Who needs to study, I’m makin’ a game

Well … depending on the theme. If I have an idea I think I can get done in between studying for a final and finishing a paper, then I’m definitely in. Stupid grad school taking up so much of my time.

If I do join, then I will be using:

Languages: javascript and php

IDE: ShiftEdit

Art: pixlr.com

Sound: probably garageband

“Finished” is ambiguous

Well, I didn’t end up getting much time this weekend (in between studying for exams and grading students’ exams) to work on my game, but I’ve finished it.

My game is an Oregon Trail-esque game that presents the player with a tough moral dilemma.

My drawing ability hasn’t really improved since I was a kindergartener, and I am pretty much tone deaf, but I gave art and music a try.

I hope you all enjoy it.

Always when I’m busiest

Well, this will only be my second time doing LD, but both times have come at the end of the semester when I’m busiest.

I’ve been working hard for the last two weeks so that I’ll have time to work really hard this weekend, fortunately the work this weekend will be a lot more fun than writing papers and grading.

Engine: Unity
Art: pixlr.com
Music/Sound: Garageband and audacity

Logiki: a logic game

Just finished making my entry. It is a puzzle game meant to teach formal logic in a visual and fun way. If only I had had more time to make more levels and features. Oh well, time to go study for my logic final :)

October Challenge Entry

Just submitted my October Challenge entry. I hope you all enjoy it. Unfortunately I’ve been spending too much time working on games recently and not enough time working on grad school stuff, so I have more I want to do on this project.

I hope you all enjoy it.

Finally an LD when I’m not too busy

I’ve been too busy to participate in the last two LDs, so I can’t wait for this weekend.

100 Reviews

Woohoo!!!!

This LD is the first time I have gotten to 100 reviews. When this LD rolled around I decided I was going to go all out reviewing other people’s games, and so this time has been the most fun LD I’ve participated in.

If you haven’t already checked out my game, you definitely should.

Give and Take

I’m planning on building on it while I’m on break. I will post back here with my progress in the future.

I’m in

Once again I will take a weekend off from doing the work I am supposed to do and instead make a game. I’ve been looking forward to this weekend for the last month.

I’ll be using:
Unity
Audacity/abundant-music.com
pixlr

My goal ever since I started participating has been to get in the top 100 overall in the compo. Last LD was the closest I’ve gotten, hopefully this time I’ll make it.

Woohoo! LD time

I’m in.

Unity 5
Gimp
Wolfram Tones/abundant-music

I’m so happy that there is going to be an LD this month. I was really worried when a couple of months ago, since the August LD is the only one where I am not overwhelmingly busy. Of course, being busy usually doesn’t stop me from participating, but it will be nice to have a relaxing weekend for making a game. Thanks a lot to those of you who are putting in the effort to run this LD! You all are awesome people. Hopefully POV gets the rest he needs so that December will be the best LD so far.

Ludum Dare 37

I’m in

Unfortunately LD falls on my wife’s birthday this time around. However, I’ll be participating as much as I can.

Unity
some procedural music generator
piskel and pixlr for the art

LD 38

I'm in for the nth time.

I don't remember how many times I've participated and I can't be bothered to look it up. However, I've never been this excited for an LD. For the first time ever, I have no other important responsibilities for this weekend. I've finished grading and I don't have any papers or presentations until the next weekend. Time to make a game!

I'll be working with Unity C#. Art will be made with Krita. Sound will be done via some procedural generation and sfxr. I'm planning on staying up most of tonight trying to get the mechanics of my game working before noon on Saturday.

Motivation and the Wall Ahead

I assume other people get this feeling as well. You've spent all weekend, and I mean all weekend (excluding a little time for sleep), working on a game. You get to the end and you feel both a feeling of motivation since you see how much you've improved and a feeling of distraught when looking at other's games. The quality of the games that come out in LD is astonishing, to say the least. I want to be able to make games at that level.

For me, LD gives me tons of conflicting emotions. This is part of the reason I love LD so much. It motivates me through both giving me a platform for practice and feedback while also letting me see how much farther I have to go as a game dev.

As for my game this time. Check it out here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/$16562

Bug Fixes and the Rules

Sorry for the following rant. The purpose of LD is of course to improve our own abilities. But part of the reason we moved to the new website was to make judging more fair, so the competition is at least somewhat important. Since there are bugs in my game I'd like to fix, but I don't want to for the sake of fair competition, the following rant is meant to alleviate some of the stress I get from seeing bug fix posts.

Begin Rant

Is it just me, or are more people doing bug fixes this time around. I get the feeling that people are being a little to fast and loose with the bug fixes. Things that should go in a post-compo/jam release are just being put in the game itself. If I remember correctly, the rules only allow for fixing bugs that make the game unplayable. If you have a bug that makes the game not very fun, but it still runs, then that bug is part of the product you released for the competition. Of course there are going to be problematic bugs in a game made in 48 hours, but part of the skill required for a competition like this is limiting the effects of such bugs. If you can go in during the week after and fix ones that just make your game not very fun, that feels like you are doing more than just making the game playable.

End Rant

Come Destroy Worlds with Me. Oh, and rate my game too!

Join Winston in a journey around the Tiny Galaxy destroying all life he comes across!

I've got a lot of comments, but I crave more :grimacing:. I'd also like ratings. world3.PNG

New Art Style for World Destroyer

I'm working on redesigning World Destroyer in an art style that I might be able to accomplish: flat design vector art.

I'm pretty excited by my first attempt at redesigning the main character, Winston. Here is a comparison of the old character and the new design. worlddestroyer.pngWinston.png

I obviously still need to practice a lot, but I'm excited about trying to get better at some form of visual art.

If you haven't already, check out World Destroyer. Your comments and ratings are much appreciated!

First night: Design and Character Art

Here we go, another ludum dare.

Well, I can't say I was looking forward to the theme, but I'm happy with the idea for the game.

The game is about containing corruption with the use of magic. Obviously the more corruption you have, the worse it is.

All I was able to do tonight was some designing and the character art. I told myself that I wouldn't stay up late this time, since I have to grade exams, but here I am at midnight working.

Here's some character art: firemage.gif
