LD22 December 16–19, 2011

I’m in

For the first time ever, I’m going to participate in a competition, without being sure if I have the time or imagination!

Since it’s solo it’s pretty risky, I am a terrible drawer, music and sound maker, but I love to try.

I already use gamemaker for 3-4 years, so I will be using that, hoping that I can make the next Ludum Dare game with Flash, which I’m currently learning.

Hopefully I can produce something average and have a great birthday on the 19th!

Good luck everyone!

Warmup snapshot #2

Oh dear! I am falling behind my schedule. However, I do have working player movement, at the moment.

I guess that is something! You can click on the image to try it out.

Warmup game progress

The LD22 warmup theme suggester gave me the theme ‘Trust’, so as my warmup game I decided to make a simple top-down perspective shooter.

Your goal in the game is to escape, but there are multiple paths to choose from, and with your limited ammunition you better choose the safest path possible! Luckily there are plenty of NPC’s around to tell you which way to go, but some of them might just want to loot your corpse once the evil green things(w.i.p) have done short work of you with overwhelming numbers. You have to place your trust in the least suspicious sounding NPC.

Or something like that anyway(it’s a warm up game, cut me some slack >.>”).

So here’s a progress shot!

Action!

Going to sleep now, I’ll have something playable out soon!

Broken Warmup game

I tried to make a game for the warmup round, but because of too many bugs, I wasn’t able to finish the game. Hopefully this won’t happen in the real Ludum Dare Compo.

Joining

Is this a competition for writing? Or the actual physical creation of the game. Please feel free to email me at treekoid@yahoo.com on the answer.

I’m in, goal: submit a game

My goal for the LD is the same as last time: submit a game. Last time I succeeded and I hope to again. I want to create an action game this time and focus on perfecting a small amount of content.

  • Language: C# (Unity 3D, MonoDevelop)
  • Libraries: Orthello, iTween
  • Graphics: Pixen, TexturePacker, possibly Blender and Photoshop
  • Audio: Microphone (Not going to rely on sfxr this time!), Audacity
If you are thinking of using Orthello, this tutorial might help.

Warm-up progress so far

I didn’t get started until about 18:00 today, so it doesn’t upset me too much that I haven’t gotten as far as I’d like.

I didn’t bother with a theme, other than “draw the first thing that comes to mind and build a game with it”, I drew a jumbo jet so I decided to fly with it.

This is written with vanilla HTML5 Canvas and Javascript, although I’m building up some common libs that I’ll release as OSS next week and probably consume in the actual challenge if nobody minds too much.

The aim of this game is to fly the aircraft around using the mouse (or touch I guess), it has some vague physics (so stalling when you get high etc) and collect the stars while avoiding the pigeons.

Well that’s the plan anyway, it’s 2AM and the physics are ropy and I’m not yet collecting any stars and there are no pigeons. I feel I should throw all the game mechanics in and deal with polishing the physics and graphics tomorrow. I’ve learned a few things with this exercise already that I’ll be using in the real deal next weekend – chiefly:

  • Get all the game-play in by the end of Saturday night
  • Spend Sunday polishing
  • Don’t spend Friday and Saturday polishing
  • Buy food before beginning, and get some sleep the week before – not starting until 18:00 will be dumb 😉
Hopefully reporting in tomorrow with a complete game, hopefully.

Ludum Dare Warmup! *Progress Report!*

I’m making a game this weekend for the Warm up before Ludum Dare 22!
I’m using Unity and C# and photoshop for graphics. The game is kind of a mystery game. You have to escape your confined area by doing puzzles. Here’s my current progress and a few screenshots!

+ Movement with WASD and look using the arrow keys. DONE!
+ Picking up physical objects DONE!
+ Doors and opening them. DONE!
– Weight sensor activators (not done)
– Signs for communicating with the player (not done)
– Other puzzles (no idea yet)

Warm-up Progress – Journey to the bottom of the sea

I used the theme generator and got “Journey to the bottom of the sea”.

Well so far, I’ve got just that.

There is a sea, which is sea-like (layered water sprites with sine movement), a bottom to sea and a submarine that journeys there. Also some quite useless fish! It takes just over one minute to get to the bottom.

What’s missing? Actual gameplay.

I’ve yet to decide what the goal is (besides getting to the bottom, obviously) and what obstacles will be presented in achieving said goal.

Livestreaming Warmup Game

Hey dudes!
I forgot to say in my previous post that I’m live streaming my warmup game dev to gear up for next weekend! Watch me over at http://justin.tv/danlthemanl tonight and most of Sunday.

My ‘official’ “I’m in!” post

I made an “I’m in!” video a couple weeks ago, but I figured with 6 days left, I should probably make a post as well.

  • I’ll be using Flash, FlashPunk, and FlashDevelop for the actual coding.

(I will also use some of my own pre-made functions for FlashPunk: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/27464471/JacicCommon.as

It’s really only one (working) function right now, which may or may not have been done previously in FP. Feel free to use it.)

  • GIMP and Graphics Gale for the ‘art’.
  • Possibly sfxr for the music/blips.
  • And of course, caffeine for the energy!

I’ll also be doing the warmup. My idea is a game in which the player moves bits (1’s and 0’s) into order to form a byte of a specified value.

Good luck and have fun everyone!

I’m in

My first and really looking forward to it.

*insert bitching about game maker here*

Warmup… Nearly…. Done. And so am I.

Well, the warmup is nearly done.

Everything on my todo list is done save:

  • Win game dialog.
  • Title screen.
  • Auto-save/load game.
  • Sound effects of any kind. :)
  • Levels 2-10
  • And the intro story!
As before, you can click on the image to give it a shot.  The game stops working, technically, once you beat level one.

I’m in (most likely) !

Had such a blast last time, which was my first LD that I’ll participate again (as long as my schedule allows me to, which it should).

My last entry did surprisingly well, taken it was my first time, but due to hectic times at work (we just released new game this Wednesday) I haven’t been able to finish the post-compo version (but its still coming and is actually progressing somewhat steadily, even if slowly… very very slowly!).

I will likely use C++/SDL/OpenGL again, even though I kind of promised myself that I’d use some other language (with GC(!)), but really don’t want to move too far out of my comfort zone while having such limited time. BlitzMax will be my backup tool if I happen to go nerd-rage over silly memory management issues again.

For “art” its the usual GIMP, TuxGuitar and SFXR.

I will probably end up using the same glitchy “framework” I used last time which I wrote a while back Link but I’ll try to get something more usable ready by the next weekend.

Edit: Given my recent drooling over oldskool games I might be using my “retro framework” which i unfourtanetly was unable to finish before LD, but guess its a good way to “beta” test it :). Source available in here

I’m in!

This is my first ludum dare contest! I’m excited! I will be using Actionscript 3 and Flash to make my game. Graphics will be horrible and sound will be from a sound generator.
