LD22 December 16–19, 2011

Insies

This will be my first LD, I started learning Flash yesterday so I can submit a web entry. So far my perl/c++ skills are translating well and I think I can probably finish something.

The kongregate tutorials have been really helpful, now I’m looking for some library specific tutorials. (suggestions would be much appreciated )

Language: ActionScript (maybe haxe)

IDE: Flash CS5 trial (maybe FlashDevelop)

Library: Probably Flixel

Graphics: Gimp, Inkscape, Flash

Audio: animoog!

Protlofio

I’ve been working on a new Portfolio site at bastiandantilus.com instead of creating a warm-up game. Currently it only has two very basic flash arcade games and one shockwave puzzle game. I need to make something I can be a bit more proud of for LD22, which makes me a bit more committed to making a web-based game.

Haha, protlofio.

Progress on familiarizing with Allegro

I added to my simple arrow keys move program. Now it has sprites and animation! Pretty pathetic really, but I just did it for the experience to save valuable time looking at docs later. The player is moved around by arrow keys, has momentum, and has an emoticon/smiley face 4-frame animation. I’m soooo ready for the jam!

I’m in

I’m going to use canvas 2d and js. Animation and sound are not my strong suite so we’ll see how it goes.  Looking forward to it.

try{ IntentDeclaration id = LudumDare().getIntentDeclarationFactory().getNewIntentDeclaration(true); }

catch (ProjectNotFinishedException pnfe) {
// oh dear…
}

Why not, I’ll give it a go.  It doesn’t look like any of the themes I could actually make something fun out of are front-runners.

Tools and frameworks:

  • Compiler: GCC
  • Language: C
  • Graphics, Setup, Sound and Timing: Allegro 4, possibly with AllegroGL
  • Content Creation: SFXR, MilkyTracker, Gimp, Mappy, maybe AutoTracker
  • Sleep/Energy Management/Kidney Damage: Red Bull
  • Sustenance: Chipotle

I’m in, again!

I’m going to give this another shot.  My attempt during LD22 did not go as planned and feature creep/large scope caused me to bow out.  Not this time.

Tools

Language:  C#

IDE:  Visual Studio 2010 Pro

Framework:  XNA

Personal library:  https://bitbucket.org/deadpixelsociety/twodee

Visuals:  Paint.NET

Sound:  sxfr

looking forward to it

This will be my second submission. I used XNA last time, but I want to use Java this time around to make sure the linux/mac/freebsd/etc people can play my game. Good luck to everyone and have fun!

Insane Idea

So I’m entering Ludum Dare 22. So’s my brother and friend. The plan is to live stream our desktops (or the primary screen of them at least) , take a photo every 5 seconds for a time lapse, and record the information we place on out whiteboards. And here’s where I’m insane, I’m coding in a language I only decided to start learning today: Java. In about half an hour I set up a development environment, scripts to compile and run and a base program to do my logic loop (which I won’t be using come this weekend).
My set up is as follows:

  • Intel Core i7 950
  • 10GB DDR3 RAM
  • 2 x 22″ 1080p LED Monitors
  • 1 x 19″ 1440×900 LCD Screen in Portrait.
  • Windows 7 Ultimate x64

And here’s a pretty picture of it all.

Home Desk Space

Languages:

  • Java (Main Client)
  • PHP (High Scores or anything web based I want to implement)
  • Game Maker (Fall back if Java ends up being insanely hard)

Programs:

  • Paint.Net (Pixel Art and Touch Ups)
  • Fireworks/Photoshop (Vectorising Drawn Art)
  • Notepad ++ (Programming)
  • Open Office (Documentation)
  • Game Maker (Fall Back Programming)
  • VirtuaWin (Desktop Management, 3 Screens isn’t enough)
  • pixie (Colour Selection)

Plan is to use mainly black and white, and maybe a red or two for colours.  I’m going to be drawing and scanning my menu systems in, and then vectorising them. As for game ideas, I have a few, some that I won’t be able to do easily due to the lack of knowledge of Java, and some that would look epic and take virtually no time. Worst comes to worst I’ll make a text based adventure game and make a single nice piece of art for it.

I’m in! #2

Going to do Ludum Dare this weekend, for the second time! If you’d like to see my previous projects (including my last Ludum Dare game, which was called You Don’t Fit), see here.

My plans: I intend to use Polycode to make my Ludum Dare game this time. I’m really excited about starting to make games with Polycode but I’m still struggling to get past startup issues. I have a Polycode template project I’ve been working on which adds to the basic Polycode template project an SVG loader and an interactive LUA console; I’m hoping I’ll have that working enough to my satisfaction that I can use that as the base code for my game this weekend. If I succeed, I’ll be pulling from this open source repository as a base for LD.

It’s possible that either outstanding bugs with my LUA console, a shortage of time this weekend (I’m only going to get to spend a small part of the weekend on my LD game… I have tickets to see Dntel in Santa Cruz :D), or a really inconvenient theme will mean I have to abandon Plan Polycode, in which case I’ll be using my personal C++ framework that I used for the last LD, and possibly pulling library code from one of the games I’ve previously released as open source.

I am excited about doing LD again, though I hope I can get my time/LUA issues sorted out before the weekend.

GASP! Hello brony!

I don’t think I would describe myself as a “bro” but, hello!

It begins

I’m hardly a confident programmer, but I’ve been dabbling in programming for a good 3-4 years now.  Really cracking down on learning in the past few weeks.

I took a long break from programming for many reasons, but this is what’s going to spur me on! I’ll be participating in all LD challenges I can, especially during this period of unemployment, I can afford the messed up sleeping pattern =p

Language: Java

Tools: Paint.net  MilkyTracker Eclipse.

I want the beard category to win 😀

I’m In

I’m going with JS/Canvas. I’ll be using the basics of my warm-up as a base for handling input and drawing.

https://github.com/doowttam/-LD48-Warm-Up

I’m thinking about going top-down or puzzle though, at which point I’ll be writing everything from scratch.

Other tools: Gimp, sfxr, Wolfram Tones

A revision to my “I’m In”

I will not be making a 3D game this time around. I simply don’t have the time to learn the basics while doing the compo, so I’ll just be making another 2D game. By basics, I mean all the 3D math and stuff needed.

That doesn’t necessarily mean I won’t use jMonkeyEngine for 2D though. Its integration with external libraries on the scene graph is phenomenal and I’d like to find a way to utilize, say, Bullet nodes/controllers in a 2D environment. Plus, I find wrangling with LibGDX to be un-fun and rewriting boilerplate code for Slick again is not in my sights. I spent way too much time on simple crap like entity management on the Discovery game from LD19.

I’m guessing using jMonkeyEngine for 2D stuff the hacky way would be switching the camera to Orthographic view and just using objects with lots of volume in the Z axis, since I am terrible with physics.

In addition, there are a few new tools I may use:

  • Tile Studio
  • The Games Factory/Multimedia Fusion (total last resort, if I’m just not feeling up to speed)
  • PXTone definitely, though I mentioned FamiTracker earlier I absolutely loath tracker interfaces and PXTone is like a really, really simple FL Studio to me.

There was some talk between my friends and I about doing the Jam instead, but one of them may be having travel conflicts that’ll prevent them from participating. Oh well. Dare it is.

I’m in too

So I’m typing this basically to announce that I’ll be taking part in LD 22 as well. It’s the first time I’ve both been aware of the competition and been free to take part. I’m not sure if I have to make an introductory post or not so I figured better safe than sorry.

I’ve been messing around with game making for years but never really finished anything so this should be a nice incentive to get a small project done quick.

The software I’ll be using will be:
Gimp for 2d art
Blender for game engine and possibly 3d art
I’m not sure what I’ll be doing the sound with yet but it’ll probably be either audacity or the aviary web app.

Looking forward to giving it a go, best of luck to everyone

yeaahhhhh

this is awesome

It is!

I’m in for whatever it’s worth. (updated)

Hi there!

I have been pretty exited about the next LD48. I’m really new to game making, have been practicing for a couple of month with some tutorials but nothing like 48 hours game making  so I hope to hear some good advice on this one (not that I haven’t read almost everything here at LD.com). My gold is to get to one of the finish lines(comp or jam, whatever) and toolchain of choice would be:

  • Unity3D; setting up into a 2d constraint and js scripting.
  • Pixen (since I in Mac OS). It is great since you can use background images and I’m not to good art maker or have a super tablet.
  • CFXR for sound effects.
  • Garage band or some loopy music maker to simplify things around.
  • Orthello (free-version); and this one particularly have never used so second thoughts all over my head. And in the case of using sprites then:
  • texture packer.
so comments very much appreciated. I’m so nervous already! I even spent too many time on this post ¬¬ As it seams to be know I’m going to use also this other 2 libraries/tools/scripts/whatever you want to call them: under my approach to the game making

Whenfore Dare us: Throw the Looking Glass is (hopefully?) in!

So we’re doing Ludum Dare this weekend, but not as we know it.

I’ve found in the past that Ludum Dare does an amazing job at helping to build prototypes of games that may have a bit of a ridiculous concept. I’m still holding onto the thought that my first entry might one day make a prettier re-appearance, and I’ve got some plans for an upscaled version of my latest (“Escape from Flatland: An Adventure of Two Dimensions“).

The fact is that Ludum Dare seems to be adding to the already-large pile of games we want to make, many of which need prototyping. And Ludum Dare is great at helping us to create prototypes.

Do you see where this is going?

Yes, it’s true. We’re going into Ludum Dare with a pretty specific game in mind. A game that I’ve wanted to prototype for a while, and needed an event like Ludum Dare to give me both the impetus and the hard time limit to do it. The fact is that if we didn’t make it now, this game might not be made (as it is a little ambitious), and thus I’m going to take the opportunity to make it.

What’s less clear is what happens on this end. We’d be looking to enter the Jam part of the competition (there are four of us), and I’d love to post lots of updates as we go and have the game on the Ludum Dare site as normal, but the fact is that we will be breaking the rules. If it interferes too much with the core idea, we may not even use the theme.

So my question is: LD Community, are you ok with this? I’d be sure to label our entry with the fact that this was a pre-decided game idea, so it’s not like we’d be hiding what we’re doing…

Our game will be being made using Google AppEngine and playN, and will likely have WolframTones music.

I think it’s okay not to use the theme, but people may not like your game. Have fun though.

There are no rules in the jam. Go for it!

It’s the jam, go wild! LD48 is all about what YOU get out of it, and a working prototype of a long-imagined game sounds pretty good to me. I look forward to playing it…

Didn’t hear any music when I played, you should check the terms of use on the Wolfram Tones, they’re quite restrictive.

I M N

I’m all in this weekend. I have (mostly) cleared my calendar, and I’m ready to go.

Doing something a little different this time, I’m going to do the Jam with an artist friend of mine, NinjaFartOfDoom (I can only assume he meant to type “NinjaOfArt” eh?) and were going to see what happens.

Tools: Depending on the theme and idea, we’ll either use Cocos2D or my basecode (which is getting a bit crufty).

Here I Come

The time has finally come. After more than three hours of exam writing, and almost double spent on studying for it, I am now ready to declare my entry into Ludum Dare 22! I’ve been away far too long, with my entries for the 17th and the 20th dare being almost a century away, the ancient game making creature will once again move into action. We’ll just hope the game won’t be ancient as well…

Leaving that behind us I can now focus on what to actually use. I wanted to try some new language and some new environment but that seems lika a really bad idea. So I will stick to what I know:

My fast prototyping library consisting of old C++ on top of the nice SFML engine.
sfxr, or maybe the newer bfxr for sound effects. It’s seriously great, give it a try!
Probably mtpaint for some nice pixelated graphics. I would like to try out inkscape for some vector based graphics but I might skip it this time.

LMMS for music making. This I tried to use a long time ago… And failed miserably. It’ll be a fun, fun weekend!
And finally my little timelapse recording hack for linux. Be careful if you want to try it, it will most likely blow up in your face and take your computer down with it. Handle with care.

And of course here’s where I’ll be spending most of my waking hours:

Ludum Dare 22 setup
I’m planning on getting some new food during all this, but I’m not entirely sure yet.

Planning on using c++ with SDL this time.
