Ludum Dare 47 October 2–5, 2020

Astronaut Plus Skateboard 2: post-jam development progress

I've been working on the game daily since Ludum Dare ended polishing things and upgrading the systems under the hood to work towards the next biggest challenge the game would need to overcome: functioning multiplayer, where everyone can interact with objects on planetary surfaces no matter where/what the host is doing.

AstronautsSunrise.gif

It took a couple days to make it work, but here we are. Though there are some bugs here and there, and finding eachother is incredibly tricky when you have entire planets to search (even just 3km in radius = ~113.1km^2 of surface area to explore, after all!), but it works well enough I was able to run a half-hour long playtest session with two of my friends. We built a giant ramp on top of a mountain that you could just about get into the deep-space reference frame just from jumping off of, and watched the sunrise from on top.

basebuilt.png

There are now ten buildable objects, and some very basic gameplay in the form of refueling/re-oxygenating by harvesting the various crystals on the planet, as well as gathering resources from those that don't have specific use-cases to construct the aforementioned buildable objects. You can customise your astronaut's colors, and those colors will be applied to whatever you construct. All of this works in multiplayer, no matter who's on what planet, nor when they connected to the server, and without bogging the game down with hundreds of network-update calls per frame as would happen if I just used standard UNet for all objects.

Earthlike.png

This beta build is not yet publicly available, but if you've played/rated the game and want to see it evolve, let me know in the comments and I'll chuck an Itch key your way in some form - this'll also be free access to the post-jam version when/if it eventually goes commercial.

Additionally, as with before, if you want me to play/rate something you've made, let me know in the comments and I'll gladly take a whack at it - my brain needs a day or two off from crunching out code!

Favorite LD47 Games & Comment Your Games!

I'm tired of browsing "all games" looking to see if anything catches my eye. I'll go with the faster technique: Comment your game down below and I'll play it!

Well, I've been saying for a while that I'd release a list of what I think are the best games this Ludum Dare. It's time for the eight best games, according to my opinions! They're all really good.

(Spoiler alert: I already revealed to some of the developers that they get to be on the list.)

MY EIGHT FAVORITE GAMES:

(Note: most of these are not in order because I didn't feel like picking favorites that intensely.)

-- Anything For You

An emotional narrative game about family and the past.

-- Defuse In Under 5

You don't have long before the bomb blows up! But don't worry, you're stuck in a loop.

-- Office Dating Simulator 2020

Bored of being the mail guy? Try starting a relationship with someone and see how it ends!

-- Save The Prince

An epic 3D virtual board game about the quest to free the prince.

-- Box Hole

Your job: drop the boxes in the boxhole. Do not ever disobey the rules!

-- Stuck In Paris

Try and get out of the Place Charles de Gaulle in Paris without causing an awesome car wreck!

-- Lunar Loop

You're alone in the space station. You have to manage your health and the station at the same time, so make sure to watch out for warnings!

-- Loopamonium

You, the red cube, must master being stuck in a loop to clear the levels!

Well, that's my eight favorite games! Some of these still need some more ratings, so please help them out!

I've played dozens of great games this jam and couldn't name all of them, so if you don't see your game on this list, don't worry! If I haven't even played your game, give me a link in the comments down below!

And of course if you want yet another recommended game, my play-in-the-browser game is

Thoughts about jam tools

In the days since the jam ended, I've been thinking about the tools @nikolai-shkurkin and I used to make Boomie, and what I would like to carry forward to the next jam. These are some of the tools I personally used on Windows 10. Nikolai did all of the sprites using his new app FTLPaint, coming soon to mobile!

If you use one of these and have any pro tips, please leave a comment!

boomieemloop/em2.gif

Gameplay Tools

Phaser 3 - Highly recommended if you have a programmer on your team

https://phaser.io/phaser3

Phaser is a native HTML5 game engine geared towards programmers. Overall great, and it doesn't have a huge learning curve. Phaser 3 docs and examples are vastly improved from last time I tried using it, about 18 months ago. Things I want to try next time: learning the Scene system, and using TypeScript. The worst part of programming Phaser is debugging - certain mistakes don't throw errors and take ages to track down in javascript. Also, pro tip for Unity people - Vector2 operations in Phaser modify the original vector 😭

Tiled - Recommended for 2D games if your engine does not have an editor

https://www.mapeditor.org/

Nikolai wrote the importer and did almost all of the level design, and I only used it to make a couple of the rooms. The workflow for me was very smooth and visual. It was super easy to go in and make tweaks in the levels too. Tiled is not as integrated as e.g. Unity or Godot's editor, but really amazing for a platform-agnostic tool. Shocking that it is free as well.

tiled screenshot.png

Audio Tools

Bfxr - Highly recommended for game jams, basically no learning curve

https://www.bfxr.net/

Ultra fast. I wish I had actually put more time into the sound effects using other tools and Freesound. But with BFXR I had all sound effects implemented within about an hour. Its crunchy style sounds very appropriate for a pixel art game too. There are a few synth controls towards the bottom that I didn't have time to learn, so I will give it some practice time before the next game jam.

Bosca Ceoil - Highly recommended for game jams or playing around, very small learning curve

https://terrycavanagh.itch.io/bosca-ceoil

I found Bosca Ceoil in Itch's recommendations on bfxr. This tool is great for tracking music super fast. The controls are very intuitive and simple. Good built in instruments, and there's a nice low pass filter with resonance that you can put on each instrument. Great options for scales and shuffle tempo. Exporting is trivially easy. My only gripe with this one is there is no undo button, which frustrated me a couple times when I accidentally overwrote my main melody, instead of creating a copy. But if you want to write music fast, and have fun while you're at it, this is absolutely the way to go.

bosca screenshot.png

Audacity - Highly recommended for any audio editing on Windows

https://www.audacityteam.org/

This one goes almost without saying. Audacity is a free and incredibly powerful tool for editing sound files. I use it all the time, especially for getting samples from Freesound and combining or tweaking them to create sound effects. Didn't get to use it a whole lot this time around.

Other Tools

Paint.NET - Highly recommended for non-artists who might need to tweak art assets

https://www.getpaint.net/

Been using Paint.NET for years now. It is a pretty straightforward image editor with great support for layers and transparency, so is great for doing tweaks and edits on PNG images. I sometimes use this to make sprite sheets but it isn't really built for pixel art, animations, or digital painting - just editing.

Screen2Gif - Highly recommended for...GIFs!

https://www.screentogif.com/

This was not used to make the game, but it is a super easy way to make GIFs of your screen on Windows. Comes with a ton of options for recording and a little built-in editor so you can tweak your loop. I use this at work all the time to show my co-workers what I'm working on, or to record funny software bugs.

boomie path.gif

Web Server for Chrome - Recommended for testing HTML5 games

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/web-server-for-chrome/ofhbbkphhbklhfoeikjpcbhemlocgigb/

Making HTML5 games typically requires you to host your project on a local web server to load everything right. I found this utility on the Chrome store and it worked super well. You just pick a folder on your computer and press a button, then you can load and play the game as if it was on a website. Next time, if we use TypeScript, I will probably switch back to using Node.js as a system for building and testing. But if not, this will absolutely be my go-to.

That's all for now. We had tons of fun building Boomie and also playing everyone's games! If you have any specific tips and tricks for any of these tools definitely leave a comment 😁

Try out Roller Riches, and please share your game!

Thanks to everyone who has rated our game and provided valuable feedback! We really appreciate each and every comment that is made  Roller Riches is an incremental game where your goal is to build a roller coaster that coaxes poor suckers (your guests) out of their money.

RollerRichesSmall2.gif

We're thinking about redesigning and rebuilding this game from the ground up as a fun long-term side project, with a focus on adding more traditional incremental game mechanics (prestige, multiple currencies, an actual semblence of balance, etc...)

Please feel free to post your game, and I promise to check it out! If you're interested and haven't given Roller Riches a try yet, please check it out here!

It's The Leash I Can Do

Hey guys, continue helping some favorite games to find audience and get reviews. Today is a 'good boy'-day. Check and review this one! It's The Leash I Can Do by @kurt-roembke, @those-30-ninjas, @mcovert and @hemlocksoames

cameo_leash.gif

Hiya! I wanted to share in depth what I used for the jam, you can use them too!

𝗖𝗼𝗱𝗲:

For the code, I used Construct 3, with only two days of experience from it (along with 1 year of experience from scratch and 2 months from unity) I got the hang of it really quickly! So, if you really want to jam but don't know how to start, use consturct! You can use scratch, too, but Construct is just better.

𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀:

Well, to be frank, for the music, I just used OpenGameArt, but for the sound effects, I used Leshy SFMaker, it is like sfxr, but it is online, so no download.

https://www.leshylabs.com/apps/sfMaker/

𝗔𝗿𝘁

Okay, so that art. The art was made using PhotoShop, my brother made it, if you don't have photpshop, you can use free sofwares iike gimp or paint.net, there is a lot to choose from. Here are the links for the softwared I mentioned

Paint.Net

That's it for me, folks!

LD47 - My challenges

After a good night of sleep Friday evening I woke up at 5AM and saw what the theme was. "Stuck in a loop". I think like most people my enthusiasm about this weekends theme as neutral.

First I had to come up with an idea because I actually did not have any thoughts about the themes before hand. I came up with an idea where you control a spaceship and loop around planets, but that idea because uninteresting and I searched for something more solid.

That is when I came up with the idea of racing a vehicle on a distant planet almost like the POD races in starwars. After that the game evolved a few times because of some personal restrictions and I came up with the game I release...

Ace of Rope Postmortem

death1.png

"Postmortem" means "after death" so here is Death, the final boss, and the post is after this picture so that's a literal postmortem I think?

This is a quick summary of what I learned from all of this. A longer version is on itch.io.

In the previous jam, I put my game ideas in a text file before theme announcement. Right after I woke up to a big "Keep It Alive" on the front page (not among my favourites), this file was completely discarded. That turned out to be a good decision.

Here, "Stuck in a Loop" was the kind of theme I was quietly hoping for, not because it is easy, but because it is hard! I mean, because the idea in the text file was relatively unconventional. That also turned out to be a good decision.

Morale of the story: there is no superior creative process? It depends not only on you, but also on the theme.

Apart from that, I used Godot Engine, Aseprite and LMMS (with the sfxr tool) for audio. Same thing as before, except I moved from Krita back to Aseprite. The impact on the art style isn't really noticeable.

The game is very well received, with some minor flaws I'm working on. Next release will be right after rating ends, just in time for Halloween!

LD app?

I think an app for the LD site would be awesome, you could get notifications a week in advance of when an event would start, and just in general you wouldn't have to open your browser to check manually if you had notifications

(Comments on your game, theme reveal, replies to your comments. These could all benefit from notifications)

I think that would be awesome!

Impact Juggling: How's the leaderboard looking?

Impact Juggling is a fast-paced arcade game all about keeping up to four balls in the air while racking up points. It also has a rather small feature that I'm nonetheless proud of: an online leaderboard.

demoemgif/emsmall.gif

Before the jam, I was already toying with the idea of adding an online leaderboard to my game, so I prepared a backend for that and published it here. Luckily, I got to use it! And man, I'm glad I did. Seeing the scores you guys achieved is every bit as awesome as I imagined. I know that people have to play the game to rate it, but now that fact somehow feels more real.

Let's have a look at the current score distribution. There have been a total of 81 submissions. The histogram below excludes the top three scores because they are so much higher that the graph would have been useless.

out_plot.png

The mean of all scores is about 911 and the median 470.

Clearly, this game isn't exactly easy  That's usually the case with my jam games. But most players seem to do really well!

The in-game leaderboard only shows the top ten scores, but you can take a look at the entire leaderboard here.

The current highscore lies at a whopping 13320, which is absolutely insane! I did not expect anyone get a score that high. Congrats ben!

🎾 Think you can beat the highscore? Test your skills here! 🎾

(And don't forget to rate the game!)

Did you ever finish 3% of what you wanted to make?

I know i did, in our Taxi driving game.

Marked yellow is the area i initially outlined as the map, and red is what i actually managed to make in the jam. If you look closely, you can even see the buildings in the red part. dresden_scope.png

It is about 3% of the area that was planned - but still enough to work well for the game. The bigger scope would have required much more complex systems - with the small part, i can keep the whole simulation running and don't need to load and drop chunks, and i can display a readable city map in one screen without scrolling.

Anyway, i always like to see what the initial ideas or expectations are, and how they hold up to reality.

Streaming LD Games and Giving Feedback - TONIGHT

As with previous years, I'll be streaming LD games and giving feedback on stream over at:

https://www.twitch.tv/honestdangames for about 5 hours today.

I only play entries if the developer is in chat. If a game is called but no developer is in chat to respond within 60 seconds, the game is removed from queue. This may sound harsh but it rewards those who are actually present, and ensures I get through games pretty quick. It also means those waiting in line do not need to worry about people who missed their game coming back later and jumping back in line ahead of them.

Here's a compilation of the great reviews you gave to Lily the Bee! Thanks :)

Lily the bee is a small and cute game about a bee that tries her best to defend the hive! But there's a twist...

"Cute art and great storytelling, a real [REDACTED] though, [REDACTED] Lily" - Cubiclaw

We had to redact some information in the reviews for you to enjoy the game fully!

"Absolutly great game, love the little story and the voice acting was great (You need a pop filter though :P). the art ist cute and wholesome, and lilys [REDACTED] was so [REDACTED]." - loligxp

We learned our lesson with voice acting, the pop filter will be here next time!

"Very cool game! I like the story and the plot (Bye Lily :( ). I think you could have talked a bit louder instead of whispering.

Overall, youve done a great job :)." - Apfel

Here goes my ASMR career dreams

"Not bad." - daine0

Concise.

"super adorable little game, Lily immediately caught my attention, I’d appreciate Lily’s stinger being a little more visible and maybe a little faster, the little bits of narration between stages was super cute too, nice work!

EDIT: the narrator’s voice was pretty pleasing to the ear as well, just, throwing that out there" - Kassie Kitsune

An appreciated edit

"So cute! Loved the art style, was smiling the whole way through ( [REDACTED] ). An adorable little story. :)" - Kitiliisu

We're happy people found it adorable! (apart from [REDACTED])

The experience was great, and we learnt a lot on game design, music, graphics, and code. We're also really happy most people were able to grasp the hidden layer of the game!

Confined: a text-based Post Mortem | Part 2

  pm_logo.png

🎮 PLAY CONFINED (WEB)

Check out Part 1 here.

Spoiler Alert - if you'd like to play Confined, you're better of reading this afterward instead.

Part 2: How About That Post Mortem?

What I Actually Made

Confined is a linear narrative text game divided in three stages, best (and obviously) described as the start, middle and ending.

The Start

The introduction where the player finds out they are imprisoned in a cryogenic stasis chamber for a crime they do not remember. The purpose of this ordeal is for convicted criminals to be rehabilitated in order to safely return them into society.

The player meets an AI named MAA (or the Mnemonic Assessment Algorithm) which is designed to assess whether the player remembers their crimes after they come out of rehabilitation. At this point the player learns that RA, the Rehabilitation Algorithm, is offline and MAA also doesn't work properly, rejecting the player's answers and returning them to rehabilitation no matter what the player says. This process runs three times (or more, if the player gives the same answer more than once) and is meant to frustrate the player. This part was a bit of a risk, normally you don't want to frustrate the player at all, but I felt that looping back in this manner was a solid reflection of the theme. Additionally, even though RA is offline, 10 years pass on each loop.

Once the player has given three different answers they are moved up to PEA, the Psychiatric Evaluation Algorithm designed to figure out of a prisoner is of sound mind. This AI, being more advanced and realizing there's something wrong, provides the player with access to the System Maintenance Network, a back-end system where various AIs can be switched on/off and accessed. The player has to figure out why the system is not functioning properly.

The Middle

By turning off MAA and/or PEA the player can redirect power to RA and talk with the AI. This starts some back-and-forths with PEA and leads to a dialogue with the Firewall, a watchdog AI that protects an archive named Data Storage. Once in Data Storage, the player stumbles upon a log entry written by the former warden of the facility. Here they learn about the facility and more about who they are and what has happened in the past. (I'll leave this vague in case you'd still like to play the game.)

The End

Upset by what they learned, the player is directed by PEA to PAA, the Prisoner Adjudication Algorithm that has the authority to release prisoners from their stasis. As dialogue progresses, the player is offered an alternative explanation as to who they are, and finally is offered a choice that leads to the end of the game.

What I Wanted To Make

I had two main goals this jam: 1.) Write a non-linear narrative, and 2.) Code a clever logic system, what turned out to be the System Maintenance Network. Both of those goals were basically failures.

As mentioned above, this is a linear narrative game. That's not what I initially wanted. I was hoping to include branching story lines, giving the player more agency in where the story goes. Writing the story chronologically, I was often as lost as a player of the game might be. I didn't know where any of this was leading. At one point I intended to at least split the player's dialogue points in 'polite' and 'rude', and reflect that metric after you finish the game. All those things turned out to be too ambitious.

Additionally, the depth of interaction with RA and the Firewall was very lacking. I had bigger plans for this, especially planning to have a chance to run into the Firewall upon each algorithm transition once activated, but I just ran out of time.

The logic system of System Maintenance Network was meant to be a lot more advanced. Initially I wanted the AIs to each have various personality sliders (empathy, authority, etc), as it were, and the player would have to rebalance their personalities using the available power to get the correct settings to pass them. Looking back at that idea now, that was very obviously too ambitious.

As I worked on the game, I decided I wanted to change the look of it using the CSS functionality of Twine 2. I hadn't changed my previous Twine 2 projects, Fight a Monster and Grid Game from the default look at all, and I figured I could get the game to feel more like its contents by having a light (#eeeeee) background with big dark text on it.

I wanted to add character symbols for each AI so the player could more easily tell them apart. Normally I am just the graphics guy of our Ludum Dare entries, but given that I was going at it alone for the first time I figured this could be the one bit of clear visual design I could implement. I managed to do this, but I wasn't necessarily satisfied with how some of them turned out. MAA and PAA are a mother (who wakes you up from your sleep) and father (who sets you free in the end), which I was happy with, but RA doesn't necessarily look that much like the Egyptian god, and the style of PEA just doesn't really match the rest. Ideally there would have been a clear single style in which all those personalities were reflected.

pm_icons.png

To Summarize

I overscoped hard, but there was an acceptable minimal viable product within the broad confines of my concept. I wanted complex story, I settled for simple story; I wanted advanced logic, I settled for simple switches. If I were to go at another project alone, I hope I will remember this lesson: that overscoping isn't necessarily a risk if there's still a satisfactory finished game in there after stripping down its complexity.

All those disappointments aside, I was very pleased that I managed to write a full narrative, start to end. While I've always been drawn to writing, these days I don't write fiction for a hobby at all. The last time I wrote anything complete was many years ago. Sitting down and deciding I needed to do this and then ending up with a story that - judging from the comments on the game - seems to have entertained people, well that just puts a big smile on my face.

Next Ludum Dare I do hope to group up with @daanvanyperen again, but it's nice to know that within these simple confines I can leave my comfort zone and make a cool thing.

Thanks for reading, I hope this was a useful insight.

If you like, you could play CONFINED for a while.

The inspiration behind SkyCrawler's core mechanics

Just a little story of how I came up with the whole gravity mechanics.

Thinking that time loops will be prevailing on this jam, I've decided to go with a spatial loop. At first I remembered this film/cartoon cliche, a forest where if you go in some direction, you always return to where you've started. But this gravitated me towards the whole rougelike/timeloop thing, plus I couldn't come up with some interesting mechanics.

And so, I had a vision in my mind. This vision:

promo2.gif

After that, things went smoothly.

Because I've read Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game" a while back, I immediately knew this will be a game about breaking your stereotypical concept of gravity, thinking of gravity outside the box and using that to solve platforming puzzles.

With that in mind, I started desinging my levels, trying bit by bit to push out of player's head the notion of gravity as the thing pointing down. And that led me to making SkyCrawler: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/skycrawler

* Good luck, jammers, and remember, the ~~enemy's gate~~ next platform is down. *

Pseudogravity

Enter a Door and the Room Rotates

by Nothingness (@nothingness), and Remus Rain (@remus-rain)

What is the game about?

You’re stuck in an endless pseudo-gravity cube. Whenever you go through a door, the room rotates in that direction and you come out on the other side. The goal is to get a cube on all of the switches in a level via gravity. Whenever all switches are activated, all doors become exits to the next level.

Broken unity WebGL

Hello, I developed my game in the unity game engine, and after the jam I wanted to add WebGL support to my itch.io page. But I have failed, every time I load it up it just shows screen with the backround color of the camera, the thing that bothers me the most tho is that the music loads, but any of the other game objects don't. So if you know how to resolve this issue please let me know in the comments. Also if you want to play my game here is a link: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/reincarnation.

  • effects (screenshake, particles, etc..)
  • Better Sfx and music
  • more speed to the player
  • tune the difficulty
  • powerups ( make the loop(Circle) size larger again, more types of guns, etc...)

Godot Games on LD47

1200px-Godot_logo.svg.png

Glad to see more and more people using the Godot Game Engine. It's a really great engine, and the fact that it's open source and runs on all platforms is worth a 1000 points. Plus, the small size is a huge ++.

Every LDJam, I feel like there are more submissions using it, and it makes me happy.

If your game is made using Godot, post it in here, so I can give it a go.

Here is mine if you want :)

Cheers.

My toolset for jamming

I didn't use much tools working on HONK because I always try to keep everything simple.

  • Godot Engine. I switched to this engine this winter and I'm happy about it. It's fast, light-weight and easy to learn and to use. Of course, it's not ideal and has its own downsides as well as other game engines. However, in my opinion it's the best for jamming.

  • Asesprite. Although I don't make 2D art and work with free assets, I use this tool to work with pixel art assets. I think, it's the best tool to work around pixel art.

  • Affinity Designer. In my opinion, it's the best vector editor in the moment, I've used it for 5 years so far.

  • GitKraken. I tried a lot of different git clients, and this one I love the most, the only alternative for me is terminal.

My first game jam. - Such a rewarding experience!

In the beginning of 2020 I started with gamedev and watched hundreds of YouTube videos about it and started with unity. I instantly loved it. I've watched many videos about game jams but never felt ready for a jam before. This time I thought: "Nah, why not." and I'm so happy about it. I've never thought that I would receive so much feedback for my first game jam game and the whole process to create a game and publish it in so short time was connected with so much learning.

Thank you all guys! :)

Here is my game btw: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/loophole-4

I'm live playing your games again!

The broken palette swapping of "It's The Leash I Could Do"

3673c.png

While working on our game (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/its-the-leash-i-could-do) one of the features we really wanted to make sure to include was some character diversity. Since our game is about helping people find relationships (however abstractly), we had two core concepts we wanted to make sure we included in the game: 1) Same-gender pairings 2) Multiple represented ethnicities

The first was really easy. Our artist (Andrew) made a sprite for both a female and male-appearing character and we simply spawned & matched the characters at complete random.

The second was more involved - it'd involve either a lot of sprite tinting and copying, or some clever palette swapping tech.

As an engineer/programmer (and someone who works on mobile titles for a day job), the answer was obvious here: Have the artist make one sprite, and palette swap it.

If you're unfamiliar with the term, palette swapping is conceptually relatively simple: every pixel of a certain color in the source art becomes replaced with a different color based on the new palette.

There's a couple different ways you can perform this swapping, but for various reasons, I decided to try to accomplish it in a shader. I settled on a paradigm: Since every pixel in an RGBA32 texture is 4 bytes, each color channel is represented as a value from [0-255]. I'd take the value of one of these color channels (specifically the 'red' channel), and index into a long thin texture 256 pixels wide. Whatever color I found at the index would be the replacement.

And it worked great - here's an early test case of me swapping two of the greens of our tree sprite (one of the first that was ready) with some yellow and red (forgive my color choices, I am not an artist): FallTreeMaybe.png

I went ahead and attached this to our npcs, and set up a whole bunch of code to dynamically mix different color 'sets' (for example: a clothing set, a skin tone set, and a hair color set) to generate a combined palette texture programatically. Here's an example of our interface for swapping these: swap sets.png

And it worked (but, sadly, I have no screenshots of this brief golden era). And then I implemented our NPCs animations - really, just a simple sprite swap every .1 seconds. And then I went to bed.

And I woke up the next day to reports that the palette swapping was... sorta broken. Animation was causing artifacting, and certain colors were just never swapping. The problematic colors included skin tone... which was most of the point of the feature. Zooming in also showed color bleeding, which totally shouldn't happen with point filtered textures - left is the swapped character, right is the unswapped character. Notice the strange 'outlines' on some of the pixels. Here's a shot from when I briefly had the skin tone swaps fixed again, showing the color bleeding issue - note both characters are using my palette swapped shader, but the right one has a 'blank' palette swap applied (i.e, it just renders the original image): color bleed.png

So I spent a few hours debugging this, and couldn't actually isolate the issue. Instead, the longer I debugged it, the less reasoanble the issue seemed to be - pieces of the problem seemed to start and stop occuring with no rhyme or reason. I knew it was tied to the larger texture sheets we were using, and I suspect interpolation is problematic somehow, but nothing I tried seemed to fix it. Normally I'd give myself a day or two to 'reset' on a problem like this and come at it from a fresh angle, but... no time to do that in a jam.

So our team talked about what to do, and decided to just live with the current state of the art when we went live. So that's the story of how palette swapping totally doesn't work in our game, despite me wasting ~8 hours on it.

The cheerful upside is that in the week since, I rewrote how I handled all of it. I built a few components that generate a mesh from an input sprite, and assign it vertex colors - these are working great, and I look forward to using that approach next time.

A sneak peak behind the scenes of one of the tools we used for Sushi Ink

Sushi Ink uses a conveyor belt in every single level. *level 5 even has two.... if you can reach that far ;).

The problem with conveyor belts however is to achieve the smooth curved loops we wanted in the game we needed to use connected bezier curves (a series of mathematical equations). Our team had only one programmer but everyone would need to share the load in level design. Either because of that... or maybe just because I hate myself, I decided to create a conveyer belt tool during the jam. This allowed everyone to easily place, drag and drop control points within the editor and get real time feedback on how it would look.

ezgif.com-gif-maker (4).gif

You can see the results above which I'm pretty proud of. It was a tough call with only 72 hours to get things done, but i think taking the time to unlock the rest of the team is what helped us to produce 5 levels within the jam. Despite some rough edges this is definitely something i think I'm going to take from this jam, polish up, and use in other games.

how the tentacool works.png

are there any assets, code or ideas are you going to take away from the jam and implement in another project?

(HTML 5 VERSION): https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/stuck-in-a-christmas

What changes should we make?

If we were to do anything post jam, should we do these changes and what other changes should we make? 1. Make jump space and make kill e/q 2. Better lighting for ghosts 3.More levels 4. More cosmetics/outfits 5. getting rid of this levelScreenshot (50).png 6.Actual music 7. Wires that run along walls 8.fixing bug fixes (such as ghost rarely being very slightly off and spikes that come up on you don't kill) 9. Fixing broken levels 10. What else?

Feedback needed!

Hi there! We started working on a post jam update for our game, Suicidal Boyfriend. We really love to see what we can work on to make the game more playable for you, after the voting periods ends. We're currently have a TODO list that I'm posting here:

  • Put a Video tab in Settings menu (with resolution selector, a fullscreen toggle and a high contrast subtitles toggle, that are set on ON by default)
  • Put a Graphics tab in Settings menu (with graphics quality selector and Vsync toggle)
  • A graphical way to see in-game how to skip cinematics
  • A few more clues for some methods
  • An Extra menu tab, to see cinematics in every moment or see all the concept arts that we made for our game
  • A way to make "How to play" font bigger.

So, please, try our game, rate it and comment on how we can improve or beloved creation!

Crash Thunderstud Returns : A post jam update JUST for you !

CrashThunderstud.png

As people were having complaints and issues playing the game on PC using a mouse, I have spent today to create a more elaborate version of the game !

UPDATES

  • 2 additional types of zombies
  • loops stay longer, reducing the need to continuously circle enemies
  • upgrade events are now bound in a shop, allowing players to chose a powerup at any time when they have enough points (stack amount is limited)
  • slightly rebalanced scores
  • fixed difficulty ramp bug
  • added more sound effects

Feel free to play this version here ! The original version is also still available. Ratings and feedback are ever so appreciated!

Aside from this all, I have been streaming daily for the entire week and today my throat was a bit sore and I don't want to bother you with a shot voice and stuffy nose. I still plan to do streams to rate entries though ! Keep an eye out at twitch.tv/drjavasaurus or drop me a DM when I'm not online :).

To all you jammers, you rock and thank you for making this Ludum Dare and the process of rating amazing !

I just wanted to thank you all out there for taking some time out of your day and playing my game.

Always double-check your submission!

We submitted our game on time Monday night, and all seemed well. Until a couple of days later a commenter asked why she couldn't vote on Graphics, and we realised the horrible truth: in the rush to submit, I had mangled the categories, and accidentally removed Graphics, so my teammate wasn't going to get a score for their hard work making original sprites and backgrounds for the game.

There's no way to edit that part of a submission, so I had to send an email to the administrator (https://ldjam.com/contact). After a bit of back and forth we got it fixed, for which I am eternally grateful (Mike is a hero), but the real lesson is: prewrite your submission and double-check it after agreeing which categories you're entering for!

Unfortunately the late addition of the Graphics category means it's a lot of votes behind the others and still needs a few more to get a score, so if you have a moment feel free to drop by and take a look at our game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/express-without-remorse

(feel free to skip Sound, however)

Post mortem additions to Hoop Hopper

(Check out the second link to Newgrounds also please someone tell me how to decrease the screenshot sizes)

After receiving feedback, I added the following features for the post-mortem version on Newgrounds - * A common feedback I received was how it doesn't encourage the player to leave the safe zone. The safe zones are intentionally placed in the game to allow the player to breathe, so instead of removing them I added a streak multiplier so players who act fast and think on their feet are rewarded. streak.PNG * If you login to Newgrounds, you'll see a button that shows you the leaderboard for the difficulty you're playing in on the game over screen (hopefully). It was the first time I've used the Newgrounds API and it was a nice learning experience. button.PNG scoreboard.PNG * Also minor bug fixes, though nobody mentioned them.

the best part for me and for others who have tried it, is the "new mechanic" implemented in it. what do you think?

We've just updated Pillars of Anguish!

Have you played our game yet? According to 23/24 people, it's definitely worth it! Check it out here!

The game

Pillars of Anguish is a mildly novel spin on a platformer. Death isn't what you're used to, and you don't need to hit ultra tight movement combos, but there is a new mechanic that we think might interest you.

Pillars of Anguish cover image

The changes

  • We've added an option to skip dialogues. When they feel slow to you, press [X] to skip.
  • A sound effect trigger and some volumes have been fixed.
  • The spikes have had their collider size adjusted.
  • The platforms at the end of level 1 have been rearranged a bit, to prevent player falling to their death and still finishing the level, and to make it harder to accidentally block the path.
  • In the final level, we've improved visuals to make it clearer, and fixed a bug where player could fall into the abyss.
  • We've fixed a couple other minor issues.

Follow this link; https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/dolen-days-working-title

This is a game we created for the Ludum Dare 47 game jam. The theme is “Stuck in a loop”.

You play Dolen. A young man who has started a new job and moved into a new apartment. The game shines a spotlight on the issue of balancing work life and personal life. Having less energy from work lowers our motivation to do things for ourselves which can ultimately affect our personal lives but work lives as well.

Unity and simmer.io - A match I wish I knew about a week ago.

After talking to a wall called itch.io, the last week with a support team that refused to even send a reply back, and spending more hours than I care to admit reading locked threads on the unity and itch forums... I went hunting for a webGL Unity solution that WASNT itch.io. WOW wow WOW, simmer.io was easy, had no upload size limit, works well in chrome. I will be using this platform going forward.

I hope this blog post helps someone in their next jam or endeavor, giving them an option to host online without being forced to use a site with an arbitary file size limit and a TERRIBLE support team.

So if you want to play our game on the web, head over to simmer(link below). Although changes weren't made to the project, this should not in any way be considered an offical entry (the resolution change on the webGL build increased the mouse sensitivity which people had issues with, and some of the glitch/post processing effects we used in our dream sequences did not translate into the webGL build). Please download the file from itch, linked on our ldjam.com page, if you plan on rating the game. Happy gamemaking party people!

Thanks to everyone who has rated our game and provided valuable feedback! We really appreciate each and every comment that is made, and we're grateful for the positive response  Roller Riches is an incremental game where your goal is to build a roller coaster that coaxes poor suckers (your guests) out of their money.

We're going to redesign and rebuild this game from the ground up as a side project, with a focus on adding more traditional incremental game mechanics (prestige, multiple currencies, an actual semblence of balance, etc). If you have any suggestions for how we could develop Roller Riches into a fuller incremental game, let us know!

Please feel free to post your game, and I will check it out! If you're interested and haven't given Roller Riches a try yet, check it out here. Thank you!
