Prepare your builds!

steamdeck.jpg

Hey! Just a friendly reminder to get your build tools ready. Get your Unity build support packages, download your Godot export templates, prepare your UE4 pain and suffering, test your Cargo crossbuilds, dust off your CI pipelines.

A few of us will be running Linux - possibly more than 2 of us - and that number is slowly increasing, helped undoubtedly by the publicity around Steam Deck (I got one!). So I think it makes sense to try and see if you can export your stuff for Linux. If you work in Godot or Unity, it's likely just a few button presses. Unreal users, well, best of luck. HTML5 builds are of course nice, but remember that they don't always run all that well, so for some players, the experience in your game might end up sub-par.

If you'd like to make sure that your Linux export works fine ahead of the jam, feel free to message me via any of the methods in my profile!

Looking for a laugh while you wait?

I saw "Escape the game" as a possible theme earlier and my submission last year was basically that: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/49/unstable-genius

Give it a try if you didn't get a chance. Might make you smile ;)

I'm in

After taking a longer break from game making I wanted to return to LD to celebrate the anniversary.

I decided to leave Game Maker behind and finally try my hand at Godot.

Looking forward to the experience!

Some game ideas

Some ideas for current themes. I hope you will like them.

  • Some assembly required - player has to compile the game themselves (on hard difficulty build instructions are not included)
  • Playing both sides - you are your own enemy, which means you have to hit yourself from time to time
  • Fragile - there is 20% chance the game will crash on any user input
  • Color is a mechanic - you play as a car mechanic and his name is Color
  • One use only - you have to complete the game on first play
  • Replication - everything you touch replicates until the game runs out of memory and crashes
  • Automation - game that plays itself, no user input required
  • Delay the inevitable - there is no win condition and game never ends, but player doesn't know it
  • Overflow - create a game that has buffer overflow and crashes
  • Echoes - Echocardiograms - a doctor simulator
  • Leave something behind - retire from Ludum Dare and become a farmer
  • A faithful companion - a game about companion cube from Portal, but try not to get sued by Valve

Theme Voting, Round 2, ideas so far

A lot less themes in this round that I can get ideas for. A few of my ideas are based off recreating a classic

Some assembly required - a platformer where every level/life starts you with a missing part - each level is missing pieces and you have a limited number of parts to complete it

Playing both sides - one-player volleyball where you have to run to both sides of the next. keep the ball up. - some of the ideas in round one involved being a double-agent, I guess that fits here too. - a game about fueling PC/Mac flame wars

Fragile - game with destructible level, like Angry Birds? - you're a boxer with a glass jaw

One use only - game involving grenades - you play as a robot that has to self-destruct at the end of each level and be replaced for the next

Replication - space shooter where you can clone an enemy ship to play alongside you - a game about being a software pirate

Mutation - game where level-to-level you advance with new superpowers

Automation - a game where you have to pre-program your player movements before level starts - a game about building a rube goldberg machine

Delay the inevitable - any sort of "endless" game, endless runner, zombie attack, progressing tower defense, etc. - a game about running from police, survive as long as you can

Layers - a game like Burger Time - game involving cakes or pancakes - platformer with three levels all on top of each other (sky, ground, underground) that you travel between

Corruption - a game about hacking - a game about being a corrupt figure (politician, cop, ect)

Color is a mechanic - puzzle game like Dr. Mario, Puzzle Fighter, etc. - a stealth game where you change your color to blend in

Overflow - puzzle game like tetris where you have to keep the play area from filling - game about bailing out a sinking ship

You control the environment, not the character - you're a ghost possessing inanimate objects in a house - spy game, you're watching your partner through cameras and hacking doors/etc to help them progress

Leave something behind - you have limited inventory space so you have to leave items to get new ones - you're a theft who leaves a calling card

Snowball effect - resturaunt manager. serving customers, and doing well, means more customers

A faithful companion - game involving dogs

Once more unto the breach!

Not planning to participate in the compo this time, unless things go really well, really early. Though it won't be AAA, or very long, I'm excited to be unveiling a new sci-fi universe for LD's 20th anniversary. It's been in the works for a couple years now, since JS13k 2020 and it's unusual theme of "404"

Will be using the LittleJS Starter Kit mvp I published this past weekend, along with Blender, Gimp. Possibly DAZ Studio and/or Music Maker JAM as well, if there's time.

I'm in! Wanna team up?

I'm in! For some reason I'm pretty excited about this one. Maybe I just gotta scratch that game jam itch, ya' know?

My usual tools that I use are: - Godot Engine with GDScript (could use C# though) - Inkscape, Krita, Blender for art (most of the time Inkscape because it's easy to make something presentable) - Audacity

Thinking of going FPS this time around, but absolutely no promises. It's just something I've been toying with lately.

Anyway, I'd love to team up this time! As this is a short jam, I think it best if we're +/- 4 hours in terms of timezone. My TZ is UTC-4 (US Eastern).

Just let me know and we'll setup a discord or something.

I'm in #17

I have a busy schedule this weekend so I would be an awful mate for a team. Thus I'm participating alone and consider the new extra format this time while aiming for the jam.

My goal is some light and peaceful gameplay without violence. We have enough of the latter in the real world.

Engine: Godot
Editor: Visual Studio Code
Graphics: Krita, Gimp
Audio: Audacity, LMMS
VCS: GIT with GitLab
OS: Arch Linux

Echoes... echoes... echoes...

So, uh, did anybody notice that "echoes" is listed in both rounds 1 and 2? echoes-1.jpg echoes-2.jpg

Let's Goo! 50th Edition

ezgif.com-gif-maker (4).gif This year is ours!! We go all in throwing our fears into the dumpster! Wish yall great jamming for a great 50th edition <3

Theme voting 3 ideas

Ok here goes some ideas. Feel free to grab them, butcher them or do with them as you please. This is more an exercise than the real deal. Not all of the themes have an idea.

Sky Pirates A card game about maneuvering a fleet of pirates so that the cargo can reach it's destination.

Teleportation You have to move things without touching them. It would be a puzzle game. You have a limited number of teleporters of different sizes or a limited use of them.

Space is limited This is inspired by Rick & Morty's personal space show. You have a big room with different shapes and a person who likes small spaces. Use every item available to encapsulate him. More advanced levels could include more people that cannot be together.

Echoes For this one I was thinking you have to guide a blind guy through the bounce of sound waves in different labyrinths.

You are the power source Again, a labyrinth type game where moving equals to disconnect the power source that makes the labyrinth work,

Overgrown Calculate the volume of a gas or a liquid to fill different objects

Crossroads A text game where you have to order chunks of text with different types of arrows without crossing them (lazy idea, I know)

Repair This one could be about badly assembled Rube Goldberg machines and you have to figure out the correct order with limited steps.

Branching out You have to advance through levels sot of autonomously and you have the ability to split the timeline and choose the correct path.

Strength in numbers You play as an ant colony that is dying and you have to find another suitable place. You have a limited number of ants that decreases as time passes.

Decay You use chemical reactions to reduce objects to its chemical elements

Treasure Map You have the elements of a treasure map out of order because they fell out of the paper. You have to put them back together or the captain is going to kill you.

Combine You have a number of paper shapes that you have to combine to create a 3d papercraft shape.

In case Echoes wins

I'm listening to Pink Floyed with Echoes on repeat right now, just in case Echoes wins; I have a fun idea that requires me to know this song in every detail possible :-)

I am in!

My 14th Ludum Dare. Always so exciting.

Most likely going to use Unity or Godot, I haven't decided yet.

Probably going to take it easy again, surprisingly I found out that my games even tend to be better when I don't go too hard :). The last few LDs I like to have basically my whole game finished during the first day and to spend the next day doing some polishing and finishing early.

I'm in, for the first time.

It is kind of nerve-racking to see the timer go down in time, but also exciting. I am probably going to participate in the jam. Does anyone have good advice for first timers? Good luck!
