Ludum Dare 37 December 9–12, 2016

Progress

It is midnight here,  5 hours in and start was a little slow. The first hour nattowed down ideas and started working. Second hour spent an hour debating with teamabout the pros and cons of keyboard controls vs poit and click while working on a bug in the engine.  Since then some placeholder graphics and no more bugs. a few more hours of coding and hopefully that can be (mostly) wrapped up and the bulk of tomorrow will be graphics.  Still a little concerned with the encounter/fighting mechanics.

When you decide on an idea pretty quick

but then forget to have any artistic cohesion.

day1

I probably should’ve gotten back to coding a few hours ago.

All in all a good start for day 1.

Time to study.

Solid Idea

One room huh? Well after about 20 min brainstorming I came up with what I hope is a good idea. I decided not to do a room escape game (although I really wanted to) due to way to much programming, puzzle design, and graphics. I also considered a FPS in which you are a toy soldier in a kid’s room. It might of been interesting but I couldn’t think of a way to make it work. Instead I’m going with a first person parkour speed running game… except
you can only see part of the level (to keep with the one room theme). We’ll see how it works with my limited time schedule. I’ll keep you updated! Now to go get some sleep before loading up some dubstep and getting coffee tomorrow!

ARGhhghghh (Almost done a really ugly, working prototype)

So, I basically have a working game at this point (almost)?

This is definitely the most like, game logic I have done for LD game so far. It really doesn’t look like much, but I’d like to have most of the basic gameplay done before I move onto art and assets.

I’m going to make a to-do list for tomorrow, then go to sleep. Goodnight, LDers.

And… where to start?

Somewhat late to ludum dare, but still early here (8 am) 😀 Let’s do this!

Since I was all excited about the Ludum Dare, my husband joined in and we’re now doing a team project!
Not really much to tell there since we’re both kind of generalists (or noobs, depending on the viewpoint), but Caellon will probably stick more to the programming part and I will do the art stuff.

The idea is not totally fleshed out yet, but the keynote is an arena setting in comic like 3D graphics, simple enough art style and mechanics so we can get this done.

Now to decide how to make full use of that “One Room” theme apart from, well, having one room. 😉

Intro Art

I’ve gotten some character portraits done fairly quickly. I’m just grabbing Creative Commons art and pixelating it.

Here’s Crazy Lady and Suspicious General:

Turn back while you still can!

Maybe you could also use indexed colors, to make them less “blurry” :)

Thank you, great advice!

Oh well

So One Room it is eh?

I threw some ideas out the window and returned to my initial one which is not too creative but I felt most at home with it. It’s Escape Room meets Mega Man where you have to fight different bosses to get their abilities and the main hub of the game is a single room that gets transformed to accommodate each of the Boss’s traits. You can only escape after you defeated all the bosses.

This seems pretty ambitious, and I’m going for the Compo, so wish me luck.

We started!

2D-one-room-slasher!

LD37 Progress

My game is going pretty good so far I’ve gotten over some major hurdles and stumbling blocks that I had before the jam, and now should be ready to move forward. Tomorrow I’ll finish up the player controls, make some more entities, and start on assets; may take awhile but should be pretty straight forward.

Code: Python and pygame library, built on a previous game I tried making

Tonights progress: made game, entity, scene, and player classes, implemented ‘sprite’ drawing/rendering, split program into separae files

Game Idea:

Locked in a bedroom during night

dream ‘monsters’ appear as player enters the bed and falls asleep

defeating a monster moves on to next stage

pretty simple but I should be able to handle it.

note: will try to post pictures and art later

End of Day 1

Tomorrow’s going to be one busy day. (: but we have lots of scene objects, a strong start on our soundtrack, and lots of code!

Why do you need a Pixel 😉

Starting development

I just came up with a decent idea, it’s time to turn it into a game!

A room appears!

It feels EXTREMELY weird for me to start with artwork before doing anything else.  On the plus side, it’s not looking half bad!

Our 3rd Dare Together, and we are ready to ROCK!

After plugging away at idea after idea we have finally come to a decision! I can honestly say that I don’t think anyone else will have an idea quite like this one this dare. I am excited for everyone to play and enjoy it. The idea is clean, the idea is simple. It consists of:

  • Prototype and Beer on Saturday
  • Balance, Art, and Beer on Sunday
  • Playtest, Refine, Nitpick, Submit and Beer on Monday
This is going to be fun! We will see you all at the finish line! Cheers, -Dynamic Panic Studios

Update#2–WEEKEND DAD

The dad we all know and love.

The dad we all know and love.

Here’s the only worthy render I have as of now. It’s the main character “Weekend Dad”. He’s not a Regular Dad, He’s a Weekend Dad.

More to come on “Weekend Dad” tomorrow 😀

Good night everyone!

What’s the point of having a room if you can’t run up its’ walls?
