LD22 December 16–19, 2011

I’m probably in.

Hi.

This will be my first LD. Hope I won’t disappoint.
Been a developer for ages. This will be my entry into gaming.

Lang: C++.
GFX/Sound: OpenGL/SDL.

Extra: Photoshop, CorelDraw,  maybe Frutyloops.

I’m *probably* in…

Still on the fence here, as I’ve been crunching for a few weeks, currently have a splitting headache, and could use a few days off instead. But…

OTOH, the Kobo II Tech Preview is now on-line, which means that I have a working Win32 executive, making deployment trivial. (There is no game code in kobo2.exe, only EEL with SDL, OpenGL, ChipSound, physics etc.) So, I should be able to pull this off without touching glorified assembly languages, or even running a native compiler. 😉 (Well, I might rebuild the executive with a different icon. That should be safe. I think…)

So, if I do it, here are my weapons of choice:

Language: EEL (Runs on the Kobo II executive.)
Editor: KDE Kate
Libraries: Kobo II/EELBox executive (SDL, OpenGL, ZeeSpace, ChipSound, …)
Sounds: ChipSound
Music: ChipSound
Graphics: GIMP, ZeeSpace

Tags: ChipSound, EEL, GIMP, Kobo II, linux, opengl, SDL, Windows, ZeeSpace

My starting code library

I understand from the rules that you can start out with some personal code libraries as long as you make them freely available before the event.

I make own starting kit available here which contains a basic HTML5 game setup with canvas, game loop, sound/image loaders and other utility code for math etc. The starting kit also contains some Java code for creating a custom grid-based level editor with several layers and properties that can save levels in both XML and JSON. It doesn’t support properties yet but I might add that during LD22. There is also an Ant distribution script that concats all the code and minifies it.

Bye!

I’m/We’re in

I’m planning to join in the fun for LD22, either myself or with my partner in crime, Physmo Tone, in which case we’ll be doing the Jam thing.

Graphics will be done in Photoshop, code will be either Java or C++. (Or unity or javascript. Man, we need to plan this better 😀 ).  Sound will be SFXR (surprise!) or some free thing that can generate sounds (audacity maybe?).

We’ll do regular updates through development and hope to have something at least playable. Good luck all!

I will partecipate!

Language: Java

IDE: Eclipse

Libraries: Swing/AWT or maybe Slick2D

Sound: Audacity, sfxr

Graphics: Photoshop

In it not to win it!

I’m entering for the first time, so I’m basicaly a LD virgin.
Anyway I don’t think it will hurt, but it will probably be a bit awkward…

Programming: AS3 ( FlashBuilder )
Library: Flixel
Graphics: Photoshop
Music: Nanoloop ( iPhone )

Warmup Weekend – Ludum Dare 22

Surprise! Warmup Weekend!

Teacher just walked in, said good morning, and started handing out a pop quiz. You panic. You start regretting that you stayed up late playing games. The exam is next week, and admittedly, you’re not ready for either.

Warming-up for Ludum Dare is nothing new, but here’s us encouraging you to do it.

Between now and Ludum Dare 22’s start time, you should really make sure that your tools work. Make some art, import it, and draw it on screen. Make some sounds, import them, and play them on cue. If you’re using a new development tool, learn it.

Mr McFunkyPants proved it. Look at his top-3 “what went wrong”. If you’ll indulge me, you could attribute all 3 to poor preparation. Or to keep up the schooling angle “You didn’t study!”.

Bullet point summary:

  • No rules or limits. This is practice.
  • Learn your development tools! Write some code, run it.
  • Make some art, get it on screen, make it move.
  • Print some text to the screen. Print some text to a log (if applicable).
  • Make some sound, get it in game, make it play.
  • If you’re motivated enough, make your experiments in to a game!
  • Make something that should take “hours”, not 2 days.
  • Then package it up, put it online.
  • No time or day limit. But if you have no other plans this weekend, why not?
  • If you’d like to work with a theme, try this tool

If you like what you’ve done, feel free to share it.

Don’t worry, the quiz wont affect your grade. But be warned, the exam is all-or-nothing.

I’m in

Hi all, I’ve decided to enter my first ever LD and hoping to have a good experience at the very least.

Language: C#
Libraries: XNA Framework 4
Sounds and Music: Audacity
Graphics: Paint.Net

As it’s my first time, not sure what I’m exactly going to do, very much seat of the pants operation here. Anyone interested, feel free to follow me on twitter.

Practicing my programskills because I’m in!

I’m in.

I’m going to practice my programmingskills with Game Maker, until Ludum Dare starts. I just noticed that even a simple platformer engine can be difficult (well, at least for me :P).

I can’t wait till next week, Ludum Dare 22 is going to be awesome (as long as the theme isn’t Cats).

Good luck everyone 😀

I’m in :D

I’m new to LD and faairly new to programming for games, although I do have past coding experience. I’ve never finished any game projects completely (lost one on a pen drive once…), but I work best under deadlines, so hopefully LD will be a kick up the ass to get something done ;D  I should hopefully be doing this compo, unless family stuff/revision gets in the way.

I’ll be using:

  • Gimp for graphics;
  • bfxr for sound (and maybe Wolfram Tones or whatever it’s called for music);
  • Unity or Stencyl for coding and project management, depending on the theme and thus the content my entry requires.

Already got some ideas up my sleeve: hopefully I can adapt them to the theme 😉

Have you managed to actually find a way to export generated Wolfram Tones?..

Hm, having just re-checked out Wolfram Tones, it does appear a little crappier than I thought, and there appears to be no way of exporting the “music”… I swear there used to be.

I’ll be there <3

Following an enjoyable LD #21 I will be entering once again, but for the first time I will leave Flixel/Flash by the wayside and attempt to make something of value in Unity! This may or may not happen but at the least it’ll be a damn good learning experience, I reckon.

So I will be using Unity, perhaps with a bit of Blender, plus my other usual favoured tools: GIMP, FL Studio and bfxr.

Bring it on :)

I am in!

Well, this will be my first LD. Meant to jump in on the last one but totally forgot.

I’ll be (probably) using:
Game Maker HTML5 for the game
GIMP
 for graphics
Audacity for sounds

Participating in LD22

I’m going to be participating in the LD #22 Compo using the following code libraries:

  • bss_util – Utilities library with various high performance structures.
  • TinyOAL – Simple, easy to use sound library.
  • PlaneShader – 2D graphics engine
  • TeV Engine – 2D Game Engine using PlaneShader, TinyOAL and Box2D

Builds of PlaneShader and TeV Engine are available upon request. However, TeV Engine is still unstable and in development so it’s likely to be of limited use.

We’re in.

First time, web nerd pretty new to game programming.

Probably churn some web game out using html5/canvas/javascript :)

More posts coming as the time gets near!

– Team Burly Dudes

We’ll be jamming

First time participating in Ludum Dare, will be doing it as a family (dad and two kids, ages 15 and 11). I’ll be doing most of the programming, kids will do art, music, some programming.

Language: Javascript, HTML, CSS

Graphics: Pixelmator, Blender

Looking forward to it, kids will just be out of school and they’re both very excited.

That’s awesome! Looking forward to see the result! Have fun you three! :)

First timer is ‘hopefully’ in…

I say hopeful, because I still have to run the disappearance of a weekend by the wife!

Here’s what I’m thinking I’ll use:

  • “Engine” – Unity3D. Targeting the Web Player.
  • 2D Art – Good old Paint Shop Pro 7, for UI things.
  • 3D Art – Google Sketchup. Keeping it simple, I’d imagine I’ll just use simple coloured primitives, no texturing.
  • Audio – Unsure of this, I’ll have to wing it.
C++ is my usual choice for game development, but I wanted to try something different. Only tinkered with Unity samples so far, so will be a bit of a baptism of fire attempting to complete a whole game. :)

I’m in!

3rd year CS student in Glasgow, Scotland.

Once made a game about a panda trying to kill medusa, but it wasn’t very good.

Been coding a game in Python for a team project in university this year, so going back to Java will be a relief.

I’m not promising anything great, but it should at least be weird.

Language: Java

IDE: Eclipse

Libraries: Slick2D (probably)

Content Generation: Pixelmator + graphics tablet

Oh wow, it’s been three months already?

Oh, well, time’s been flying by lately. It’s insane.

Anyway, I’ll be taking part in LD 22, probably not going to finish, I have a concert on the 17th, and school on the 19th. Yay.

Going to be using C++ with the SDL library, Famitracker for sound/music, and GraphicsGale mostly for art.

Change of plans

I’ve decided to go from participating in the competition to participating in the jam, but doing it solo. I’ve heard that the competition is very difficult and I don’t think that 2 days is a reasonable timeframe to complete art creation, seeing as each one can take a couple of hours on most of my projects. Will probably post a timelapse for the 72 hours when it comes.
