About msleeper

I’m msleeper and I’m an independent game developer / programmer from Atlanta, GA. My weapon of choice as of this post is Unity3D, an amazing free 3D engine. I am tentantively planning on participating in LD 22, mostly depending on what the theme is going to be and if no other obligations crop up between now and then.

You can play a (very old) game demo I made in Unity here. You can read more about myself and my past projects on my website, I’ve recently been putting up some videos of old work of mine. Looking forward to the weekend!

Be warmed!

I just submitted my warmup entry, a bit late i know.

Try it out here:

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-22-warmup/?action=preview&uid=1881

I’m aware of a few bugs, and the fact that there are no sounds, but yea rogues are silent so there you go. I’ll probably do an update in the future (i usually do with my LD entries), i belive it could have some potentional as a smartphone app or something. Maybe i’ll do that.

I’ll atleast clean up the graphics and add some more interesting tiles, maybe traps and a better sneak system.

For now, enjoy!

Stepping into the ring

Planning to give it a go this time around. Don’t have a ton of time to work, but I’m hoping to spend all of Saturday jamming something neat out. Might film it if I can figure out how to do that 😉

Using:

GML (sue me)

Paint.net

Graphics Gale

Audacity

Looking forward to this, hopefully I’ll get something worthwhile finished before my time runs out 😀

Ludum Dare #22 – Preparation for my first!

Well, in preparation for my first ludum dare I have some simple java which I have been writing for my Uni project which I’ll end up using.

It will use JOGL with processing.org’s stuff as the processing IDE makes me an unhappy pappy.

Current state of it can be found here:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13276897/Uni%20Stuff/Java%20packages/TentacleNoises.rar

Unless you can perform miracles I doubt it will run straight up. You can find an example of it here(derp @ libraries):

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13276897/Uni%20Stuff/Examples/Linux32Bit.rar

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13276897/Uni%20Stuff/Examples/Linux64Bit.rar

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13276897/Uni%20Stuff/Examples/Mac.rar

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13276897/Uni%20Stuff/Examples/Win32Bit.rar

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13276897/Uni%20Stuff/Examples/Win64Bit.rar

As its a jar, run from the command line: java -jar <file>

If that still throws errors, throw “-Djava.library.path=” with the path to the libraries in the mix.

This will be my first attempt at creating a full game, let alone for a competition. Hopefully it won’t go all horribly wrong.

I’ll be jaming

Will be taking part of the jam with a partner, because well it is my first attempt!… and I have no artistic ability whatsoever lol.

My weapons of choice:

  • Unity (game engine)
  • Notepad++
  • Gimp
  • Blender
  • Audacity (if needed)
  • Skype (have to talk to my partner after all)
  • Google!  (Alas I too need to look things up lol)

We will be doing a live-stream of our Skype call (if the internet holds up).  So if anyone wants to watch me eat, code and sleep, feel free!… (for the 3 days only…)

Ludum Dare 22, I’m In!

Heya all,

Yeah, in for this one. Finally managed to get around to doing one of these.

Anyways, the plan:

Platform: Flash (Web)

Programming Language: Actionscript 2.5 (Bit of 2.0, but of 3.0) or Actionscript 3.0 (If I can manage to completely remove references to Actionscript 2.0 in my code).

Sound: Used to have experience in Personal Composer 2.0, but I don’t have a Floppy Drive or a computer that can run it anymore, so probably going to be finding some free MIDI program on the internet to do some quick songs (I had one earlier, but can’t find it at the moment.)

Graphics: Yeah, at best, I’m going to take the HAL Kirby Origin story approach to this (That is, placeholders that hopefully will inspire the final version.).

Style of gameplay: Certainly 2-D movement, not quite ready to try and import 3-D into Flash yet. (Also, see Graphics). Aside from that…well sure, anything goes, but here’s a snippet of what I hope to do this Ludum Dare – or at least, my inspirations (Will probably inspire a tl:dr;):

So I’ve recently been playing a slew of RPGs, most notably Star Ocean: The Last Hope (And Star Ocean 1 too, but that has no bearing here, mostly). In SO:TLH, what really struck me was the Bonus Board mechanic in battles: how this worked was that if you defeated enemies a certain way (Say, killing multiple enemies in one hit, or with a Blindside Critical Hit move), you would get a certain type of point added to this Bonus Board, and after each match, whatever your Bonus Board had in points, it would give you certain bonuses (Such as 10% more money than you would’ve gotten normally, or 1 Skill Point more per level, or 10% EXP. These can stack, so you could get 20% more EXP with two points, for example.) to your grinding. If your main leader dies in battle or gets a critical hit, the board removes these points, less so if enough points are accumulated of a certain type, in succession.

Grinding; pretty much a cornerstone of the RPG genres out there, whether it be grinding for EXP, Money, Materials, IVs, EVs, Rare Candies (See Pokémon for the last three.), Morality Points, Pieces of Hearts (For those of you who want to argue Legend of Zelda as a RPG.) – you tell me about a RPG that doesn’t have grinding in it, and I’ll show you a liar (Hint: using a mirror.). At it’s essence, grinding happens when a player is doing an action solely to get a reward, and stops caring about the action in between not having the reward and having the reward. What Star Ocean was doing here, however, was letting you get the game to acknowledge why you were grinding, and helped motivate you to care about how you went about grinding – if you’re grinding for money for something expensive, you could play each battle specifically so that you would be getting more money than usual, and you’d want to maintain the work you did in an earlier battle.

So there’s that. There’s also the general idea of EXP being significantly different than any other type of source in a game – instead of having to redeem it manually by finding shopkeepers or such to get something that drains it, it automatically drains itself into it’s own little drain every time you get it, and eventually tells you “Hey! You have enough to level up! So yeah! You Level Up! Don’t want that? Too bad! You’re going up a level whether you like it or not!”. It may require you to spend stat points to finish leveling up, or it may do it for you automatically, but you can’t opt-out of leveling up after reaching a certain amount of EXP. Can you imagine if quests did that for you, where as soon as you got the last quest item for a quest (Say, it told you to get 12 health potions for someone), it would immediately just remove them from your inventory and add the reward to your inventory?

I can understand why that might not work for quest inventory items (The above quest being an obvious reason if you’re about to fight an Giant Ogre or something boss-like), but I’m thinking of doing something similar in the monetary field. And/Or in others. We’ll see.

tl:dr; Star Ocean’s Bonus Board, instant drains like EXP model.

I’m in!

I’m in! This will be my third Ludum Dare, after #20 and #21. I’m hoping this time to make something compatible with both PC and Android, so getting the UI working should be fun.

Tools:

  • Language: Java
  • Main Library: GDX
  • Sound: sfxr
  • Graphics: Blender, GIMP
  • IDE: Eclipse

I can’t wait to get started, and I’ve got my warmup entry here.

Nervousness… rising

First time and all…..

The days tick down and I’m starting to get nervous about this whole thing.

Work seems to be hectic and my time off is in doubt.

…..Who knows if I’ll be able to spend enough of the limited time actually doing dev stuff!

i think ill go into this without and pre-planned idea, blank canvas ftw

bring it!

Im Jamming! for the first time!

sup, I’m windoPAIN, i like to make happy games with sometimes a deeper meaning.

I’m going to use gmk, because im more of an artist than  a coder. just trying to learn java make me lapse into a 10 month coma.

I’m in!1!

I’m in. LD22 will be my first ludum dare. Looking forward to it 😀
My tools of destruction:

Code: C++
API: SFML 2.0
Graphics: GIMP
Sound: LMMS, Audacity
IDE: Code::Blocks

I will probably be streaming during the competition. I just need to find a way to stream from ubuntu first…

We’re out. And sort of in again.

We of Surprised Man were all up for being in the LD 22 Jam, as previously stated. Then silly old life got in the way and it turns out we’re going to be busy this weekend. We were sad, despondent even, but then we said this will not do.

So we have a plan. One weekend, probably in late January when we have a free weekend, we’re going to do the Ludum Dare Jam. “Cheating!” you may cry, but no! We are determined to do everything we can to not find out what the theme is between now and then. We’ll vote on them, look at the final list as usual, but on Saturday we go dark. If we accidentally find out the theme we have a backup plan, but hopefully we won’t have to use it.

Still, there’s something about that hard submission deadline that gives Ludum Dare proper a bit of an extra kick. It’s a proper measure of our failure if we don’t manage to make the game. So we needed something else, a stake  that would motivate us at least as much as that deadline.

Both of us intend to set aside ten pounds of our own money. Should we fail to make the game, that money will be donated towards a cause. But not just any. A cause that we really don’t want to give money to, be it political, charitable or otherwise. A cause that the very thought of donating money to sends shivers of repulsion up our collective spine.

The prospect of this weighs heavy on our hearts, fellow jammers, but this is what it has come to. This is how we will make ourselves do the Jam despite not being able to do the Jam.

Using libraries

I forgot to mention in my post that I will be using the YogUI GUI library in my game.

The link is here: Linkypoo

We’re in

We are three guys from the Netherlands, two programmers and one artist, and we’re joining the Jam.

Awesome, another Dutchie here. Where are you from?

Ludum Dare Starcraft 2 players…UNITE!

So, we’re all gamers, or at least..game devs right? Well, how many of us all play Starcraft 2? What I propose is forming a nice group of friendly players :) Maybe even having a tourney of some kind! Anyone in?

PS: You will find me on Battle.Net as neilogd.343 (I mostly hangout on NA, but also on SEA)

I’m in

I’ll be part of the Ludum Dare 22 party on Peaks Island, Maine.

  • Platform: Canvas/HTML5 (Web)
  • Graphics: Photoshop
  • IDE:  TextMate

Genre will probably be 2d scroller.

Our first try

I’m going in for the jam.

I’ll make the game with the guy next door, he was my partner at a web studio before.
Both of us still web developer but he had passion on music, and i myself turning my head on game developer

We think it will be fun, both of us doing creative things together, collaborate just like we did
when we at the web studio, but now  we’re doing something that we want to do, instead of job desc given.

Tools We’re gonna use:

  1. Text editor (obviously)
  2. sfxr for sound effect
  3. {i don’t know what is} for music
  4. html5 game engine (not decided yet)
  5. lots of food
  6. lots of caffeine
I hope we can use local “hackerspace” and provoke other developer to join at the hackerspace 😀
