Not Another Bad Theme Post

LD45_VotingRoundsComplete.png

I can honestly say I wasn't to disappointed in any of these themes. I don't have a damned clue what I will do for like 3/4th of them but they are not the worst jam theme's I have ever seen (that trophy goes to the global game jam theme of 2019 "What home means to you" a theme so esoteric that I'm pretty sure I had to write an essay about it in middle school.)

All 3 rounds of preliminary voting

Pretty alright themes overall. Excited for the final round. I have some bias towards my own theme (Fragile), but there's other great choices too!

Jumping in the deep end of the pool when you cant swim and you are hydrophobic.

After watching Pixel Prophecy's ludum dare videos almost to a religious degree, I finally decided to try it for myself. I started using Unity... 3 days ago, so have basically 0 Programming experience,- So am I completely in over my head?

Yes. Is this a great way to get yourself out of your comfort zone and learn some useful skills? Also Yes.

So even if I don't make anything resembling a game the things I learn on the way, will be more valuable then the product after-all.

Am hopefully in

I've been meaning to do Ludum Dare for a while now but haven't been able to. Now my schedule is pretty clear and I think I'll be able to participate in the compo (or jam, if I want).

I used to use a custom-built C engine but right now I don't have such a thing up and running. Luckily, however, I've become quite fond of Godot recently, and so I'll be using it for the competition (likely with a 2D game, but we'll see).

Other tools I could end up using include: - Aseprite - GIMP - Krita - Blender - Beepbox - LMMS - BFXR - Audacity

I've also recently been playing a much wider set of games, as I recently got a Switch. There are a few games I might try to base my entry off of a little bit, including Celeste, Enter the Gungeon, and Opus Magnum.

I also might try some new things with regards to asset creation. I usually do pixel art, but I might try hand-drawn (well, hand-drawn in Krita) animation. I also might try recording sound effects instead of doing them with BFXR (even though I don't have any professional audio recording equipement).

As far as themes go, I don't like a whole lot of them. I honestly can't even pick a favorite as none of them really stand out to me. Colonization and prisoner both leave a lot of space politically and thematically, and it would be interesting (and perhaps very revealing...) to see how the community acts on them.

Probably the best themes in the game-oriented category are "One rule" and "Side effects" as those leave a lot of interpretations both inside and outside of specific game mechanics. I don't think I prefer one over the other though.

Anyways, good luck to everybody. See ya for the competition. :v:

Good themes, but..

Sorry for asking but where the heck are floating islands or it's not a bug it's a feature ;_; Not that I would want those themes but they're legendary in LD theme votings.

Let's do this!

Hello, wonderful Ludum Dare community!

I am finally able to join my second Ludum Dare (my first one was 41) and I'm happy to do that. Since my last participation I was lucky enough to start working on games as my primary source of income, and also finally have a hobby project that looks worthy enough to be soon shared with the world. Ludum Dare and this community definitely deserves a thanks, as LD41 was happening during times when I was wondering if pursuing gamedev is something I would like. It turns out I love it

I wish you all the best of luck!

I'll be using the following stack:

  • Unity as engine
  • Rider as C# IDE
  • Vectary for 3D modelling if needed, I hope I won't need it
  • Photoshop for 2D graphics
  • Garage Band for music creation
  • Audacity for SFX creation

Getting Ready

Going through some of GDQuest's tutorials before the weekend to get an idea of how to use Godot. Starting to understand the structure of this program.

One thing I really need to learn is how to port my game correctly. I've read that Godot games can have problems playing in browser, but I really want to do that to make it easier to play. So I'm going to practice that before the weekend. I'd hate to finish a game and not submit the game on time. I know I will have an additional hour to submit, but I don't want to take that chance.

I have also learned a lot of what makes a good theme from reading some of the blog posts here, I'll keep them in mind if I do another game jam like this where I can suggest a theme.

Your preffered engine/framework poll still running

If you are curious as me which engine dominates in the LDjam, you can vote or watch results of poll :) https://www.strawpoll.me/18719806/r (thanks for your vote)

Just had a look at the office space for the upcoming LDJam... not good (-> TODO)

... but got the votings down so lets see where we land for the final round; I set a hard limit for 4 themes per round and here are my picks.

Themes.png

I think my top 5 favorites look something like this:

  1. Prisoner

  2. Factory

  3. Shelter

  4. Decay

  5. Night is coming

Funny thing about these - "exit polls" - the theme seem to never be the one that is actually "publicly votes the most".

Good luck to everyone

Getting ready for Ludum Dare 45 (I'm in!)

This will be my first time participating in this jam. Gotta say I'm pretty hyped! I think I can safely say the same goes for my team!

Tool Stack (speaking for myself)

  • Unity game engine
  • GraphicsGale or Asprite for pixel art
  • Blender or similar tool for 3D assets/animation
  • Visual Studio Code with Neovim integration for text editing
  • SunVox or LSDJ in SameBoy emulator for music
  • Audacity or bfxr for SFX

Quick little opinion on a round 3 theme

Just wanted to say real quick that I'd personally downvote the theme: "Games that shouldn't be in first person done in first person"

It basically takes the idea of doing any kind of 2D game out of the picture, making things harder for those of us with less experience with 3D, or using an engine that flat out doesn't support it.

It's a neat idea for a project. But as a game jam theme, I just don't think that it fits. Especially with the huge amount of people with varying skill levels, using a huge variety of tools.

One year later, I'm in for a second time !

The last time my friends and I brought this game : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/43/ld43-journey

I'll do my best with a totally new team this time :)

What I hope to do : - Game design - Graphism (Pixelart) - A bit of coding off course :p

What I'll use : - Unity - PyxelEdit - Some tool to help us on the way : Trello, MinMeister, GoogleDocs... - For sound : https://sfbgames.com/chiptone (Yes it's flash made... But awesome ! If anyone has a standalone version...)

I wish you all the best for this LudumDare45 !

First Ludum Dare

I will be joining this Ludum Dare, it's going to be my first one.

The entire team isn't qualified for this, but it'll be fun.

I wish everyone most luck this weekend, and make something great!

Edit: When I send this it was empty, hehe

My second Ludum Dare

This is the second time I'm participating. I wish everyone good luck :)

("Hello LDJAM!");

Hello fellow jammers! I've actually participated once several years ago but I was extremely new then (still am to be honest, but now I might actually make something).

I'll be using: Unity, PyxelEdit, Famitracker if I get around to music and sound effects.

I'm so excited to join even though I have a work shift on Saturday - Surely it's not going to be too much of an obstacle. See you all around! - MikaMakesGames

The story of how i make my coffee

How to Make Coffee What you'll need to brew coffee in a pot: It doesn't take much to brew perfect coffee; as a matter of fact, it only takes three things:

Filtered water: the fewer impurities in the water, the less competition for the true flavor of the coffee. Correct proportions: regardless of machine-type, use two tablespoons of grounds per eight ounces of water, and then adjust to your taste from there. The right grind: it differs by machine, but generally the more time coffee grounds spend in contact with water, the courser the grind--and vice versa. Learn more about how to grind coffee beans to match the kind of coffee you're making. Basic steps to make perfect coffee: Here are the basic steps to make coffee—assuming you're not making it with an automatic coffee machine (in which case, you'd follow manufacturers' guidelines):

Line the basket of your coffee maker with a filter. Grind coffee beans to medium or medium-fine grind size. Bring filtered water to a boil, then let it sit for a minute. Pour enough water into the filter to wet it completely, and let it drain into your cup or coffee pot. Discard the water. Measure the ground coffee into the wet filter. Pour in enough water to wet the ground beans and drain into your cup or coffee pot, then pour in the rest of the water.

Time to shill my Java game library

The new jam is coming up so it's the perfect opportunity plug my game library here. It's a Java library and based only on sowftware rendering but I found it to be perfect for my game jams. Check it out if you're a Java person!

I'm in for my first Ludum Dare

I'm really looking forward to participating in my first Ludum Dare

I will mostly be using Unity, GIMP, Ableton and SFMaker.

Good luck all!
