicechanged", currentinput_device) return
if (event is InputEventJoypadButton or event is InputEventJoypadMotion) and not is_current_input_gamepad():
    if event is InputEventJoypadMotion and (get_analog_right_direction(event.device) != Vector2.ZERO or get_analog_left_direction(event.device) != Vector2.ZERO):
        return
    joy_id_current = event.device
    current_input_device = InputDevice.GAMEPAD
    Input.set_mouse_mode(Input.MOUSE_MODE_CAPTURED)
    Events.emit_signal("input_device_changed", current_input_device)
    return
static func getjoyanalogdirection(joyindex: int, axisx: int, axisy: int) -> Vector2: if joyindex < 0: pusherror("Gamepad with index %s not found" % joy_index) return Vector2.ZERO
var joy_x = Input.get_joy_axis(joy_index, axis_x)
var joy_y = Input.get_joy_axis(joy_index, axis_y)
var joy_direction = Vector2(joy_x, joy_y)
if joy_direction.length() <= JOY_DEADZONE:
    joy_direction = Vector2.ZERO
return joy_direction
static func getanalogrightdirection(joyindex: int = JOYIDDEFAULT) -> Vector2: return getjoyanalogdirection(joyindex, JOYANALOGRX, JOYANALOGRY)
static func getanalogleftdirection(joyindex: int = JOYIDDEFAULT) -> Vector2: return getjoyanalogdirection(joyindex, JOYANALOGLX, JOYANALOGLY)
func iscurrentinputkeyboard() -> bool: return currentinput_device == InputDevice.KEYBOARD
func iscurrentinputgamepad() -> bool: return currentinput_device == InputDevice.GAMEPAD ```
Updates for the future...
ezgif-7-5360f81b7e4d.gif
I won't be implementing any changes until after the judging is over, but I've already made a lot of changes due to suggestions from the reviewers. Thank you all!
I found a way to make objects float and spin, so now the crystals aren't floating in air. I also managed to fix the AI for the fairies so that they stop falling through the ground. Fixed the lighting issues with them as well.
Most of these are just minor tweeks to make an already nice looking environment a little more immersive.
The next step will be more levels, and trying to figure out how to make things load and unload depending on how close you are to them. I think if the fairies and crystals are only loaded in within a platform of you that will make everything run better.
If you'd like to see updates to this game please subscribe. And thank you for reviews!
LD47 Post-Mortem
Summary
Among Stars and Robots is our third Ludum Dare-entry together but we have been working on games together for almost a decade now. We decided from the start that we wanted to target a WebGL build that would work on as many devices as possible, which meant we had to go low poly and simple materials only. This would also let us bang out a lot of varied content in a short time.
As usual we spent the days leading up to the start brainstorming ideas for the various themes that were up for voting in the last round, only to scrap all of them the moment the final theme was revealed. We quickly settled on the idea of programming a robot with a looping set of instructions. After dividing out some tasks we both went to bed to get to work early the next morning. If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the years is to eat, sleep and shower for a more enjoyable and productive game jam experience.
assets.png
What went well?
We are very happy with the end result of this jam. The development process went smoothly without either team member feeling blocked by the other at any time. The first thing we made was a custom level editor inside of Unity. Any waiting time could then be spent brainstorming new levels or iterating on existing ones using this editor.
The biggest contributor to the end result was probably our planning process the first night where we mapped out a Minimum Viable Product and having a strongly established art style to adhere to which really helped us stay focused and keep the scope of the game down.
The code this time around was relatively simple, there are no animations other than simple tweens and no (significant) custom shader magic going on. Instead we focused on making the core mechanic interesting and the presentation really juicy. This is why we put a lot of focus on the level transitions for extra visual flair which from the feedback we got has been one of the most appreciated aspects of the game.
Trying to learn our lesson from our last attempt at Ludum Dare (Pull the Levers from LD46) where a lot of people struggled due to the lack of a tutorial, this time we tried to add better tutorialization in the form of three introduction levels and a simple animation in the first level to explain the controls, as well as an infographic on the itch page. But, as it turns out, this still wasn’t enough.
level_editor.png
What went bad?
As mentioned above, the tutorials didn’t manage to help players all the way to success. The first problem was the detector command which is introduced in the third tutorial level. This command is significantly different from other two commands previously introduced (turn and move forward) which are both very simple to understand. Players initially tended to dismiss the detector command as something that would not be needed to complete the level. The level was then solved either by trial and error or by consulting the included infographic. In conclusion, this command definitely required much stronger in-game tutorialization.
The second problem was our difficulty curve. Once players got past the tutorial they were introduced to the hub world. The idea was that the initial position and view direction of the player would guide them to the easier levels but this didn’t work because first and foremost, we messed up the actual ordering of the levels. Second, players did not seem to care and just went to whatever level caught their interest. Many did not even realize they were in a level select world. Luckily we implemented a home button that would let players return to the level select without completing the level so if they got stuck they could try another one instead. The level select definitely needs some kind of indicator for how hard each level is so players can progress in a more logical manner without getting frustrated.
asar_2.png
The third problem was some simple but very important UX features we failed to implement. Between levels there is a variable amount of commands allowed in the player’s loop but there is no indicator of that, so many players thought it was the same for all levels and got stuck on the ones that required more commands than normal. The other problem is that you can change the loop while it is running, but changes do not apply until you click stop and start again. Many players tried to change the loop and got confused why the robot kept repeating old commands. Both of these are easily solved and with hindsight it’s obvious that we should have prioritized it a bit more. Fixing these problems solves a lot of headache for the players.
Another mistake we made was including too many patrolling police robots in our levels. Just like the player, the police bots execute commands of their own, but there is no real way of telling which commands they execute. As a result their behavior is very hard to predict and forces the player to resort to trial and error in order to beat the level, which is not something you want in a puzzle game.
What next?
So what’s next for Among Stars and Robots and what lessons should we take with us? There’s definitely a point to be made that we need to work even more on our sense for difficulty scaling and progression. There’s a clear improvement just looking at our Ludum entries where our latest game is by far the best in terms of difficulty and tutorialization but there’s still a lot left to do.
Had we done more testing with someone outside the team before release we probably would have been able to catch those few UX problems and prioritize them so that’s definitely something we will look at in the future. As for what else lies in store in the future we will see. We are both overwhelmed with the positive response we have gotten so far and the game feels like it could turn into a really fun full game so it’s definitely on the table to make a full production game out of it.
We hope you enjoyed reading this post-mortem about some of our experiences from this jam, if you want to try our game check it out below and let us know in the comments of some of your own ups and downs from this event!
I'm stuck waiting in the bus, anyone knows a mobile game entry I can play? :sweat_smile:
Thanks!
Another - the post-compo version
logo
Today I finished the post-compo version of my submission, Another
I remade the title screen, made a few changes to the rhythm of the game so it would feel more natural, and revamped the UI. Also “the deep ambient noise” that people said they liked was actually a music track that wasn’t finished properly, and was quite silent in the game. So I did some work on the music as well. I hope you’ll like the new and improved Another.
Some question about ludum Dare
Hi, I have some question that need answering because this is my first ludum dare game jam
1: What is different from last time's game jam from this time, Because this my first time.
2: Is the coolness points only based on if you rated somebody? Because someone can just leave others half a star (Lowering their rating) and still get a coolness point. (I won't do that because that is unethical)
3: Is adding a new control considered a new feature? Because I forgot to add WASD to my game and I want to add it now. because I don't want to go against the rules
4: Is there a problem with the ludum dare site? Because the site somtimes does not let me do anything like upload a post a blog, play a game, comment or check my messages and the buttons do not respond, and when I try to reload it just starts reloading forever and will be like this for a while.It happened even when I was writing this. Is it a problem from my side, if it is please let me know what to do. if it is a site problem please fix it because it is annoying me. here is an image
Quality Or Quantity - A Brief Post-Mortem
37ffc.png
Going It Alone
This was my first solo jam of this length and scale, and I definitely learned a few things the hard way about scoping out a solo project, even with a deadline as seemingly forgiving as 72 hours.
As such, I figured I'd write down a sort of 'post-mortem' of what I think I did right and wrong based off the feedback I've received so far from the people I've watched play it.
Content Over Systems
One of the bigger mistakes I think I made was prioritising developing 'elegant' systems for the game as if I was building something bigger and with more longevity. Sometimes you really have to remember this is a jam game, not a commercial product - its okay to code things with shortcuts that make it work, even if the code would make you shudder to revisit it.
Unfortunately, I do not listen to my own advice and spent a lot of time working on elegant systems for spawning, a scripted boss fight, health / enemy systems etc. I think if I really focused on just making stuff work without any bells and whistles, I could have saved hours here.
The result of which is I think the game's core gameplay and loop is solid and satisfying, and the polish feels very good - but there's just not enough of it. I have a generation system that spawns a procedural loop made up of different rooms, but I didn't have enough time to make enough rooms to make them feel varied and interesting, or to add cool secret rooms to the pool to add replayability.
I think in gamejams of this length, its important to focus on content and solid gamefeel above all else. Well structured code is for your day job!
37ff3.png Some ranged enemies launching their fiery spit at the player. Gross.
Similarly to the generation, I spent a lot of time making 2 enemy types that are on the surface quite basic, but spent a lot of time making their background workings more elegant. The player doesn't care about how well your enemy's code is structured - they just want more enemies! I wish I had instead tried to fit 1 or 2 more distinctive enemy types in instead.
Especially as this is a Jam game and not a Compo entry, content takes precedence over code quality 100% of the time in my mind, and I'll try and force myself to adhere to that principle in future solo jams.
Cheers!
Ouroboros is available here to try out if you fancy, would love to hear your feedback if you have any. I intend to release a follow-up patch to add a lot of extra content post-LDJam, so feel free to follow me on Itch or Twitter if you want to be updated.
Chicxulub Timelapse
ld47_24.gif
I'm the main programmer of Literal Games, where we made Chicxulub in 72 hours with pico8. I made a timelapse of the two and a days I spent on the game. Have a watch!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTnMP0kV79U
Chicxulub is a "bullet hell" game where you play as the asteroid which wiped out the dinosaurs. There are dinosaurs in spaceships and screen filling bosses - if you're interested, you can find it here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/chicxulub
I'm in the process of writing a more detailed post mortem, especially around how we managed to get the entity movement and waves set up.
How long can out tentacle tech reach? pretty far...
Decided to run a test today to see how long I could make the tentacles in our game Sushi Ink.
long tentacles (2).gif
so it turns out i run out of screen space wayyyyy before the physics break down :sweat_smile:
We found varied tentacle length a good mechanic to layer in like in level 2 below where two tentacles can reach the whole conveyor belt and two can barely reach anything!
Stuck in Paris - Stats
In our game Stuck in Paris, we implemented a level system, where the game gets progressively harder. We also have an online leaderboard that allows us to see, how far our players got and where they stopped.
We also have a (still ongoing) contest, where when you reach level 20, we create a custom car for you and add it to the game.
The resulting stats for the highest reached level per username look like this:
ld47 stats.png
A few takeaways from this are: - Most people stopped after the first few levels - But quite a few try hard to get to level 20 (which I at the beginning thought to be impossible) - So far, we had ~250 unique usernames playing our game. Thank you so very much for this! - Tracking stats is fun, really insightful and we should have tracked way more :D
If you haven't already, try out our game and if you get to level 20, ping us and you get you own custom car or easter egg. Like Pomo the dog on top of a car. 398c0.png
Cyclic Devlog - Making a game in 48 hours with no Unity Experience
I made a devlog for the game I made for LD47!
The exit is in -----, V2
Hi the community !
After a few days of being sick, I've tried to fix the biggest issues of my second LD game, without doing too much (it's still a tiny game made by a beginner ^^) : redone the movement, fixed a camera bug, played with the animations to make them a bit quicker (and make it so when you land, well, you land), fixed a bug where the enemies would still be able to attack once dead, fixed a bug which made it so the end would never spawn, and tried to do so you can't get back your jump by jumping in a wall (even though it's still the case). I've also removed the double-jump, it was buggy, didn't help in the long run, so I'll rather not have it at all.
The V2 and V1 are both available on the same page : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/the-exit-is-in
I'll like to redo much more, but I think I'll end up starting from scratch and doing something entirely different as I'm not really happy with anything in there, so I think this is where I'm going to stop for this one.
My first LD I did an interactive software and that was saying a lot, second LD I did a micro-game that isn't really good or innovative or beautiful but can be described as a "game" without having to stretch the definition, I'm gonna consider this a major progress =).
Age of Amperes - Mini Post-Mortem
This jam went a lot smoother than in April I think. I'm tempted to do a slightly more detailed retrospective on how the April and October LD Jams went for me at some point but I think the main things I learnt were:
It's really useful to have a lot of time to actually play your game.
April's attempt suffered a lot I think because we spent so long trying to get everything as close to mechanically functional as possible, I didn't actually spend a great deal of time playing the game to get a feel for what a good level would look like.
This time enough of the game was in place to have a play around with level ideas really early on, and having a design that allowed for a bit more modularity really helped. Seeing a lot of early ideas not quite working lead me on to ideas for a few of the components used in Age of Amperes.
Preparation is important
I didn't really use the practice weekend in April - I had a quick look around for some JavaScript libraries I might be able to use but didn't really settle on one enough to focus in on and properly learn. From a code perspective I wasn't really confident enough in the way JavaScript handles things like classes and inheritance to take advantage of some time saving language features I'd have been able to use more naturally in C++ or C#.
This time though I'd started playing around with PixelBox in advance and threw together a few basic prototypes to get my head around how it works (a Frogger clone and a simple collect the coins platformer). I'd also crucially found a physics library that was more geared towards game physics than proper physics simulations - it's not really the "proper" way of doing things but doing a lot of directly setting velocities rather than using forces makes much more sense to me for game coding.
Capture.PNG
Overall I've found my second LD Jam has gone a lot smoother and I'm far happier with the game we've made this time round!
Plays and ratings much appreciated :smile: - Age of Amperes
