Ludum Dare 45 October 4–7, 2019

The Quest for an educational game

Hi Ludum Dare community! It's been a while since my last Ludum Dare and even longer since I have made a Ludum Dare game that I was proud of.

Since my last "successful" ludum dare game, I've completed undergrad, started my first full time developer job, published my first conference paper, and got to be help design and develop a real educational game with real life graduate students and did a real life study with real data that we analyzed and really presented about.

Looking back (and looking forward) I feel like my older games were kinda ... bad. I don't know how to make an open source project sustainable and I lost drive for working on it, so the educational game also kinda pittered out once we not longer could devote all our time to it. While I have gained experience in the world of both development and academic stuff, none of it matters unless I actually sit down and MAKE something useful.

After being exposed to the fancy academic world with conference names like ""FDG"", ""ICCE"", and ""SIGCSE"" and statistics about the state of CS education in United States, I would like to approach this Ludum Dare with the goal of making an educational game that could be used as a resource in learning something with Math or CS.

I want academia to be somewhere in my future, and I usually learn the most in the shortest amount of time doing game jams like Ludum Dare - so why not use this Ludum Dare to work on an educational game? My goals for myself include:

  1. Have the game be a potential resource to teach SOMETHING with CS/Math
  2. Have at least 1 paper I can point to to show the design as SOME basis in theory
  3. The game should be fun (or at least not-dreadful) to play

I look forward to using this weekend to learn more about educational/serious gaming!

TLDR; I'm in

I'm diving in!

This will be my first Ludum dare, I'm hoping that this theme will be a good one.

Anyways here's what I'll be using:

  • Unity
  • Paint.net
  • Bosca Ceoil
  • Audacity

I wish everyone good luck :)

Final Round

Fragile didn't make it in, but I'm pretty content with what did make it through.

Microchasm Games

It's been a few years, we are excited to attempt another LD! We aren't sure what tools we will use this time. Its going to have to be something simple, maybe Pico-8?

Red Owl Games is in!

Heya, It's Rocktavious and Emmyoop of Red Owl Games here!

Wow I cannot believe how fast the time flew by and now LD45 is upon us. Red Owl Games is back again for our 5th LD and we hope to make it another successful one!

Here is our latest blog post - https://redowlgames.com/blog/ld45

To celebrate the new LD font mike has made (https://github.com/mikekasprzak/font-ludum-dairy) we've made a splash logo for you all to use in your games this LD!

I hope everyone has fun and I look forward to all the amazing work! Good Luck!

What better way to finish out voting on a theme for a Latin named game jam then to quote the most famous of all the Romans.

I am very excited I am planning on trying to stream some of my Jam on twitch.tv/TheseusInABottle . I still have some stuff to setup, but I should be all ready by Friday. I guess all that is left for me to do is to list my tools and remind everyone to vote factory.

Tools:

  • Unity 2019.2 for the Engine
  • Blender for 3D art
  • Krita and\or Paint.net for 2D art
  • Audacity for Audio\SFX
  • Bosca Ceoil and\or Sunvox for Music\SFX
  • Open Broadcast Software (OBS) for live streaming
  • Chronolpase for a Timelapse
  • Fontstruct.com for custom font

Just as a quick addendum to my tool list I plan to use FontStruct as a tool to make a custom font not to download a premade font. That being said I'm pretty sure premade fonts are counted as an exception even in the Compo so long as you are in your rights to use it. So if you are in dire need of a font or have a perfect idea for your game and want to make a matching font I recommend it as a tool its pretty simple to use.

Also final reminded to vote for Factory because its the best theme!

I'm in.. for the First time.

This is my first time.

I have little experience in game development but I will try my best.

I am ready to have fun and do crazy things!

I wish everyone have fun Ludum Dare!!!

I was told that something needs to be written)
I am writing xD
This is my first experience of such events, I think it will be cool.

I read the posts of other participants, if it is important, we will use Unity for development and we will be two.

I'm in

Second go at a Ludum Dare, unfortunately I didn't finish last time. However this time around I am determined to keep a tight timeline and actually finish it this time.

In for the 5th time!

Ready as I can be, joining the compo this time:

Here's my expected stack: - Visual Studio Code - Gine (Typescript/HTML engine, https://github.com/bjeaurn/gine) - Aseprite - Possibly Audacity if I go for some audio - More as I go...

Also a friendly reminder that 48h of competitive coding is quite stressful on the body, so instead of (just) loading up on chips and other quick snacks, so here's my "healthy" snack stack: - Mixed nuts - Bell peppers / Cucumber / Carrots / Tomatoes - Peanutbutter & Apples - Grapes, kiwi/pears/oranges (not sure which ones yet) - Going to try making some kale chips - Olives

And of course I'll top it off with some less healthy snacks ;-).

See you on the Twitches and Twitters!

Can't wait!

I'm in for LD jam 45. I am so exicted, friday please come earlier! But seriously I'm coutning on evolve theme or night is coming. I have some ideas how to deal with them so wish me luck!

hi all I'm on the way for the game dev dare

yea, traveling now pretty much on the way, will i reach on time before the final theme announced? hmm..

Tools : - Game engine : Unity vs Phaser - Art: Paint.net + Gimp + Blender - Audio : Audacity + LMMS - Updates at: paruthilabs, Twitter

Always i choose to learn some thing and do that in the game..

:sparkles: :sparkles: :sparkles:Cheers for everyone :sparkles: :sparkles: :sparkles:

Question about the End Game (No not that one)

What really happends and what should you do at the end of the jam?

Do you submit before the timer ends or is there like a "submission period"? Do you add screenshots / Gameplay GIFS / descriptions before or after the submission period and does that affect ratings, as In people will play games right away after the jam ends and if your game page is blank with only name and DL link no one will pay attention to it? When CAN you actually play the entries? When you use 3rd party models & Audio the rules ask you to "opt out" of the respective categories, where and when can one do that?

What kind of service do people use to provide their games the most effective way? Just a google drive file or browser based?

Should you play games from genre's you dont like/dont know much about? Like only very few platforming games actually interested me over the years, so I haven't played many of them.

So Should I:

Not play and review any of them. Play them Judge them How I truly feel. Play them and Judge on how "I think" someone who really knows alot about platforming would judge it. Play them and only leave a comment, leaving the ratings alone(If that's even a thing). Or is there some kind of magic 5th way you can think of?

Just making sure I don't do anything wrong :) Also sorry for the formatting apparently it doesn't want to work as it does in the actual editor.

Godot or Unity?

I'm In!

Haven't tried either for more than a day and will learn one, I suppose it will depend on my game idea.

I'm in.

For the fourth time I'm in. As I always say, maybe I will finish the game this time. Using GMS2, Aseprite and Paint.NET, Audacity and LMMS. Have fun everyone.
