LD22 December 16–19, 2011

My warmup game refused to work…

Really, it did. It’s actually pretty close to playable, if you don’t mind losing even when you obviously won. I’ll try to finish it sometime, because I thought it had a great idea, but for now, I’m just thankful for the little bit of practice before the real compo.

New Guy is in… maybe.

Well, I have just recently come across this place and I must say I am intrigued. I think I might give this a shot, but given my work schedule this weekend and other important things, I may just end up spectating. I can take comfort in the fact that these are somewhat frequent!

I’m in, of course :)

That time of year has came around once again, where I have an excuse to lock myself in my bedroom, and do nothing but code, eat, and make “art”! I was planning on using C# this time round (https://github.com/neilogd/PsybrusSharp being the WIP C# port of my engine), but since I am lacking time with Christmas being around the corner, and less than a week till LD I’ll be sticking with my C++ engine, Psybrus (https://github.com/neilogd/Psybrus). However the game will be written in all C++ this time, as since last LD I’ve stripped the GameMonkey support from my engine. Back to basics for me! I’ve got my Windows development machine setup for testing my own, and rating other entries too, instead of relying on my VM.

Tools I will probably be using:

– Visual Studio 2008 & Xcode 4 for codes.
– Sublime Text 2 for general text editery.
–  The GIMP & Blender for artistry.
– Renoise, Audacity & bfxr for soundness.
– Screen Ninja for timelapsing (if it doesn’t decide to crash this time).

Really looking forward to the weekend, and best of luck to all!

Warm up Game Kitten and Butterfly

This year I will be participating in the Jam with some people I met through the San Diego Game Developers’ meetup.com. The team name is DormouseDevelopment.

As a warmup I made a little game about kittens and butterflies. It is a 2.5D platform jumper that uses both sprite animation, and 3d animation.

Smooth movement and neat animation! One thing though, I didn’t manage to kill any “Flutterby-Butterfly” :(!

Why would the kitten want to kill the Butterflies? Can’t we make games that don’t involve violence? Can’t a programmer be lazy and not implement a death state for the only NPC in the game.

I’m in!

Work? It’ll have to wait ( if possible :S )! For too long I skipped ld48 editions, and it’s time to rectify this.

Here are just a few of the things that will keep me going:

  • Code: Html5 canvas – Javascript – css.
  • Libraries: Microphysics.js for all the physics.
  • Sound: bfxr/sfxr for all the amazing sounds.
  • Design: Photoshop, Pixel Blender for the pixelation.
  • Music: Perhaps FL studio demo, if I make music.
  • Snacks: 5 boxes of jaffa cakes,  2 boxes of buttercrisps, pindanuts, pistachios
  • Drinks: Beer, coffee, soda.
  • Food: Takeaways.
I’ll probably be livestreaming during the entire workflow, I’ll be timelapsing for sure. Can’t wait for the spirit of it all! May you all be successful.

LD22 Prep

To be as ready as possible for this weekends LD, I’ll be kicking the tyres of my whole development process (as much as I can anticipate at least) So I thought I’d share my todo list of what I’ll be making sure works and also some stuff I’ll be learning about before the comp. Much better to do this BEFORE the day. Of course it’s a great idea to try making a quick game as preperation, but this list might help if you aren’t going to do that.

Tools.
Check coding tools are set up, and you can import any libraries you intend to use. I’ll be using Slick 2D library with eclipse so I’ll be making sure eclipse keyboard shortcuts are set up like Visual studio (which I am more used to).
Check audio tools and make sure you can load and use output formats.
Check art tools are usable, especially stuff like sprite transparencies, animation, file formats etc.
If you might use a pre-made one, know how to use your level editor and be able to read in the map files.

Input/Output; Test and get familiar with:
Loading/displaying images.
Loading/displaying fonts.
keyboard and mouse input.
loading and playing sounds.

Platforms:
Try making an executable and be sure it runs on all intended platforms like PC, Mac, Unix.  If making a browser game, check that what you are trying to do will run in most popular browsers.

Algorithmic stuff:
Know how to use common structures in the language: lists, maps, arrays etc.
Be familiar with basic game algorithms: collision, movement, velocities, game states and transitions, sorting algorithms, calculating a velocity from an angle, calc angle between two vectors etc.

Misc:
Check your screenshot/video recording tools if you plan to use them.

Anything I’ve missed? Good luck ! 😀

Jammed

For my game jam, worked on some algorithms for rounded terrain and built  a simple demo using websockets to coordinate between multiple players. No actual gameplay, just moving squares around from multiple browsers, but the code is here if it would help anyone: https://github.com/dethe/Websocket-Demo.

Hmm… Ninja parallel dimension warmup failed to launch…

As you can see from the title, my particular warmup theme was “parallel dimension”. So naturally, I came up with a crazy idea of using ninja smilies as a character and plotline. Essentially the idea was that your ninja master found a way into the shadow dimension of demons — unfortunately, he was captured, demons invaded your dojo, ghoulified some of your comrades, and have generally taken over. The idea was to have it as a kind of sneak and kill game, with you only killing the demons and saving your comrades. I was hoping to put something in there that allowed you to solve puzzles by swapping between the planes, but decided to keep it simple stupid for the first time around.

Well, I got close to something working — and then I got stuck. Apparently getting at the actual indexes of a BufferedImage‘s pixels is a serious PITA with Java2D. You can’t just use BufferedImage#getRGB(int x, int y) because it tries to return the actual RGB values. Worse, those values are packed RGB int values which are useless for indexing into an array of tiles and doubly useless for an efficient hashmap of colors to tiles because of autoboxing.

Dumb, dumb and dumb.

So looks like I get to assemble a small suite of utility classes and such to ease this pain a bit for the next time around. One of which is an int to E hashmap. The next is a stupidly simple GameMap class that does all the goo necessary to get an actual list of tile indexes from a bitmapped map. Sound a bit like reinventing the wheel? Probably, but I’m having fun with it, so nyah!

Also, I learned that the OpenJDK’s JVM does some very weird tricks with regard to “shared memory”. During this session of coding and getting stuck, I had a timelapse script running taking snapshots of the desktop every second, as well as webcam shots every five seconds. Unfortunately, that process managed to fill the entire root partition of my Linux install. Weirdly, the JVM started complaining about being out of shared memory space in /tmp. /tmp! Apparently something in there uses /tmp as a “shared memory space”, and when that’s filled up, things like ImageIO.read(URL url) start returning null. Once I cleaned up the droppings from my timelapse script, everything started working.

Weeeeird.

Oh, and the timelapse video is here. No actual game to post, though — never made it out of the “draw the ninja” prototype.

I’m in

Well, after seeing that Notch can make a game in 72 hours, I decided that the Ludlum Dare Jam would be a good start before the Christmas season.

In short,  I am known for making some simple mods/plug-ins for Bukkit and want to see if I can program a simple game in 72 hours.

So, here goes nothing:

I am in for the Ludlum Dare Jam

Done a warmup game, ready for the real thing! :D

The game is called "DogFight", it has dogs, fighting, with guns!

Links: ~ Game download page ~ Gameplay video on youtube ~

I got bored yesterday replying to a bunch of emails, so I made this warmup game. warmup postmortem: sphere colliders are better than capsule colliders for some stuff, capsule colliders don’t like to be rotated. also, it’s hard to aim in this game.

So, I’m totally down for LD this weekend. and not only am I down, I’m setting my sights on overall 1st place. you want that title, you have to beat me to it! 😀

Looking forward to this weekend, I expect this LD to be much fun! also, I’ll totally be at the CB2 meetup!

Warmup weekend in a hackerspace: 8 games :D

We had our own little game jam planned for weeks and what a nice coincidence that the warmup weekend happend. About 15 people turned up at metalab our hackerspace in Vienna and we created 8 games, most solo but also teams of three. We chose our common theme on Friday evening, occupy was the lucky winner and the contestants got busy right away. The outcome couldn’t be more colourful in gameplay, controls and programming languages used. As we keep the presentation local we barely upload games to the webs but even better, we upload the source so check that out too. https://metalab.at/wiki/Super_Gamedev_Weekend

I’m in!

This will be my second attempt in LD.

Last time I found out just how hard it is to make a game in 48 hrs. I learned a lot though, and I’ve been making a lot of simple stuff since then. Hopefully I can complete a game this time!

Language: Java
IDE: Eclipse
Libraries: jMonkeyEngine or Slick or just plain Java depending on the theme.

In Out Shake it all about!

I’d like to be in, but not sure I will so I could be out.

Not sure which engine, might use Torque3D, or my own (either my C++ or Haxe one) if I go Jam or might just go from scratch.

So erm, possible the most rubbish I’m In blog post EVAR!.

NEWBIE ALERT

Yeah, I’m gonna have a crack at it.

Poison of choice: VS2010/XNA4

Should be fun, but I’m going to suck on resources xD

I’ll be doing Comp unless something pops up to make me go Jam. Although I was considering doing a hybrid: submit a Comp, then spend the next day doing Jam level stuff. Is that allowed?

First LD

This is my first ever LD, though I’ve done other competitions before, including a 24 hour game jam at my school. I’m excited to start and looking forward to seeing what everyone else is able to do in such a short time span.

Good luck and Have fun to all contestants!

Allowed to buy content?

There are countless royaltee-free music/sound websites out there where you can fork out a couple bucks for a nice soundtrack.  Is this something that’s allowed in LD to spice up our games a bit?

Ludum Dare 22 – Nogbog in.

“I’m in” video saved, cat got in the way, all good.

I’ll be using HTML5/Javascript/Canvas. Using Chrome, may have to install Firefox and IE to check compatibility.

Also it just occurred to me that my WordPress name and my handle are not the same.

I am nogbog aka Colin Capurso

I’m in!

I just realised I hadn’t actually committed to LD22 yet, consider that rectified.

This will be my second LD48, I did a platform game last time, it turned out ok, but I spent far too long fussing over the graphics and nowhere near long enough getting content in. Hopefully with that lesson in mind this weekend I can come away with something much more complete.

As usual I will be using HTML5 Canvas / Javascript (all my own libraries / classes) and Photoshop for graphics.

I am super excited this time, i’ve made sure the entire weekend is cleared of any commitments, the cupboards are stocked with programming fuel, and everything on my computer is organised and ready to go, it’s the most organised i’ve been in years :)

Jam partner find

Demon Owl

After having failed consistently with my 48 hr entries, I think I’d like to try my luck at the Jam, taking the role as gfx/art guy. My art can be seen on androidarts.com. Drop a comment below if you’re interested in writing that text that make things go. Things that are not broken. If you are smart, we can be strong!

Eherm. As a side note, I thought it would be fun if LD had some sort of mascot, so I drew a bunch of proposals. Not sure what to think of them though.
