Idea and Mechanics of CHANGELUST

Hi people!

I’m Pedro Fuentes game designer and programmer, and with two artists (Javier Urios and Oscar Ibañez) we made the game “CHANGELUST”.

If you’re interested, check it out here: http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-35/?action=preview&uid=51710

The idea is inspiring by Naoki Urasawa’s comic: Monster. Inside of the story, there’s a tale: “The Monster with No Name”.

tumblr_mep8arhndt1rws6bd

The Monster gets inside people to keep their names because he doesn´t have a name. Unfortunately, the monster grows inside the people and possesses the people.

It is a creepy history… the mechanics of our game are inspiring about this tale. The main character can posses other enemies, and transform his shape/skin to improve his abilities… with a short time, if the time passes, the main character transforms in the enemy and loses the game…

Hope you like the game and the idea! Thanks for all !

Making of "NoooooMan" (Part I)

Hi people! I’m Pedro Fuentes game designer, and with Sergio Martinez (programmer) and Daniel Gomez (artist) we made the game “NoooooMan”. NMLASTa.gif

The Idea

The idea is inspired by the popular action scenes in movies in which one person sacrifices himself, saying NOOOOOOOOOoooooo and stops a projectile (perfect for the theme “Sacrifices must be made”). TMzn.gif SimplisticFakeGelada-size_restricted.gif

With these scenes, we have a clear overview about the game, the camera position, the character (in front of the camera), the guns, and the civils (innocents), pretty similar to penalty kicks in games. NomanIdeaLow.jpg NomanIdeaLow1.jpg

Concepts and mockups about the game

The evolution of the game

It is important to focus on the core game and the main mechanics at the beginning, and later, iterate step by step, here you can see the evolution of the game: 02.gif

First Prototype (focus on the core game: character movement and the time behaviour -bullet time-)

Prototype v3 (focus on bullets and guns behaviour)

Early version of the game (focus on the innocents behaviour and win/game over condition).

Actual version of the game

The next days we will explain in another posts the visuals, the tools and another details that we use in the game.

If you’re interested, check it out here (the game is available for web browser, Windows and MacOSX. Enjoy! I can play and rate some other games too.) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/43/noooooman

Thanks for playing! And Merry Christmas everyone!

Making of NoooooMan (Part II)

Hi people! I’m Pedro Fuentes, Game designer, and with Sergio Martinez (programmer) and Daniel Gomez (artist) we made the game “NoooooMan”. In the last post I explained the Idea and the Evolution of the game (you can see the previous post here --> https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/43/noooooman/making-of-noooooman-part-i). In this post I will explain the visuals of the game. NMLASTa.gif

The Visuals

For the concept of NoooooMan, as the main character we made a loser hero, but he tries to do good things and sacrifices his life. We made Noooooman fat, short and with “innocent” colors like white and yellow. NooomanConceptLow.jpg

NoooooMan concept by Daniel Gomez

With the civilians, we used as a reference Superman proportions: big hands, huge body, strong constitution, etc. With this, we created a good, strange and hilarious contrast between NoooooMan and the civilians. civils.jpg

Civil concept by Daniel Gomez

We used for the environment references like the Wayne’s Mansion (Batman). With this environment, it is coherent adding the cutlery props like tray and spoons. Also, we did the modular drawers to reuse a lot of pieces and have a lot of variants. wardroves1.jpg cutleryprops.jpg

At last, we animated the characters using Spine. NoooManSpine.jpg noman_gif.gif CivilScare.gif CivilFall.gif

Making of NoooooMan (Part III)

Hi people! I’m Pedro Fuentes, Game designer, and with Sergio Martinez (programmer) and Daniel Gomez (artist) we made the game “NoooooMan”. In the last post I explained the Idea and the Evolution of the game (you can see the previous post here –> https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/43/noooooman/making-of-noooooman-part-i) and the Visuals (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/43/noooooman/making-of-noooooman-part-ii). In this post I will explain the tools that we used in the game. NMLASTa.gif

The Tools

We used Unity to make the game. It’s a game that mixes 2D and 3D at the same time. All the characters, the environment and the guns are in 2D, but the bullet and the trajectory are in 3D. To manage the time (real time and bullet time) we used the plugin Chronos. tools0.gif

All the elements are in 2D, except the bullet.

Sergio Martinez made different custom tools like the GunManager. With this tool, it was easy to create a lot of levels. The tool can detect the number of guns and it’s possible to configure every gun: the trajectory, the point of the bullet impact and the time when the gun shoots. NomanUnity.jpg NOmanUNity2jpg.jpg

GunManager, a great tool to create fast the levels.

Thanks for playing! And Happy New Year everyone!

Making of "Meds of Honor" (Part I)

Hi people! I’m Pedro Fuentes game designer, and with Sergio Martinez (programmer) we made the game “Meds of Honor”.

Visuals

In this game we didn't have an artist, so we made simple graphics based on Minecraft and voxel art.

There are a lot of references about the old FPS games in our game (we wanted to remember and pay tribute to the old FPS games that have entertained us for so many hours, as Doom, Half Life and Quake, among others…). Here you can see our art based on the old FPS games:

Health Charger based on Half Life MoH_HealthCharger.jpg

Medkit based on Duke Nukem 3D MoH_Medkit.jpg

Zombieman enemy based on Doom MoH_Zoombie.jpg

Lost Soul enemy based on Doom MoH_LostSoul.jpg

End Stage Trigger based on Doom MoH_VictoryLevel.jpg

In the next days we will explain in another posts the tools and another details that we used in the game.
