LD22 December 16–19, 2011

I’m In … But a bit Scared

Last times I managed to participate to Ludum Dare I wasn’t prepared enough for some reasons. So I focus this last weekend and the coming week to setup and learn as much as I can about a game engine.

However, I’m still scared because I know better how to build a project on the long run than on short times. I almost never have enough time to set a project with Unity or some similar powerful tools. That’s the problem when you’re not working on games at dayjob and at home. My current home project isn’t a game and it’s kills me a bit that it isn’t.

I guess I just need a fix of adrenaline to forget fear and just dive in this compo.

So, I’m not absolutely sure yet, but I thnk my tools will be based around Panda 3D, with Blender for models. Yes I’m going 3D. I could have used SFML like other times but it doesn’t motivate me enough. Last compo I participated with a friend we managed to finish the game but it wasn’t fun and was ugly (because we got graphics few hours before ending).

Now I want to focus on something I like graphically : procedural “geometric” shapes.

That’s also why I hesitate on using Panda3D. I know better some tools based on Ogre3D to generate shapes procedurally but it suppose I setup a whole framework before getting something more than graphic rendering.

I’ll spend Wednesday (I dont work that day) setting up the basiss of the game for Ludum Dare.

I also have to make sure to wake up early Saturday Morning.

Gambate to myself!

LD22 – I’m ready

Okay, so I didn’t quite finish the warm-up game, shortly after writing my last post I decided I was tired and decided to play Oblivion for 10 hours instead.

BUT, at least my Canvas library worked – (can be found here: https://github.com/robashton/layers )

I’ll be using that this weekend, and in the spirit of everybody else, this is my list of stuff.

  • I’ll be coding in Javascript with HTML5 canvas and perhaps some WebGL for particles and some effects (if my library works)
  • I’ll be using gedit on my Gnome’s up Ubuntu install
  • I might try and make it work on mobile devices for an extra challenge
  • I’ll try to do screen-caps as I do it using that tool on the site
  • I’ll be starting at 3am Saturday morning my time, I reserve the right to be a grumpy arse all weekend
  • I might take Monday off work, as finishing at 3am Monday morning won’t make for a happy work day 😉
  • I’ll be cutting down on coffee this week to make sure I’m able to get some sleep on Friday night – sad face.
I’ll spend some of this week finishing the warm-up project, it still needs sounds and I really should make sure my full stack is working before the weekend.

LD22 – I’m in!

This is my first Ludum Dare! I was going to go in the last one – but had to pull out unfortunately. I’ve uploaded my “I’m in” video, and just voted on round 1 😛 A bit about me for anyone who actually reads this:

  • 21 y/o from Brisbane, Australia
  • Programming in JS, HTML5 and Canvas this LD on an 11″ netbook.
  • Going to be taking screenshots along the way
Woo! Oh, and follow me on Twitter: @aaronsnoswell.

What i’ll be using

  • Language: Javascript / HTML5 Canvas
  • Art: Adobe Illustrator / Adobe Photoshop
  • Audio: If there is audio, i’ll be using sfxr and any modifications to that with Audacity
  • Base Code / Libraries:
Asset Manager from the Google I/O presentation for pre-loading images.
    My base template
  • Screenshots: I’ll set up to take periodic screenshots, a word of warning though, I can’t guarantee it will be completely SFW 😛

Im in

This is my first Ludum Dare and as such I don’t know what’s going on… though I’m pretty sure saying ‘Im in’ means I’m all official.

Im going to be using Processing probably to make the game… I was going to use opengl but I figure Processing is a nice trade of having a bit of openglnuss and having extremely speedy development time. Photoshop for the visuals and sounds err… I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it, I’m thinking microphone and making strange noises.

Ah yeah, SFXR! Ive heard of that and had it in the back of my head as something to maybe use but I couldntfor the life of me remember what it was called. Doh I didnt think to look on the tools page :)

Music Tools

After a few people pointed out in my last post that Wolfram Tones wasn’t really that great, and you couldn’t export it, I decided to search for a different tool. Looking round the “I’m in!” posts, I saw someone mention a web app called Audiotool, so I checked it out. And it is incredible for a free tool. If I have time, I will definitely be using it.

On a side note, I’ll be occupied Sunday afternoon and probably into the evening, and probably most of Saturday evening, so I may extend my game into the Jam: I have a bunch of free time on Monday, so I should be able to get some decent music and artwork done and clean up some code if necessary. Bring on the weekend!

Actually, you can export midis from Wolfram.

Just click “email” button, enter you email address and click send and voilà, you can download the midi file from your inbox folder. 😉

Ah, I could have sworn there was a way last time I used it… however, the tones really aren’t that great 😉

I think it’s about time to do this

I’ve done some very minor game development from my own little desk. It was several years ago since last I wrote a line of code for it (Subspace Battle) and that definitely took me more than 48 hours to throw together. But I’m really anxious to try something new, and Ludum Dare is the perfect chance!

Whatever it is I’m doing, it’s going to be using Free software-tools, for instance Vim, Blender and Gimp and I’ll be developing on GNU/Linux. I’m not sure about graphics/game engine, but I’m deciding between Ogre3D, Irrlicht or just SDL. My previous game was done in Irrlicht, and I really think that is what will convince me into using it again. Audio is probably handled either through the content generator I’ve seen people talk about here at Ludum Dare, or fiddling around in Ardour.

I have no idea how this will end, but it’s worth a try!

Another generic “I’m in” post

Ohai internets. How’s your coding life?

Well, it’s time for this again. After the results from last time (Innovation: Rank 37/599; Fun: Rank 66/599; Overall: Rank 93/599) I’m pretty motivated so, let’s see what kind of wierd stuff I come up with this LD.

My team is the same as last year:
– On the offense, ActionScript 3, FLEX and FlashPunk
– The middle row: GIMP, my crappy drawing tablet, pxTone and Hydrogen Drum Sequencer
– And in the back, to defend me from losing motivation: Chiptune, Vocaloid, orange juice and sandwiches

LET’S DO THIS

EDIT: Almost forgot the obligatory desk photo
Suyo's desk for Ludum Dare 22
It’s pretty tidy compared to my other LD desks (only useless thing on my desk I can spot is the package of Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA extend. Why do I even keep it on my desk), also dual monitor, for double work speed! Or working and distraction at once. Or double distraction.

Double Distraction it is.

Intent of declaration

I intend to declare my intention to declare my intention to intend my declaration to take part in this most esteemed competition.

Not partaken of any daring ludology in ages, and haven’t completed one since my 3-hour abomination in LD12:The Tower (yes, that long ago)

I’ll be looking to do something in either PHP or Node.js for the serverside logic and Javascript/Canvas for the clientside logic, depending upon theme and ideas.

I’m in.

My first Ludum Dare. It’s going to be a struggle I can tell.

I’ll be trying out our new JS framework, PlayCanvas

For art and sound I’ll be using Blender and as3sfxr probably. Hopefully you won’t make me model a kitten.

Stuck!

Trying to decide between doing a canvas web game or developing for Android…

Web developer by trade, very comfortable with both Java and javascript development, first real move towards doing a complete game, let alone a jam!

Any thoughts on which direction to go?

Canvas web game :)

We’re gonna do this!

Jawdrop is here to declare that we are going to enter this competition!!

Are we going to win this?
It would be nice but we are mostly doing this for fun and to give us motivation!

I’m in…. Maybe?

I’m a little bit uncertain about how everything works. I’m very new to this sort of thing, and at this point all that I think I am capable of would be a text adventure made in Java. If I even figure out how to make it (I haven’t actually ever made a real game before), I would be sure to put plenty of effort into it. All I’m wondering is whether or not that would be considered spam, because it wouldn’t exactly be the same caliber as what everyone else would be making. Also, if text adventures are okay,  by doing this post am I entered in the competition? Or is it too late? Sorry….

Text adventures are definitely OK for the compo. 😀 As for ‘qualifying,’ all you need is an account on this site – then click the “submit here” link in the bottom-center of the banner (right now you would be submitting to the warmup weekend), fill out the form, and you’re good!

There’s a wide variety of ability in LD., so don’t worry about caliber.

Awesome, thanks everyone!

Wow.

There were LOADS of awesome themes in Round 2. Then there were some not-so-great themes.

Also: Evolution needs a -1 :p

IM IN!

my first LD, i watched last year. hope im not to late, internets been playing up. hopefully stable to help we work when the timer goes down 😀

i think ill be using mmf2, dont know enough ‘real code’ to create a game in the allotted time.

GFX: photoshop, ingame editor

music: maybe my own, if i can be bothered.

how do i submit code for mmf2?

xD

– pygame
– gimp
– guarana extract
– anything else I might need

See you then.

Allright, good luck and have fun then :)

Im in! (LD#22)

This will be my first time participating, and I can’t wait!

Creation tools I will be using:

Code/Engine: Game Maker 8

Audio: sfxr, Audacity

Graphics: Paint.net

Questions!

All right, new guy has some questions:

1. When we talk about base code, what are we talking about? I mean, I have some programs that I have made lately that experiment with physics, as well as a program that does some grid-based graphics placing. I am not even sure I would use them, but what exactly do I need to declare for use in the game, per se? Do I need to declare what I intend to use for graphics and sounds?

2. Can you post games directly to the site? I would think not, but I’m asking anyway. If not, any convenient place I could sign up for quickly that won’t hurt me with sign-up fees and stuff?

– I you want to use some of your earlier code, you must make it public and available for anyone prior to the start of the jam. I’m pretty sure all your graphics and sounds have to be done during the 48h, so I think you can’t re-use anything.

1. You could just tell what language/IDE you use, if you’re using any libraries, it would be good to mention them as well =) People usually also tell what programs they use for gfx + sound.

Is it necessary to declare these in order to use them though? In the rules, it talks about making stuff public in order to use them. If I wanted to use my physics experiments, would I have to post them to this site?

I’m in I suppose.

Title says it all really.

Possible tools/software : GIMP, Lua, Love2D, Python, PyGame, C, SDL, Flash, Flixel. Most likely Lua+Love2D/Python+Pygame.
